PENETRAN KILLS ARTHRITIS PAIN ACTS LIKE LIDOCAINE WITHOUT THE NEEDLE Ingrid Rahavy was suffering from joint pain. In fact, it was keeping her from taking her daily walk, an activity she very much enjoyed. Finally, a friend of hers gave her a tube of PENETRAN PLUS and suggested that she apply it exactly as per the directions he provided.

“I’ve been using Penetran on my knee… I cut it down to once a day and still get great relief. I don’t have to wear my knee brace anymore and I’m able to go up and down stairs.” – Terry Cooper, Acworth

Two months later he saw her and inquired about the results. She said, “I used it exactly as you said and at the end of 30 days the pain was gone.” And so, her friend asked, “What did you do then?” She responded “nothing! The pain was gone and I didn’t need it anymore!”

“Penetran Plus has been very effective in reducing pain in my thumb joint. I previously had surgery for the arthritis but still had considerable pain. I try to use it twice per day and this helps my pain go from 8 down to 1. This is wonderful because it means less pain relievers OTC. Also I have use this for my husband’s back pain and it does help. I highly recommend Penetran Plus.” – Olivia Goodwin, Acworth

Local pharmacist, Dr. Jimi Sharomi, also noted a similar phenomenon from other users. One woman in particular, Direne Waite, used a tube on her aching, arthritic knees and after one use the pain was banished and she hardly had to use it again. Amazed by its efficacy, she allowed her friends to borrow the same tube for similar aches and pains. Remarkably, days after sharing her tube, apparently it had made its way around to several other individuals because she had people coming back to her asking to buy her supply! This greatly surprised Dr. Sharomi but began to puzzle him when he noticed a pattern of individuals who reported such great results from using the product they did not need to purchase it regularly. A few genuine users give their account: “My husband and I have been using Penetran Plus for one week. We cannot understand how the product worked for each of us so quickly. My arthritis is in both pointer fingers; I can really tell the difference when I skip a day...won’t do that again! My husband’s pain is in his right hip and it has really helped him. I have already recommended Penetran to my friends. Thank you.” – Kathleen Sisk, Kennesaw “Penetran Plus has been very helpful in relieving my arthritis + muscle pains. It has a pleasant smell, is easy to use + has given me more relief than anything I have tried in years.” – Marie Long, Kennesaw “After the first use of Penetran the burning feeling in my hands and knees stopped. I use it daily and recommend this to anyone with arthritis pain. Just give it a try! You will be amazed!” – Jayne Bragg, Marietta

“I woke one morning in such considerable pain I thought maybe I should go to the hospital. But then I remembered I had some of this Penetran. Do you know by the time I was done rubbing it in the pain was gone? I never want to run out of this, it has made such a big difference in my life.” – Elizabeth Johnson, Acworth “Penetran has been an excellent product for pain relief from my arthritis. Additionally I use it for rashes & insect bites and found it to be very effective with immediate results. My family likes this product also.” – Evelyn Earles, Austell Does PENETRAN work this miraculously for everyone? No, but statistics are compelling enough for everyone suffering from arthritis to give it a try. No other arthritis pain reliever works on this principle. No other topical analgesic blocks pain like Lidocaine –without the needle and without a prescription. PENETRAN poses a big threat to drug companies whose products cost hundreds more and accomplish much less for arthritis relief. You can only find this amazing pain reliever at a few select stores in Georgia. However it is available right here in Acworth at Red Carpet Pharmacy at a bargain price of just $15.98 for a 2.5 ounce tube. It is so effective we back it with a 90-day money back guarantee. If you don’t get results after complete use of PENETRAN PLUS just return your empty tube for a complete refund – it’s that simple, so you have nothing to lose but your arthritis pain!

Love has Acworth no localboundaries will travel to 11 countries in 2016 Many people talk about dreams to travel the world, but few have the opportunity to do so. Acworth resident, Sarah Hoss, has a plane ticket ready to leave in January following her graduation from Kennesaw State University, this month. Sarah, a 2011 graduate of North Paulding High School, has always had an interest on community service, and now she is pursuing her dream to serve others beyond the borders of home. Sarah rebuilding a New Orleans' home in 2013

Sarah was accepted to participate in a mission trip called “The World Race,” which goes to 11 countries in 11 months hosted by the organization Adventures in Missions. She will travel with a team of 40 young adults ages 21-35 to work with local churches and organizations to meet the needs of each community.

“I always knew I wanted to travel, and this opportunity seemed too good to be true!” she said, “I am able to combine my passion for the Lord and my interest in travel into one life-changing journey.”

Her 11-month trip to the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Costa Rica, Panama, South Africa, Lesotho, Mozambique, Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, and Indonesia begins January 6th, 2016. Some days may involve construction, cooking for the hungry, spending time with children in orphanages, teaching English, loving on trafficked women, or other ministry opportunities. Each day depends on the local community and the vision of the local organization with which her team is partnered. Sarah will live out of a backpack with a week’s worth of clothes, have a budget of approximately $5 per day for food and housing, and learn to live with unfamiliar climates, languages, time zones, and cuisines.

Interested in following her journey? Subscribe to Sarah’s blog “sarahhoss.theworldrace.org” to read about the people she meets, how God is moving in each community, and how He is moving in her life. “I am so excited to start this adventure God has called me to, and I am very thankful for everyone’s generosity to fulfill this mission. I cannot do it alone, and I have been amazed by the support I continue to receive from our community. God bless you all!”

The difference between growing and growing old. Carla Breakwell, Director of Sales & Marketing, Celebration Village Acworth Studies prove that the aging process is mostly up to us. We can actually choose whether aging is a slow, gradual process or whether most of our senior years are active and full of purpose and happiness. Every day brings an opportunity to choose. Simply grow, or grow older. Growing is about learning, improving, trying new things, adopting healthier habits, and embracing certain attitudes, attachments, and emotions towards life. Regardless of age, people who choose to grow are experiencing a life that is meaningful, enjoyable, and exciting. When given the resources and opportunities to grow, we can re-write the process of aging in astonishing ways. Choosing to grow rather than grow older can

From this study, Masterpiece Living was born. Masterpiece Living is a research-based lifestyle program available to senior living communities nationwide and designed to bring participants an exclusive approach to a lifestyle of whole-person wellness. Communities must meet rigorous criteria in six major areas – including Culture, Leadership, Employee and Resident Engagement, Purposeful Programming and Outreach – to receive certification as a Center for Successful Aging. Only a handful of communities have this distinction today. Simply put, this is an environment where successful aging – at any age or circumstance – is possible, giving us all the ability to choose how we age.

amount to years of quality time doing the things we enjoy most and spending time with family and friends. Thanks to a 10-year study funded by the MacArthur Foundation, we can say this is a proven fact. This groundbreaking research proved that 70% of the way you age physically and 50% of how you age mentally is dependent on lifestyle and the choices you make, rather than genetics. It all comes down to ‘living life to the fullest,’ and providing ourselves the perfect environment to do so.

On Wednesday, November 11, the City of Acworth hosted a Veterans Day Ceremony, where citizens joined together to support the brave men and women who have served, and are serving our country. Held at Patriots Point at Cauble Park, the community gathered around to see the service flags of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Coast Guard surrounding the American Flag at the memorial, as well as, the flag representing the Prisoners of War. The concrete dome structure is surrounded by a paver walkway with engraved pavers honoring those who have served. Mayor Tommy Allegood welcomed everyone in attendance and thanked the Veterans for their service. The Academy Singers from North Cobb Christian School sang the “National Anthem,” the “Armed Forces Medley” and “America the Beautiful” and Ron Asby, Commander of the American Legion Post 304, led the Pledge of Allegiance. The Acworth Police Honor Guard did the Presentation of Colors and Mike Linch, Senior Pastor of Northstar Church, led the invocation. Bob Weatherford, former U.S. Marine and currently, Cobb County Commissioner, was the guest speaker for the ceremony. He lead all of the veterans in a renewal of their oath to honor their country. Here are a few memories of the day, along with a photograph of some of the men and women who have served our country. Thank you to everyone who attended. If you would like to honor someone who has served our country by purchasing a paver, please call (770) 917-1234. A Dental Mission! Procrastination & Reality Collide William found his way into my dental office after years of rejecting the notion of seeking dental care. His mindset was attuned to many of life’s demands, but a basic dental check-up never rose to the top of his priority list. As a result, he fell victim to embracing the famous words of John Lennon, “life is what happens while you’re making other plans.” William’s expectations were realistic. He innately knew he was going to lose some teeth and possibly need a bridge. It was a combination of the bad taste in his mouth, bad breath and several loose teeth that guided his instincts. He did not have any pain, so that bolstered his impending denial of anything worse. Actually, lack of pain was the primary culprit for William detouring his path to the dentist, resulting in 20 long years of procrastination. Enlightenment came quickly when William realized the severity of his dental condition. His dental problems were far worse than he imagined and William soon discovered how procrastination and reality collide. His x-rays sadly revealed severe bone loss on all of his upper teeth and only a few millimeters of tooth roots still covered by bone. All his teeth demonstrated mobility and measuring his gums further revealed a poor prognosis for his upper teeth. “I did this to myself and I have no one to blame but myself,” William said. “I wish I would have focused more on my dental health.” There was a resounding pause and then the sobering admission, “Now it’s too late.” William had to have all of his upper teeth extracted. His diagnosis of severe periodontal disease, encompassing all his upper teeth, was overwhelming to say the least.

referred to as gum disease, afflicts 80% of adults. The biological support of your teeth from the bone and gums is violated by bacterial acid. Periodontal disease spreads slowly and painlessly. It is easily detected by the dentist but is a disease that remains undetectable to the individual that possesses it. A delayed diagnosis can provide tragic consequences, as it did for William. William’s dental diagnosis came after an extensive assessment, involving full mouth radiographs to interpret his bone support around each tooth, recorded probing depths of his gums in six places around every tooth, measuring tooth mobility and decay, making stone models of his teeth, taking digital photographs and intraoral photographs, and charting of all his teeth. The conclusion of his diagnosis and subsequent treatment plan options, was based upon a very extensive assessment that left William confident about his findings. The advancements in today’s modern dentistry are wonderful because so many new avenues of care are available for patients. Years ago, William would have been constrained to the single option of an upper denture. Today, William has a vast spectrum of restorative options, ranging from the traditional denture to replacing missing teeth by dental implants. Dental implants are essentially artificial roots placed into the jawbone. Implants can support single crowns or bridges. Implants can support dentures so they don’t put pressure on the gums. William chose the treatment plan of his choice after hearing several options. Our office coordinated a round table discussion, with an oral surgeon present, to allow for questions and answers and to allow William to sort out personal details, including treatment phases, expectations and costs. William was pleased with this avenue of care and it was nice to orchestrate a process that changed Williams focus from the negative aspect of losing his teeth to a constructive process that would restore his mouth to a healthy condition.

Acworth Police Department December is a time for gift giving in our society. As a police department, we spend time gathering gifts of toys for children and families who are in need. We also collect non-perishable food donations and participate in Shop with a Cop to help children purchase gifts for themselves, as well as for their families. All of these things are important, but there are some intangible gifts that are even more important. The most important gifts we can give cannot be purchased. The gifts of time and patience are priceless, and are more important than gifts that come from a store. As police officers, we often see people at their lowest points. Whether they have been the victim of a domestic assault or they are being arrested for committing a crime, when a person is in need of the police, that interaction is the most important thing happening to them at that moment in their lives. Every member of our department understands that. We take our time on every call. We do not rush, because we know how important each call is to the individuals who are involved. Time and patience are the gifts that we can give to our community every day. There are many things that we can do each day to make a difference in the lives of those around us. Some of the smallest actions can have life-changing effects. A simple smile to a stranger can change the trajectory of that individual’s entire day, and the results can be exponential. One simple act of kindness can be passed on from one person to thousands. This year, one of our officers, Corporal Bo Jordan, was honored as Cobb County Chamber of Commerce’s Public Safety Officer of the Year. One of the reasons that he was chosen for this great honor was the fact that he gave an incredible gift to a complete stranger. Corporal Jordan registered with the national bone marrow registry, and when he was identified as a match, he traveled to Florida to undergo a surgical procedure in order to donate his bone marrow. We were blessed to find out that the anonymous recipient of Corporal Jordan’s marrow is now in remission from cancer. In addition to giving the gift of hope, Corporal Jordan also gave a complete stranger the gift of life. In this season of giving, the gifts that we can give are large and small, tangible and intangible. Each sends a message of hope, patience, and kindness. During this month, we are especially mindful of the importance of caring for our families and our community. We all must try to remember this throughout the year, not only during the holiday season. A simple act of kindness, a smile, or even just holding the door for the next person sends a lasting message to those around us. This community has rallied around its police department in many ways this year. Local businesses designed and distributed “I Support Acworth Police” car magnets that are an amazing overt display of support. They send a strong message, and we are so appreciative. This community has also shown its support in smaller, more private ways. Our officers are approached and thanked for their hard work on a daily basis. I can tell you that the feeling from receiving a warm smile and some words of kindness is so special to our officers. So, in this season of giving, on behalf of our entire department, please accept my heartfelt thanks to the entire community. We are all grateful to be able to serve here. Thank you for making us all feel so appreciated. I wish you all a safe and joyful holiday season.

Project ChildSafe Putting A Lock On Safety In Your Home The Acworth Police Department would like to encourage firearms safety by offering free gun locks to our community. We have seen too many tragic incidents take place over a short period of time. If you own a firearm, please be mindful and place them in a safe and/or out of reach of children. If they see it, they will play with it. Let’s take the initiative and keep our children safe!

Quality Care in a Patient-Centered Environment There are a lot of reasons one would seek the services of an oral surgeon- extraction, implants, jaw surgery and facial trauma to name a few. And even when the services are needed, there can be some anxiety associated with such a visit. For some, it’s fear of the unknown and how the treatment plan will play out. For others, there’s a fear of pain while others worry about the cost of a needed procedure. The physicians and staff at Northwest Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery have been in the Atlanta area for more than 30 years, and while they provide top-level oral surgery services, they also understand the concerns many patients have and partner with them to alleviate the fear, anxiety and worry. With seven locations and seven surgeons, patients from Blue Ridge to Dallas are able to access the quality care they need and deserve. Dr. Scott Rose, one of the five partners in the practice explains Northwest Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery’s philosophy toward patient care. “We believe in patient-centered treatment and providing each patient a personalized experience. When a patient first visits, our consultation is thorough and allows the patient to get all questions answered and concerns addressed. Before any surgery, the patient will meet all parties involved from the assistants to the surgeon where everything will be explained and questions answered. We are asking our patients to trust us so we ensure we take the time to build that trust.”

Patient Services Services available at Northwest Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery include: Oral and maxillofacial surgery: Common procedures include dental extractions, wisdom teeth, dental implants, impacted canines, facial trauma and bone grafting. Many procedures are performed in the office as an outpatient. One of the most common reasons patients seek the care of an oral surgeon is for the removal of wisdom teeth, and this is typically the first experience many will have with an oral surgeon. This is an extremely common procedure as the adult mouth is designed to hold 28 teeth, but most have 32 by the time they are adults. If the four other teeth, or third molars as they are referred to, erupt fully and straight, there will be no need to extract. However, this scenario is more the exception than the rule. Some molars only partially erupt, which can leave a gap between the tooth and gum becoming susceptible to bacteria and possible infection. If a tooth cannot erupt at all, it can grow sideways or remain trapped beneath the gum and bone. These teeth can not only cause future health issues, but can wreak havoc on previous orthodontic treatment or straight teeth. Therefore, extraction is necessary. Before and after every surgery, the team partners with the patient to ensure all questions are answered; patient comfort and confidence is of utmost importance, and doctors and staff members routinely check up on every patient after surgery during the recovery period. The back office staff’s main concern is patient comfort. “We all have the same goal: remove all negativity for a completely positive, anxiety-free experience,” Dr. Rose said. Most staff members have been there since 2008, which provides stability and experience that is transferred to the patients. The staff feels like and is treated like family and that camaraderie is evident in patient care. Patients have access to a nurse’s line for questions and a physician can always be reached 24/7. Your Acworth Office One of the convenient locations of the practice is in Acworth on Golf Crest Drive. Three surgeons are based out of this office, including Dr. Rose, who not only works in the community, he lives here. “One of the things we believe sets us apart is that we are not associated with any one dentist,” said Dr. Rose. “When a dentist refers us, the patient can feel confident that it’s an unbiased recommendation.” He also spoke to the time he and every doctor spends with patients. “As mentioned earlier, we take as much time as the patient needs during the initial visit to answer any questions and concerns. We respect our patients’ time and do our best to ‘stay on schedule,’ but will never rush through a consultation. Every question is important, and we want to leave knowing our patient is comfortable with any suggested treatment plan,” he said. Dr. Rose grew up in Roswell and graduated from Roswell High School. His interest in dentistry came honestly- his father was a dentist. However, he didn’t start out pursuing dentistry. “When I was a sophomore in college, I was

unsure of my path so my father suggested I explore dentistry, and he put me in touch with an oral surgeon. I shadowed this surgeon, saw surgeries and the variety in the scope of work he did. And from there I was hooked! To me, it was the best of both worlds- dentistry and surgery.” He attended Tufts University of Dental Medicine and graduated Magna Cum Laude. He received his D.M.D. in 2001. He attended the University of Florida College of Medicine, graduated with honors and received his M.D. in 2004. After residency, he moved back to Georgia and did an associateship in Duluth. He’s known his fellow partners since 2005 and joined them in 2007. Dr. Rose has been married for 13 years and has two daughters, and he loves living in the West Cobb area. “I love the small town community feel of the area, and I love serving the community I also live in.” In fact, you can find the support of Northwest Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery throughout the Acworth community from booster clubs to community outreach programs. Northwest Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery is in network with most major insurance carriers and offers payment plans and third party finance options. If you are in need of an experienced, caring team of oral surgeons, be sure to include Northwest Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery in your search. Find out more at http://www.nworalmax.com.

American Legion Post 304 A Soldier’s Christmas Wish This year, at the holidays of course, I miss home, surrounded by sand dunes, and Iraqi mosque-domes. But I willingly came to guard against fear — not let terrorist conquer everything I hold dear. I know my mom worries about me over here away from family, and good Christmas cheer. And while I do miss the fun and the fare, I know I am fighting for reasons most share — For Freedom, for Justice, for our forefather’s plan, for choices — God-given, to every man. And for all you protester in the streets of your city, looking upon me with hatred and pity, I’m fighting for you to have that skewed right to act like a fool — burn our flag in plain sight, For our children to prosper without boot in their back, and patriots guiding them, to stay on the right track! It’s not just our training, but a true state of mind — to be honest and faithful, and love all mankind. I’d gladly lay down all I can give — my life and my soul so that others may live. And to let every man pray to the God he sees fit, tho, I may not agree, he’s entitled to it. My sons and my daughters may not know it yet, but I fight for their future, and have no regret. So celebrate Christmas in your own merry way, and please send a prayer we’ll come home one day — When this war is over, we’ve finally won, we’ve conquered the terrorists — sent ‘em all on the run. Americas worth it — all this sacrifice, and, Mom, don’t you worry ‘cause I wouldn’t think twice. I’d do it again — even die in the sand for Freedom and Liberty, for we MUST take a stand. “Merry Christmas — Blessed New Year,” to all, I now say, and, “Thank you, dear Jesus— have a Happy Birthday!” Tamara Hillman ©2010 Take the time during the hustle and bustle of the Christmas Season to pause and say a prayer for our military service personnel and their families. It is because of their sacrifice that you and your family can celebrate Christmas joyously. Reach out to the families as they need our support and prayerfully remember the 80,000+ still missing and unaccounted for from past wars. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! God Bless America! Reginald Awtrey was born in 1943 into a family with a history deep rooted in our great city of Acworth. To begin, Reginald’s grandfather, Orlando Awtrey, had a thriving store in the 1890s called General Mercantile. It was a big store in Downtown Acworth that was located across the railroad tracks, on the other side of Main Street (at this time there were two sides). The store was open until sometime around 1935 and Reginald’s father, Earle, spent a lot of time working in the store. Further, Reginald’s Great Uncle, Bernard Awtrey, was the Superintendent of Cobb County Schools and it is for him that Awtrey Middle School is named. Though Reginald never had the chance to know him, it is obvious that Bernard had quite the influence on the school climate within the Acworth community. Even more, Reginald’s grandfather built a house in Acworth in 1885 that Reginald’s father and his nine siblings, were all born and raised in. This house was called the “Awtrey House” and was the house that Reginald first lived in when growing up in Acworth. When Earle “courted” and married Reginald’s mother, Inez Scroggs (a native of the Mars Hill Community) in 1939, they moved into the house to raise their own family. The house is unfortunately no longer standing, but was located where the parking lot for McCall Primary School is situated today. Reginald grew up with his parents and brother, Byrd, during the 1950s and early 60s. He describes being a kid in Acworth during this time as being a simple, yet happy and wonderful. Given the family history of owning stores, it was no surprise when Reginald’s father opened his own store in Acworth, as well – Awtrey Grocery. It was located in the brick storefront right next to current Southside Drive and Reginald remembers many afternoons spent hanging around the store. On his way to the store on Saturdays, Reginald also distinctly remembers how people who lived out in the country would come into town to go shopping, etc. They would stand on the street corners by Allen’s 5 & 10 Cent Store (where Henry’s is located today) and chew tobacco as they traded knives! Reginald would always walk through this crowd on his way to his dad’s store.

Reginald Awtrey Another distinct, and now very comical, memory that Reginald has was the annual “Turkey Run” that the city of Acworth used to hold every year when he was a kid. They would release real, live turkeys from the top of a building on Center Street and people would race to catch them as they came flying down! If you caught one, it was yours to take home for Thanksgiving dinner! Can you imagine this happening these days? This was an unforgettable event that was quite the sight to see! A lot of Reginald’s childhood in Acworth also revolved around riding bikes, playing baseball and football, and just being outside to play with the other kids in town. Reginald has fond memories of spending a lot of time at Acworth beach, too. Whether the kids were actually outside at the beach or inside at the Dance Hall, a great time was sure to be had. There was even one night that Reginald and his buddies, when they were around 16 years old, spontaneously spent the night at the beach! Additionally, Reginald has many dear memories that were centered around time spent at the “flats” (the field by Acworth Elementary) and at Coates and Clarke field, where he played baseball for many years. Aside from playing outside, a popular Saturday activity was to go to the Legion Theatre, located downtown, to see a movie and then go to the Silver Trolley restaurant next door for a hotdog. Reginald’s dad would give him a quarter and he was able to buy his movie ticket and a coke! He could get his hotdog afterwards for just something like 20 cents more – prices were much lower than nowadays! In the late 50s, Reginald and the Acworth kids would go to Sock Hop dances held in the Acworth School gym. The kids would dance to rock and roll music of the time in their socks, on the gym floor! After a Saturday at the movies or at a Sock Hop, Sundays were spent at Acworth Presbyterian Church, the church he attended all during his childhood, located downtown as well. Other places around Acworth that stand out in Reginald’s mind include: John Greene’s Variety Store, the many grocery stores around town, two furniture stores owned by Sam Peppers and JF Collins, and the two drug stores – Acworth Pharmacy and Lacey’s.

Acworth may not have had every store or restaurant, but it had pretty much everything that people needed at this time. For school while he was growing up, Reginald attended Acworth Elementary and remembers the school community in Acworth as being very close knit – you were in school with the same kids from 1st until 8th grade – something that is not always true for kids today. Reginald went on to graduate from North Cobb High School in 1961, where he enjoyed playing on the football team. He then attended Presbyterian College, in South Carolina, where he graduated from in 1965 with a degree in Business Administration. Following college, he was in the Air Force Reserves for about six months and worked several different odd jobs. Reginald went to work for Lockheed until 1973, when he began working with for the State of Georgia Department of Revenue until he retired in 2005.

Now, Reginald and Mary Ann are enjoying retired life. When the grandkids aren’t keeping him busy, Reginald enjoys playing tennis, reading, doing cross word puzzles and working in the yard. Reginald still keeps in touch with some of his childhood friends and occasionally gets together to have breakfast with some of the boys he played football at North Cobb with as well. Though Reginald has not technically lived in Acworth since he got married, a piece of his heart will always belong to the city that he grew up in and that is home to so much of his family history, once again proving – There’s No Place Like Acworth!

Reginald with his grandchildren Wade, Lindsay and Brooke

During his time at Lockheed, Reginald met his wife, Mary Ann – a Marietta girl. They married in 1971, moved into a house in Marietta, and have one daughter, Allison. Allison attended Harrison High School and is now married to her husband, Keith Parkes. Together, they have three children, Reginald’s grandchildren, Wade (11), Lindsay (9), and Brooke (6).

When Carolers Come A-Knocking ‘Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the kitchen, scrumptious foods were prepared for a feast that was. . .delicious. While we would all love to be able to snap our fingers and instantly have food ready when company drops by, that’s just not realistic. If you can figure out how to get a visit from helpful kitchen elves, more power to you. For the rest of us, having some quick-prep items on hand is key. Sour cream or Greek yogurt can be used to make quick dips. Simply combine one tablespoon of your favorite spice blend (Italian, Taco, Ranch, etc.) with one cup of Greek yogurt. Another idea is to melt a can of cranberry sauce in a saucepan together with a tablespoon of Dijon and a dash of Worcestershire. This makes a tasty sauce for cocktail wieners, chicken or meatballs. Cream cheese is a versatile staple that you should always have in your fridge. It has many different sweet Tiffany Hughes and savory uses. For instance, simply top a block with Sweet Thai Chili sauce (or even blackberry jam) and serve with crackers. This is also a great combination to put into little premade pastry cups. A simple cream cheese frosting can be made by beating together a package of cream cheese, four tablespoons of butter, one box of powdered sugar and a teaspoon of vanilla. Use the frosting to dress up store bought cookies, pound cake or even graham crackers. Boxes of pudding and whipped topping have a lot of uses as well. A quick pumpkin dip can be made by mixing together a box of vanilla or white chocolate pudding, one can of pumpkin puree, a teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice and a small container of whipped topping. This dip is great served with cookies, graham crackers, fresh fruit or as a topping for waffles. If two boxes of pudding (any flavor) are combined with a small container of whipped topping, it makes a light frosting that can be put on layer cakes, or used as a topping for fruit salad. Now that you have ideas for snacking, let’s not forget that your guests will need drinks too. Light-colored sodas, such as ginger ale, can be stirred into fruit juices, such as apple cider. The same thing can be done with sparkling adult beverages as well. Hosting unexpected holiday guests doesn’t need to be stressful. If all else fails, just buy extras of the snacks your family already eats. Your guests are there for the company, so serve up those bowls of cheese puffs with pride! Merry Christmas everyone! Tiffany Hughes is an Acworth resident who enjoys spending time with her family and furbabies. She will gladly provide additional recipes if you email her at creativecook11@yahoo.com.

Multifocal C ontact L enses Once we reach our 40s, presbyopia – the normal, age-related loss of flexibility of the lens inside our eyes – makes it difficult for us to focus on near objects. In the past, reading glasses were the only option available to contact lens wearers who wanted to read a menu or do other everyday tasks that require good near vision. But today, a number of multifocal contact lens options are available for you to consider. Multifocal contact lenses offer the best of both worlds: no glasses, along with good near and distance vision. Multifocal contacts are available in both soft and rigid gas permeable (RGP) lens materials and are designed for daily wear or extended (overnight) wear. For the ultimate in health and convenience, one-day, disposable multifocal lenses allow you to discard the lenses at the end of a single day of wear, so there’s no hassle with lens care.

Dr. Dylan Reach

In some cases, RGP multifocal contact lenses provide sharper vision than soft multifocals. But, because of their rigid nature, RGP multifocal contacts require some adaptation. Hybrid multifocal contacts are an exciting, new alternative. These lenses have a RGP center and a soft periphery, making it easier to adapt. Another option is monovision. Monovision uses your dominant eye for distance vision and the non-dominant eye for near vision. Usually, single vision contact lenses are used for monovision. But in some cases, better results can be achieved using a single vision lens on the dominant eye for distance vision and a multifocal lens on the other eye for intermediate and near vision. Other times, your eyecare professional may choose a distance-biased multifocal on your dominant eye and a near-biased multifocal on the other eye. These techniques are referred to as “modified monovision” fits. The only way to accurately determine which type of bifocal or multifocal contact lenses will work best for you is to have a comprehensive eye exam, consultation and contact lens fitting. Dr. Dylan Reach is in practice at Acworth Family Eyecare. For more information, you may contact him at (770) 974-3153 or visit their website at www.AcworthEyes.com.

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year? It’s the most wonderful time of the year – or is it? Do you ever feel that tension? On one hand, Christmas is filled with love and laughter, friends and family. On the other hand, Christmas is filled with malls and mayhem, crowds and craziness. Let’s not even mention that weird relative that makes Uncle Eddie look like Mother Teresa. Tension comes with the territory. It represents what we call a full-net problem. A doctor named Luke writes about this in the Bible: A couple of men had been fishing all night, but their nets were empty. Career fisherman who depended on their catch for their livelihood had been left empty-handed. As a result, Jesus intervenes: 4

When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”

J. R. Lee

When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to rip. 7 So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink. 6

Now the men faced a different problem. Their nets were so full that they began to rip. I think the same is true for you and I regardless of where you are financially or relationally right now. It can be stressful to have a home full of people that you need to prepare for, entertain and feed. It’s not always easy to purchase the gifts you desire to give in the midst of uncertain economic times. Travel schedules are crazy. Traffic is crazy. Kids are crazy. Christmas is crazy, but at least our nets are full. Full net problems are the kind of problems people with empty nets would love to have. That changes my perspective. Cooking far too much food for far too many people = full net problems. Buying gifts because you have so many loved ones you care about = full net problems. Having a full net can be stressful, but it sure does beat staring at an empty one. Regardless of what kind of net you find yourself with during this season, I want to personally invite you to our new teaching series at Freedom Church entitled: The Most Wonderful Time of the Year? You can join us every Sunday this month AND my wife Devin and I would love to invite you to be our guest for one of our 8 Christmas Eve Experiences. You can get all the details at http://FreedomChurch.tv. J.R. Lee is the Lead Pastor of Freedom Church, with locations in Acworth and Kennesaw. You can get all the information you need by calling the church at (770) 529-6006 or visit www.FreedomChurch.tv. Also, check out his blog at www.JRLee.tv.
