Burgundy 2016 Vintage Report

Burgundy has had a series of difficult vintages which has removed the equivalent of the production of an entire vintage over the last five years. Devastating frosts destroyed large swathes of the 2016 crop but the damage was uneven. Some vineyards had normal harvests while other parcels, including several grands crus, were almost wiped out. Conditions were definitely challenging in 2016 but the mood amongst growers was upbeat when we visited this autumn and we were intrigued to find out more. The growing season The year started with a warm winter and a mild spring and growers worried about the early onset of budding and the risk of frost. Devastating frosts struck on the morning of 27th April with temperatures dropping to -2.5 oC, colder still in Marsannay. Unlike previous frosts on lower ground, the most serious damage occurred on the middle part of the slope in some of the best vineyards. The frost magnified the rays of the rising sun which ruptured the frozen buds. The damage was mitigated by initiatives such as burning straw bales and random cloud in other areas but a number of grands crus were badly affected including Musigny, Echézeaux and Montrachet. The damaged vines took several weeks to recover while the unaffected vines continued as normal. As a result growers had to manage vines at different stages of development. Humid conditions in May and June made it difficult to work the soils and increased the risk of mildew especially on vines which had been weakened by frost. The outbreak of mildew which followed struck erratically and much depended on the timing of treatments. Sabine Mollard of Domaine Marc Morey described having “to go constantly back and forth to the vineyards” either to trim or treat the vines. Unwilling to accept any further risks, and having already lost a significant part of their production, a few growers were forced to abandon their organic principles.

armitwines.co.uk/burgundy

The sun broke through at the end of June, putting an end to the mildew pressure, and the rise in temperatures encouraged flowering which started on 20th June, later than normal. Bouchard Père et Fils reported a fairly quick and homogenous flowering but others, such Domaine Fourrier, indicated a high incidence of millerandage. Blain-Gagnard noted a later flowering on frost damaged vines. The weather remained dry and hot throughout July and August which caused localised sunburn and signs of stress on younger vines. Ripening was also slowed but by the beginning of September things looked promising. All that was needed was a little rain to plump up the grapes which is precisely what happened on 17th and 18th of the month. The weather was ideal in the week before the harvest which allowed the grapes to accumulate sugar and flavour compounds quickly while cool overnight temperatures maintained freshness in the grapes. The harvest Most growers started picking from 21st September in bright weather, at least three weeks later than 2015. The harvest continued until the beginning of October when the weather changed but most were finished by then. As ever it was important to select the optimum moment to pick and some sorting was needed to eliminate the second generation bunches but the grapes which entered the winery were generally healthy with small berries and thick skins. They had good levels of ripeness and balancing acidity with moderate potential alcohol which was very promising.

Yields

Assessment of the Wines

The climatic conditions of the 2016 vintage severely affected yields in Burgundy. Overall, according to the BIVB, the body which represents growers, production was 20% below average but the results were patchy. In vineyards damaged by frost on the Côte d’Or over 60% of the crop was lost putting some family domaines under severe financial pressure. Céline Fontaine of Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard remarked that her parents had never seen such a small crop.

Overall, the quality of the wines was much better than expected with many growers remarking how relieved they were to produce such good quality wines given the difficult year.

In the Côte de Nuits, Marsannay was destroyed and Chambolle-Musigny was badly affected. Roumier’s parcel of Les Amoureuses was reduced by 50%. Neighbouring Clos de Vougeot, Echézeaux and Grands-Echézeaux were also damaged. Gevrey-Chambertin suffered frost and hail in places and several grands crus were damaged though vineyards towards Brochon were spared. By contrast, Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-Saint-Georges did relatively well and Morey-Saint-Denis escaped with a generous crop. In the Côte de Beaune, Savigny suffered severe losses but the situation in Pommard and Volnay was more mixed. Further to the south, Meursault was badly affected but Chassagne-Montrachet was harder hit. Puligny-Montrachet escaped severe damage but its grands crus were devastated. Domaines Leflaive, de la Romanée-Conti, Comtes Lafon, Lamy-Pillot, Guy Amiot and Fleurot-Larose agreed to combine their tiny crop to produce just two barrels of Montrachet in 2016. To the south, Santenay was largely unscathed. In Chablis, the worst frosts since 1981 and hailstorms in May were followed by mildew which caused havoc in the vineyards. Some parcels were completely destroyed and Domaine Sébastien Dampt lost 50% of their production. In the Mâconnais, hail storms on 13th April caused widespread damage.

The reds in particular showed well. Erwan Faiveley described them as “classic” in style, similar to the 2014s, but with greater definition. Romain Taupenot remarked that the 2016s had the ripeness of the 2015s combined with the energy of the 2014s. Christophe Roumier noted that there were two styles of red wine, those from frost damaged vineyards with low yields, which are concentrated with pronounced mineral characters, and those from undamaged vines which are rounder and more seductive. In general, the 2016s seem less concentrated than the 2015s but they are more delicate and nuanced. They will probably mature earlier than the 2015s but are more precise and pure which many Burgundy lovers will prefer. Generalisations about the whites are harder as quality is less consistent. Conditions were more challenging for whites it seems, “a vintage for growers” according to Gérard Boudot of Domaine Etienne Sauzet. Some wines display exotic characters and others lack focus but a number of growers, including Sauzet, produced outstanding whites which have a vibrant mineral character reminiscent of the energetic 2014s. These are wines which will benefit from long ageing. Conclusion Despite the difficult conditions, 2016 has produced some exceptional wines and many will prefer them to the 2015s. The 2015s will take longer to reach their peak but the 2016s will be beautiful for drinking in the meantime. The problem is going to be tracking down enough bottles to satisfy demand and after a series of short harvests there will be even more pressure on supply. Some merchants have already predicted a rise in prices but the hope will be that increases will be reasonable. 2017 is a much more generous crop after-all. James Snoxell Head of Buying

Benjamin Leroux Benjamin Leroux’s success story is one of a man who has relied on pure talent and fanfare to achieve the continued financial support that allows him to slowly build and acquire vineyards. Through contract or ownership across the Côte d’Or, he is a leading light in the wave of micro-negociant producers. He now owns 4 hectares and is hoping to focus on Meursault in future, with a plan of buying more land soon. He shies away from distinguishing the difference between Domaine and Maison as he feels this detracts from the inherent quality in each of his cuvées. “If I put my name on it, that is good enough”, he says. Benjamin is incredibly selective with whom he works, refusing opportunities to work with some of the most famous vineyards in Burgundy if the relationship and level of control is not as he wishes. Benjamin is a master of creating wines of purity and texture with the lightest touch of oak. His low intervention philosophy allows the fruit expression and terroir to shine through brightly.

Domaine Simon Bize – Chisa Bize Chisa Bize is really hitting her stride with her stewardship of this Domaine. She has remained true to the style and quality pioneered by her late husband Patrick, and continues to make excellent, characterful wines. Her passion is in the vineyard where she continues to strive towards producing exceptional quality grapes. A painfully small vintage in Savigny-lès-Beaune with a fearsome 80% loss in volume wiped out the majority of the premier crus. However, there was still a smile on her face, both for the undeniable quality of the wines they were able to make in 2016, but also of a fine and full crop achieved in 2017.

The flavours are cradled in fine, supple tannins and underscored by a firm line of minerality penetrating into a long, fresh, black-fruited finish. Drink from 2022. .

Domaine Blain-Gagnard – Jean-Marc Blain Charming, humble and justifiably proud of the beautiful results of an undoubtedly difficult vintage, Jean-Marc again highlighted how small production was in 2016. Not only did the frost affect volume, but they took the decision to only harvest grapes from the first flowering rather than the second flowering 15 days later. In many cases, grapes struggled to achieve optimal ripeness which further reduced yields. His fastidious selection in the vineyards has certainly achieved the perfect balance between ripeness of fruit, mineral tension and acidity.

Jean-Marc Boillot Jean-Marc attributes the exceptional quality of his wines to the calibre of vineyards that he is blessed to work with - especially his ‘Old Lady’ Champ Canet which was planted by his grandfather Etienne Sauzet. Fine wine runs deep in his and his family’s blood, and it continues to be a family affair, with Jean-Marc running the domaine alongside his daughter Lydie. According to the ever charming Lydie, 2016 is a very good expression of their house style. These are wines from some of the finest vineyard locations and are excellent reflections of their terroir.

Domaine Bouchard Père et Fils – Frédéric Weber Domaine Bouchard Père et Fils is the largest vineyard owner in the Côte d’Or and one of the oldest and most impressive producers in the region with 130 hectares, including 12 hectares of grands crus and 74 hectares of premiers crus. Our tasting in Bouchard’s historic cellar in Beaune was conducted by Philip Prost who gave us a fascinating overview of the vintage. He reported how the frost had resulted in an extremely uneven vegetative growth and how, combined with drought, this had affected the ripeness making it hard to choose the harvest date for each vine. Picking took place under clear skies from September 21st ending on October 6th in the Côte de Nuits. Overall, Bouchard suffered a 25% reduction in production in 2016 though some areas, such as Meursault, suffered much greater damage. The reds are attractive and pure but the whites seem to have benefited most from the concentrating effects of low yields and a late harvest. The resulting wines have intense flavours and a firm mineral structure which give them plenty of ageing potential.

Mâcon-Chardonnay Le Berceau 12 bottles £225.00 A genuine step up from the village wine, the Le Berceau shows greater definition all around. Puligny-Montrachet

6 bottles £219.00 In 2016 the damage to Jean-Marc’s vineyard in Bâtard-Montrachet was so extensive that the remaining fruit was used in this village wine lending both a breadth and depth that are greater than usual. Pear and apple are in abundance and show an impressive concentration for a village wine. Excellent length and balance are evident. Drink from release to 2022.

Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru La Garenne

6 bottles £336.00 The bouquet shows a different profile to the village wine, combining saline, citrus and mineral characteristics. Flavours of apple predominate, but there is a lovely melange of flavours here. The wine shows good concentration, texture and persistence. Drink from 2020.

Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts 6 bottles £345.00 This has a much more high-toned, citrus forward nose than the Garenne. The flavours blend into a somewhat luscious and spiced mouthful that is quite lively. It all melds into a well-balanced mouthful showing good length. Really moreish. Drink from 2020. Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Champ Canet

6 bottles £345.00 This vineyard was planted by Jean-Marc’s grandfather, Etienne Sauzet, and produces a richer style of Puligny. The 2016 has a lovely multi-layered nose that shows great potential. In the mouth we also have a broad, multi-dimensional wine melding fruit and acidity in equal measure. There is a slightly chalky minerality on the finish helping the fruit linger on the palate. An excellent Champ Canet.

Le Montrachet Grand Cru

Domaine des Clos – Grégoire Bichot Grégoire Bichot in Nuits-Saint-Georges is a passionate vigneron whose wines reflect the warmth of his personality; they are full of energy and character. Grégoire is a natural optimist but seems to have suffered more than most in the last few vintages. The 2015s were reduced by 50% and his 2016s suffered severe frost damage, his Beaune 1er Cru Les Avaux being completely destroyed. Fortunately for Grégoire and other small growers, the 2017 crop was much more generous, allowing him to hang on for another year. In the meantime, he seems to have hit his stride with the 2016s with their beautiful purity of fruit and lovely length. These wines seem more refined than the 2015s which reflects the character of the vintage and his increasing experience in the vineyards.

6 bottles £2,700.00 1 magnum £905.00 Beautifully elegant and complex, the bouquet opens with delicate scents of white flowers, freshly cut almonds and pithy citrus fruits. The palate is tightly coiled and refreshing with intense lemon and mineral fruit flavours leading to an incredibly long finish with a seasoning of delicate spices. Le Montrachet, Bouchard Père & Fils

armitwines.co.uk/burgundy

Domaine Darviot-Perrin – Didier and Julie Darviot This charming estate is known for its high average vine age and strict pruning in the vineyards, two factors that help restrict yields, achieve great concentration and add tension alongside an electric freshness. The estate has a particularly cold cellar, which leads to a slow rate of malolactic fermentation; gently rounding things off with finesse without adding too much butter or weight and all the while maintaining a fresh core that adds line and length. Without the celebrity that Roulot, Coche and Lafon have, the Darviot family quietly build on their reputation year on year by making attractive Meursault with appealing energy. Lovers of Meursault should look no further than this estate for age-worthy and charming wines. Even in trickier white vintages you always know the team at Darviot-Perrin will produce beautifully precise, intense and fresh wines. Didier and Julie's daughter Alix is in charge of the wine making and her energy, enthusiasm and positivity is clearly reflected in their wines which radiate joie de vivre. 2016 has shown the potential for some variation in quality in white far more than red, but in Darviot-Perrin you can remain confident in the consistently excellent wines. One of the earliest producers to start harvesting their whites, there is purity, intensity and terroir transparency apparent from Bourgogne level through to premier cru.

Domaine Faiveley – Erwan Faiveley Located in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Domaine Faiveley has been making wine since 1825. They own more than 120 hectares of vines on exceptional terroirs including 10 grands crus and 20 premiers crus. Now managed by Erwan Faiveley, the wines are made with enormous passion and great attention to detail with a focus on the vineyards. Picking is carried out by hand and the harvest is carefully sorted as it arrives at the winery to select the finest fruit. The 2016s were an absolute pleasure to taste from barrel. Erwan described his surprise about how well the wines had evolved in barrel following such a traumatic year, with both frost and mildew, describing the wines as very elegant and classic in style. Frost damage was patchy, with severe reductions in Batârd-Montrachet and Bienvenues-Batârd, for example, but a normal crop in Corton Charlemagne.

Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru

Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard – Céline Fontaine It has been an undeniably tough 5 years in terms of volume for producers the length and breadth of Burgundy, but 2016 really took the biscuit. Céline reported that it was the smallest crop in the memory of her parents which puts into context just how dramatic the effects of the April frosts were. Despite a very challenging growing season, the quality of the white wines at Fontaine-Gagnard is exceptional, it is just a shame there is not more of them. Céline runs the domaine with the involvement of her parents, Richard and Laurence, and has firmly established herself as one of a talented vanguard of producers making exceptionally complex, pure and energizing wines, particularly in this run of challenging vintages.

Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Romanée

Domaine Fourrier – Jean-Marie Fourrier The wines of Jean-Marie Fourrier have always been keenly fought over, but the release of the 2016 vintage will see an even more fearsome battle for the tiny volumes produced. Focus in the media thus far has been on the devastating frosts that hit on the 26th and 27th April which severely reduced yields. Indeed, yields in Jean-Marie’s vineyards were down by 50% across Chambolle-Musigny Village and the premiers crus, while Gevrey-Chambertin Village and premiers crus were down 30%. This year it is worth sharpening your elbows and endeavouring to secure an allocation, however small, for the red wines of 2016 are sublime showing beautiful terroir transparency. The end of the season (July to September) was hot and dry which concentrated the already small berries. This resulted in thick skins and a high pulp to juice ratio which succeeded in adding depth and structure to the beautiful profile that 2016 showed. Pure lifted fruit, vibrant acidity and a firm and thrilling mineral core are the signature to these wines

6 bottles £330.00 Lovely deep concentrated fruit with baked apple and white pear underpinned by mineral freshness. Creamy and silken on the palate with preserved lemons and delicate integrated spice and a bright, linear acidity which drives into the long silky finish. Drink from 2020.

6 bottles £795.00 Smoky, spicy oak with rich depths of ripe yellow apple and nut. There is a spicy grip on the rich palate opening to reveal red apple skin and raspberry. The savoury mineral core and fresh, precise acidity add poise to this impressive and powerful wine. Drink from 2023.

Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru 6 bottles £825.00 A powerhouse of a wine with rich yellow apple, preserved lemon and ripe stone fruits pulsing with intensely spicy mineral energy. The palate is broad and powerful with baked apples, peach, cinnamon and nutmeg atop a coiled, steely core of minerality and pure, driven acidity. Le Montrachet Grand Cru 1 bottle £395.00 Delicate yet intense, the wine is a beautiful complex lattice work of apple and kiwi, white blossom and fresh wild herb aromatics with sweeping undercurrents of savoury almonds and minerality. An exercise in effortless grace and complexity. Stunning. Drink from 2024.

Domaine Grivot – Etienne Grivot Visiting Etienne Grivot is always a highlight of the en primeur tasting calendar. He controls an extremely enviable vineyard portfolio and possesses an equally enviable reputation for the consistently exceptional quality of his wines. Vosne-Romanée was not hit as hard as some areas in 2016, but the domaine’s yields were down over 30% in Nuits-Saint-Georges and over 50% in Echézeaux. They had to “fight a war with mildew” according to Mathilde Grivot, but judging from the samples we tasted the Grivot's won the battle. This is another estate where the younger generation is taking on greater responsibility and has produced some classic Pinot Noir showing freshness and energy.

Domaine Antonin Guyon Domaine Antonin Guyon, based in Savigny-lès-Beaune, is one of the largest family owned wineries in the Côte d’Or. Started by Antonin Guyon in the 1960s, the domaine is now run by Antonin’s son Dominique, with the help of his daughter Hombeline who recently joined the estate to take part in its day-to-day management. This 45 hectare property produces classic wines of great quality from 25 different appellations mostly in premier and grand cru vineyards. The grapes are hand harvested and carried to the winery in small boxes where they undergo a further rigorous sorting. Cellar master Vincent Nicot follows a traditional approach with fermentation in open wooden vats which gives the wines an elegant character with plenty of ageing potential. According to Vincent, the 2016 whites are marked by their “freshness and purity” and the reds by their “intensity and lovely purity” and will be enjoyable in their youth whilst having the capacity to age well.

Domaine Humbert Frères Based in Gevrey on the road up to the Combe de Lavaux, the domaine is run by the fourth generation, brothers Frédéric and Emmanuel Humbert. They have enviable vineyard holdings throughout Gevrey, with Charmes-Chambertin at the pinnacle of their estate. Manou Humbert explained that phenolic ripeness comes easily due to their very old vines, so the focus for him at harvest time is always on keeping a pure, poised acidity in the wines rather than picking on potential alcohol. In the cellar all his timings are dictated by the moon, though he is not biodynamic. True to his word his wines are tautly structured, elegant and complex.

Domaine Leflaive

Armit Wines Burgundy 2016 En Primeur

armitwines.co.uk/burgundy

Domaine Leflaive – Brice de La Morandière Brice de La Morandière continues to build on the reputation of these great wines following in the footsteps of Anne-Claude Leflaive. Tasting at the Domaine is always a delight and this year we were accompanied by Chef de Cave, Louis Brière. Unfortunately frosts devastated the Leflaive vineyards so there is no Le Montrachet and the other crus are substantially reduced by as much as 80%. Mildew was also difficult to manage but biodynamics strengthened the vines, according to Louis, which helped them achieve their full potential. Beautiful weather, which ensued from late June until the harvest on the 21st of September, resulted in wonderfully ripe and healthy grapes. The 2016s are elegant and attractive and will be approachable in their youth but should also age very well. They display a refined mineral energy which is the hallmark of the Domaine and gives these wines such energy and precision.

Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Folatières 3 bottles £455.00 Immediately attractive, the Folatières has an expressive bouquet bursting with citrus and stone fruits which is typical for this wine. Intense citrus flavours abound on the palate but there is change of gear midway with a burst of energy leading to a very mineral, almost salty finish. Drink from 2019. Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes 3 bottles £480.00 The smallest of the Domaine’s premiers crus with some of the oldest vines, this wine has an extra layer of complexity though the bouquet is somewhat restrained at first with subtle notes of white stone fruits and spices. Intense citrus fruit on the palate are underscored by a racy mineral freshness which leads to an incredibly long finish. Drink from 2022.

Domaines Leflaive We are also delighted to offer the Domaines Leflaive wines from vineyards outside Puligny-Montrachet. The grapes are grown following strict biodynamic principles and are vinified in Puligny-Montrachet in the same way as the Domaine wines. Quantities were severely reduced in 2016 and as a result it was not possible to produce Saint Véran, Mâcon-Solutré or Rully. The remaining two wines are beautifully balanced and could be enjoyed over the next few years but have a refreshing mineral quality which will allow them to develop further complexity.

Sweet citrus flavours are underscored by mouthwatering acidity and a chalky mineral quality which adds depth and complexity. Domaine Jean-Marc Millot Catching up with Jean-Marc Millot is always one of the highlights of a visit to Burgundy. Not only are his wines exceptional, but his wicked sense of humour and energy make the tasting memorable on many levels. Working according to organic principles in the vineyard, the majority of which are located in Vosne-Romanée, Vougeot and Echézeaux, the 2016’s were both profound and engaging. The purity of fruit and undeniable quality of the wines, he says, is thanks to his talented daughter Alix and the subtle changes she has made since taking over the reins of the winemaking in 2014. These include destemming the wines at reception and increasing the length of cold maceration. Alix has also experimented with sulphur substitutes such as chitosan and fermentation in amphorae for the Aligote. This producer is going from strength to strength, and is most definitely one to keep an eye on if you don’t already.

Domaine de Montille – Etienne de Montille and Winemaker Brian Sieve Domaine de Montille is one of Burgundy’s greatest estates. The wines are made for ageing but in recent years, since Hubert’s son Etienne has taken over, the domaine has moved towards expressing greater aromatic potential in the wines. The recent purchase of several new parcels of vineyards has increased the number of wines produced at this domaine and it always provides a serious and detailed overview of the vintage. According to Brian Sieve, the winemaker, 2016 “was a classic Burgundy vintage” which produced fruit of phenolic ripeness and natural potential alcohol levels of 12.5-13%. As a result, Domaine de Montille has been able to produce a range of wines with excellent balance. They are bright and crisp, displaying fresh, crunchy tannins and steely acidity. They are, as Brian stated during our visit, “wines that could only be made in Burgundy”.

Domaine Marc Morey – Sabine Mollard Domaine Marc Morey is one of the most respected producers in Chassagne-Montrachet. Through a century of steady growth, these elegant wines are reaching their full potential under Sabine Mollard, the 4th generation of the family to work at the domaine. Sabine continues to make wines with great tension and finesse that are immediately appealing in their youth, as well as having a great capacity to age. She has been working closely with other growers to improve vineyard management, including finding an optimum fruit to leaf ratio, and has focussed on achieving a balance between alcohol and freshness. Domaine Marc Morey was badly hit by the April frost and Sabine described how that was just the start of a challenging growing season that required lots of work in the vineyards to mitigate the mildew pressure of May and June before the fine weather set in.

Domaine Roumier – Christophe Roumier Christophe Roumier’s wines are known for their seductive fruit and extreme precision. Whole bunch and destemming varies depending on the vintage. He has a profound understanding of his terroir and by closely observing the conditions of the vintage he is able to craft nuanced and complex wines. He is careful not to impede site specificity and insists that it is the skins - rather than the stems - that transmit the character of each vineyard. Christophe will use between 25%-75% stems depending on the cuvée and will only use a maximum of 25-35% new oak. The 2016 vintage was going to play into the hands of the master and so it did. It is a profound, elegant, invigorating, intense and intellectual, a truly majestic vintage Domaine Roumier.

Domaine Etienne Sauzet – Gérard Boudot A visit to Domaine Etienne Sauzet is a much anticipated masterclass in the terroir of Puligny-Montrachet, from one of its most respected and outstanding producers. Gérard Boudot continues to make some of the most exciting, enigmatic and spine-tingling white wines in Burgundy. It was however, a sobering moment when Gérard stated that in living memory, no one can remember a vintage when the grands crus were almost wiped out. Hard to secure at the best of times, in 2016 they are gold dust. Mother Nature can be a cruel mistress. A master in white Burgundy, no matter what the vintage conditions, Sauzet always crafts the most breathtakingly intense, fresh, crystalline and complex white wines. They have excelled again in 2016.

Domaine Taupenot-Merme – Romain Taupenot A visit with Romain Taupenot is always an enlightening experience. He can be relied upon to provide a good, honest overview of the vintage and he is a deep thinker who never ignores the finer details. Romain is a master of restraint and that is reflected in his personality. His focus on the finer details and adherence to tradition carries through in his crystalline wines which embody precision, transparency and subtlety. Like many of the great winemakers of this generation, Romain takes a direct influence from the great Henri Jayer, aiming to create classic, red-fruited wines that speak of their place. Romain equated the style of 2016 to an impressive combination of the ripeness of 2015 balanced by the nerve of 2014; a winning combination. As all reports have shown, the growing conditions challenged producers on 3 levels; frost, humidity and drought. Romain’s fastidious attention to detail in the vineyard was paramount to maintaining quality, particularly in the early summer when humidity was high. The final 3 months of sun which brought much needed relief to the growers came with its own challenges as drought stress became a consideration towards the end of September. Though it was certainly a baptism of fire, the quality at this excellent producer was as expected, absolutely stellar.

Domaine Anne et Hervé Sigaut – Anne Sigaut A familiar tale of woe was told at Domaine Sigaut where crop reductions averaged 50% across the various appellations. Once again it was a case of frost decimating vineyards in April, of high rot pressure in May and June, followed by a warm dry Indian summer from July to September that rescued the vintage. The wines have beautiful concentration, terroir transparency and freshness. This truly is a Pinot Noir lover’s vintage as it reveals itself in all its perfumed, nervy, mineral glory. Anne and Hervé work according to the lunar calendar, both in the vineyard and in the cellar, and they work organically from flowering onwards. They will only resort to sprays if they are in danger of losing the harvest. They are genuine and down to earth people, and their wines are a beautiful reflection of their love for Chambolle.

Domaine Aurélien Verdet – Aurélien Verdet Aurélien Verdet is an enthusiastic and driven young winemaker whose father was one of the pioneers of organic viticulture in Burgundy. Aurélien has carried on the tradition and all his vineyards are certified organic. He believes the best wines are made in the vineyard and he works his vines with meticulous care and attention to detail. In the cellar his approach is to use minimal amounts of sulphur, very moderate pressing and the gentlest possible extraction. The overall aim is to express the purest fruit character. As if this year’s decimated crop wasn’t sad enough, Aurélien announced that it is the last vintage of Morey-Saint-Denis that he will be making. Having spent years working in that vineyard to get the quality of the grapes to the level he wanted, the vineyard his been sold from under him and with it, his contract has gone. In its place he has found another Nuits-SaintGeorges vineyard to start weaving his magic on. We look forward to seeing the results next year.

Domaine Sébastien Dampt – Sébastien Dampt Sébastien Dampt is one of those producers who are able to produce brilliant wines year after year despite the challenges of vintages such as 2016. A cold spring was accompanied by severe frosts in 2016, the worst in twenty years, which reduced the yield from the beginning. This was followed by a period of rain, which caused mildew, and the flowering was late. August by contrast was extremely hot which burned some vines. The situation looked distinctly unpromising at this stage. Luckily the weather in September was sunny and conditions were almost perfect during the harvest. Yields were reduced by at least 50% but the grapes achieved excellent levels of ripeness. As a result, according to Sébastien, “the wines are very concentrated but they have great elegance and lovely freshness which will allow them to age well”.

Domaine William Fèvre – Didier Séguier William Fèvre has become the benchmark for classic Chablis. With 78 hectares of vineyards and holdings in five of the seven grand cru appellations, no other producer can claim such a wide array of the finest vineyards in Chablis. Didier Séguier, who manages the estate, described a torrid year with a damp start followed by severe frost in late April. Hail storms caused further damage in May followed by heavy rains which triggered one of the worst attacks of mildew ever seen. Fortunately, warm weather returned from July. Picking started on the 22nd of September and brought in ripe and clean grapes with excellent maturity though yields were down by at least one-third. The resulting wines are rich and approachable but maintain a fine mineral edge and an impressive freshness.

Terms and Conditions

Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses 12 bottles £665.00 Les Preuses is probably taken from the word “Perreuse” meaning stone, the name given to the ancient Roman road which ran below the vineyard. Made for ageing, this wine has a floral bouquet with notes of white pear and a whiff of gunflint. The palate is intense and refreshing with a refined mineral finish and it will need a few more years to develop. Drink from 2020.

“En Primeur” is a French wine trade term for wine which is sold as a “future”, i.e. prior to being bottled and/ or for delivery at a future date. En Primeur wines are usually offered one or two years post the vintage.

Chablis Grand Cru Valmur 12 bottles £720.00 Valmur has deeper soils than the other grands crus and its shape is reminiscent of a small valley, hence the name. A restrained bouquet, with notes of green and white fruit, leads to a dense palate with lemon and lime flavours. The finish is long and powerful with a firm mineral edge. Drink from 2020. Chablis Grand Cru Bougros Côte Bouguerots

12 bottles £735.00 Bougros sits on a very steep slope at the foot of the hill facing due south. The shallow soil prevents excessive yields resulting in complex and robust wines. The 2016 has a complex bouquet with scents of oyster shell and white flowers. The palate is dense and powerful with a firm structure balanced by a zippy mineral freshness. Drink from 2020.

Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 6 bottles £415.00 Les Clos enjoys a southerly aspect with very white deep clay soils resting on a limestone bed which brings great complexity to the wine. Remarkably elegant, the bouquet reveals floral spice notes with a breezy mineral quality. The palate is broadly textured and generous with green apple and pithy citrus fruits balanced by a refreshing lemon character. A wine with impressive depth, it would benefit from five or more years in bottle before drinking. Drink from 2022.
