Welcome to Armstrong! As the newest members of our residential commons, we know you’ve got what it takes to succeed at SMU! Here in Armstrong Commons, we embody the spirit of inquiry, inclusivity, and integrity, and hope you’ll join us by doing so as well. There are so many people here to help you along the way, so I encourage you to meet as many people as possible by getting to know your RAs, floormates, Peer Academic Leaders, Faculty in Residence, Residential Community Director, and Commons Council. Let’s continue supporting each other and fostering a welcoming community that is Second to None! My best advice is to get involved! College is what you make of it, so let’s make it great. Pony up! Welcome to Armstrong Commons!
I am thrilled to welcome you all to Armstrong Commons as your new FiR! This is clearly a unique and challenging time for students and faculty, and there are still many things we don’t know about life at SMU this coming Fall. What I do know is that we will work together to figure it out. I am passionate about creativity, self expression, and encouraging my students to be themselves. I am curious, optimistic and a good listener, and want to help my students connect with what matters to them. My WE ARE ALL HOMELESS project
Wi l l i e B a ro net , y o u r Fa c u l t y -in-Resid en c e ( F iR)
has taught me much about myself, and has informed one of my favorite assignments in Intro to Creativity, the
DESIGN YOUR OWN LEGACY project. My hope is to bring all of me to my FiR role at Armstrong Commons. And Tanya is excited as well. In her key role at the Dallas JDRF, and as a Type 1 Diabetic for over 40 years, I know she is excited to bring her passion for that cause to SMU, and to connect with you to co-create a warm, compassionate space for all of us. Joining us will be our ancient cat Myrna and new kitten, Marcel. According to Myrna, “Willie and Tanya want to bring creativity, inclusivity, curiosity, and cat treats to Armstrong!” The FiR and RCD offices are both in Armstrong Commons with Willie’s office closest to the laundry room side and Lauren’s office closest to the game room side. They both have meetings in various places across campus, so if they’re not in their offices and you need to reach them, their contact information is outside their office doors. You can also Being a college student is a unique period of time in your life. And living through a global pandemic certainly makes it even more unique. In fact, one might say it is, epoch! You may have heard that word connected to our founders, Bill & Liz Armstrong, who met at SMU while studying geology. While the word epoch is often used in geology to refer to a distinctive division in time, we think it applies well to the college experience. We hope during your time in Armstrong and on the Hilltop you will meet and connect with people who are different from

you, you will explore ideas that excite you, and you will travel to new places in the world to live and learn. We are here to serve as your guides along this epoch journey ahead of you and we want to make it Second to None! We are so glad to welcome you to your home under the golden dome.

d o n o r s
Both 1982 SMU graduates, Bill and Liz Armstrong received their B.S. degrees in geology. During their time as students, they lived on campus and participated actively in SMU-in-Taos programs and Greek life. Mrs. Armstrong was in Pi Beta Phi and Mr. Armstrong was in Phi Gamma Delta. Though they met in Geology 101, it was their participation in Fort Burgwin’s geology field camp at SMU in Taos that brought them together as a couple. Their interest in geology and exploration continued past their time at SMU and led to their successful careers in the oil and gas industry and numerous enterpreneurial endeavors. In 1984, the Armstrongs founded Armstrong Oil and Gas, Inc., a national exploration company based in Denver, Colorado, focusing primarily on the North Slope of Alaska. Twenty years later, they establised EPOCH Estate Wines in Paso Robles, California, where, as vintners, they focus on creating ultrapremium Rhone-style wines. In Denver, the Armstrongs have served for the Trustees of the Denver Art Museum, Colorado Ballet, and Central City Opera. Mrs. Armstrong also sits on the Boards of the School of American Ballet (NYC) and Westminster School (CT). They have three children: Lindsey’10, Jack and Leigh ‘11.
o u r
As SMU parents, the Armstrongs chaired the Parent Leadership Council. Mr. Armstrong serves as a member of the Board of Trustees, and Mrs. Armstrong chairs the Executive Board of Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences. In addition to their service, the Armstrongs have demonstrated their support and aspirations for the University through their generosity to SMU-in-Taos, athletics, Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences, student initiatives and other areas across campus. The Armstrongs can be found with their extended family - nine Mustangs over the last four decades - on the Boulevard tailgating each fall. It is with deep gratitude that SMU recognizes their generosity with the naming of Armstrong Commons.

Welcome Armstrongers! We are all so excited for you to be a part of Armstrong! Second to none, we have traditions and events that are important to the Armstrong experience, such as the RC Games, Quiz Bowls, and the annual Armstrong-Crum water balloon fight. Make sure you take some time to get to know our wonderful RCD and FIR, and if you get the chance, introduce yourself to Bill and Liz Armstrong, our donors. They’re always willing to get to know their residents and stay updated on all things under the Cupola. The friendships and relationships you build within the commons is lifelong and the people you meet could become your family. The memories you make around the commons is well worth hanging around the lounges, lobby, or classroom, so we hope to see you at a Commons Council meeting or at an Armstronging! During the fall semester we put on Armstronging, a football tailgating experience the afternoon before each home game, right outside the commons. Come out for grilled hotdogs and hamburgers, music, and games! This is just a small glimpse of all the great things you’ll get to do, get involved, get connected, and have fun (but also work hard). We hope you join the intramurals teams, rep Armstrong, and once again, welcome to Armstrong. Pony Up! Hayeon Bae Armstrong Commons Council Vice President
