CULTURAL CENTER LOCATION: CHAVES, PORTUGAL STATUS: SCHEMATIC DESIGN FOCUS: BUILD A CULTURAL NUCLEUS IN A CITY’S VOID.
CHAVES, CHOSEN CITY BY PROJECT III COURSE, TO DEVELOP ANY PROJECT WE WANTED, WICH ALSO WOULD BECOME OUR FINAL DISSERTATION TOPIC. RIVERSIDE CITY, BATHED BY TÂMEGA RIVER, RICH IN HISTORY AND MONUMENTALITY, SUFFERS FROM A COMMON SYNDROME OF MEDIUM-SIZED CITIES WICH AVIDLY EXPAND OUTWARDS FROM HISTORIC CENTRE; THE URBAN VOIDS. WAS CHOSEN A VOID ATTACHED TO THE RIVER, WICH WAS REDESIGNED AND EQUIPED WITH NECESSARY INFRASTRUCTURE, NOT ONLY FOR COMMON DAILY ROUTINE, BUT ALSO FOR THE DEVELOPMENT AND SUPPORT OF THE VOID, WITH THE CREATION OF A NEW CULTURAL NUCLEUS, BY INCLUDING A MARKET (SMALLER SCALE BUILDING) AND A CULTURAL CENTER ( LARGER SCALE BUILDING). BOTH BUILDINGS SHARE TIMBER AS EXTERIOR FINISH AND STRUCTURE TOO, HIGH GROUNDED BY PILOTIS SAFEGUARDING ANY RIVER FLOODING.

FOR THE DESIGN OF THIS CULTURAL CENTER, WE PROPOSED TWO BUILDINGS; ONE MARKET (BUILDING OF SMALLER SCALE), ORGANIZED IN BATTERY THAT SHOULD SATISFY THE REQUIREMENTS OF DAILY USERS AND RESIDENTS NEIGHBORS; AND A CULTURAL CENTER, WITH WORKSHOP ROOMS, SHOWROOMS, DANCE ROOM AND ITS RESORTS AND A MIDDLE SIZE CONCRETE HALL. schematic transverse section

HOUSE EXTENSION LOCATION: VILA CAIZ, AMARANTE, PORTUGAL STATUS: BUILT DESIGN BY: RAÚL SOUSA CARDOSO ROLE: PROJECT COLLABORATOR FOCUS: BUILD A PORCH, EXTENDED FROM PRE-EXISTING HOUSE, WITH MINIMUM OF RESOURCES
THE MAIN PURPOSE OF THIS PROJECT, WAS PHYSICALLY CLOSE AN EXISTING PORCH TO EXTEND THE HOUSE INTERIOR. THEREFORE, WE WERE CONDITIONED TO A SPECIFIC VARIETY OF MATERIALS, THAT THE OWNER HAD, TO MINIMIZE THE COST OF THIS EXTENSION. THE CONCRETE BRICK (20x50x25cm) AND TIMBER RULERS (120x12cm) WERE TWO OF THOSE MATERIALS. THE BRICK’S MEASURES ESTABLISHED THE METRIC AND THE OPENINGS SIZE AS WELL TO CONTROL THE WASTE. WERE THOUGHT WOOD BOXES BUILTED IN BRICK SPACES, TO SERVE THE NEW SPACE VALENCES, AND WORK AS LIGHT POINTS AS WELL. INSIDE, THE BRICK WAS AT SIGHT JUST PAINTED WHITE, AND THE TIMBER RULERS LAYERED ALL THE BACKWALL TO ENSURE THE ELECTRIC INSTALLATION. OUTSIDE THE PORCH WAS COVERED WITH WAVY METAL PLATE, WICH IS A CHEAP AND USUAL IN AGRICULTURAL SHEDS NEARBY.

LIVING ROOM FURNITURE STATUS: BUILT DESIGN BY: RAÚL CARDOSO & PEDRO AZEVEDO FOCUS: DRAW A TELEVISION & SPEAKERS FURNITURE.
THE PURPOSE OF THIS WORK, WAS TO DRAW A FURNITURE, FOR A LIVING ROOM. IT WOULD SUPPORT A TELEVISION, TURNTABLES AND ITS SPEAKERS, BUT SHOULD BACK UP SOME TRIVIAL OBJECTS OF THAT ROOM; AS CUPS AND BOTTLES, AND SMALL ITEMS WICH WOULD BE STORE IN LOCKERS TOO.
THE WOOD HOUSE LOCATION: PORTO, PORTUGAL STATUS: SCHEMATIC DESIGN FOCUS: BUILD A HOUSE FOR A ARCHITECT STUDENT
THE WOOD HOUSE, IT’S THE FIRST APPROACH TO PRIVATE ARCHITECTURE IN ARCHITECTURE COURSE. WE SHOULD DESIGN A HOUSE FOR A ARCHITECTURE STUDENT. THE PHYSICAL SUPPORT OF THE WORK WAS IN CENTER OF OPORTO, 2º BIGGEST CITY IN PORTUGAL. THE TERRAIN WAS ALMOST SQUARE AND LEVELLED, HAD A DENSE ROW OF TREES WICH SHOULDN’T BE ALIENATED. THE TREES MARK THE ENTRY INTO THE HOUSE, A PLATFORM RECEIVES THE USER AND LEADS HIM. THE FACADE FACING THE STREET IS IMMACULATE OF OPENINGS ONCE THE HOUSE LIVES TO ITS WON INTERIOR, AWAY FROM THE ROAD CONSFUSION, ALLOWING A GREATER CONCENTRATION TO STUDENT. ALL INTERIOR ORGANIZATION FEATURES IN BATTERY, RESPECTING A GRADATION, FROM THE COMMON SPACES TO INTIMITATE ONES.

THE BOOKSTORE LOCATION: VILA MEÃ, PORTUGAL STATUS: BEING BUILT DESIGN BY: RAÚL CARDOSO & PEDRO AZEVEDO FOCUS: BUILD A BOOKSTORE, HABERDASHERY, AND STATIONERY, IN A PORTION OF AN EXISTING BUILDING.
THIS PROJECT, INVOLVES REDESIGNING AN EXISTING SPACE, IN FIRST FLOOR OF A TALL BUILDING. THE SPACE HAD NO FUNCTION TILL THAT MOMENT. IT WAS A LARGE, EMPTY AND UNFINISHED ROOM, WITHOUT FLOOR LAYER OR ANY PAINTED WALLS. THE BUDGET WAS VERY SCARCE. ROOM SHOULD HAVE THREE DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS, STATIONERY / BOOKSTORE, HABERDASHERY AND REPROGRAPHIC. IT WAS USED TWO COLORS TO SEPARATE REMAIN (PURCHASE/SALE) SPACES OF COMMUNICATION SPACES. THE BOOKSTORE, IS LOCATED NEAR A SCHOOL, WILL EXIST A CONTINUE FLOW OF PEOPLE IN AND OUT, AND FOR THAT REASON THE TRANSITION SPACES MUST BE CONTROLLED WITHOUT ALLOW CONGESTION. THE SERVICE SPACES, ARE ORGANIZED IN BATTERY FOR A EASY AND DIRECT ACCESS AS YOU CAN SEE IN ORGANIGRAM (NEXT PAGE).
