Manufacturer secures $1M contract AUCTION SALE derek.dunn@metroland.com

One of Arnprior’s largest employers has bounced back from uncertainty to land a major contract. Pacific Safety Products, a leading North American manufacturer of advanced armour solutions, has been awarded up to a $1-million contract from Public Works and Government Services Canada. The company will supply soft body armour – bullet proof vests - and carrier products to the RCMP. The contract is for the next four years, subject to the number of units actually ordered, and will be manufactured at the company’s Arnprior facility. “This award confirms that PSP remains a trusted supplier to the RCMP of protective armour solutions for law enforcement,” stated Doug Lucky,

CEO. “PSP is uniquely positioned to understand the challenges for ensuring compliance to demanding ballistic and material specifications to guarantee both durability and life saving performance in the field.”

“This is great news for jobs in Arnprior. Jobs are important to the prosperity of the town, so this is a positive news story.” Doug Lucky He added that it will also protect jobs at the 65-person plant. “This is great news for jobs in Arn-

prior,” he said. “Jobs are important to the prosperity of the town, so this is a positive news story.” The company also won a $500,000 contract in June with the Department of National Defence (DND). Lucky said Pacific Safety Products is the “incumbent” maker when it comes to police and DND. However, he’s keen to be supplier to more municipal and provincial forces in Canada. “We’re working to grow principally the domestic markets,” he said. “We are a North American company run out of Arnprior.” However, the company has been under a “forbearance” from a Canadian bank for a few months now. It is set to end Aug. 31. It’s net losses were at $140,687 (0.2 cents per share) in the third quarter. It was at $87,378 (0.3 cents per share) in 2010. Lucky said it is time to move on. “We’re all about the future.”

Eileen Currie, Betty Fox remembered at this year’s run SHERRY HAAIMA sherry.haaima@metroland.com

One of the 2010 Arnprior Terry Fox Run Terry’s Team members, along with Terry’s mother Betty, will be remembered at this year’s event. Coming up on Sunday, Sept. 18, the event is being dedicated to run organizer Rita Cloutier’s sister, Eileen Currie, who lost her battle with cancer earlier this year. Cloutier said she will keep her sister’s memory close as this year’s run rolls around. Even as she battled cancer for the second time, her sister kept up her spirits and brightened the lives of those around her. Betty Fox passed away June 17 and Cloutier said she was saddened to learn of her passing. The long-time local run organizer

EILEEN CURRIE said she had sent a letter to Fox earlier this year and was concerned when she received no response. “Betty was the type to always answer,” she said.

When she learned of the death, she remembered Fox as a strong woman who was a joy to be around. “She certainly could be proud of probably the greatest Canadian hero there ever was,” said Cloutier. Cloutier always felt a special bond with Betty Fox, with her own son born the same year as Terry and getting to know the straight-talking matriarch through her work with the Terry Fox Run and at lunch she hosted for Fox and the community about five years ago. Cloutier encourages everyone to come out and get involved, stressing that there is no distance requirement – even one walk around the track or a small donation will make a difference. The Terry Fox Run starts at 1 p.m. at the Arnprior Fairgrounds. Pledge sheets are available at various local businesses.

Two-year old case a drowning DEREK DUNN Derek.dunn@metroland.com

OPP confirmed that a woman who died two years ago last week was not victim of foul play. Sandra Paulen, 54, was found dead Aug. 24, 2009 in the Ottawa River. Police did not suspect foul play at the time, but waited for post mortem results to confirm it.

The rider pictured in the last week’s Arnprior Chronicle-Guide was neither Patrick Malone nor Bryn Milton. It was actually Shelby MacMillan of Braeside. The member of the McNab Riding School was photographed participating in a JCS Stables clinic. We apologize for this error.

“Her cause of death was consistent with drowning,” Sgt. Kristine Rae said. “It is not a suspicious death. The investigation is complete. Paulen was a cleaner for Donald Banes Cleaning who usually worked at the Keata plant, now Pillar 5. Police explain that when a coroner’s report is not dealing with suspected homicides, delays often take place in producing results.
