Reality Check: Chit Chat
ANONYMOUS OPINIONS AND STORIES ABOUT NOT SO PERFECT VALENTINES DATES
My partner took me on a picnic, but wouldn’t eat the food I packed, he had to stop and get Maccas. He made me carry everything all the way down to the waterfall then decided it was too hot, we walked all the way back, ate on the ground next to our parked car and he fell asleep on the blanket immediately after eating. We’re still together seven years later. Funnily enough, not my worst present though. He got me a 24-carrot necklace one year… As in24 actual carrots on a rope.
Five years ago, my ex-boyfriend and I went into South Bank in Brisbane and he told me that the whole night was taken care of, he had put down deposits for everything. I thought “Oh awesome, that’s one less thing for me to worry about.”
Once we’d finished our meal at the restaurant, they brought the bill over and showed us the total which came to $100 or something. He then looked at me and said “alright where’s your card? … He was saying that the only reason why everything was taken care of was because I was coming along and because I work.
It was our first Valentine’s Day together and still in our honeymoon phase of dating, so everything felt perfect. I came home from the shops and my boyfriend had bought me flowers and was waiting at the door to greet me. We had decided to go to a favourite pub of ours in the city and so caught public transport. We had a bottle of Moet I had been saving for a day like this too. When we got to the pub it was completely booked out to other couples for Valentine’s Day. Instead, we got some hot chips and sat at the park, poured some Moet for ourselves and then discovered neither of us like Champagne. It was still the best Valentine’s Day and I’ll remember it forever.
Things hadn’t been working out with my girlfriend for a while. Whether it was poor communication or something else I don’t know, but it came to the day where it was silly pretending to be in a romantic relationship. I invited her out to lunch at a cafe and explained to her that it wasn’t working. I told her I hoped we could stay friends and like clockwork the barrister arrived with our coffees which has hearts drawn in the foam and they wished us happy Valentine’s Day. My ex-girlfriend then broke down and I realised I’d broken up with her on Valentine’s Day.

Valentine’s Day done differently
Want to spoil your significant other this Valentine’s but also stay on track of your health and fitness goals?
Like Christmas and Easter, Valentine’s Day is often used as an excuse to binge eat or overdo it on sweet desserts, chocolate and champagne.
It can be tempting to treat yourself to a fancy three-course meal, with wine and other alcoholic drinks flowing.
But to save yourself some cash and really know what’s going into your food, why not try something different and cook your own threecourse meal, or whip up some easy treats to take on a picnic?
Studies have consistently linked people who cook more regularly at home with better health than those who eat out more often.
Even if you’re not a whiz in the kitchen, there are plenty of simple recipes sure to impress. My picks include: 1. Chocolate covered strawberries – melt your own chocolate and dip strawberries in
2. Red velvet cupcakes – no judgment on packet mix 3. Homemade pizza – add lots of fresh vegetables and have a go at making your own base
4. Simple salads – include a variety of coloured fruit and vegetables BY GINA HORN – DIETITIAN

5. Gourmet sandwiches – there are plenty of great vegetarian and vegan options
6. Filo pies – choose your protein and the flavour possibilities are endless
7. White wine spritzer – add soda water or lemon lime to white wine to make a refreshing, lower-alcohol cocktail
You don’t have to go all out to spoil your Valentine and might find they will be more impressed with a home-cooked meal.
Have your date in the kitchen together and see what you can create as a team.
