More than 20 kids took part in the event. This week there are two more egg hunts in Arnprior, both on Saturday, March 31. The first is at Glad Tidings Church at 116 Baskin Dr. starting at 10 a.m. and the second will take place at the Arnprior Public Library with over 1,000 paper eggs hidden that kids can redeem for chocolate treats. Doors open at 10 a.m. and the event ends when all the hidden eggs have been found.

Forget all your troubles, forget all your cares and go downtown. That was the feeling for Arnprior council on March 26 as they voted 5-2, in a recorded vote, in favour of Meehan Street as the location for the new Sens Rink. Since the start of discussions in December, town staff had recommended Nick Smith Centre (NSC) as the preferred location. The results of a recent survey were also presented to council with 42.6 per cent in favour of the Meehan Street location, 39.6 per cent wanting NSC and 17.8 per cent voting not to proceed with the project. A total of 434 votes were received. A number of councillors spoke in favour of the downtown location, saying it is more than just a rink and will be a meeting place for the community in the centre of town. “This is an opportunity to transform, basically what is a brown field site into something in the middle of town that the entire town can use,” said Mayor David Reid, who had yet to speak on the issue as he was away when it first came to council. “The reality is we are not going to leave that site barren. This is the seed to start that transformation and I think it is the perfect fit.” Councillors Lynn Grinstead and Tom Burnette both voted against the downtown location, instead advocating for the rinks to be together. Both support the project in principle. The town still has to get the final approval from the County of Renfrew, which owns the land on Meehan Street. However ,Reeve Walter Stack indicated the response would be favourable for that location. The project is a joint partnership with the Sens Foundation, the Arnprior Optimist Club (who is now gearing up to fundraise $400,000 for the rink) and M.Sullivan & Sons Ltd.

An Arnprior man has received one year’s probation for killing a snapping turtle. Brandon Ekholm pleaded guilty to hunting a snapping turtle during the closed season, says a Ministry of Natural Resources press release. In addition to probation, he was ordered to pay $1,000 to the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre near Peterborough and to perform 60 hours of community service. Court heard that on June 8, 2017, Ekholm caused an injury to a snapping turtle that was on the side of a road in the Calabogie area. A Pembroke conservation officer received a call from a member of the public reporting a snapping turtle with a severe injury near Calabogie Lake. An investigation revealed that the turtle was taken by a concerned member of the public to the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre. While it was treated, it ultimately succumbed to its injuries. The case was solved with the assistance of the Calabogie community. At the time of the discovery, Metroland Media reported on the case and issued a call to the public for information. Justice of the Peace Julie Lauzon heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Pembroke, on March 19, 2018. The ministry reminds the public that the hunting of snapping turtles in Ontario was

Arnprior has the highest child poverty rate in all of Renfrew County, according to the last census. Relief is on its way following a funding announcement for a new three-year project aimed at helping single parent families living in poverty More than $700,000 in funding from the provincial government is coming to those who need it the most. On March 16 the Child Poverty Action Network (CPAN) and Mackay Manor revealed two major funding announcements. CPAN, which is hosted by the Phoenix Centre, is receiving $381,000 from the Government of Ontario’s Local Poverty Reduction Fund (LPRF). It will fund the 360 Project, which will help single parent families with support, navigation and resources in Arnprior, Renfrew and Pembroke. “One in five children live in poverty, and 35 per cent of those families that are in poverty are lead by single mothers. When you don’t have another parent you don’t have someone to bounce things off, or do groceries, you only have one income running the home,” said Lyn Smith, executive director at CPAN. “It’s difficult, this is why we started the 360 Project, when people live in poverty we all lose.”

On March 16, local dignitaries gathered for two major funding announcements were made for the Child Poverty Action Network and Mackay Manor. On hand for the announcement are: Mayor Michael LeMay, Mayor Don Eady, Tom Carroll, Lyn Smith, Warden Jennifer Murphy, Reeve Walter Stack and MPP John Yakabuski. The project will consist of two pieces: an intake session to find out how they can help utilizing other resources and the second social gatherings so they can network and work together. “We will help people to help themselves, it is not a handout, it’s a hand up,” said Smith. “It will be an excit-
ing three years in three different municipalities and I hope it’s just a beginning.” The LPRF is also funding Mackay Manor’s 50 Free Women Project with a $364,700 grant. The program will support single parents by delivering deep healing therapy to heal them
from tobacco addiction. “Once again Renfrew County leads the way in groundbreaking therapy and treatment for people. Everything starts here and then spreads,” said Tom Carroll, executive director at Mackay Manor. “It’s heartwarming to finally have a Ministry of Health
that recognizes the treatment of tobacco is worth the investment and it is just trickling out at the moment and they need a lot more … if we can treat that, we can save so many lives, we are on the right track. We are really happy to receive this funding to treat single parents out of poverty as most of them spend 30 per cent of their income on tobacco.” Renfrew Mayor Don Eady said it was an important day. “I think this is a huge, huge step in the right direction. The Town of Renfrew has one of the lowest incomes per capita of any places in Ontario,” said Eady. “These types of program will open doors for a lot of people to move forward with their lives.” Arnprior Reeve Walter Stack called it exciting news, which he hopes will improve lives in the community. “Hopefully it will be a significant opportunity,” said Stack. He also noted council was surprised that as per the 2011 census Arnprior had the highest child poverty rate in all of Renfrew County and the town is currently forming a committee, which he hopes will work closely with CPAN to make a difference. “This money will be a real opportunity for us to work with CPAN and maybe have some impact with the families,” said Stack. “It is great news.”

An important partner at Arnprior District Memorial Hospital has moved back in following extensive renovations. Since 2004, Dynacare Laboratory and Health Care Services Centre has operated in the Arnprior District Memorial Hospital (ADMH) basement. Relieving the outpatients department, the private company offers blood analysis services in an admittedly cramped space of just 400 square feet. Often patients in waiting were hit by the opening door. “It was very small and included two collection chairs,” said Diane Paradis, Dynacare regional manager. “The patient volumes were steadily increasing over the years and we extended business hours and added staff.” Volume went from 20 patients a day to 130 last year. However, it became obvious that more space was needed. With Dr. Cathy Greenough moving upstairs to the new physician offices, Dynacare could expand to 1,900 square feet with four collection chairs, a lie down room, patient washroom, and staff kitchen. “We have wonderful services for our customers and decided it was time to expand our space and provide a state-of-the-art location in order to deliver the best possible experience for all our customers,” Paradis said. An official grand opening and ribbon cutting with Deputy Mayor Frank Dugal was held
Monday, March 19. For about six weeks while construction was underway, the staff of Sharon Eady-Cox, Brenda Albert, and Connie Hunter worked out of Kenwood Centre. Dynacare’s catchment area includes Almonte, Carp, Dunrobin, Pakenham, Calabogie, White Lake, and Braeside.

In his response to a rally decrying staff shortages held March 20 outside of Arnprior Regional Health (ARH), CEO Eric Hanna said patients can feel confident they are going to receive good quality care at the hospital. On hand at the rally were representatives from the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), Ontario Public Service Employees Union, Ontario Council of Hospital Union and the Ontario Nurses Association. At issue, say the unions, are staffing shortages and patient care levels at the hospital and the Grove Nursing Home. Hanna addressed the rally in a memo to staff and in media interviews. Protestors alluded to three full-time registered nurse positions that had been cut. “More than a year ago three fulltime ONA positions were deleted from the schedule,” said Hanna in his staff memo. “These positions had been vacant in the schedule for several years. While continuously reviewing occupancy and staffing needs, it was determined that these nursing positions were not required in order to provide the staffing pattern required to care for our patients.” “What is important to note,” said

Hanna, “is there were no layoffs.” There was also no union grievance filed, he said. Hanna said union claims that six new part-time positions were added since the hospital was served notice of the rally simply are not true. Eight new nurses have been recruited in a process that began in January, he said. “And of those nurses we’ve hired since Jan. 1, there are several fulltime,” noted Hanna. He explains nurses on the in-patient

be available and that puts strain on existing nurses.” In terms of supports for staff, he said there is an employee assistance program available free of charge. Also, he maintains an open-door policy and wants to hear from staff about their concerns. He wants to reassure patients that
high-quality care is available at ARH. Statistics including a decrease in hospital-acquired infections, decreasing readmission rates and high hand hygiene compliance point to the quality of care, said Hanna. There also has not been one in-patient outbreak, he said. “To me those are quality of care issues,” he said, adding, “I’m not suggesting everything is perfect but those things show our quality of care continues to improve thanks to the dedication of our staff.” Accessing funding is not the only challenge the hospital is facing, noted the CEO. Being a smaller, rural hospital means ARH can’t offer the same options to potential nurses and other staff. Hanna said he respects the rights of the unions and staff members to rally and hopes all parties involved can work together to make improvements. “We need everyone to work together on finding solutions and make sure we have those structures in place to bring concerns forward,” said Hanna. “Let’s sit down and find a way to fix them together.” Things like the patient family advisory council and occupational health and safety council help that process, he added. Rallies like this should not happen. Safe staffing levels are the first things we think about!” Patrick Garbutt, president of CUPE 2198 at ARH and also speaking on behalf of CUPE front line staff of Grove Nursing Home, said it is a very challenging time for the hospital as the significant shortages are affecting care. “We are here because we care about our patients and they need help,” said Garbutt. “Ontario funds its hospitals at the lowest level of any province and our patients are getting caught in the crosshairs.” Garbutt said they need help on the front lines and the shortages hurt a number of people. “Regardless of what hospitals/nursing homes
say, eliminating staff hurts direct patients’ care,” said Garbutt. “It also hurts the front-line staff remaining with crushing workloads, increased stress, and low morale because staff just can’t keep up.” Garbutt said others might have a different opinion but “All is not well here, we want people in our community to know we are worried about patients and their care level because there are not enough staff,” said Garbutt. “We will have no more of this hospital administration pretending all is well, all is not well.” The crowd responded with loud chants of “Shame!” Garbutt noted that since they served the hospital notice to rally on Feb. 9 six new part-time positions have been added, a claim refuted by the hospital. Arnprior Regional Health CEO Eric Hanna responded to the rally, see story on page 6.
About 40 health care staff/supporters made their voices heard loud and clear as they chanted “Cuts don’t heal” and waved flags and signs in front of Arnprior Regional Health on March 20. Representatives from the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), Ontario Public Service Employees Union, Ontario Council of Hospital Union and the Ontario Nurses Association (ONA) marched and voiced their concerns about low staffing and patient care levels at the hospital and the long-term care home. Funds must filter down We agree with the Ontario Nursing Association’s (ONA) assertion that the 4.6-percent increase in hospital funding recently announced by the provincial government is good news for patients, but only if the government ensures that the funds filter down to patient care at the bedside and alleviate overcrowding and hallway nursing. And while 4.6 per cent sounds good from the outset, it looks like the actual number for small hospitals may be less than half that. Health care is clearly in crisis. Long wait times, a shortage of nurses and other support staff, and lack of beds are among the varied and critical issues that need to be addressed. The union is right to advocate for staff and patients alike. Ontario has the lowest registered nurse(RN)-to-population ratio in the country and a large body of research has shown that more RN care reduces patient morbidity and mortality rates. Funds must indeed be directed where needed most - to patient care at the bedside. “Front-line registered nurses and health-care professionals know that our hospitals are severely understaffed,” said ONA president Vicki McKenna, RN. “This funding is an opportunity to improve the quality of care our patients need and deserve.” Nurses and their support staff peers are fundamental to quality health care in the province. Let’s give them the tools and support needed to continue to care for us when we need it most.
Ontario PC Party in need of sex education To the editor: During the recent leadership contest of the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party, the sexeducation curriculum hysteria raised its ugly head yet again. In one debate the then leadership contestant Tanya Granic Allen notoriously claimed that children are being taught about “anal sex” in school. (Apparently none of those actually teaching the curriculum noticed this.) And since election as PC Leader, Doug Ford has reaffirmed his commitment to repealing the new curriculum introduced in 2015. Enough ink has already been spilled attempting to cool the hot air of this conservative culture war. What is a new observation, however, is the irony of this rebirth of the sex ed excitement

in the wake of the scandals surrounding former PC Leader Patrick Brown. Brown was pressured to resign under pressure from his caucus (including MPP John Yakabuski) after news stories revealed Brown’s domineering sexual posture towards younger female staffers. His behaviour towards his female employees was so systemic that his own advisers discussed their fears of a potential public scandal as long ago as 2015. Suffice to say that the PC Party was recently forced into chaos by the scandal of a leader encroaching upon women without clear consent, and now this same party is protesting a curriculum that teaches children about the need for respecting bodily autonomy and consent-based behaviour.
Speaking of respect for women, it is sad that two reputable women, more especially the eminently-qualified Christine Elliot who had patiently made her third leadership run, both lost to a macho-male patriarch for the PC leadership. (Elliot lost the leadership even after winning more members’ votes and seats than Doug Ford!) Does anyone expect an educated understanding of consentbased behaviour from a man known for personal attacks on rivals? Speaking of Ford, in his leadership campaign he expressed off-the-cuff support for granting parents a veto over potential abortions by their adolescent daughters. One might imagine that the parents most likely to use such a veto would tend to be
the same parents least comfortable with educating their children about safe sexuality. And those not educated about safe sexuality are the most likely to conceive at too young an age... Apparently the “Progressive” Conservatives have not learned the right lessons from the longstanding lack of sex education that has afflicted their leadership. So long as that remains the case, they cannot be trusted with having the power to limit the sex education available to the rest of Ontario. The number of patients being admitted remains steady, but the care they need varies. To address this, we continually review our staffing patterns to ensure the best care. Earlier this year, we hired eight new nurses. Our focus on quality also looks at hand hygiene and infection results - and both have improved this year.
ARH is working with community partners on a Rural Health Hub. We want to create a healthier community where we all work together to improve access to care and support. Patients are a key part of the planning process. This year, we focused on improving the experience for patients with COPD and Diabetes.

BETTER SPACE
We are recruiting new physicians at ARH. This month, we welcomed a neurologist and an ear, nose and throat specialist to our team. And we are providing more care via telemedicine so you don’t have to drive to the city to see a specialist.
Up to 20 specialists come to Arnprior each month to see patients in our outpatient clinics. We are renovating to make it easier to find your way around and we’re even reducing the time it takes to register when you arrive. We are also adding two accessible washrooms.
BEST PRACTICES Our team is committed to ongoing learning. For example, our Personal Support Workers have specialized training in assisted living services and now care for some patients right in their own homes. Courses focus on preventing falls, and caring for clients who have had a stroke or have Parkinson’s disease.
HIGH TECH. HIGH TOUCH. ARH is working with other hospitals in the region to enhance the electronic health record for every patient. The newest module will allow nurses to verify medications right at the bedside using bar code technology. This will reduce possible medication errors.

A request for prequalification (RFPQ) for the Grove Long-Term Care Redevelopment Project was released last week. This process asks interested contractors to confirm their experience and capacity in related construction projects. The RFPQ invited contractors to share their interest in three potential areas: smaller miscellaneous projects at Arnprior Regional Health; the renovation of the Central Sterile Reprocessing (CSR) at Arnprior District Memorial Hospital (ADMH); and the Grove redevelopment. “This is a significant milestone and the next major step in the redevelopment
process at both the Grove and ADMH,” explains Eric Hanna, president and CEO. “It’s exciting to see these projects move forward.” In August 2017, Premier Wynne announced funding to expand the Grove from 60 to 96 beds. The new space will also include a community health hub to deliver services for seniors in the community. The construction project at ADMH includes renovations to CSR, a key hospital department responsible for the cleaning, disinfecting and sterilizing of medical devices and equipment. These redevelopment programs will result in more than $30 million in facility upgrades at Arnprior Regional Health over the next 30 months.

Driver charged with failing to yield to school bus with lights flashing A tragedy was narrowly avoided when a driver failed to yield to a school bus with lights flashing unloading children in Arnprior, says a press release from the Renfrew detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police. Witnesses reported on Thursday, March 22 at approximately 2:53 p.m. on Division Street in Arnprior a school bus was stopped, lights activated and the stop arm out unloading children when a male driver proceeded through the lights and almost struck a parent. The male driver then started to reverse his vehicle almost striking several children crossing the road. He then drove off. Following an investigation into the matter, Const. Denys Baranovskiy identified the male driver as an 88-year-old male from Arnprior and issued him a provincial offence notice for failing to stop for the school bus when lights activated. Road rage Officers from the Renfrew detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a dispute that brought traffic to a halt on Raglan Street South in Renfrew on Tuesday, March 20 at approximately 11:15 a.m. The investigation revealed one driver cut another off
at the intersection of Raglan and Hall Avenue. The lead driver then stopped their vehicle on the roadway and a dispute between two drivers erupted. A 37-year-old Renfrew man was charged with failing to yield to traffic on a through highway, and unnecessary slow driving, under the Highway Traffic Act. One vehicle was towed from the scene. Const. Lindsey Moore led the investigation. RIDE Spot Checks Police are looking for assistance from the public in identifying a driver who stopped briefly at a RIDE spot check and then fled the scene. On Saturday, March 24 at approximately 9:15 p.m. police were conducting a RIDE program on Bruce Street at Maloney Road in Renfrew. A male driver in a four-door black Pontiac Grand Am or G6 briefly stopped, and then drove off when directly to pull off the road by the police. Open alcohol was seen in the vehicle. Patrols were conducted but officers were unable to locate the vehicle. If you have information on this vehicle or driver please call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. Domestic violence Arnprior and Renfrew officers investigated three domestic disputes during the past week. One female was charged with assault. No other criminal offences were alleged. Impaired driver On Tuesday, March 20 at approximately 5 p.m. Const. Kayla Couture stopped a vehicle in Arnprior for a traffic offence. The male driver had been drinking and failed a roadside alcohol screening test. Following further breath tests at the detachment a 62-year-old male of McNab/Braeside Township was charged with impaired driving, and driving over 80 mgs. He was released on a promise to appear in court in
Renfrew on April 18. March and April bring tax scams Scammers are very busy this time of year with tax related scams intended to frighten victims and trick you into sending them money. Fraudsters will claim they are calling from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and that either you owe them taxes, or that a refund is due. Their preferred payment form for taxes owed is in iTunes cards, so that is your first clue that something is not right. The CRA would never call you, they always correspond by mail, and secondly they do not accept payments in the form of iTunes cards. They will also claim you may be arrested immediately if you don’t pay today. The police in Canada would never arrest you for not paying taxes. Should the scammers be telling you a refund is owed, they are trying to get your banking information, claiming they will may a deposit. Cadets host fish fry

The expansion and retreating of ice sheets has shaped our world over millions and millions of years. While most of us get that retreating glaciers scoured rocks, cut out valleys
and dropped deposits down-ice in sometimes strange formations, the understanding — for me at least — tends to drop off there. An Arnprior athlete is all set to hit the world stage. Mike Shoveller, a graduate of Arnprior District High School (ADHS), has been selected to be part of the basketball team that will represent Canada at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. The games will be held in Gold Coast, Australia, April 4-15. Shoveller is in his fifth year studying politics at Queen’s University. The 6’11” centre is thrilled to have been chosen for this experience. “It’s a real honour to be selected to represent your country at a unique international level and wear that Canada jersey,” he said. “I was pretty humbled when I got the call.” Shoveller was recruited to play basketball and has enjoyed being part of the university’s team. He missed last year with a torn ACL so was happy to back in action this year. Queen’s lost to Ryerson in the Ontario University Athletics east quarter finals earlier in February. He’s looking ahead to the Commonwealth Games, an experience that began Monday, March 26, with a flight from Ottawa to Vancouver, then another flight to Brisbane – a journey expected to take about

Arnprior District High School graduate Mike Shoveller will play for Canada in the April 4-15 Commonwealth Games. 21 hours. It’s not the first time basketball has taken him on the road. “I’ve been to Argentina and Italy for basketball,” said Shoveller. “This is going to be pretty cool.” He says he owes a lot to the sport.
“Basketball has been a huge passion of mine since I was a little kid. I grew up doing it and fell in love with it,” he said. “And it’s taken me to some pretty cool places and given me some of my best friends.” His experience with postsecondary education has been
extremely positive. “I’ve had the best five years of my life here and basketball gave me the chance to do that,” said Shoveller. He has fond memories of his days at ADHS being coached by Phil Moore. “Playing for Phil gave me a
chance to grow as a player. It taught me a lot about how to be a leader and play with different teammates,” said Shoveller. “Phil always put players first and had our best interests at heart.” Moore is impressed with Shoveller’s success.
“Mike has worked exceptionally hard at all facets of his game, and his fitness and strength training to play at the next level and it has paid off in spades,” he said. “It was neat to see Mike’s name and the Town of Arnprior listed on the roster announcement for Basketball Canada. Way to go Michael!” In terms of his playing style, Shoveller said his height certainly gives him a distinct advantage. “I shoot the ball pretty well, can score inside and out, and on the defensive end, I can protect the rim and protect the paint,” he said. Does he have any advice for young basketball players in the Valley? “You just have to believe in yourself,” he said. “And I’m lucky to have a good support system of family and friends.” Both the men’s and women’s teams will make their Commonwealth Games debut on Friday, April 6 and fans in Canada can catch all the action streaming live online at DAZN. Canada’s men’s team will open the tournament at 3:30 a.m. EST) against Australia at the Cairns Convention Centre. Basketball has only been in the Commonwealth Games program once, at Melbourne 2006 (Canada did not enter teams in the tournament), and Australia won both the men’s and women’s tournaments at those Games.

I look forward to working closely with Mr. Ford as we take our message of accountability and change to the people of Ontario. It is great to have the issue of the leadership race behind us now so that we can concentrate our efforts on the real challenge: defeating Kathleen Wynne and her tired, old, and out-of-touch Liberal government. On Friday, March 19th Kathleen Wynne made a desperate attempt to pull a rabbit out of a hat, hoping she could fool the people one more time. She prorogued the Legislature, so that she could introduce a Throne Speech. A Throne Speech is traditionally used to signal a new beginning, and it is clear that Wynne and the Liberals would like you to believe that they can start all over again. I recently had the opportunity to respond to the Throne Speech and you can watch that response here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOWXzNfBQrc Over the last 15 years while the Liberals have been in office, they have more than doubled the province’s debt, taking spending to record levels, but they have also made life harder for the people of Ontario. Let me remind you of the 300 percent increase in your electricity bills, the endless increases in licencing fees of every nature, and who can forget the health tax? In spite of taking more and more out of people’s pockets, they still have managed to burden this—and future—generations with a debt that would have been hard to imagine only a few short years ago. Servicing the debt is now the third-largest item in the provincial budget— exceeded only by health and education; this at a time when interest rates have enjoyed the longest sustained period at very low levels, but what happens when those rates inevitably go up? It’s not like they haven’t spent money—the Liberals are very good at that—in 2002-2003 government expenditures were $66.5 billion versus a projected $150 billion for the fiscal year of 2018-2019. The problem with Liberals is that they are more interested in simply spending money rather than being concerned with the results. Liberals like to say, “Look at how much we have been able to spend”. I like to say, “Look at what we’ve been able to accomplish by spending your money wisely.” In spite of the fact that they spend money at record levels, the services received by people seems to be fewer and fewer. For example, 34,000 people are currently on a waitlist for a bed in a long-term care home. What’s more, those aging at home are unable to get the care they need. In a budget that will likely be tabled by the time you read this column, it is expected that we will be going even deeper into debt. Wynne and the Liberals have decided that the only way for them to win the election in June is to bribe you with more of your own money. What Liberals fail to realize is that there will always be requests for spending from the electorate: it is the job of government to provide the best-possible services while still acting responsibility and respecting people’s ability to pay—whether it is current or future generations. As you read this we should be in the middle of Holy Week, a very special time for Christians all over the world. I hope that you have some time to reflect on how your faith impacts your life and those around you on a daily basis. It was a “major” announcement, one might say. At a media conference at the Bonnechere Valley municipal office in Eganville on March 20, officials said award-winning singer/songwriter Charlie Major will be making a special local appearance. Major will perform Up Close and Personal in Eganville at the Eagle’s Nest (the village’s community centre), on Saturday, May 12. The outstanding Canadian/Nashville recording star will be giving an intimate solo performance as part of what’s intended to be a daylong fundraiser and overall community celebration. Major is known for many top 10 singles including: Some Day I’m Gonna Ride In A Cadillac, It Can’t Happen To Me, I’m Going To Be Somebody, etc., and as the writer of the mega-smash record Back Roads for Grand Ole Opry star Ricky Van Shelton. The 62-year-old Major was born in Aylmer, Que., and has returned from Nashville recently after several years of virtual non-stop touring to once again reside in the Ottawa area. He’s a Valley boy to be sure and has family up in the Madawaska Valley. He only does select shows these days but easily accepted the proposal to come and play Eganville. The concert is the brainchild of Eganville resident Paul Kilby, who is a big fan of Charlie Major and whose longtime dream has been to see his favourite artist come to Eganville and perform a show there. Last year he asked concert producer Lyle Dillabough (Ottawa Valley Troubadour) if he could arrange such a concert and Dillabough said he would look into it. However, Dillabough suffered a severe illness shortly thereafter and plans were put on the shelf. Now he is on the mend and the project is going ahead. ADCCS joins forces with St. Joseph’s Arnprior Arnprior and District Child Care Services (ADCCS) has been providing quality licensed child care in the community for going on thirty years. They started this journey in 1989 with the first school-based child care program in this area at Alexander Reid Public School. While that school is no longer there, ADCCS is still around; most recently joining forces with St. Joseph’s Catholic School on John Street in town this past September. The School and ADCCS share classroom space each morning and afternoon (outside of school hours) to house Leaps & Bounds Children’s Centre Before & After School Program. This program caters to kindergarten and school-age children attending St. Joseph Catholic School and Walter Zadow Public School. An easy transition for St. Joseph students, and a quick, supervised walk to and from school for those registered at Walter Zadow. That is simply the bones of the operation and being convenient is just the beginning. Staffed by registered early childhood educators with a focus on learning through play, plus operating on days that schools don’t (PA days, March break, summer) gives families some options. McNab/Braeside Township held its first-ever Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, March 24 at the municipal offices with 23 eager kids after chocolate and a movie. Peacefully at the Arnprior and District Memorial Hospital while surrounded by loved ones on Sunday evening, March 18th, 2018; Gordon William Obst of Arnprior passed away at the age of 82. Beloved husband and life partner for over 63 years of Florence “Floss” McLean. Dearly loved father of Dwight (Jane Marie) of Ottawa; Sheila (Greg Guse) of St. Albert, Alberta and Shelley (Richard Neale) of Ottawa; Mark (Lisa) of White Lake. Cherished “Puppa” of Matthew (Christina), Caitlin, Jessica (Connor), Nicholas, Scott, Sarah, Alexa and Ellen and “Great-Grampa” of Colt and another soon to be great-grandson. Dear brother and good friend of Eric Obst (late Lois) and Linda Gardner (Wills) of Kanata. Son of the late William and Olga (nee Greening) Obst, Gord was also predeceased by siblings: Elsie Felhaver (late Martin) and Richard “Dick” Obst (Gail of Renfrew). Fondly remembered as a kind and gentle man who loved life. Gord was an avid hunter and fisherman as well as a great mechanic. He will be lovingly remembered by the many who knew him. Friends called at the Pilon Family Funeral Home and Chapel Ltd., 50 John Street North, Arnprior during visitation on Thursday, March 22nd, from 9 to 10:45. A Funeral Service was conducted in the Pilon Family Chapel on Thursday at 11 o’clock. Cremation followed with interment at Flat Rapids Cemetery, McNab-Braeside later in the Spring. Heather Dale Band in Arnprior April 6 Toronto-based recording artist and touring musician Heather Dale will be performing at the CEC on John Street on April 6 at 8 p.m. As Canadian musicians with their roots in the Ottawa Valley, Heather Dale and Ben Deschamps play lively songs with ancient Irish and Scottish rhythms. Their original contemporary Celtic music “is powerful stuff … with a depth and resonance rooted in its mythic sources” (Vancouver Sun), and draws

To our many parents and volunteers: 2018 is shaping up to be a fantastic year for AMBUSC. This year we are celebrating 40 years of adult soccer in Arnprior. We are also celebrating 30 years of soccer for our youth program. It’s great to think where we started the program and how we are doing today while looking ahead. We have some big challenges ahead of us and we are looking for help to achieve all our goals. We are planning to have two coaches for each kids team and would like to have a team manager, as well as conveners for all age groups. We are offering a 30% rebate for coaches and a 20% rebate for team managers and conveners. We hope this initiative will encourage parents and experienced players to volunteer with AMBUSC. The calendar of events is being finalized, but our Meet the Coach Night for our youth teams and a Season Kick Off tournament for our men’s over 35 teams will happen in early May. Other season highlights include our youth teams attending a tournament in July and AMBUSC hosting the U14 and U16 finals at Dochart Park for the Goulbourn Lanark Soccer League. During the season we will be doing some fundraising for some very big expenditures associated with field development and equipment cost. In the end the success of the club is only achieved with the support of everyone in the club. We have always had great success with your help so I am sure this year will be no different as we celebrate the amazing milestone of 40 years of soccer in our community. Come help us celebrate. Don’t forget, early bird registration pricing ends March 31 prices go up $40 April 1st, but you can register for AMBUSC soccer until April 22. Hand-painted Easter creations MARY COOK Memories
Bracing myself for the usual argument between Mother and Father over Good Friday, I tried to think only of Easter morning and the hunt for my basket of eggs. I knew that Mother had given up many of her Catholic traditions and accepted those Father held as a Lutheran, but when it came to Good Friday, she held fast to refusing to serve meat, which Father thought was the craziest notion he ever heard of. But if he wanted meat, he would have to cook it himself! What would be in the Easter basket was no surprise. It was the looking for it that was exciting. There would be no money for fancy chocolate eggs from Ritza’s Drugstore in Renfrew. For several nights, we sat around the kitchen table with a bowl of hard-boiled eggs in the middle, and our school water colours in front of us. We each painted the eggs in whatever design we could dream up. Of course, Emerson’s were the most elaborate, since he was the only one with any artistic talent in the family. I had to content myself with squiggly lines and dots. But it mattered not. All the painted eggs were put into an 11-quart basket and kept on the bake table until Saturday before Easter Sunday, when they would mysteriously disappear. The same ragged baskets, each with our name written on
the handle, were used year after year, and I could never figure out how the Easter bunny came into the house, took the baskets outdoors, and hid them without my seeing him. We had to get up early on Easter morning, because the chores had to be done, breakfast over, with the kitchen redded up, dressed for church, and then we had to hunt for the baskets, which could be anywhere from the cow byre to the drive shed. The yard had yet to dry up from the winter snow, and so we wore our rubber boots and headed out as soon as we downed our breakfast. Much to my horror, my three brothers and my sister found theirs in jig time, and I was close to tears when my hateful brother Emerson said my basket was likely down in the Bonnechere River, taken there by one of the many foxes which prowled our farm looking to steal a chicken. Mother came out on the back stoop and said she would yell out hot or cold to help me, since she had talked with the Easter bunny, and knew where he had hid every basket. I headed for the drive shed, and she yelled “cold” ... I steered toward the smoke house, and she again yelled “cold.” I started walking back toward the back stoop, and she said “you’re getting warmer ... be careful … you’ll bet burned.” I was right under the maple tree where Father had hung a big rubber tire rescued from someone’s truck, and which we

used as a swing of sorts ... and there I could see the handle of a basket sticking out of the inside of the tire! And it had my name on it! I hadn’t been forgotten after all, and no fox had sneaked into the yard and taken it! The Easter bunny had mixed up all the eggs and there was only one I had painted, much to my delight. There were no chocolate eggs, but somehow the bunny had managed to get some coloured jelly-beans, and the boiled eggs we had painted were sitting on top. But the eggs would go on to another use. Heaven forbid that they would be wasted. After church, they were peeled and mashed and made into egg salad sandwiches for our lunch, which was way up there on my list of favourite meals. Mother would have made cabbage salad, and there would be a platter of cold roast beef and a bowl of preserved cucumber pickles, and a big chocolate cake for dessert. We sat around the table eating like kings, I thought. And I wondered where all those poor people were everyone was talking about.
