hourglass body shape

Rocking the hourglass

Possibly the best-known body shape, the hourglass can also be described as ‘curvy’

THIS MONTH: THE HOURGLASS W omen with this figure have bust and hips roughly the same width, while the waist is well-defined or narrow. Chances are, you’ll also have a full bust, hips and thighs. Oddly enough, in the past women would wear tight corsets to force their body into having the narrow waist of the hourglass shape because it was so envied (and a true hourglass is relatively rare as well).

Fortunately for us, these days society recognises all body shapes as equally beautiful.

Dressing this figure can be as simple or as complicated as you wish, when it comes down to it.

If you’re more self-conscious about your womanly curves, an A-line or shift dress looks amazing.

Many shift-style dresses come with a tie or thin belt for around the waist, so you can choose whether or not to wear it on any particular day.

Speaking of which, belts are a girls’ best friend when you have curves like this.

For the hourglass, the waist is often the most defined feature, so a belt worn around the middle will draw attention to it.

This is one of the reasons a fit-and-flare dress can work well; or any dress with a defined waist and flowing skirt, for that matter.

These dresses will bring attention to your bust and waist where the cloth is fitted, and accentuate your hips with the flowy skirt.

A similar principle goes for pants, particularly jeans: the higher waisted, the better.

Pair with a form-fitting shirt, or tuck a flowy shirt into the waistband for the best look.

Skinny jeans will also look fantastic on you.

Regarding necklines, anything that accentuated the bust is a go; the only necklines you should avoid are turtleneck and (according to some) the classic crew.

As with dresses, anything form-fitting up top usually works, and wrap styles is where it’s at for the hourglass.

If you’re thinking the theme here is to bring attention to your waist and highlight your bust and hips, you’d be correct.

For this figure, you want to avoid dresses that are super flowy and shapeless (unless you’re going to add a great belt), boxy jackets and blazers or those that have no structure, pants that have a lot of chunky detailing around the hips, and tops with big sleeves that fall around the bust.

Another perk of an hourglass shape is that, even if you are petite in stature, you have fantastic legs.

This is where the skinny jean works wonders, yet again, by elongating and slenderising them.

The same goes for leggings – just ensure they’re full-length and not crop for the best effect.

For dress hemlines, anything from mini to just past the knee looks amazing on you.

Avoiding a maxi dress or skirt is probably best, as they are generally shapeless and hide your curves and legs.

Whatever your outfit, pair with a set of heels or wedges and you’re ready to own it.
