Soprano Jennifer Slight, left photo, will be one of several guest performers at the May 1 concert. Arnprior mezzo soprano Lisa Webber is playing a lead role in organizing and performing at the concert.
Choir’s concert fit for king (and queen) As the world awaits with much anticipation the spring Royal Wedding, the Arnprior Community Choir prepares a Britishtype celebration of its own. On Sunday evening, May 1 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Peter Celestine Church in Pakenham, the choir will present ‘Come Ye Sons of Art’ by Henry Purcell. Purcell was a prolific British composer who dedicated this work as a Birthday Ode to Queen Mary in 1694. The work contains ‘Sound the Trumpet’, the famous soprano/ alto duet; ‘Strike the Viol’ for alto soloist and flute; and ‘Bid the Virtues’ for soprano and oboe obligato. The chorus work is accompanied by soaring trumpets, strings and chamber orchestra. The evening will feature many fine musicians led by guest conductor Jiri Hlavacek. Since 1991, the Arnprior Community Choir has promoted and supported young local musicians as they
establish their musical careers. Fittingly, joining the orchestra are several young violinists from the Almonte studio of Suzanne Snelling. As well, Renfrew soprano, Jennifer Slight will be accompanied by renowned oboist, David Sale, who now resides in Pakenham. Almonte-based cellist, Steven Smith will perform solo’s with Lisa Webber, as well as provide bass continuo for the Purcell. Joining the string section are several members from the Divertimento Orchestra of Ottawa, one being local violist, Nancy Illman. The community choir is so pleased to present an evening of music such as this, collaborating with fine musicians from the local area, using this very beautiful church in Pakenham and preparing music of this calibre to celebrate 20 years. Tickets are available at the Arnprior Book Shop or from choir members.
