New brunch locale The Eleanor
Ready to get your day started? There’s a new brunch hot spot in town—The Eleanor, a mid-century-inspired destination. Set in the space of a former dry cleaner, the building has now been transformed with garage doors to the patio, high clerestory windows, light woods, retro colors, and an outdoor Polynesian-themed area with subtropical plants, lava rocks, and a large overhead shade structure. The handcrafted menu features classic breakfast dishes like eggs benedict and fluffy maple butter pancakes, as well as unique dishes like its Breakfast Hash and Churro French Toast. The Making of a Bagel
It’s another big year for Don Guerra. In 2022, he took home a James Beard Award for Outstanding Baker. In 2023, he’s redefining bagels. Guerra partnered with local deli and bakery Chompie’s to introduce a unique line of bagels that are scratch-made with intention, clean ingredients, and lots of love. “It’s a sourdough leavened bagel made from Arizona Sonoran white wheat, with no sugars or oils,” Guerra, who is instrumental in the local grain economy, says. “I like to say I’m putting the health back in my bagels. I’m calling it a Sonoran-style.” The bagels are different from what already exists in the market and focus more on being an Arizona-grown product than replicating a traditional New York-style bagel. They highlight the region of farming and production; the people who are producing, selling, and distributing it; and the way the bagel is built. Three flavors are currently available—Sonoran Plain, Sonoran Sesame, and Sonoran Everything. Pick them up once a week inside of Hayden Flour Mills in Gilbert. Chinese Fare With a Korean Twist
Imagine a dining experience that transports you to the center of a Chinese lantern festival. Chestnut restaurant was so popular with locals that it is expanding with a new location. This newly built, 3,500-square-foot location in the Biltmore area features a farm-to-table and locally sourced menu, with community favorites such as the Benny’s Burrito, Cinnamon French Toast, Corned Beef Hash, Chestnut Chopped, gluten-free Pesto Mac, and Tuna Salad (Melt). There is also a full bar, and of course, its popular pastry case filled with homemade cookies, muffins, scones, and pop tarts. Halloween fun arrives in the Valley of the Sun this month with numerous pumpkin patches, hay mazes, pony rides, and more. At MacDonald’s Ranch (www.macdonaldsranch. com) in Scottsdale, find a hay maze, petting zoo, panning for gold, pony rides, and a pumpkin patch. Meanwhile, Schnepf Farms (www.
pumpkinandchiliparty.com) in Queen Creek not only has a pumpkin patch, but approximately 40 rides and attractions, a petting zoo, a corn maze, live entertainment, and a museum. he local beer scene is an Arizona attraction on the rise. According to the Arizona Craft Brewers Guild, it is now home to more than 95 brewers and 120 licensed breweries, many offering tours, tastings, drafts, beer flights, and growlers. Here, 10 must-try locations.
8-BIT ALEWORKS With offerings ranging from a Mayan chocolate imperial stout and wheat wine that tastes like a Dole Whip to a boysenberry cobbler ale and a rice crispy treat cream ale, 8-Bit is all about infusing imagination right along with hops. The tasting room is as fun as the beer selection, themed after vintage 8-bit video games. In Japanese, kitsune translates to fox, and in Japanese culture, kitsune are seen as a symbol of a good omen. To Kitsune Brewing founder Tyler Smith—who traveled to Japan often while working for Nike in the 2010s—kitsune means all things good vibes, and maybe being smart like a fox, too. After home brewing for years, the University of Arizona graduate launched Kitsune in 2019 to great acclaim before COVID-19 delayed the opening of the formal tasting space. Now open, the full-scale brewery offers approximately a dozen beers on tap that are available for tasting, including a truly unique Kakigori Sour. CALA SCOTTSDALE This Mediterranean-inspired locale features flavors of Greece, Spain, Italy, Morocco, and all places along the Mediterranean coastline, with a menu designed by celebrity chef Beau MacMillan (Food Network’s Iron Chef America, The Next Iron Chef, Guy’s Grocery Games, and Worst Cooks in America, and Game Show Network’s Beat the Chefs) and executive chef Peter McQuid. Named for a tiny beach cove street in Mallorca, this 5,000-square-foot eatery at Senna House sports an airy, beachy vibe, with clean lines, white accents, and light wood throughout,
