Celebrating the Year of the Dragon in 2024
As the lunar calendar ushers in the Year of the Dragon, this legendary creature takes center stage. So, what can you expect in 2024?
The Year of the Dragon is deeply rooted in historical and cultural significance, tracing its origins to ancient Chinese folklore. Unlike the Western perception of dragons as menacing fire-breathing lizards, the Eastern dragon is typically depicted as a benevolent force embodying authority, wisdom, and good fortune. In China, the dragon is associated with the imperial line, signifying divine protection and prosperity.
In Chinese astrology, the Dragon represents strength, luck, and transformation. Individuals born during the Year of the Dragon are believed to inherit the qualities of this majestic creature. Dragons are known for their courage, intelligence, and charisma. Communities worldwide engage in vibrant celebrations to welcome each Year of the Dragon, which occurs only once every dozen years. Festivities include dragon dances, traditional performances, and sharing symbolic foods believed to bring luck and prosperity. Like any Lunar New Year, it's also a time for reflection, renewal, and setting intentions for the year ahead.
In typical Alhambra fashion, businesses around town are participating in this exciting tradition, each in their own way.
We spoke to Ben Long, regional manager for our local Starbucks locations, about their seasonal homage, Dragon Drink. The special beverage is the chain’s Dragon Fruit Refresher with a splash of coconut milk and additional flavors like mango and green coffee extract. “The coconut milk creates a brand-new flavor,” said Ben.
He explained the significance of thedrink’s ingredients, which were carefully chosen to represent the Dragon. “The dragon fruit is red in color on the outside, which is the most auspicious color and represents beauty and fortune.”

You can meet Ben and his team at the 2024 Alhambra Lunar New Year Festival when you pick up your cultural passport at the Starbucks booth.
