Welcome to the September issue of the Ackworth Arrow

Wow, what a summer! I hope everyone managed to get some sun in August after the wet July we had!

As September draws closer, we focus on the new academic year ahead. I hope all students who are embarking on a new chapter of their life, got what they needed from their results. I have just watched England Lionesses, lose the world cup. They will be devastated but in time will recognise the huge step made in woman's sport, with more and more girls choosing sport now than ever before.

If you would like to advertise in the Ackworth Arrow or share your group s activity, please contact me on the details below.

The October issue deadline for adverts and content is Wednesday 13th September The Arrow will be delivered by 1st October.

Best wishes

1st ACKWORTH SCOUT GROUP

The Beavers, Cubs and Scouts of 1st Ackworth Scout Group have had another busy, diverse and exciting term. Since moving their meeting place to Ackworth Quaker School numbers have grown. They are fortunate to have facilities in the sports hall, playing fields and woodland.

The BEAVERS had a day at Squirrel Woods campsite and worked for their Outdoor Badge. One evening saw them working towards their Explorer Badge when they visited historic features in Pontefract starting at the Castle (some didn’t even know Pontefract had a castle!) They paid a visit to Ackworth library and were involved in various activities. They’ve also enjoyed a much loved Scout activity fire lighting and cooking.

The CUBS have been equally busy. They enjoyed an evening of Wide Games using cards, flags and balls. They learned the Countryside Code and enjoyed a hike round Pontefract Racecourse. Another occasion saw them visiting Anglers Country Park and hunting for mini beasts. Other outdoor activities saw them raft building and bridge building, typical Scout activities. They learned all about flag etiquette and made Bug hotels. Scoutings founder Baden Powell was a keen tracker in his army days and the Cubs learned how to track and how to make and recognise tracking signs.

The SCOUTS were also busy outdoors. They enjoyed an evening Off road cycling, returning happy and a bit muddy! Another night saw them Geocaching. They built their own obstacle course in the school grounds. As well as outdoor and adventurous activities Scouting teaches useful life skills and the Scouts gained their Stage 3 Emergency Aid badge, learning how to help someone who is unconscious and not breathing, is bleeding, has a burn, suffering from heat exhaustion, has hypothermia or is choking.

The highlight for all sections was a County Camp held at Bramham Park called CHALLENGE 23, over 3,000 members of the movement attended. The emphasis was on fun and adventure. Those at camp could experience Laser Tag and Laser Clay Pigeon Shooting, rifle shooting and archery, crossbows and axe throwing. There was a huge pool where you could try Paddle boarding and canoeing. Some were brave enough to try out the Bucking Bronco. There were lots of popular traditional Scout activities such as Bushcraft skills, Pioneering, Grass sledging, a climbing and abseiling wall, zip wires, an Ultimate assault course, shelter building and Kelly kettle cooking and other activities too numerous to mention. There were many and various types of inflatables to suit all ages, and lots of craft activities. As well as activities there was a Stunt Bikes display team, Birds of prey demonstration and exotic pets you could hold.

A very popular feature was the Fairground with rides such as dodgems, waltzers and a helter skelter, all rides were free.

The evenings featured films, storytelling with puppets, discos and a talent competition. Saturday evening saw the traditional Scout Campfire. Everyone agreed it was a sensational camp especially if you’d not been on a Scout camp before.

What other youth organisation can offer such a variety of activities? If you have youngsters at home persuade them to put down their phones and electronic devices and join the adventure that is Scouting. They’ll learn useful skills that they can take into adult life, make new friends and have lots of fun and adventures.

To join our group which covers Ackworth, Hemsworth, Fitzwilliam , Sth Kirby, Sth Elmsall and Featherstone, and is open to all 6-14 year olds contact Beavers - 01977676906 Cubs - 07868496858

Scouts - 07980400257 All sections meet Tuesdays at Ackworth Quaker School, restarting 12th September.

1st Ackworth Boys’ Brigade looks to the future.

There has been a Boys’ Brigade Company at Ackworth Methodist Church for nearly 50 years. Meeting every Wednesday evening during normal school terms, we have helped literally hundreds of boys grow into young men, enjoying an endless variety of activities in a safe and secure environment. We welcome boys from 5 years into our Anchor Boys section and many stay right through the Juniors, Company, and Senior sections up to 18 years old.

We are constantly looking to recruit new boys, particularly into the Anchor Boys Section, to ensure a constant succession at all levels. We are also seeking to recruit new staff into the Company, to work with the boys at any age group, again to ensure future generations of boys can enjoy the fun, fellowship, and adventures that their predecessors have before them. Staff can join at various levels, a simple parent helper, or through the ranks of Warrant Officer, Lieutenant and even as high as Company Captain. Your skills may seem simple, but there is so much scope that all talents will find a niche in the Company. Above all limitless energy and enthusiasm will go a long, long way.

If you feel your son(s) will enjoy what The Boys’ Brigade has to offer then contact our Company Captain, Colin Godridge, 07960038024. Further, if you want to be involved and join our staff, we will be more than happy to have a chat to discuss options. Hopefully we can ensure The Boys’ Brigade will continue at Ackworth Methodist Church for many more generations, and the boys in the village and surrounding area will be able to benefit from the activities for years to come.
