Coalition threatens to unseat Tory government Council proposes 2.7 By JOHN CARTER Ottawa Region Media Group A subversion of democracy or a necessary move to save the country from falling into a recession? Stephen Harper’s minority Conservative government is teetering on the brink of defeat to a LiberalNDP coalition with Bloc Quebecois support. The Opposition parties have pledged to vote against the government’s economic update in a confidence vote Monday, Dec. 8, then ask the Governor-General to let them form a coalition federal government

instead of calling another election. Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant said Monday that such a prospect runs contrary to the wishes of the electorate in the Oct. 14 election. “Any government should earn the right to govern, not take power by stealth,” she declared. “I’m very concerned for our democracy,” said Gallant. She said Canadians have made it clear they want their MPs to work on tackling the economic downturn, not getting involved in “power grabs.” However, Tom Adamchick, presi-

dent of the Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke Liberal federal riding association, said it is the duty of opposition MPs, in face of Conservative lack of leadership on the faltering economy, to take the initiative. “The majority of MPs have lost confidence in the Harper government,” he said. “With the economic problems this serious, they have no choice but to take action.” NDP federal riding association president Sue McSheffrey put the blame for the crisis on Prime Minister Steven Harper. per cent tax increase By ERIN FITZGERALD Arnprior Weekender Arnprior residents will see a 2.7 per cent tax increase in 2009, according to the first draft of the annual budget. “This is not a time for slash and burn or spend till you’re broke,” said Arnprior Mayor Terry Gibeau. “This council has not

exceeded a three per cent increase in five years …we are trying to take a constant type of approach for budgeting.” Town council spent several days this week deliberating over the 2009 Operating Budget, having passed the Capital Budget “in principle” on Nov. 25. See OPERATING Page 2

Farm, barn totally destroyed On Nov. 26, Ellard Bandy’s two-storey farm house and barn on Scheel Drive caught fire. Both buildings are “totally destroyed,” said NcNab-Braeside Fire Chief Rob Dodge. The home dates back to 1923. Firefighters were already on their way to the blaze before receiving a page around 7 p.m. “We had guys moving before the call because some saw the glow in the sky,” Dodge said. He estimates the damage to both buildings is $350,000. No one was in the home when the fire started. Firefighters believe the blaze started on the south side of the home and did not take long to spread. Dodge said it will be difficult to determine what caused the fire due to the extensive damage. Twenty-five firefighters from three stations responded to the call, eight trucks were required and the McNabBraeside Fire Department requested tankers from Arnprior and Horton. Dodge said fire personnel were on scene for three days before the case was handed over to insurance adjusters. “Because we were unsure of the origin we couldn’t leave the scene,” he said. Dodge believes the homeowners were in town at the time of the blaze.

Continued from front page “The service levels for the 2009 operating budget assumes the same services and the same level of service as in 2008,” said CAO Larry Donaldson. Town committee directors presented their staff budget reports before council on Tuesday and Wednesday. Many department expenditure budgets remain unchanged from 2008. Residents will see some modifications to recreation prices, including a five per cent increase in all rentals and programs excluding the pool with a proposed increase of 10 per cent along with minor ball rentals. The recreation department took a hit this year with ball diamond income because one league moved away from Arnprior. On the other hand, the Telus Cup, hosted by Arnprior in April was considered a resounding success and payments totaling $13,000 from tournament sponsors have recently been received. There are no major changes to the number of full-time or part-time positions according to the budget. Parks and recreation is calling for the part-time position of youth programmer to be made into a full-time position. Arthur said this is an important step as Arnprior has been recognized by the province as having one of the most active youth programs in Ontario. Since

the inception of the youth programmer as a contract position in 2008, there has been an increase of youth participating by more than 1,000. The library budget proposes increased hours for some staff members to keep the library open for longer hours in the summer. This increase would account for an additional $820. The library is recommending a $5,000 increase to their 2008 book budget, bringing the total to $48,000 to reflect the size and circulation of the library. It would also bring the Arnprior library to the same standard of neighbouring community libraries. “The library is used by more than 300 people on a daily basis,” said Karen DeLuca, children’s librarian. “Our annual circulation is the highest per capita circulation for a community our size in Ontario.” DeLuca estimates 3,800 Arnprior residents are library patrons. Following presentations Mayor Terry Gibeau thanked each committee director for their hard work over the year. The town’s total debt for 2008 stands at over $9.5 Million, down from 2007’s debt of over $10.2 Million. The waterworks and wastewater departments account for 67 per cent of the town’s outstanding debt. The town has budgeted more than $200,000 in the 2009 budget for debt repayment.

Arnprior residents are invited to gather at the Arnprior Library on Dec. 6 at 8 p.m., for a dramatic reading of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. The event is sponsored by CBC radio and the Friends of the Arnprior Library. Readers gathered Nov. 30 for a run through of the script. Coun. Nancy Black, in back, will host the night and readers include, from left, CBC’s Hallie Cotnam, Jackie Stadnyk, Peter Morgan, Karen Deluca and Arnprior Mayor Terry Gibeau. Tickets are $7.

Demand for snowsuits increases By ERIN FITZGERALD Arnprior Weekender Operation Snowsuit currently has a list of 247 people requesting winter clothing. This list has jumped by more than 100 people in the last two years. “This is the highest demand we have ever had and as it gets colder there will be more demands,” said Lyn Smith, co-ordinator for Renfrew County Child Poverty Action Network. “I have children on this list who aren’t even born yet and up to 18years-old, we cover all of childhood.” Operation Snowsuit provides winter clothing to those in need. The program is run without any outside funding, relying only on clothing and monetary donations from the community. “We put our trust that what we need will come, Renfrew County is a wonderful community and when you ask you usually get,” Smith said. “We also put our trust that only those who need the program will use it.” So far, the charity has partially filled 211 orders, some are waiting on proper pant and boot sizes to arrive. Last year, Operation Snowsuit received 207 requests. Smith attri-

butes the jump in requests to the stoppage of the winter clothing allowance. The provincial government introduced the Ontario Child Benefit in July, folding the $111 winter clothing and the $134 back-to-school allowance into monthly payments, instead of one-time deposits. “Parents haven’t had a year of the allowance yet, but winter is already here,” Smith said. She estimates a new children’s snowsuit costs $125. “Plus people are being hit hard this year, struggling with job losses and high gas prices.” Felicite Stairs, a former staff lawyer with the Renfrew County Legal Clinic said although parents are still receiving the money, $9 a month for a snowsuit won’t cut it. “The problem is parents were counting on these allowances and they didn’t have the chance to save money up,” she said. “The amount people are given on social assistance means they can’t save anything anyways…it immediately has to go to essentials.” In November social assistance went up two per cent. Stairs said this hike still won’t allow those on social assistance to keep up with increased living costs. Now a volunteer with CPAN, Stairs said the reaction of their cli-

entele to the allowance replacement is “what are we going to do now, they are scrambling.” CPAN’s goal is to help every child feel socially included. “We want children to become all they can be, not having any barriers against them or being any different,” Smith said. “And we want to give them the supplies to be their best.” Ross McEwen, principal at Walter Zadow Public School, sees firsthand the effects of students who arrive for class ill-dressed for cold weather. For the first time this year Walter Zadow had a collection for Operation Snowsuit. McEwen said the school brought in a couple snowsuits, but hopes to see a greater response in subsequent years. “It’s a good thing to do and I’m making up for previous years when we didn’t participate,” he said. “It has to be tough with the way the economy is, so if we were going to do it any year I think this was a good one.” Smith said CPAN’s work is important to many people in the community. “I have people who call back crying because they are so grateful for what we do,” Smith said. “There is just still so much need.”

Renfrew County rural high-speed efforts buoyed Township of Greater Madawaska receives $230,000 to expand broadband By JOHN CARTER Ottawa Region Media Group The campaign to bring high-speed Internet service to the rural areas of Renfrew County has received a major boost. It was announced Friday that two Renfrew County municipalities Greater Madawaska and Laurentian Hills - are among 15 municipalities to receive major provincial broadband grants. The approval of up to $230,413 for expansion of high-speed service in Greater Madawaska bodes well for a follow-up application to be made in February by its partners Admaston-Bromley, Horton and McNab-Braeside. “This project is the first big step toward improving telecommunications throughout the township,” said Greater Madawaska

Reeve Peter Emon. “This is a great opportunity for us to provide an important tool to our many residents, small and home based businesses. High-speed allows our businesses one more asset as they market themselves and the Calabogie area.” The Rural Connections Broadband Program, designed to bring broadband access to rural and remote areas in Ontario, funds one-third of the approved costs of eligible projects. The grant for Greater Madawaska will go toward the $700,000 phase one of the township’s highspeed project, with its private sector partner, Bell Aliant, investing $390,000. The balance will be composed of cash and in-kind

contributions, which the township’s broadband task force has assembled from a variety of public and private sources. Emon said action will begin immediately to finalize detailed plans for the project, which will bring high-speed Internet service to about one quarter of the municipality. It is expected installation of the necessary technology will take place next summer and be substantially completed within 2009, he said. Through a competitive request for proposals (RFP) process, Bell Aliant was selected as the township’s partner in the initiative. Bell’s DSL service will be utilized to provide reliable high-speed Internet service over existing telephone wires. The project will focus on the most heavily populated portion of the township, including the developed areas surrounding Calabogie and Norway Lake and extending several kilometers east and south from Calabogie along both County Roads 508 and 511. Also included is the eastern half of Black Donald

Lake through to the northern tip of Norcan Lake. Emon said the township’s broadband task force has developed a multi-staged, multi-year plan. It should have the first phase completed and be ready to turn our attention to the next phase in the outer reaches of the township within 18 months, he said. One of the project’s unique elements is a public outreach and awareness program planned for fall 2009. It is designed to offer local residents and businesses information and training on how to get maximum benefit from high-speed Internet service. The township’s application, strongly backed by letters of support from its neighbours, was submitted in September. The township’s volunteer economic development committee chaired by Bruce Parker quickly seized on the funding source as an important initiative to pursue, said Emon. “Mr. Parker devoted many hours to the research and development of the application and

if he hadn’t been such a strong advocate the proposal may not have gone forward,” he said. Former township CAO John Baird and Dave Lemkay of the BRAVO task force contributed to the application process and township office staff spent many hours assisting Parker with the final application, added Emon. The process consisted of a request for proposal and interviews with the prospective vendors as well as more than 200 hours of research and an additional 100 hours of application writing time. Emon pointed out that Addington Highlands, North Frontenac, Admaston-Bromley, Horton, McNab-Braeside, Lanark Highlands, the counties of Renfrew and Lanark, and the Calabogie and Area Business Association were strong supporters of the application. RenfrewNipissing-Pembroke MPP John Yakabuski and his staff were also a valuable asset during this process, he added. “The province deserves a great deal of praise for moving to assist rural

municipalities to address their high-speed Internet infrastructure deficits,” said Emon. “The schools, our businesses and our residents were very supportive of this and are excited by the announcement. Our tourism and active-living based economy needed this shot in the arm in order to continue to evolve and to encourage more people to live and play here.” “This announcement will give our businesses, students and teachers, health care professionals and citizens the hi-tech tools they need to succeed and do business,” said Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Leona Dombrowsky. “I am delighted that Greater Madawaska Township brought forward a successful proposal, which shows their commitment to community broadband expansion and to providing their citizens with the best technology possible.” Among those also receiving Rural Connections grants were the Town of Bancroft and County of Frontenac.

Arnprior Chronicle-Guide Just in case you missed it... Just in case you missed Tuesday’s copy of the Arnprior Chronicle-Guide, here are briefs of some of the stories we are following: * Arnprior District High School was the scene of a mock disaster last week so local emergency services could come together and practice their response methods. We had coverage of the exercise in the Dec. 2 edition of the Arnprior Chronicle-Guide. * The new trial of Allen Tehrankari, accused in the 2004 murder of White Lake native Barbara Galway, has begun again following a mistrial last year. In the Dec. 2 Chronicle-Guide, we had coverage of the trial start-up. * Duane and Cindy McSorley, parents of the late 15-year-old Kyle McSorley, have donated two defibrillators to Arnprior and District High School. We had the story in the Dec. 2 ChronicleGuide.

Don’t miss this... Here are some of the items we will be looking at for this Tuesday’s Chronicle-Guide: * It’s time for the Arnprior Legion Santa Claus Parade of Lights this Saturday. Pick up Tuesday’s paper for a look at photos from the popular annual event. * McNab-Braeside Township passed its muchtalked about official plan this week. Pick up Tuesday’s paper for the story. * Festive events continue this weekend with a number of activities on the schedule. See Tuesday’s paper for coverage.

For complete coverage of these and other news stories about Arnprior and area, you can pick up a copy of the Arnprior Chronicle-Guide on sale each Tuesday at local stores or at our office, 116 John St. N., located in downtown Arnprior.

The little things with the biggest impact in economy Tips to stretch your dollars Someone is going to have to explain to me the difference between a recession and a depression. I would guess a depression goes deeper than a recession, but to me, they both register pretty high on the Richter Scale when it comes to worrying about survival. Both tend to scare the pants off anyone who, at the best of times, barely manages to keep their head above water. And the experts say if we are not already in a recession, we are pretty darn close. For those who could be facing a job loss because of plant and business closures, this is a scary time. But for years, many of us have been living well beyond our means. Some people have been building or buying large homes and carrying mortgages beyond their ability to meet the payments. We have demanded the best of everything for our kids, we want the latest in everything high tech has to offer and the credit card has become our bible. About 30 years ago, I wrote a book. Actually it was a story book and a recipe book. It contained hints on home economy. (As an aside, that book

As I See It

Mary Cook was chosen by a food editor with the Globe and Mail as one of the best books of the season.) The money-saving hints in the book were ideas I had used for years and the few I have given up are being put back into operation. I’m sure many of you are already following some of these hints, others of you will be able to add a few money saving ideas of your own. THE HOMEMADE SOUP POT Long ago, when the “real” depression was all around us, my mother invented the homemade soup pot. Every scrap of leftover food went into the ice box, and once a week, it became soup. I have never given up on that one. This week, it was a halfcan of leftover crushed tomatoes, chicken broth from stewed chicken, leftover peas, a handful of flat noodles, a heel of an onion, and herbs and spices.

It was delicious. Still on the issue of food, when I was feeding seven, I developed what was called EPD dinners. Anything left over from a full meal was arranged on a foil plate, tightly wrapped and put in the freezer as a whole dinner. When I had accumulated seven, they were taken out, and everyone got an EPD dinner (every plate different). They didn’t know what they were getting until it was unwrapped. Someone may have a pork chop dinner, someone else macaroni and cheese and so on. If they wanted to trade or barter with someone else at the table, they could and often did. I have harped enough on the use of the oldfashioned clothesline to sound like a broken record, but for goodness sake, let’s put pride of back yards aside and get a clothesline! I don’t have to tell you that your dryer and your electric kettle are two of the heaviest users of electricity. You know that. I have an old-fashioned wooden clothes rack. It not only dries my clothes, it gives me much needed moisture in the house when the winter dryness hits. If you don’t have a crock-pot, buy one. You’ll save many dollars and time. It uses very little elec-

tricity, much less than your oven. Turn your thermostat down, and put on a sweater, or even long johns if you have to. If you use a dishwasher (I’ve always said I’d rather part with my stove and fridge than my dishwasher), just use the wash cycle, open the door and let your dishes airdry. You’ll save plenty. Use on-sale wallpaper for gift wrap. If you have heavy drapes, close them at night to keep out the drafts. Don’t fill your tea-kettle to the brim when you need boiled water. Just boil what you need. This hint has a double purpose. First of all, it saves money, and secondly, it is also environmentally friendly. Ask for paper bags at the grocery store if you have forgotten your green bags and boxes. Put a cardboard egg carton (opened up flat and forced down into the opened bag) and use for garbage. I checked with Waste Management in Brampton, and they agreed these bags will decompose, whereas plastic bags won’t. Limited space for this column prevents my giving you more hints. I would very much like to hear yours. If we all share, cut back, and reuse, we can weather this financial storm.

The genealogist’s dream A few days ago I received a phone call from Victoria, BC. I was delighted when it turned out to be my 10year-old grandson, Stephen and his next words almost had me hyperventilating. He was wondering if I would be willing to help him with a school project of family history. You can have no idea the self-discipline it took for me to remain calm and interested when all I wanted to do was grab my laptop and get the next flight to the west coast. And so began a halcyon week of phone calls and e-mails with information flying across the country. I was very careful to ensure he maintained leadership in and ownership of the project and it paid big dividends for me in a delightfully enriched relationship with a truly amazing young man. What a wonderful gift of happiness he gave me. ARGENTEUIL COUNTY I recently had occasion to revisit the genealogical web presence of Argenteuil county. Their GenWeb page is part of the one for the administrative region of the Laurentides and you can find it at www. rootsweb.ancestry.com/ ~qclauren/ . I particularly like the way the site is organized. The pages are all grouped within five main sections and there is an incredible amount of great material included there. The Regional section deals with the history and

The Family Historian

PATRICK WOHLER geography and the towns of the region and has some excellent maps. The Institution section included parishes of all faiths, cemeteries, libraries, schools and societies with up to date contact information. It is a wonderful directory of resource locations in the region. The Documentation section has indexes to vital records, censuses, notaries records, directories, old maps, regional newspapers and old photographs. For those of you researching family in the area, there is a Sharing section with bulletin boards and available lookups. The ubiquitous Links section focuses on organizations and individuals of the region and includes a number of local genealogies. This is a great site to visit even if you are not looking for relatives in the region. GOOGLE GOES FOR THE NEWS I recently heard a news report on CBC that Google

Please find me a home

had bought out the Paper of Record website. I checked for other references to this and could find none even in blogs where I would have expected it to appear. The only source left was Google itself so I burrowed into their site until I found a schedule of their projects. Those of us who are interested in old newspapers will be happy to learn the Google has leapt with both feet into the newspaper digitizing arena. They are working with editors and other compilers of digitized newspapers to vastly increase the availability of this kind of resource. You’ll be able to explore this historical treasure trove by searching the Google News Archive or by using the timeline feature after searching Google News. While the project is still young it is expected to grow quickly and the results will actually show up in your normal Google searches. The number of new programs coming out of Google is truly phenomenal. By the way, for language purists, google has been added as a verb to the Oxford English Dictionary in June 2006. The term itself derives from the mathematical term googol with means 1 followed by one hundred zeroes.

By PETER DeWOLF Ottawa Region Media Group Each week in conjunction with the Arnprior and District Humane Society we feature pets ready for adoption. This week we feature Molly and Willy. These two are a happily married couple and need to be adopted together. Willy listens very well and is obedient; Molly has trained him well! Molly, on the other hand is happy-go-lucky, never listens, but will follow Willy. They both love squeaky toys and treats, and taking them for a walk together keeps harmony in the family. They love attention and are affectionate and intelligent, even good with cats. However, no other dogs or small children please. Just ask about the Odd Couple #3249 and #3250. To the editor: The Arnprior and District Humane Society would like to express our deepest thanks and appreciation to all the kind and generous people who helped save ‘our Tyson’ from his chronic kidney disorder with such an awesome number and amount of monetary gifts. The response from everyone was wonderful. Tyson has had a week at the veterinarian’s and has had his kidneys flushed and several other tests done. His levels did go down some, but he will continue to require blood tests. He will have to remain on medication and subcutaneous fluids every other day for the rest of his (hopefully long) life. Tyson continues to hold his own and says a heartfelt thanks to all the caring people who helped.

male of few words. He prefers a quiet life - he is affectionate but cautious. A place by the window is his favorite spot, and if you brush and pet him, then he is content. No other animals please, he is declawed and Billie is an indoor fellow only. Just ask about Mr. Mellow #3215. The shelter is in need of non-clumping cat litter, laundry soap, fabric softener sheets and meaty cat food. The humane society pet pics with Santa will be held at the Arnprior Shopping Centre Dec. 13 and 14, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Raffle tickets for a homemade quilt are still available at the shelter and at Peebles. The shelter is open Monday to Saturday from noon to 5 p.m., at 490 Didak Street. The shelter number is 613-623-0916. The shelter website is www.arnpriorhumanesociety.ca.

Continued from front He hasn’t lived up to his promise to work with the opposition parties to help Canada weather the economic storm, she said. “These are historic times,” she said as she watched on television as Liberal Leader Stephane Dion and NDP leader Jack Layton signed an agreement to form a coalition government should the minority Conservatives be defeated in a confidence vote. “As Jack Layton says, this is a time to look at a different type of government … a government that works together,” McSheffrey said. “And that’s what the three opposition parties want to do … work together to get Canada out of recession.” Gallant maintained the opposition parties are using the economy as an excuse to justify their plot to “usurp power.” The actions of the three main Opposition parties in the last week show they have been scheming for some time, she said. “They have been waiting for an opportunity to strike …. If it wasn’t the economy they would have found something else.” The motives of the NDP and Bloc are clear “as they never otherwise would have a chance to gain power,” she added. “It’s greed for power … and money (government political subsidies).” Gallant said the Bloc probably wouldn’t exist except for the political

party subsidies the Conservatives announced they were going to cut back. In response to the coalition government threat, the Conservatives have retreated from the cutbacks and its intention to restrict public service workers’ wage increases and right to strike. “It’s because Canadians have told us they don’t want another election now,” Gallant explained. “We’ve made concessions on the things they have a problem with … but they are still going ahead with their coalition, so it’s obvious there is another agenda in place here,” she said. McSheffrey said the only agenda for the opposition parties is to strengthen the economy. The majority of MPs in the Commons have decided that the proposals in the Conservatives’ economic update are not good enough, she said. “Now Harper’s backed into a corner and is not sure how he’ll get out.” She said that the Bloc Quebecois, while not officially part of the coalition, has agreed to support the Liberals and NDP on crucial economic and environmental issues. On other issues, such as Canada’s role in Afghanistan, there would be more free votes, she said. “It will open up Parliament.” Gallant criticized the NDP and Liberals for teaming up with the Bloc, noting Liberal leader Stephane Dion originally came to Ottawa as a unity

minister to fight separatists. “Now he’s making deals with the party whose goal is to break up the country,” she said. Adamchick said the Conservatives should be careful making accusations of that sort as Harper tried to link up with the Bloc Quebecois in 2004 in an effort to unseat Paul Martin. He said the Conservatives showed their disdain for democracy by breaking their own fixed election date rule and spending $300 million on an election no one wanted. They say they are entitled to govern, but only received support from 23 per cent of eligible Canadian voters, he added. He said after some early debate, the Liberal caucus is solidly in support of the coalition plan. Dion has agreed to turn the government over to the new Liberal leader on May 2, he said. If Parliament isn’t prorogued this week until January, as rumoured, Gallant isn’t optimistic the government can survive past next Monday’s confidence vote. If Monday’s question period is any indication, all the opposition MPs are in full support of a coalition government, she said. It’s unfortunate more Canadians didn’t vote Oct. 14 and give the Conservatives a majority, she said. “Canadians didn’t vote for a coalition government … I hope cooler heads prevail.”

The battle over who should govern Canada in difficult economic times features two distinct philosophies. Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant said Monday that the Conservative government’s balanced,

Conservative plan for the economy lacks stimulants, say opposition parties Continued from Page 9 The best way to weather the difficult times is for the government to stimulate employment and help small business and industry stay afloat, said the NDP’s Sue McSheffrey. Liberal Tom Adamchick said that while most other industrialized countries are planning major spending initiatives to stimulate the economy, the Conservatives have stalled. “They are doing nothing … they have no plan,” he said. “Harper’s going with cutbacks … it’s the worst time to embark on his ideological agenda.” Gallant disagreed, saying all other industrial countries are looking to Canada for guidance because it has been cushioned from the downturn. And if Canada continues down the path set by the Tories, it will come out of

the downturn quickly, she added. Gallant maintained the economic update does contain stimulants for the economy. But it’s making strategic investments that will have long-term benefits, not taking a “shotgun approach” by spending millions willy-nilly as the opposition wants to do, she said. Reaction to Conservative plans to double infrastructure spending next year has been positive, she said. And seniors are relieved the government is giving them a break on their Registered Retirement Income Funds, she added. But that break will be lost if the government is defeated before it can be implemented in the January budget, she noted. Gallant said the government stimulated the economy last year by putting

two per cent of the Gross National Product into tax cuts to increase consumer spending. The U.S. has thrown billions at the banks and yet they are still failing, Gallant said. “We’ve worked hard at paying down the debt. We need to act responsibly and not undo all that’s been achieved.” She said that if the downturn turns out to be worse than expected, then the government will respond by adding more stimulants to the economy. McSheffrey said more should be done to stimulate the economy now. The coalition talk is not about party subsidies or power grabs, but “about how to get out of this recession so people can keep their lives intact and keep their jobs,” she said. “It’s about helping the less fortunate and not just the rich.” McSheffrey said that

with a Conservative government in power and a Conservative MP, the area has lost 2,500 jobs. “We only get platitudes about the lost forestry jobs … a lot of local families know what it’s like to be in the middle of a recession because they’re living it,” she said. Adamchick said the Conservatives continually downplay the economic situation. When, during the English leaders debate, Liberal leader Stephane Dion proposed a plan to respond to the downturn, Harper accused him of panicking and said it was a great time to buy stocks, he said. Adamchick said the Conservatives’ throne speech and economic update has nothing to reassure forestry, auto and other workers that the government is going to address their plight. “How

In addition to the Arnprior Santa Claus Parade, those in Cornwall and Renfrew also received support from OPG. “This partnership is exactly the kind of corporate involvement that makes the Santa Claus Parade a success each year,” said Santa Claus Parade committee chair, Randy Whiteman. “We very much appreciate Ontario Power Generation’s contribution to our organization. We encourage others to ‘get on board’ and follow Ontario Power Generation’s example of local community collaboration.” The parade will be held this Saturday, Dec. 6, at 6 p.m.

The $1.95 election In the Economic and Fiscal Statement delivered on Nov. 27, our government announced it was eliminating the $1.95-pervote taxpayer subsidy for political parties, effective April 1, 2009. Canada is facing a period of global economic uncertainty. It may be necessary to ask Canadians to tighten their belts to weather the storm. At the same time, Canadians have a right to look to government as an example. We have a responsibility to show restraint and respect for your money. We cannot ask Canadians to tighten their belts during tougher times without looking in the mirror. Canadians pay taxes so governments can provide essential services. They trust the people they elect to serve society with that money, not serve themselves. Tax dollars have been supporting political parties for a long time. There are reimbursements on election spending and Canadians also receive a tax credit on their donations to political parties. It ought to be sufficient for all of us. However, since 2003, there has been more, in the form of a $1.95 subsidy for every vote we receive in an election. For 2009, that subsidy will pay out $28,000,000.00 to the parties. Ordinary taxpayers like you have told us they believe there is a generous allotment of tax dollars to political parties without the subsidy. We agree. Those who support the Conservative government in eliminating this sub-

sidy point out that Canadians pay their own bills, and for some Canadians that is getting harder to do. Political parties should pay their own bills too, and not with excessive tax dollars. They further state that even during the best of economic times, parties should count primarily on the financial support of their own members and their own donors. The opposition parties in Ottawa want to keep the subsidy and are threatening an election to keep their “entitlement.” The subsidy was brought in by former Liberal leader Jean Chrétien over the objections of the Conservative Party in the aftermath of the fraud and corruption exposed by Judge Gomery in the Gomery Commission. After being exposed for the loss of millions of dollars in phoney advertising contracts, the subsidy was intended to replace the $100,000+ contributions from big business supporters the Liberal Party relied on to get elected.

Griffith population aging, growing, says reeve in push for ambulance station By STEVE NEWMAN ORMG Greater Madawaska Reeve Peter Emon continues to push Renfrew County emergency services to establish an ambulance station in Griffith. He expressed this desire in the October meeting of Renfrew County council, and he has followed up with a detailed four-page letter to Mike Nolan, the county’s emergency services director. At present, the County of Lennox and Addington, which is at the west border of Greater Madawaska, operates an ambulance out of Denbigh along Hwy. 41, about 10 kilometres west of Griffith. However, Emon suspects, after reviewing a recent consultants’ report on Lennox and Addington ambulance services and organizational review, that the county’s future emergency services plans will result in termination of a Denbigh ambulance station. This would like mean a repositioning of

Lennox and Addington’s closest ambulance in North Brook, more than an hour away, near Bon Echo Provincial Park. The disappearance of the around-the-clock Denbigh ambulance station, says Emon, would be disastrous for residents of Griffith and Matawatchan, unless there’s an alternative ambulance station nearby, says Emon. The closest ambulance, without a Denbigh ambulance station, might be Calabogie in the winter months, when an ambulance is often standing by the Calabogie Peaks ski hill, or in Eganville in the warmer months. “My residents deserve reliable and prompt service,” writes Emon in his letter dated Nov. 4. Particularly relevant factors, writes Emon, are aging and growth of the Griffith-area population. Emon says he understands the issue of a Griffith ambulance station cannot be determined overnight because of the political and financial fac-

tors, Emon says the residents in the Griffith and Matawatchan area deserve reliable and prompt service. Furthermore, he writes: “Our summer visitors and seasonal residents cer-

tainly have an impact on our neighbourhoods, and I would hope those numbers will also be considered in your deliberations. “Bon Echo Park is located about 45 minutes away from my area, and they

host over 250,000 visitors per year and it is steadily increasing. I think, when one reviews all of the various visitor factors I have mentioned, it becomes apparent a station is needed in Griffith.”

Great showing for Canada World Youth is recruiting local wrestlers at Kingston tourney The following article was provided by Canada World Youth.

Next event Dec. 13 in Renfrew The following article was submitted by the Arnprior Wrestling Club. This past weekend members of the Arnprior Wrestling Club and Arnprior High School team went to the Bill McLeod Memorial Wrestling Tournament in Kingston. Teams from Eastern and Central Ontario were well represented and the high calibre of wrestlers was evident from the first match on. This was the first meet of the year for the team and their hard work at practice really showed. Mark Rousselle, Kevin Mills and Garrett Everding all placed first. Taylor Branje and Megan Rousselle both placed second. Chelsie Legree placed fourth and Richard Mainprize wrestled well but hurt his wrist in his second match and wasn’t able to continue. The team will now prepare for their next tournament which will be held in Renfrew on Dec. 13.

NOW OPEN!

Time for high school students to start thinking post-secondary

This is the time of year when high school students are applying to college and university. They are looking at what options are available for them, and looking deeper to figure out what type of future career interests them. There are many options out there. There is the medical field, education, trades, social services, among many other choices. For those high school students who are applying right now, ensure that you research the jobs that are available after you get your certificate, diploma or degree. Take a look at where you would like to be on a personal level in five or 10 years. For example, if you want to live in Ottawa Valley, taking marine biology may not be a good option for you. By ensuring that you are taking the appropriate course to where you want to be in many years from now, you are avoiding disappointment after you receive your certificate, diploma, or degree in a particular field. Deciding on a future applies to much more than just Grade 12s. Starting in Grade 9 you have to make choices about what general path you would like to take. Grade 11 and 12 are the years that you have the most choice in course selection, specifically tailored to the prerequisites you need to take post secondary education. Plan ahead and even if you are not currently applying to post second-

Some knowledge of digital photography and data bases would be an asset, although training will be provided. The ability to work unsupervised is essential.

Unwrapping the true spirit of Christmas The Arnprior Children’s Drama Club performed The Gift, a tale about the true spirit of Christmas, on Nov. 30, at the Christian Education Centre. The play was written and directed by Eve Chase. Caroling and refreshments followed the performance. The play raised $620 for the Arnprior Food Bank and people brought in donations for the Arnprior Snowsuit Fund and the Food Bank. The actors, ranging in age from preschoolers to Grade 6, “did really well, they were comfortable on stage, they had fun and they want to do it again,” Chase said. Above, Sydney Davlin, Zach Tripp and Elizabeth Robertson perform on stage.

Genealogy workshop at the Arnprior Library Local residents interested in learning about their family history attended a genealogy workshop at the Arnprior Public Library on Nov. 29. Attendants were shown research techniques and useful resources for looking up their family’s past. The workshop included a tour of the archives. The cost was $25 per person with the proceeds going towards the archives. John Smith, chairperson of the archives board, at left, stands near logging camp pictures taken in Arnprior around 1802.

The family of the late Mercedes Theros would like to thank their friends, neighbours, co-workers, the IAM, and family for their cards, food, flowers, prayers and donations to Partners in Caring and the First Baptist Church. We would also like to thank Dr. Mark Robson and the nursing staff at ADMH for the excellent care that our Mom received as a patient there. Every day she would say how well the staff was looking after her. To André Pilon and staff, thank you for your care and attention once more and for making sure everything went well. A special thanks to Bill Kauffeldt for looking after the service, Janice Buck for her kind words, Sheryl Hanniman for the music and also Arnita Kauffeldt for all the help she gave along the way. Our thanks also go out to those who served as pallbearers and the ladies of the First Baptist Church for the lunch. Once more, thank you Dr. Mark Robson and everyone for being so very kind.

We the Rancourt family would like to send thanks to all those who helped us out during our mother Jean’s illness. Special thanks to Laurie Hebert who made it possible to bring our mother home from the hospital, for her last days. Many thanks to the Paramed workers who provided care, especially to Jeannie Storie who was our pillar of strength and went above and beyond her call of duty. Many thanks to neighbours, friends and relatives who called and paid their respect. Your Kindness will always be remembered. Thanks, from Jean Rancourt’s children and grandchildren CL12897

Owner of 1 for 1 Pizza Waso Sherwan has been forced to close his business for much of this week while damage from heavy snow is repaired.

Thank you for keeping our earth green!

By PETER DeWOLF Arnprior Weekender The mixed snow and rain may be holding back the worst of winter’s bitter cold but it has not been a blessing for many people. Ottawa Police Services and the OPP have reported the mixed weather has contributed to many area fender benders with slick roads and sometimes limited visibility. On Tuesday morning alone, Ottawa police reported responding to 27 accidents, of which seven involved minor injuries. Local businesses are also having problems with slick parking lots and leaks. In Arnprior, 1 for 1 Pizza on Daniel Street has been forced to close down operations for most of the past week, as gallons and gallons of water poured into the pizzeria from the wet snow and water that had accumulated on the roof. Arnprior fire officials were on the scene Monday, and advised the management to shut down operations until the leaks could be repaired for fear of an electrical short circuit in the main breakers. The pizzeria apologized to their customers and will resume business as soon as possible. Other businesses also reported leaking roofs in town while city and town crews did their best to keep the heavy wet slush from causing even more havoc on the roads and sidewalks. Police are advising motorists to take their time and be prepared for suddenly changing road and weather conditions. peter.dewolf@metroland.com

Subsidy eliminated big business cash donations frivolously or without regard to where they came from. As your Federal Member of Parliament, I am pleased to represent you on a variety of issues. Whether that issue is eliminating the long gun registry, promoting agriculture, international trade, AECL, the military or jobs in the working forest, I am here to serve you. As always, if you have any concerns of a federal nature, or just want to share your views with me, please do not hesitate to contact my office. Office contact Information: Constituency Office of Cheryl Gallant, MP, 84 Isabella St., Pembroke On. K8A 5S5 or call 613732-4404. If you are long distance you may call the office toll-free at 1-866-2957165. There is no postage required when you write your Federal MP. 268708

Continued from Page 12 The subsidy eliminated big cash donations from business and unions and put an $1,100 cap on other contributions. All eligible political contributions still receive a tax credit. The irony of “Adscam” is that the Liberal Party maintained they did it to fight Quebec separatism. In fact, if the subsidy did not exist, the federal separatist party, which benefits from generous financial support from Canadian taxpayers, would lose their principal source of funding. Ordinary Quebecers do not financially support separatists, why should the rest of Canada? With the most votes, the Conservative Party has the most to lose financially with this proposal. We believe Canadian tax dollars are precious. They must not be spent

Cats can be trained to get along with other pets, kids Continued from Page 30 Cat-lovers don’t pussyfoot around, they know the little purr balls are the cat’s meow. Cats come in many sizes and colors, not to mention a myriad of purrsonalities. Unlike dogs, cats are far more independent and far more intelligent. Cats, unlike dogs, do not require kitten obedience classes. They are affectionate when they want to be and can be extremely playful. For someone looking for an independent pet that requires very little maintenance, for someone living in an apartment or for someone who finds it hard to get around, a cat could be a great compan-

ion. Other than a litter box, food and water a cat requires nothing more than a place to sit in the sun and let life slowly go by. Cats, just like dogs, should be spayed and neutered as this will keep your pet from wandering at night and from contributing to an overpopulation of furry felines. Yearly visits to the veterinarian will guarantee your feline friend is healthy and up to date on its shots. Although I do not believe in letting my pets out alone unsupervised, if you choose to let them roam then speak to your veterinarian about flea

never have I considered getting their claws ripped out. I never lost a couch, carpets or drapes to a cat. Don’t get me wrong I have had the odd scratch here and rip there but nothing that had to be replaced. A water bottle set on spray works like magic at training even the most stubborn feline. Cats can get along with other pets including birds and can be trained to be sociable around children. You can even fit them with a cat harness and take them out for walks. Cat nip can work wonders at keeping them occupied. It’s amazing to think that something as simple as a piece of string tied to

Perhaps we should learn from our feline friends and find time to stop and play and tick prevention. A break-away collar will prevent your cat from hanging itself should they get caught on something, for that same reason I do not recommend a flea collar. Speak to your veterinarian about administering flea drops instead. Keep your feline indoors in the dead of winter and in the heat of the summer. Diet is very important to your cat. Not only is being overweight unhealthy for your cat, being overweight can

also make it difficult for your cat to groom oneself. Usually you will find the back end of an overweight cat to be matted, cover in feces and smelling from dried urine. Declawing or mutilation as I call it is in my opinion unnecessary. Cats can be trained to be hospitable and with patience can be trained to redirect their feline temptation to destroy your home and instead enjoy a scratch post. Over the years I have owned a cat or two and

a door knob can provide hours of playtime for your cat. There is nothing like watching a cat play for hours with a tiny piece of paper oblivious to all that is going on in the world. Perhaps we should learn from our feline friends and find time to stop and play with a piece of string attached to a door knob!

Bell answers Senators’ call By Rob Brodie OttawaSenators.com Finally, Brendan Bell can say he’s exactly where he wants to be. Even if it took a little longer than he’d hoped or expected. With their offence struggling to light up the scoreboard, the Ottawa Senators simply couldn’t ignore the numbers the offensive-minded Bell was ringing up with their American Hockey League affiliate in Binghamton, N.Y. “Fifteen points in 15 games doesn’t hurt,” Bell said when asked what made Senators general manager Bryan Murray and head coach Craig Hartsburg decide he was the man they needed to add some punch to their blue line. “Bryan and Craig can’t watch every game in Binghamton, so it’s nice (for them) to hear there was a goal and an assist and the power play is doing well and all the things I’m expected to be doing are going well.” Though he has yet to produce any points, Hartsburg has been pleased with what Bell has brought to the Senators lineup. “I think he’s played well,”

The skinny: It’s the only appearance by the Penguins and superstar Sidney Crosby at Scotiabank Place this season, with an earlier Ottawa ‘home’ game between the teams played in Stockholm. Crosby and NHL scoring leader Evgeni Malkin again form one of the league’s top 1-2 scoring punches. Marian Hossa has moved on to Detroit but the Pens hope new additions Miroslav Satan and Ruslan Fedotenko can pick up the scoring slack left by his departure. Brooks Orpik and Kris Letang head up what is still a young defence corps in front of goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, who elevated his game in a major way last season.

would have. He admitted he was a little nervous coming in here but going down (to Binghamton), he’s played pretty well and done what we thought he would do at camp.” Bell, a third-round pick by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2001, knows exactly what he brings to the table, and so do the Senators. “I’m an offensive guy and I like to try to generate offence from the back end,” he said. “I think that’s the one area I can really help.” The Senators are also hoping Bell can add some juice to their power play, which has seen its production drop off in recent games. He welcomes that challenge as

well. “That’s the one thing they spoke about, even after training camp when I was cut,” said the 25year-old Bell. “Go down there and be very good on the power play. To this point, I have been and they’ve giving me an opportunity here to play on the power play. “If we can get that moving in the right direction, I think that can help not only the team but myself…. Things have been going pretty well in the three games I’ve been around. The team is playing better and, hopefully, starting to turn the corner. “I’m just trying to contribute to that as best as I can.”

said Hartsburg. “He’s quick, he can move the puck and I think he’s smart in finding open people. We’ll continue to try him, but I think he’s done a good job for us so far.” The former Ottawa 67’s captain signed with the Senators as a free agent over the summer and came to training camp with one goal in mind. After spending most of last season with the Phoenix Coyotes’ AHL farm team in San Antonio, Tex., Bell wanted full-time employment in the National Hockey League in a city that happens to be his hometown. Needless to say, when the Senators demoted him to Binghamton before the end of camp, it was a bitter pill to swallow. But Bell didn’t allow himself to mope for too long. “It was difficult,” he said. “With a shortened camp and (the season openers) in Sweden and all that stuff, it happened pretty quickly. But I got over it pretty quick. I took 10 or 15 minutes, felt sorry for myself and then that was over with pretty fast. “Then I went to Binghamton and figured that I’d be as good as I possibly could every day and get back here as quick as possible.” Said Hartsburg: “He didn’t have the camp that we thought he
