Valley of the Sun

Northern Arizona

Southern Arizona

The largest metropolitan area in the Southwestern United States, Greater Phoenix encompasses more than 20 cities and towns, including Scottsdale, Phoenix (which is the capital of the state), Cave Creek, Carefree, Paradise Valley, Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, and Glendale. Its nickname is the Valley of the Sun, bestowed in recognition of the average of 300 days of sunshine the Valley—so called because the area lies in the Salt River Valley—enjoys each year. Metro Phoenix is known for its high-end spas, golf courses, restaurants, and of course, cacti and scenic views.

Northern Arizona includes cities such as Sedona, Flagstaff, Payson, Pinetop, and Williams. The area features the famous red rocks of Sedona, several mountain ranges—including the San Francisco Peaks—and the largest Ponderosa Pine forest in North America. Of course, it’s also the location of the famous Grand Canyon, as well as Monument Valley, Canyon de Chelly, the Painted Desert, Slide Rock State Park, Antelope Canyon, and Meteor Crater. Due to its elevation, Northern Arizona experiences more seasonal weather than the Valley of the Sun, often including heavy snow. Skiing is a popular pastime.

There’s a lot of history to explore in Southern Arizona, from ancient ruins to abandoned mines to locales made famous during the Wild West days. Tucson is the region’s largest city, and is today filled with golf courses, spas, and a thriving food scene. Tombstone and Bisbee are known for their Old West vibes, while Sonoita, Elgin, and Willcox are popular locations for wineries and distilleries. The area is also home to Tubac, Yuma, and Sierra Vista. Southern Arizona, which borders Mexico, tends to have a warm, dry climate.

Tuzigoot National Monument

A typical Sinagua farming family at the site known today as Tuzigoot lived in a 200-square-foot room—one of about 110 at the site—in the years between 1000 and 1400. The hilltop address enabled the supervision of farmland while avoiding the hassle of riverside mosquitoes or Verde Valley flooding. Its ruins were excavated under Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal and designated a national monument in 1939. 25 W. Tuzigoot Road, Clarkdale; www.nps.gov/tuzi

Verde Valley Wine Trail

Frequently referred to as the City of Seven Wonders, Flagstaff is also framed as a hub offering convenient access to eight national parks and monuments within 10 to 80 miles. From the Grand Canyon to Wupatki National Monument, there is much to explore. In this Arizona Craft Beer City, multiple craft breweries serve award-winning brews; and shops, restaurants, and galleries fill the historic downtown.

Northern Arizona boasts its own Napa Valley—the Verde Valley. The area is home to many wineries, and the Verde Valley Wine Trail makes it easy to plan a visit to many of them. Spread across Sedona, Cottonwood, Jerome, Clarkdale, Camp Verde, and Cornville, there are currently 26 wineries and tasting rooms that are part of the trail, from Page Springs Cellars in Sedona to Caduceus Cellars in Jerome to Merkin Vinyards in Cottonwood.

Meteor Crater is what happens when an asteroid traveling at 26,000 miles per hour collides with Earth. Arizona is renowned for its eternal summers with blue skies, pool days, and short-sleeve weather. Contrary to the desert climate is Northern Arizona, where you’ll discover four seasons, each offering unique experiences and unexpected ways to enjoy The Grand Canyon State. WINTER Winters in Northern Arizona bring lots of snow. The mountain town of Greer, located about three hours east of Flagstaff, averages eight feet of the white stuff each winter. Cabins are available for those seeking a snowy retreat, and activities include snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and sledding down the surrounding hills. Sleigh rides are another fun option. Flagstaff itself averages more than 100 inches of snow. The popular snow sport destination Arizona Snowbowl sits on the western slope of Mount Humphreys, with lifts taking visitors up to 11,500 feet above sea level. The 55 runs on 777 acres range from beginner to expert and are perfect for both skiing and snowboarding. Flagstaff also has ample spots for sledding and playing in the snow. A favorite is the Flagstaff Snow Park at Fort Tuthill County Park, or stop by any city park.

SPRING Spring in Northern Arizona brings fields of wildflowers. The season is also when there are typically fewer crowds than in the summer, making it the perfect time to explore the Grand Canyon’s South Rim. Havasupai Falls, on tribal lands in the Grand Canyon, is spectacular in the spring. The water flows freely, and the cooler weather is ideal for hiking to the area. Spring is also a great time to experience the Verde Valley Wine Trail. Spend a day exploring Old Town Cottonwood, the heart of the trail. The destination, known for its Western hospitality, has shops, restaurants, and tasting rooms. There are 26 stops in all on the wine trail, including six tasting rooms in the old mining town of Jerome and eight in Cottonwood. SUMMER Summers in Northern Arizona offer pleasant temperatures, with days in the low 80s and cool evenings. Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff offers nightly telescope viewing and guided constellation tours. Or, about 15 minutes north of Flagstaff, take a mile-long trek into the lava tube cave. Wear a jacket—it typically

ranges between 35 and 45 degrees inside—and bring multiple flashlights. The mountain towns of Pinetop-Lakeside offer excellent hiking and camping all summer. Nearby Sunrise Park Resort, operated by the White Mountain Apache Tribe, opens its chair lifts in summer for hikers and bikers. Rent a bike at the base, take it up the lift, and cruise back down the mountain. Summer in Northern Arizona wouldn’t be complete without swimming at Grasshopper Point in Oak Creek Canyon, surrounded by Sedona’s red rocks. FALL Fall is magnificent, with crisp days and brilliant blue skies. Head to Jerome for some haunted fun. Nicknamed “The Wickedest Town in the West,” the once-bustling mining town operates ghost tours to unveil its spooky history. Wander through the Jerome Grand Hotel. Once an asylum, it now offers rooms with a view. When hunger strikes, there’s the Asylum Restaurant in the hotel, or head down the hill to the popular family-owned Haunted Hamburger. Flagstaff, where Arizona breezes blow cool and smell like pine trees, is designated as Arizona’s Leading Craft Beer City. Even before the state’s governor recognized Flagstaff with that moniker back in 2018, local craft brewers were bringing home awards from Colorado’s Great American Beer Festival and the World Beer Cup in Philly. By then, brewmeisters had collaborated to put a brewery trail on the map. On top of that, locals were already supporting festivals like Made in the Shade Beer Festival, Flagstaff Brews and Blues music fest, and an Oktoberfest that’s ready for oom-pah bands. Fast-forward to today, and Flagstaff’s brewing community is in full bloom. Beer enthusiasts can handily download Flagstaff Brewery Trail maps at www.craftbeerflg.com or grab hard copies at the neighborly Flagstaff Visitor Center. The trail map outlines frothy stops along the way, making it a breeze to plan a route. The walkability of the historic mountain city’s downtown area is not the only plus drawing thirsty visitors to the Flagstaff Brewery Trail— there’s also a notable food scene. In addition to the leisurely strolls between six of the eight craft breweries—the two outliers are less than three miles away—guests can enjoy eats at most of the breweries. Suds seekers collect stamps at each brewpub, and once they accumulate all eight, passports can be redeemed for souvenir pint glasses at the Flagstaff Visitor Center. Beer lovers not ready to hit all the stops at once can take their time to fill out passports over months or years. In fact, brewers recommend that you slow down to enjoy the nuances of each brewhouse. Of course, you must be over 21 to participate. Given that the iconic Route 66 passes through the inaugural International Dark Sky City, a mere 90 minutes from the Grand Canyon, it is no surprise that several breweries in the area have embraced these distinctive attributes. Mother Road Brewing Company is located on a lost section of the original Route 66, hence its name. An enlarged tasting room, families gathered on the patio to enjoy live music, and recent distribution expansion into Nevada attest to the success of favorites like Tower Station IPA and Conserve and Protect Golden Ale. Sample from 23 taps that draft small-batch brews or sip awardwinning spirits from the full bar at Grand Canyon Brewing + Distillery. The scratch kitchen creates tempting burgers, chicken sandwiches, and Bavarian pretzels. Adventurous imbibers can discover experimental brews using exotic

ingredients or traditional recipes on continually rotating tap lists at Dark Sky Brewing Co. The acclaimed Pizzicletta wood-fired pizza restaurant provisions the taproom, while the Basque-influenced Atmosphere Kitchen serves the dog-friendly beer garden. Visit other craft breweries on the Flagstaff Brewery Trail: Beaver Street Brewery, Flagstaff’s first microbrewery; Flagstaff Brewing Company downtown on Route 66; Historic Brewing Company, whose Barrel + Bottle House includes a taproom and cocktail lounge; Lumberyard Brewing Company, which sports a glass wall so diners can observe the brewers; and Wanderlust Brewing Company, where visitors hang with the locals. I enjoyed cooking for people, and I love to teach.

What local spots should visitors make time to experience?

Great new restaurants in Flagstaff. I don’t want to get too specific on restaurants to avoid forgetting someone. My wife, Emily, and I try to visit all the restaurants in Sedona as often as possible. Don’t forget all of our wonderful wine country wineries in Page Springs, Cottonwood, Cornville, and the surrounding areas. The wines are getting better and better every year.
