Christmas Guide 2019

The weather is heating up, school holidays are imminent and the shopping centres are gearing up for the influx of shoppers. Christmas is upon us and trends in seasonal design are particularly rich this year, yet have taken a more pared back and organic approach to what is normally a complete styling overhaul of Christmassy delight. Let’s explore what’s hot in festive décor to ignite and rediscover the joy and excitement this holiday brings. Arguably the biggest style trend focuses on sustainability and respect for our environment, introducing new materials and natural elements to Christmas design. Natural beauty will inspire the decorations and is reflected in the surfaces, while the mantra “less is more” takes precedence. Simple, rich, elegant and light, the use of timber, stone and greenery will reflect these qualities, acting

as the main statement in Christmas decorating. Hang greenery of twigs, pinecones, eucalyptus or palms from lights, shelving and walls, leave timber and stone surfaces exposed with minimal decorations allowing their natural element to be the hero. Metal hues and metallics are still proving popular this year, however they are not excessive or flashy, the shine has been reduced and aged glow is taking over. Patina, oxidised and rust finishes not only complement the trending organic vibes, but offer a more vibrant and warm texture to decorations. Let’s talk colour. If you consider that Christmas this year is pared back, organic with an abundance of natural beauty, it would make sense that our colour palette follows suit. Think opulent, bold and expressive with metallic elements to bring a certain cosiness and an energising hint to your Christmas festivities. Rich blues and greens are the perfect hues to create these dramatic combinations. On the other end of the spectrum, we are seeing pastel shades come into favour, following a neutral and subtle colour palette. Suited more for light and bright interiors, pastel hues blend with trending light and natural elements, instead of creating a bold statement. Supporting our desire for sustainability, a huge trend this year will be introducing heirlooms and vintage pieces into Christmas décor. Vintage is an inevitable part of Christmas - it is a celebration of tradition and family, after all. Consider the divine craftsmanship of classic glass ornaments for a touch of traditional, or DIY motifs made by adults and kids alike which exude a sense of love and family within every home. Nordic and Scandinavian influences remain popular as contemporary simplicity and sophistication stands to be the overall trend objective this year. While I may talk about Christmas design and trending styles, what really matters is what we can give and how we spend Christmas. I hope you all have a wonderful and safe festive season.
