County Expo 150 celebration a smash hit Anniversary festivities attract large crowds SHERRY HAAIMA Sherry.haaima@metroland.com

Wasn’t that a party? Renfrew County Expo 150 organizers can give themselves a huge pat on the back. There may have been a few snags – for example, traffic tie-ups Saturday caused headaches for Expo visitors and area residents. But by all accounts, attendance at the anniversary event was even better than organizers had hoped and people were delighted with the event, which included entertainment on three stages, displays, vendors and more. It gives Arnprior something to emulate when it celebrates its 150th birthday next year. At Saturday’s Renfrew County Idol adult competition, early estimates indicated more than 17,000 people were in attendance during the day. With 10,500 people attending Friday and 6,000 Thursday, the totals looked great and the organizing committee can be congratulated on a job well done, said Expo 150 chair Bob Sweet. Arnprior connections evident at Expo

Continued from front By the end of the weekend, the estimated total attendance was more than 40,000. “That’s absolutely outstanding,” said Sweet. “It makes all the hard work worthwhile.” Saturday’s mid-day Freedom of the County parade was another big highlight of the four-day Expo 150. “It’s the single most important respect that can be afforded your military by the municipality,” said Sweet. The parade featured an estimated 6,000 present and past soldiers who have served Canadian Forces Base Petawawa, plus cadet corps members. Featured guests included retired Major-Gen. Bob Meating and Deputy-Chief of Land Staff Al Howard. Elsewhere, in the municipal booth, the county’s volunteers were enjoying themselves. Arnprior chief librarian Karen Deluca said lots of visitors Among the dignitaries on hand for the ribbon cutting are, from left, Eric Hanna, Chris- were dropping into the Town of tine Blimkie, John Yakabuski, Steve Hudson, Dr. Christine Schriver, Liberal MPP Madeleine Arnprior’s booth to have a chat. “A lot of people are coming Meilleur and Ted Strike. Arnprior’ or ‘We used to cottage near Arnprior,’” said Deluca. “It’s nice to make those kinds of connections.” Renfrew Coun. Tom Anderson was impressed with the event and those who came out to take part. “These are great crowds,” he said as a steady stream of people wove through the tent. In particular, the town’s past was a point of interest for those who stopped to talk. Saturday was also home to fiddling and stepdancing records in the afternoon, with about 1,000 crowded around Stage 1 to watch a fever of activity. In Sunday’s closing ceremonies there was more reason for celebration. Those in attendance linked hands or arms while singing Auld Lange Syne, for what Sweet termed a “fitting close to four glorious days.” - With files from Steve Newman

Emergency completion celebrated DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com

Speakers at the Arnprior District Memorial Hospital emergency room official opening could speak freely about some of the problems they used to face: an observation room that staff couldn’t observe; crucial areas that stretchers couldn’t fit through; emergency doors that saw all types of patients come and go; a roof too low for ambulances to fit under; the route from the operating room to the morgue passed through the waiting room; not enough electrical outlets. “Clearly things have changed since then,” said Arnprior Hospital CEO Eric Hanna on Tuesday morning, 18 months after renovations began. A small crowd of politicians, hospital staff and volunteers, construction workers and residents gathered at the back of the hospital for the ribbon-cutting and barbecue lunch to celebrate the completion of the $12.5-million project. Liberal MPP Madeleine Meilleur, a former nurse from Ottawa, spoke of the government’s $9 million contribution helping to reduce wait times. The Liberals have also made it so 94 per cent of all Ontarians have a family doctor, and 13,000 additional nurses are trained, she said. “Ontario is a national leader in reduced wait times. It is one of our great successes,” Meilleur said. “I know first-hand how these changes will have a positive effect on everybody at the hospital.” She also congratulated the people of Arnprior and area for a “very impressive” show of fundraising the remaining $3 million. Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MPP John Yakabuski noted he and Meilleur were attending the ground-breaking ceremony where his now-deceased father, former MPP Paul Yakabuski, likely attended the opening of the last facility.

He then recalled his first visit to the hospital when he was told conditions were “unacceptable” and that the province ought to take action. Also in the audience were Doug and Helen Scheels; Arnprior Reeve Walter Stack; town councillors Lyle Anderson, Ted Strike and Lynn Grinstead; McNabBraeside Deputy Mayor Christine Blimkie; hospital board chairman Steve Hudson; foundation chairwoman Lori Van Wyk; and board member Ted Kelly, along with Brian Burke, Jean McNab, former Arnprior mayor Terry Gibeau, former newspaper publisher Derek Walter and others. Chief of staff Dr. Christine Schriver lauded the job done by architects and some 200 construction workers. “It’s always nicer to work in a brighter, more up-to-date surrounding,” she said of the spacious surroundings with an abundance of natural light. Hanna related comments by a nurse who said a new diagnostic monitoring machine is portable, saving time and improving chances for patients. “That’s a $350,000 piece of lifesaving equipment that you, the community purchased,” he said. It cost far more than the first hospital built at the John Street North location, said Strike. It cost a mere $53,000 in 1943; again the money was raised by residents. “This is wonderful. A dream come true,” he said. “We’ll be able to better attract doctors with this new equipment and provide a better quality of life.” He added that ER visits were at 18.000 to 19,000 before the renovations; now the ER can handle 25,000. Afterward, former foundation chairman John Carkner indicated the fundraising campaign was lengthy but worth it. “It’s wonderful to see the ribbon finally cut,” he said. “It seemed like a daunting challenge, but we can all be proud of our accomplishment.”

Coun. Lynn Grinstead asked her Arnprior council colleagues at Monday’s meeting if they liked the new tagline and bookmark design proposed for the town. Each murmured mild approval of the new tagline: Where opportunity flows and adventure grows. Council gave approval after the fact to the purchase and distribution of bookmarks carrying the tagline to be distributed at last weekend’s Renfrew County 150 Expo at the Pembroke airport. The bookmark depicts a tall tree before the fountain in Robert Simpson Park. Along with the overall green

colour are red, white and blue communicating town information. On back is the town crest, red on blue, of medieval-like animals and a phrase in Latin. Grinstead and the town’s 150th anniversary committee are hoping for a new logo produced by someone in town. The committee is offering $500 for logo design to appear on merchandise such as mugs and t-shirts, along with town literature. The design can reflect the town’s history or contemporary life; it can be a collage or simple image. Everyone from students to graphic designers are invited to make submissions. The committee is also asking for a commemorative print as part of the 150th anniversary celebrations. The

artist will be allowed to earn royalties from prints, while the original will hang in town hall. There is no cash award for this contest. The committee will review concept drawings after the Aug. 24 deadline. Meanwhile, the province offers a grant for town square capital projects related to 150th anniversary festivities. The town’s 150th anniversary committee is entertaining concept drawings for an upgraded Hydro Park, which they are calling town square, with a tender process to follow if the grant is won. Landscape designers and others who submit concept drawings do so at their own expense, Grinstead explained, because the exercise is give the commit-

tee ideas that they will use as standards to follow when the tender process is in place. Grinstead said she envisions park benches, interlocking bricks and flowers at the park located just east of Madawaska Bridge. She said it should make a good entrance to downtown, and will eventually link with waterfront developments. She added that an information sign onsite will be called Peek at the Prior.

The sewage smell east of the Madawaska Bridge has been greatly reduced, says Coun. Ted Strike, thanks to staff ’s process of pouring water over treatment machinery to dilute and cool it down. Strike told Arnprior council Monday that materials from makeshift efforts will be removed soon to make way for a long-lasting solution NEW BUILDING INSPECTOR Jean Michel (J.M.) Gagne is Arnprior’s new chief building official/property standards officer (CBO). Until two weeks ago when Gagne started, all non-bylaw issues, such as safety having to do with structural elements, was done by a two-day a week inspec-

tor. “I’m glad to hear we are back to a five-day a week CBO,” said Deputy Mayor Ted Strike, who chaired Arnprior council’s meeting Monday in the absence of Mayor David Reid. David Connelly retired from the position not long ago. DEPUTY FIRE CHIEF The next community safety/ fire prevention officer will have to add another title to the job: deputy fire chief. Arnprior Council learned Monday of Chief John Okum’s plan to post the position both internally and externally in the hope of getting candidates with much experience in the fire act and other areas. He told council the department has seen the departure of some senior personnel and is expecting to lose more in the

near future, which could place the department in a “substandard position.” The new deputy fire chief, a position that is paid a non-union salary range of $53,000 to $63,000, will help offset those losses. Okum likened the department’s situation to that of the wastewater and water works facilities. Both needed upgrades to reflect the needs of a growing town. He said fire equipment is “satisfactory” but an experienced deputy chief is necessary. A volunteer captain and vicecaptain are also needed. CAO Larry Donaldson said the new deputy will easily be able to step in when Okum is away, and that the best qualified person will be hired – whether from inside the department or from outside. The deputy volunteer position will be maintained and will be expected to mentor the new deputy chief.

RED OAK

Arnprior council has accepted the resignation of Rosalind Spencer from the Arnprior and District Museum Board and the appointment of Dalila Catterill as representative citizen member.

FOR EXPO The Township of Mcnab-Braeside officially unveiled its Expo 150 tree at Waba Museum Park in White Lake June 3. McNab-Braeside Mayor Mary Campbell was joined by Arnprior Mayor David Reid and Reeve Walter Stack in the ceremony dedicating the red oak. The tree is a gift from the County of Renfrew in recognition of its 150th anniversary. Each of the 17 municipalities that make up the county were given a tree to plant in honour of the milestone anniversary. Arnprior’s tree is in Robert Simpson Park.

Existing development rules prove costly to Arnprior homebuilder

Continued from front The changes are: • The creation of town standards for engineers to follow. The developer will then have a clear understanding of the town’s expectations before any review. Currently, developers submit plans and wait for feedback on sizes for slopes, pipes, sidewalks and the like; • Pre-approving certain engineering firms whose drawings meet the town’s standards. The firms’ internal peer review system will ensure errors are caught when it comes to smaller proposals. The town might still hire an independent firm to review stormwater management and other large issues. This process is in place at many municipalities. The town’s public works advisory committee will pick firms for council’s consideration. Currently, the town’s consultant reviews all submissions – even on details that are strictly empirical and answerable if standards existed; • The town will reduce upfront payment for internal lights, parking lots and other costs covered by developers from 100 per cent to 25. But only for onsite works, not those on public property. The latter remains at 100 per cent. “I think it makes us a lot friendlier,” Reeve Walter Stack said. “This is a great piece of work.” Homebuilder Scott McEwan agrees, saying the changes will take “months off ” the approval process. He called it the best move in 20 years for anyone looking to develop anything in town. It will also save taxpayer dollars on consultation fees. “I think the council in there right now is heading in the right direction.” However, the absence of standards for all developers to follow on things such as pipe sizes has caused numerous problems for both business people and town staff over the years. The latest instance arose during Monday’s meeting, and involved McEwan’s planned Campbellbrook Village subdivision.

Smith recommended council reject McEwan’s proposal to run backyards down to Jed Creek, an environmentally sensitive zone. However, council had approved the developer on the other side of the creek to run backyards down to the creek. At that time, council didn’t want liability should an injury occur. “I think we have a problem,” Stack said. Again McEwan agrees, saying it could take away three acres of backyard space. He plans to challenge the decision before council, and is confident he’ll win on the basis that precedent has been set. But he isn’t pleased that it will cost him $3,000 to $7,000 for a study showing town is contradicting itself and thus discriminating against him. “What I don’t like is you don’t get time to talk about it beforehand,” he said. “It just goes to council (starting an arbitrary process).” However, two more decisions that night will cost McEwan another $7,000 each in studies he says are redundant. One has the town rejecting a new road linking with Baskin Drive because it will force too much traffic near an elementary school. McEwan said 22 roads already empty onto Baskin Drive, one more won’t make much difference. The second has the town saying no to commercial development on land zoned commercial along Highway 417. The argument is that access would prove too onerous and that enough commercial space exists along the highway. While he plans to fight both, the decisions made Monday will cost the developer about $21,000 in studies alone, and many months of delay. “Don’t get me wrong. I’m happy with the way things are progressing. The town is trying to work with developers,” he said. “There’s going to be a few growing pains, though.” Frustration among developers played a significant role in last fall’s election that saw many new councillors ushered in.

will begin the process to draft a new bylaw at next week’s council meeting. “We want to revise the bylaw to make it as strong as we can,” said Mayor Mary Campbell. However, she cautioned that it won’t do the township or the residents any good to create changes that can’t be enforced or will embroil the township in expensive legal battles that it would not likely win. She also noted it can’t have some township residents living under different

laws than others. It’s “embarrassing” that the township has received two applications for exceptions to the noise bylaw from residents so they can hold parties. When asking the residents if noise from the quarry operation is their major concern, she received a mixed reaction. Mike Battison said it is for those closest to the pit, but odour and anxiety about water quality is a bigger worry for those farther away. “It is your main issue be-

Repairs to Van Dusen Drive, a long stretch of road behind the airport, could cost the town $150,000 according to a verbal report given to Arnprior Reeve Walter Stack. Council is under pressure to do something about the pothole-ridden road after a large contingent of homeowners packed town hall demanding action. Staff told council a report with quotes for repaving and tarring and chipping will be ready for the June 27 meeting. Stack agreed that the road is in bad shape.

Canada Post decided Tuesday to close down its operations in the face of rotating strikes by its workers. Picket lines expanded all across the country, including Arnprior, where workers began picketing Wednesday morning. However, a strike of Air Canada employees could be ended by back-to-work legislation by week’s end. The Canada Post action follows 12 days of increasingly costly and damaging rotating strikes being carried out by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW). The company says accelerating decline in volumes and revenue combined with the inability to deliver mail on a timely and safe basis has left it with no choice. Canada Post estimated Tuesday its losses are approaching $100 million. As well, several incidents raised concerns about the ability to move the mail while keeping employees and customers safe. The two sides remain far apart on several fundamental

In a news release, Canada Post said it believes a lockout is the “best way to bring a timely resolution to this impasse and force the union to seriously consider proposals that address the declining mail volumes and the $3.2-billion pension deficit.” CUPW accused Canada Post of “aggressively trying to force postal workers out on a fullscale national strike” in order to secure back-to-work legislation from the majority Conservative government. While remaining non-commital about the postal strike, federal Labour Minister Lisa Raitt has indicated, less than 24 hours since the strike began Tuesday, that she plans to table back-to-work legislation for Air Canada workers, as soon as Thursday. Leaders of the strikers, members of the Canadian Autoworkers working in customer service and sales in major airports and call centres, said the speedy action shows there is collusion by the Conservative federal government and Air Canada “to strip workers of their rights.”

Big alligator attracts a large crowd at Expo 150 Boat will be at McNab Days on June 25 STEVE NEWMAN steve.newman@metroland.com

Expo 150 had its share of critters, including hens, goats, sheep, cows and one very big alligator. Only this alligator wasn’t part of the agricultural exhibit, but the forestry one. A big alligator, too, with a base of nearly 40 feet. The W.D. Stalker Alligator steam tug boat is 50 feet long, with its two decks, measures 10 feet wide, and weighs about 25 tonnes. It also attracted an estimated 2,000 visitors to its decks during Expo 150, not the least of which was the very last visitor, a Lloyd Lortie of Gatineau, Que., who split firewood for the boiler on the alligator tug boat, stationed at Cedar Lake in Algonquin Provincial Park, in the 1940s. “He was in his glory,” says Alligator aficionado Dave Lemkay of Douglas who spent much of the Expo 150 long weekend on the Alligator.

This alligator was a pivotal transporter in the late 1800s when the forestry system lacked a sufficient roads system to move timber. This is the only functioning steamboat alligator among nearly 300 built in Simcoe, Ont., since 1889. Douglas resident Dave Lemkay, a long-time advocate of the forestry industry, is joined on deck, at centre and right, by Don Lawson and Dave Woods during Expo 150. Lawson and Woods are part of the volunteer-based alligator committee in Simcoe. When was critical to get wood to mills during the 1800s, horses and men were used to advance booms of logs down quieter sections of waterways, which were the highways to market. With the arrival of the revolutionary Alligators, travel time became exponentially faster.

The same tug boats were also shipped to locations as far away as Newfoundland and Minnesota and used well into the middle of the 20th century. The Alligator, in the words of Lemkay, “revolutionized the riverdrive operations across the nearnorth by combining the technology

Along with the Alligator came a core group of volunteers from Simcoe, where the alligators were built from 1889 until the 1930s. Those same volunteers were among those who in 1997 salvaged a derelict alligator from Atikokan and rebuilt it to be the W.D. Stalker. Don Lawson, another member of Simcoe’s alligator committee, says it’s wonderful to watch the passion of his fellow committee members. Dave Woods, the tugboat’s steam engineer, said he’s involved to help preserve history. The history is also preserved after Lemkay convinced author Harry Barrett to take on a bevy of historical information on the Alligator that had been collected by noted forester Clarence Coons. Coons died in 2006, but Barrett went on to co-author the book, Alligators of the North, with Coons. The history chronicles the work by West and Peachy Company, which built about 280 alligators. The Alligator will have

other steam boat company during the June 25 flotilla from Norway Bay to Braeside. The parade participants will include steamboats owned by Dr. Bill Burwell of Renfrew and Bruno Martens of Pembroke; riverdriver sweep boats owned by Logs End; a camboose scow (a riverdriver bunkhouse and kitchen) owned by the Haughtons but formerly belonging to ICO’s Chenaux Boom; a Pembroke pointer boat; as well as vessels from Burnstown Rowing Club and several pleasure craft. At its home in Simcoe, the Alligator makes periodic, short trips on the Lynn River each year, but the trip down the Ottawa River will be its first in its refitted lifetime. Another notable visitor to the Alligator during Expo 150 was former Horton Township reeve Bud Doering. As a summer student in 1946, he worked on the William M. Alligator, which is displayed at the Pioneer Loggers Museum in Algonquin Park. See ‘Alligators’ Page 7

This poor kitty was in terrible shape when first found but has now recovered and is ready to find a great home. Chachi is a three-yearold neutered male who is quiet, preferring to lie around in the sunshine. He is very affectionate and loves attention. Noise, odour, water concerns Continued from Page 5 “The (noise) bylaw is there for a reason. Why is it not being enforced?” he asked. If he had known how noisy it is he would have never bought his house, he added. Battison said the residents aren’t fanatics or whiners, but just want the township to help them deal with problems caused by plant. The odour and noise were dissipated somewhat by a wet spring, but the plant still sounds like a jet taking off at times, he said.

Expo 150: What a show xpo 150 brochures handed out during the 150th-anniversary celebrations invited visitors to “to be part of a Journey through Time,” while enjoying the activities, exhibits and presentations dealing with our past, present and future. Paratrooper Cpl. Corey DougIt was that, to be las of the SkyHawks descends sure, as more than at the Expo 150 opening. 40,000 spectators flocked to the event from near and not so near. One visitor was Valleyite Kate Caldwell, now living in Cobourg, who was walking about with her two children and enjoying the sites and sounds. They included the light-armoured reconnaissance vehicle (a Coyote) that her son, Kieran, was in while handling a machine gun with the help of a soldier from CFB Petawawa. Minutes later, Bonnechere Valley Fire Department mascot Burny (aka firefighter Melissa Gogolin) is walking down a main street of Expo 150, waving and receiving the occasional hug from a youngster. Minutes later, another visitor who recalls watching the famed Montreal Canadiens in the Montreal Forum decades ago, gets up close to view the Hockey Hall of Fame exhibit that includes the sweater worn by famed Chicago Black Hawks goalie Glenn Hall when they won the 1961 Stanley Cup. The sweater of the best uniform in hockey looks distinctly older than the sweater displayed beside it, of prolific scorer Luc Robitaille, when he played with the Detroit Red Wings. The sweaters were part of Renfrew County residents’ connection with notable Canadian history, just like so many, many parts of Expo 150 were – from business exhibits on solar panels, insulation and tourist destinations, to the agricultural animal exhibits, to the exhibits by municipalities, service clubs and businesses. There was so much to see and enjoy. And many did. Thanks for the show, Expo 150 organizers.

I caught your brief article in the ChronicleGuide (June 9) regarding wild cats in McNabBraeside. This is an issue that is close to my heart, as I have adopted many such cats over the years and attempted to institute sanctuary for them here in Arnprior. I used to work at the Arnprior Animal Hospital and (very briefly) the Arnprior & District Humane Society back in the ‘90s. I became aware of the town’s policy of trapping and euthanizing feral cats (without a holding period to allow them to be claimed) while I was at Arnprior Animal Hospital in the mid to late 1990s. Bill Ingram had previously “taken care of ” these cats for the town when they brought them to him. When he retired, they suddenly came to my place of employment. I discussed the issue with one of the veterinarians there who acknowledged her own cat would likely appear quite wild if trapped in one of the live traps employed by the town. She managed to get the humane society here to at least hold the cats briefly to allow some chance of them being claimed by their owner/ caretaker. When I began working at the Humane Society here in Arnprior, I presented them with information on how trap/neuter/release programs work to decrease cat populations - how caretakers are amazed after instituting such a program that there are no more kittens. Trapping and euthanizing creates a vacuum. The space left is quickly filled by another cat. A colony can only support so many cats. If it is filled with neutered cats, there is no room for more to come in. Canada’s Parliament Hill houses such a colony and has done so for years. If the public knew what some Humane Societies actually do without the public’s knowledge, I believe there would be a serious outcry. There are a lot of folks who let their cats roam freely in Arnprior. I’ve heard the Humane Society in Arnprior is now a ‘no-kill’ shelter, and it appears to me now to be better than it was. I think all cats could use a hand from some vets willing to put their money where their mouth is and really make a difference for them. I’m sure you can find great articles of information on the net about this. Here’s a link to the Cats of Parliament Hill’s blog for one: www. synapse.net/kgerken/CatsBlog.HTM.

When nature flexes her muscles hit the house, but one big pine precariously hung over it. Both cars were crushed under fallen pines. The power lines and pole lay tangled in the mess, the transformer smashed Michael Runtz on the ground. power. No Nature’s Way No phones. No cars. I felt helpless. I found a flashlight and located a power box that I had fortunately charged the previous week. It powered our recently acquired high-speed hub and my computer providing me with email service! I frantically sent out messages to Ann (who was in Toronto and fortunately missed the event) and my sister. After half an hour I had no reply, so I began to email friends. Finally contact was made and I reported my situation. It has now been six days since the event and we still have no Hydro or phone service. A newly purchased generator is supplying temporary power.

We tend to get so lost in our artificial world that we lose touch with reality and are shocked when Nature demonstrates her power. Whether it is tornadoes in the southwestern United States, earthquakes in Asia, or ice storms locally, we are quickly reminded of our vulnerability and residency in the real world when extreme weather strikes. Last week I was humbled by the power of wind. It was late Wednesday afternoon when I noticed how dark it was becoming. It was unbearably hot and there was no wind. I went to take clothes off the line and heard a loud sound, something like a train approaching in the distance. My stomach knotted when realized that it was the sound of wind. Within seconds the lake was being whipped into frenzy and the wind began to rush around the house. I ran inside as trees began to thrash in a wild frenzy. Soon they were sideways and snapping in half like twigs. I went to the basement for shelter. It was a microburst – a one-directional tornado. When the wind finally abated, I ventured outside to find more than a dozen trees downed. Amazingly none

The new pole might arrive tomorrow, but there it will be some while until full power is restored. Yet I look out my window and see Rose-breasted Grosbeaks eating sunflower seeds and Tiger Swallowtails nectaring on the garden plants. These animals survived without generators or emergency crews with chainsaws. They did not spend hours on phones haggling with insurance companies and are carrying on as if nothing had happened. For a few, such as the Pine Warblers that were nesting in one of the big pines that were uprooted, there have been consequences. But perhaps the pair survived and will re-nest in another pine. The fallen trees will soon be food for Long-horned Beetles and fungi of various forms and colours. New growth will spring up in the sun-drenched gaps and as time passes new trees will take the place of the fallen giants. Nature simply carries on as if nothing happened. Regardless of the state of my cars, power, or landscape, that tells me that everything really is okay. The Nature Number is 613-387-2503; email is mruntz@start.ca.

It was a beautiful day for a walk, for those of the two-and -four-legged variety. The Arnprior and District Humane Society hosted Walk in the Park, one of its major fundraisers, on Sunday, June 12 at Robert Simpson Park, raising $9,170. Diane Windsor was the top fundraiser in the Top Dog adult category, bringing in just over $1,500, second place was Sheila Spalding, third was Donna and Keith Gardner. Top Pup winners: (under 14) were: Adrienne Cavers, Kate Babineauand Malachy Hutchinson. Shelter officials are very pleased with the success of the walkathon. One of the Ottawa Valley’s most-loved bands will headline this year’s White Pine Festival. The Countrymen, fresh from their 50th anniversary celebrations, take to the stage Saturday evening of the Aug. 28-29 event. “We have a lot of things going on this year,” says co-organizer Art Smith. “It’s a big lineup.” Organizers estimate 6-7,000 people attended the inaugural WPF, held last year. “This year we’re hoping for about 20,000 people,” said Smith. Things are shaping up quite well for the end-of-summer event, and organizers are busily preparing. “We still need sponsorships and we’re looking for some more

buskers,” said Smith. One of the big things we’re bringing in is the OPP Golden Helmets, who’re hard to get,” said Smith. The Golden Helmets are slated to perform at 10 a.m. Saturday. SATURDAY EVENTS Also on Saturday, Arnprior Legion Branch 174 hosts a breakfast to start the day and vendors will be moving into the downtown area around 9 a.m. The O’Brien Theatre hosts a classic film festival Saturday and Sunday. “The event will feature all the classic films from the ‘20s, ‘30s, right through to the present,” said Smith. Admission to the theatre is $2. At the main stage at Giant Tiger on Saturday, Junkyard Sym-

phony entertains at 11 a.m. and karaoke begins at noon. From 2-3 p.m., Jake Differ, a Junonominated children’s performer and Canadian Children’s Music Award winner, takes to the stage. Junkyard Symphony is back at 4 p.m. The Countrymen perform at 7:30 pm. Mike Asselin will also entertain the festival crowds with his bluegrass band Potluck and Liz Sterling and friends have a Mac Beattie tribute in the works for the event. The Arnprior Community Policing committee is organizing bed races planned for Saturday, as well, noted Smith. The Arnprior Remote Control Club will be on-site at GT with a model airplane simulator and various remote control vehicles.

The Ottawa Valley Muskie Club also hosts a fish derby that begins Friday night and runs all day Saturday. The beer garden opens at noon near GT and runs until midnight. A $5 festival button will get you into the beer The Giant Tiger train, always popular with young and old alike, will be running all day Saturday, said Smith. SUNDAY HAPPENINGS The Arnprior Lions kick off Sunday’s events with a pancake breakfast at the Masonic Hall in Arnprior. The Sunday events are held mostly at Robert Simpson Park and include a classic car show featuring cars from 1969 and earlier.

Dragonboat races, featuring Arnprior’s own Prior Chest Nuts and their craft, are part of the Sunday schedule. Sunday entertainment includes Jake Differ, the Arnprior Line Dancers and funk blues band To Be Determined, which is sure to wow the crowd, said Smith. Smith encouraged area residents to mark their calendars and plan to attend the growing annual festival. The food vendor lineup is shaping up to look pretty tasty, said Smith, with Belgian waffles and gourmet lemonade among the treats available for hungry visitors. Arnprior Aerospace will auction off a fire truck that’s been with the company for more than 40 years to raise money for charity. The subject of the auction, to be held on Canada Day, is a 1964 Dodge ‘330’ Power Wagon with auxiliary fire-fighting equipment. Arnprior Aerospace will donate the proceeds to the Arnprior Hospital ‘Partners in Caring Foundation’ in support of new digital mammography equipment. The auction will be held Friday, July 1 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Canada Day Car Show at the Quality Inn in Arnprior. A reserve price of $2,000 minimum will be placed on the vehicle. A table for the silent auction will be on site. The truck runs great and for a 1964 model overall condition is excellent, but is being sold as-is. The truck was brought from Boeing Seattle to the Arnprior Plant in 1970 to provide support to the Boeing Helicopter Program that was run out of Arnprior at the time. The

Meeting room available at Lorne’s Electric JOHN CARTER john.carter@metroland.com

A specialized meeting room, a large mural, new green energy products. Lorne’s Electric of Arnprior is providing new ways to serve its customers and its community. The Madawaska Street business, owned by Eric and Trish Glahs, unveiled the Richard John meeting room, at a recent open house. The board room, named after Eric’s late father, provides a convenient, professional setting for businesses and organizations to hold meetings, display products or hold training sessions. People can also rent it for such things as private family meetings, such as a reading of a will. “It’s been encouraging to hear the response,” said Trish Glahs. “We’ll see if it meets a need. We hope so.” Given the emphasis on health and safety by Lorne’s Electric, she would be happy to see it be used

for displays of products in those fields. The room, which has a variety of services from high speed Internet and surround sound to copying and a fridge full of juices and water, can be rented for four or six hours. Trish Glahs said the room, tucked in amongst the company’s offices, makes good use of the space that was once the Lions Hall. It is a convenient meeting place “because it’s close to everything,” she said, noting there is plenty of parking and it’s within walking distance to several restaurants. The company had donated the room for the Prior Chestnuts dragon boat cancer survivors to hold their meetings. The customer appreciation open house was held to celebrate the company’s 50 years in business and the 20 years that the Glahs’ have owned it. Eric Glahs started as an apprentice and eventually he and Trish bought the business from Lorne

The company is also a community booster, supporting the Arnprior District Memorial Hospital’s Partners in Caring campaign, local sports teams, a theatre group and the high school co-op program. It has commissioned a large mural on its building, entitled Summer Days in Arnprior, to help promote the White Pine Festival. For more on the company, see the website www.lorneselectric. ca.

Arnprior student to share Ugandan experiences The Arnprior Public Library will host a slide show presentation Tuesday, June 28 on an “incredibly rewarding” library project in Uganda that has a local link. Jocelyn Preece, who grew up in Arnprior, will give the public presentation at 7 p.m. The Arnprior District High School 2003 graduate will share her experiences in setting up a community library in Uganda. After graduating from the University of Ottawa, where she studied international development, Preece was in Uganda for five months, between October 2010 and March 2011. Her library project was part of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) International Youth Internship Program. Along with fellow intern Andrea Dyck from Vancouver, she helped to set up a village library, basically from scratch. Working with members of the community, they helped by fundraising, purchasing books, hiring local

staff, and setting up library programs for children. “The people we met and worked with were wonderfully generous and welcoming,” said Preece. “We quickly felt at home in the village and both Andrea and myself are hoping to work on this project long-term.” The presentation will include photos, stories and information about life in Uganda, and about their experiences starting a village library. Adults are encouraged to bring their teens or pre-teens to the presentation. “We are very excited about this talk,” said chief libarian Karen DeLuca, noting it is the start of a new aspect of the library’s adult programming. She explained the library is anticipating the launch of a travel club with presentations on interesting places people in the community have visited. Iceland is next on the schedule, likely in early fall, she said.

Another art show for library The Arnprior Public Library will host its second Community Art Show on Saturday, June 24. Local artists will display their work throughout the library from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Each participant will be able to display one of their pieces in the corridor in the lower level of the library. The first art show in April was met with great enthusiasm with more than 300 visitors. The June show will feature an entirely different slate of artists. It is the library’s aim to showcase most of the artists in the community in four shows per year, explained chief libarian Karen DeLuca. She reports the library is also planning a children’s art display in the corridor sometime this summer.

Arnprior District High School’s top male and female athletes for the 2010-2011 season are, from left, Jesse Andrews, Alicia Pan, Chanelle Fortin and John Buffam. Photos by Sherry Haaima her retirement. Moore outlined a wealth of accomplishments from the 2010-11 season, which included an EOSSAA win and silver medal at the provincials for senior girls rugby and the ADHS senior football team going all the way to capture the Ontario title. “The boys of fall made the town sit up and take note and even proclaim Redmen Day. They are Lanark/Renfrew EOSSAA and National Capital champs,” said Moore. Other highlights include: Rowan Morris and Grant Des-

jardins headed to OFSAA for cross-country; a UOVHSAA golf championship; a UOVHSAA championship for senior girls rugby; a UOVHSAA and EOSSAA championship for junior girls basketball; four wrestlers sent to OFSAA; a county championship for the alpine ski team; a UOVHSAA and EOSSAA championship for the junior boys basketball team; UOVHSAA and EOSSAA wins for Alicia Pan in badminton; tennis gold at UOVHSAA in junior boys singles for Mike Shoveller and gold for Andrew Rueckwald and Brendan Stashick in junior boys doubles; a UOVHSAA championship for senior girls and senior boys soccer; and a county championship, ‘AA’ EOSAA championship and impressive showing at OFSAA for the track and field team. short time at a school in Guelph before landing a 10-year stint at rival school RCI from 1982-1992. In 1992, Ball returned home to teach physical education with his mentor Wayne Oattes. “Stan’s strength as an educator and department head was his willingness to lead by example,” said Moore. “He was great at volunteering to help where needed and was exceptionally good at motivating kids to reach their potential and at recruiting kids to give something a try.” Moore praised Ball’s hard work over the years and said he counts him as a friend. “Stan’s philosophy about teaching phys. ed. was not to confuse them and make it fun to be active and healthy. I especially liked hearing the kids repeat Stan’s five rules: one - show up, two - show up on time, three - show up prepared, four - don’t talk when he is talking and five - don’t die.”

He wondered about the bright future of the sports program, which might one day include new tennis courts or a rowing club that practices at the head pond. “Anything is possible because this is a program that runs on tradition,” said Ball. ADHS has had the support of the community for 135 years, said Ball, as well from countless administrators, staff and parents. Their time, resources and energy are appreciated, he said. “And the most important thing – the athletes – who have always been there to put the play into Redmen pride,” he said. Ball outlined some of the things he will not miss as he prepares to retire, including bus rides from Madawaska Valley in a snowstorm and ignorant fans. “I will not miss cutting kids whose hearts are bigger than their abilities,” he said. He said he will miss Oattes Field, with its blue sky and pine trees. “What an inspirational place to play,” he said. “I will miss the infinite possibilities that exist just before the opening kickoff, jump ball or the crack of the starter pistol. He encouraged potential future coaches to get involved. “Grab a whistle and make the tradition continue,” he said. “Thanks for the memories.” See next week’s ChronicleGuide for the full awards listing.

ALWAYS A REDMAN STAN BALL TRIBUTE

ADHS athletic director Phil Moore presents retiree Stan Ball with a Richard Gill clay relief sculpture depicting Ball’s time as a football coach.

The evening also included the presentation of a lifetime achievement award to retiring teacher and coach Stan Ball, who received a Richard Gill clay relief sculpture, much praise and some ribbing in a special tribute. Ball, whose father was a science teacher and coach at ADHS for more than 30 years, had an impressive sports career while he was a student from 1970-1976. Ball graduated from Queens University and worked for a

Ball said his love of ADHS never wavered. “Once a Redman, always a Redman,” he said. He told the crowd that a picture of exists of him at six months old, taken in November 1956, in a baby carriage alongside the old football field at ADHS, where his father was coaching football. During his career, Ball said, there have been two different football fields, the track has been resurfaced three times, there have been four floors on the McEwan gym and the weight room has been in five locations.

Special Olympian Greg Murdoch and athletic director Phil Moore share a hug after a presentation to Murdoch recognizing a year of significant accomplishments in and out of the pool.

she confidently moved about the stage. She also received huge applause from the crowd. So did Helferty, who sang Tomorrow to the guitar accompaniment of brother Stephen and on-stage band members. In the audience were five siblings and parents Joan and L.J. “I’m really excited, I’m so excited,” said her mom. “It’s unbelievable.” Daughter Emily, speaking calmly after her exciting win, figured she had a good chance to win because her song had a positive, uplifting, happy and age-appropriate message. So what’s all this fuss about the Renfrew County Idol at Expo 150? An estimated 600 or 700 spectators learned what as the overflow crowd at Stage 1 was treated to head-turning performances Friday evening. The first of two nights of Idol finals was reserved for the youth (13 and under) and teen (14-18) categories, as spectators, including the media, came away shaking their heads at the wide range and high quality of the performers. When all 15 finalists were done, Emily Helferty, 12, of Douglas and Dominic Grandmaison, 18, of Calabogie were declared victorious by the panel of Kevin Nieman, Colleen Fleming and Maureen Belland. It seemed evident that top youth honours were up for grabs between Helferty, who sang Tomorrow, the same song she’d sung in a musical the week before, and Keelin Dowdall of Renfrew, who really connected with the crowd with her version of The Winner Takes It All. Perhaps in the running was the youngest entrant, six-year-old Kurt Zhou of Deep River, who sang a Chinese love song, Ao Bao. He did so after announcing, to the audience’s laughter, that other than singing he most loved to eat, do math and play video games. Dowdall, the 12-year-old daughter of Jeannie Armstrong and Paul Dowdall, was wearing a black and green dress as

Dominic Grandmaison of Calabogie won the teen category Friday. Grandmaison qualified for the contest at the Arnprior competition.

Idols reunite at Valley Voices for CHEO concert Continued from Page 27 “Every single time I perform I get a little bit nervous,” she admitted. But she also carries with her the same attitude of ‘whatever happens, just do your best’. “I think I sang pretty well,” she said, when asked to assess her performance. “I don’t think there’s much I could have done better.” She also acknowledged the great variety and quality of her competitors and hoped everyone came away concluding about all the finalists that “we have talent.” The evening’s emcee was MPP John Yakabuski who, like many members of the crowd, expressed admiration for the quality of the performances. The quality was awarded with quality prizes for the two winners. No runnersup or other placings were determined, as Helferty came away with an Ipod, $500 in cash, and $500 for the arts program at her St. Michael’s Catholic School. The other contests in the youth group were Brian-

TEEN WINNER Unfortunately for those attending the June 26 Valley Voices CHEO fundraiser in Renfrew, Dominic Grandmaison of Calabogie will not be present. He’ll be out of the county, in the Dominican Republic, for a previous commitment.

But spectators at Idol will long remember his performance, as the tenor performed the Italian opera love song, Caro Mi Ben. Emcee Yakabuski admitted he didn’t understand a word, but didn’t need to, to appreciate the performance. Another appreciative spectator was Grandmaison’s long-time singing instructor, Sister Joan Pecore of Renfrew who also joined the stage band, to play keyboard, during the teenager’s performance. “He’s got an absolutely beautiful tenor voice, and he sings with sincerity,” said Sister Pecore, who provides lessons for Grandmaison out of St. Thomas the Apostle School in Renfrew. “He sings with joy.” As the winner said, “I love to perform like this. I just like to see smiles on people’s faces.” Grandmaison, who’ll study music at University of Ottawa next fall, performed as parents Sylvia and Bob, brother Olivia and sister Renée looked on.

SHERRY HAAIMA Sherry.haaima@metroland.com

Erin Coleman of Eganville is the adult division winner of Renfrew County Idol. She won the contest held Saturday evening – a well-attended show despite sporadic showers – with her spirited rendition of Carrie Underwood’s Before He Cheats. The timing of the win couldn’t have been more perfect for Coleman. “My TV just blew up on Monday,” she said. She planned to use the $1,000 cash to pay off her wedding dress in advance of her October wedding. She was enjoying the limelight. “I feel like I’m on American Idol,” said a laughing Coleman, who said she’s been singing since the age of two. “This is an amazing feeling, having all my friends and family here.” The competition was not without its poignant moments. Ian Maika of Douglas delivered a heartfelt version of Unanswered Prayer in the wake of his father Ambrose’s May 28 sudden death in an ATV accident. Proud supporter of:

Darren Caldwell of Renfrew dedicated his song, Hero of War, to the troops. Laura Caldwell-St.Michael, who watched from in front of the stage with tears in her eyes, said her son’s choice of song was fitting, considering the event was located so close to CFB Petawawa and the military was a big part of the Expo. “He sang from his heart. I’m just so proud of him, he’s so talented,” she said. Darren started playing guitar and singing at the age of 13 and she was thrilled to watch him perform. Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MPP John Yakabuski emceed the event. He praised the evening’s 15 competitors. “It takes more than talent to get up on a stage like this,” said Yakabuski. “It takes a lot of guts to get up here.” Sweet had praise for the emcee. “There are not too many MPPs who would do what you have just done for us,” he told Yakabuski. “I know you talk very fondly about your dad, but you’re also a credit to the Yakabuski family. Thanks for being a very special part of Renfrew County Expo 150.”

ADHS student’s woodwork displayed to school board Arnprior District High School student Eric Dykens has won high praise for his woodworking expertise. Dykens’ works, two award-winning end tables, were in the spotlight at the April 26 Renfrew County District School Board meeting. They were among a number of creations shown to the board by teacher Terry Hoelke, who touted them as an example of the success of the board’s techno-

logical program. The tables made by the Grade 12 student won a Wood Objects Competition at Lansdowne Park. Dykens was awarded a plaque and $150 worth of wood. Dykens is proud of the tables, noting they are made out of black walnut and purple heart accent mortise and tenon joinery. “I choose walnut and purple heart because they had enough contrast to stand out from each other, but not too much

to be out of place,” he explained. His next project involve sofa tables made of cherry wood with ebony inlays and spindles. He is hoping to become an apprentice to help him on the way to a career in cabinet furniture making.

School board names new superintendent A former principal of St. Joseph’s High School has been chosen as the Renfrew County Catholic District School Board’s new superintendent of educational services, effective Sept. 1. Because of expanded responsibilities for the superintendent’s position, Peter Adam becomes the board’s second superintendent. Already on staff is superintendent Jaimie Perry, another former St. Joseph’s principal. Adam has worked as both a teacher and principal in the Catholic education system for 29 years, 22 of those at schools in Renfrew County. From October 2010 to January 2011, he served as assistant to the board’s director of education. “Peter has shown himself to be a model of personal and professional commitment to Catholic education,” said board chair Bob Schreader. “Among several excellent internal candidates, he stood out as having the right combination of knowledge, vision and commitment to be an effective supervisory officer in our Catholic board.” “In recent months, Peter has worked on several important initiatives as assistant to the director of education,” said director of education Michele Arbour. “He has been involved in the Student Re-engagement Initiative, the RCCDSB Enrolment and Retention Strategy, and the RCCDSB Leadership Development Strategy. He has proven himself, in all of these tasks – as well as in his roles as teacher and principal over the years – to be a powerful leader and committed servant to the Catholic education system.” After graduating from high school in Pembroke in 1975, Adam went on to earn his Bachelor of Arts degree at Carleton Univer-

sity, and his Bachelor and Master of Education degrees at the University of Ottawa. He taught in Ottawa’s Catholic school board from 1982 to 1989 and then returned to Pembroke to teach at Bishop Smith Catholic High School. From 1997 to 2001, he was principal of St. Joseph’s High School in Renfrew and since 2001, he has been principal at Bishop Smith. “I look forward to this challenge,” Adam said after the announcement. “We have clear goals as Catholic educators. In my role as superintendent of educational services, I am committed to leading and supporting my colleagues to provide all of our students with ongoing faith development and academic achievement.” 613-433-6569 OFFICE 613-623-7922 DIRECT

Arnprior Mayor David Reid with one of the many Summerpalooza teams that came to Town Hall. staff and other tasks not to be mentioned at this time. The event is organized by the high school’s business management Grade 12 class as an exercise on how to be a successful entrepreneur. Each student pays $10 with a portion of the proceeds given to a local charity (this

year Relay for Life). At times Arnprior town staff felt a little overwhelmed as more than 250 students waited in the upstairs hallway to enter council chambers and complete a specific task. What was Mayor David Reid’s response to this impromptu student invasion? With

eyes beaming and a huge smile on his face, the mayor said: “This is absolutely great! I love seeing students visit at the town hall, learn something about council and municipal services and then continue to other areas in the town. They’re having a lot of fun while learning and it’s just wonderful!” For Arnprior staff, the additional chatter and laughter meant a little adjustment, but town clerk Jacquie Farrow-Lawrence noted, “overall, the students were great and we would love to have them back next year.” So, a huge congratulations to all the students and all the best for their 2011 Summerpalooza event.

The scene at the town hall took on a different atmosphere on the morning of Friday, June 3, starting at about 8:45 a.m. as students from Arnprior District High School invaded council chambers in their quest to win The Amazing Race component for their 2011 Summerpalooza event. The clue guiding students to town hall was: “Where decisions are made and parking tickets are paid,” and they had no problem finding where to go. Teams of four students each took turns entering council chambers. Once inside, each team was told what their specific task was at Town Hall, such as finding out who are the councillors, who are the

steve.newman@metroland.com

As author and storyteller Mary Cook spoke from the lectern at the Burnstown United Church, the audience of nearly 40 people enjoyed the journey − namely Cook’s recollections of life growing up during the Depression in Northcote, just outside the Town of Renfrew. Cook has written 11 books, but she says her 12th, which she is working on and hoping for a publication date in early 2012 with General Store Publishing House, may be the most difficult to write. It’s about the 1940s and the time when she says her alcoholic father’s life started to go south and her mother’s life took a turn for the better. But the focus of her talk May 28 was the Depression, along with anecdotes and comparisons with modern-day society. Her talk was part of a fundraising day for the Burnstown United Church’s talk and ensuing Celtic tea, prepared by Mary Campbell of Glendochart Farm of McNab-Braeside. The parish also held, earlier in the day, a silent auction, a luncheon, and its annual plant and bake sale. Cook’s topics included her sliver of a connection with wealth and Aunt Lizzy of Regina; lessons learned at home and at school; memories of her four siblings, including brother Emerson who came into the world at 14 pounds, 11½ ounces; and the importance of family. The Depression was not an easy time, with no electricity or running water, but it was home for many profound lessons, said Cook. She recalled how her Aunt Lizzy, who was married to a railway employee, got to travel across the country without concern for costs. During one of those visits,

Jack & Faith’s

Author Mary Cook Aunt Lizzy quietly put a quarter in Mary’s hand. For a five-yearold, this first-time experience was exciting. But Mary’s mother asked for the quarter, explaining it was needed to pay for coal oil for the lamps. She also reflected on age-old issues, such as marriage and honesty. Cook, who celebrated her 59th anniversary June 7, said of marriage: “It’s not something you can put on a shelf and hope it works.” Later, Cook spoke from the diaries her mother passed on. Mary and her siblings called them Mommilees that were really about life and how to live it. Having said that, Cook read this excerpt: “It is not how much money you accumulate in your lifetime, but what you do with it. It’s not how much you achieve academically, but how you have educated yourself in your lifetime. “It’s not important if you have rubbed shoulders with kings, but how you have related to the common man. It’s not important if you stand physically tall, only that you achieve spiritual height.

Rail line key to economic revival in riding: NDP what jobs and growth can we count on here in the Ottawa Valley? What funds or government initiatives will help the struggling industries here, like forestry, agriculture, tourism and manufacturing?” Burton said that at a time when gas prices are going through the roof, CP Rail is about to begin dismantling the rail bed through the Ottawa Valley. In doing so, it will remove a sustainable transportation alternative, he pointed out.

“The loss of transportation infrastructure would be a devastating blow to the local economy including forestry, agriculture, military, manufacturing and tourism. Without access to rail, it will become increasingly difficult for Valley businesses to compete, and harder for local communities to attract jobs and growth.” Burton said that instead of ensuring Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke is a cost-effective and well-connected place to live, visit and do business, Gallant is

“letting us fall right off the map.” New Democrats in Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke recommend the federal government provide leadership in saving the CP Rail line, as the first practical step to supporting the local economy, now and for the future, Burton said. “If Mrs. Gallant really wants to support jobs and growth in Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke, she should be building transportation infrastructure, not ripping it up. It is time to put key messages aside and start delivering the goods.”

BOOT DRIVE FOR DIABETES Team Diabetes member Amy D’Aoust reports her Friday morning/afternoon boot drive May 20 was a huge success. “Thanks to the generous residents of Arnprior (and beyond), we raised $2,800 for the Canadian Diabetes Association,” she said. “I’m completely floored by the generosity and words of support we received throughout the day.” Among the contributions in her boot was a wedding band (probably a man’s). Above, D’Aoust with her boot at the corner of Division and Elgin streets.
