Healthy foods creates opportunity for vendor Continued from front He also said there are market pressures outside the school for healthy alternatives – pointing to McDonald’s offering apple slices in Kids’ Meals. Still, when a school like Arnprior’s has a convenience store across the street selling pizzas and pop, Clarke admits students might keep eating less healthy.

“The Gord’s (convenience stores) of the world will continue to find a niche,” he said. “We will not be able to sell that kind of food in our schools. But it’s not a question of competition. It’s a question of education.” While vegetarians insist anyone can eat for less by being creative with beans and other healthy foods, Clarke said it could prove a challenge for rural kids

However, he wonders if it won’t open a niche for a new generation of vendors. “There’s a cultural shift to wraps and salads that might not work right away in Arnprior,” he said. “It maybe will create new opportunities down the road for others that haven’t thought of vending at schools.”
