Aronia Berries and Chokecherries

The range of the purple chokeberry is roughly that of the black chokeberry; it is found in areas (such as Michigan and Missouri ) where the red chokeberry is not. Aronia berries and

chokecherries both contain polyphenolic compounds, such as anthocyanins , yet the two plants are distantly related within the family Rosaceae. However, we show that only low doses of AB demonstrate this protective effect, while high doses potentiate the negative effects elicited by PQ. Overall, this work suggests a proper balance of

prooxidants and antioxidants are required for normal neuronal homeostasis, and moderate levels of AB shift the balance in favor of neuronal survival following PQ exposure. Our findings support that moderate levels of aronia berry concentrate may prevent reactive oxygen species-mediated

neurotoxicity. In summary, aronia berry concentrate at low doses restores the homeostatic redox environment of neurons treated with paraquat, while high doses exacerbate the imbalance leading to further cell death.

Interestingly, high doses of aronia berry concentrate increased neuronal superoxide levels independent of paraquat, while at the same time decreasing hydrogen peroxide. We sought to test the effectiveness of a commercially available polyphenol-rich Aronia melanocarpa concentrate in

the amelioration of paraquat-induced neurotoxicity. Aronia are not particular about soil, and will tolerate partial shade, although they will fruit best in full sun.
