GRAND CENTRAL PERFORMANCE

OBJECTIVE: TO DESIGN A MULTIFUNCTIONAL BUILDING FOR STUDENTS AND FACULTY, WHERE THEY CAN DO ACTIVITIES SUCH AS SHOPPING, GATHERING, AND DANCING. SITE: UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA BERKELEY CONCEPT: DESIGNING A LIGHT STEEL STRUCTURE AND ATTATCH LIGHT VEGETATIONS TO CREATE A PARK LIKE ENVIRONMENT, WHERE STUDENTS CAN WALK AND ENJOY THE BEAUTYUL VIEW OF BAY AREA.

STRATEGY: CREATING A GRID ON THE LOWER AND UPPER PLAZA OF THE BERKELEY UNIVERSITY, AND CREATING

MODUALS BASED ON THAT, IN A WAY THAT THE GRID CONNECTS THE SPROUL HALL BUILDING AND SATHER GATE AND MARTIN LUTHER KING BUILDING AND CEZER CHAVEZ BUILDING AND MY OWN DESIGNED STUDENT PROGRAM CENTER. MAIN COMPONENTS OF THE PROJEC ARE PROPORTION OF THIS MODUAL. FOR EXAMPLE, THE GATE IS CONSIST OF 5 OF THE MODUALS AND THE DOOR AND SINDOW HEIGHTS ARE ONE MODUAL. THE COLUMNS ARE 2.5 MODUALS FAR AWAY FROM EACH OTHER.

DESCRIPTIONS: ORIGINALLY, SATHER GATE SERVED AS THE MAIN ENTERANCE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF THE BERKELEY UNIVERSITY. HOWEVER, AFTER BUILDING NEW BUILDINGS ON THE SOUTHER EDGE OF THE UNIVERSITY, IT LOST ITS ORIGINAL FUNCTION. DESIGNING A NEW GREEN GATE AS THE ENTRANCE OF THE UNIVERSITY, NOT ONLY CONNECTED THE SATHER GATE WITH THE NEW BUILDINGS, BUT ALSO PROVIDED A NEW CIRCULATION FOR THE NEW BUILDINGS AND MY PROJECT.

INTERIOR VIEW OF THE PERFORMANCE

OBJECTIVE: TO DESIGN A PERFORMANCE IN THE GRAND CENTRAL MARKET LOCATED IN DOWN TOWN LOS

ANGELES.

SITE: GRAND CENTRAL MARKET LOCATED ON 317 SOUTH BROADWAY AVENUE DOWN TOWN LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA

CONCEPT: TO DESIGN A PERFORMANCE AREA BY USING THE CHARACHTERISTICS OF THE EXISTED BUILDING AND A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT CALLED “RECORDER”.

STRATEGY: ANALYSING THE CHARACTERISICS OF THE EXISTED BUILDING AND THE INSTRUMENT AND DESIGNING

THE PROJECT BASE ON THEM IN 3 STEPS.

STEP 1: DESIGNING MAIN ELEMENTS OF THE PERFORMANCE BY USING THE TECHNICS OF DECONSTRUCTING THE MAIN ELEMENTS OF THE RECORDER “HOLES”

STEP 2: DEFINING THE LOCATION OF THE PERFORMANCE BY USING THE SOUND SCAPE OF THE EXISTED BUILDING. STEP 3: ANALYSING THE CHARACTERISTIC OF THE RECORDER AND DESIGNING THE SECTION OF THE PROJECT ABSE ON THAT CHARECTER.

STEP 1: DESIGNING THE ELEMENTS OF THE PROJECT 1: DRAWING THE AXON VIEW OF THE RECORDER

2: TO TAKE A SECTION THAT HAS ONE HOLE

3: TO MAKE THE EXTERIOR SURFACE FLAT

4: TO DIVIDE THE SURFACE INTO EQUAL PARTS

AXON VIEW WITHOUT ROOF

8: TO LOFT THE CURVES TO GET THE SURFACE

5: TO RECONSTRUCT THE

SURFACE BY CHANGING THE LOCATION OF THE DIVIDING POINTS

6: TO SCALE THE HOLE

SITE:

THE PROJECT IS SITED IN THE FOOTPRINT OF THE VIAL NM HOUSE AND THE EXTERIOR EDGES OF THE HOUSE IS THE EXTERIOR BOUNDING BOX OF THE DESIGN.

STRATEGY: TO DESIGN SURFACES FROM A SINGLE CURVE AND THEN GET THE WHOLE PROJECT BY USING THE TECHNICS OF ROTATING, MOVING, SCALING AND MIRRORING HE SURFACES. STEP 1: CREATIING THE CURVES FROM A SINGLE CURVE STEP 2: CREATING THE SURFACES

STEP 1 1: TO DRAW THE CURVE
