Welcome to the biggest year yet of the sunshine coast business aWards This incredible year has been a showstopper from the beginning as we prepare to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the region’s longest running, most prestigious business awards. For the first time, we welcomed two Platinum partners, being Sunshine Coast Council and Visit Sunshine Coast, who share our vision for recognising the dynamism of the local economy and the many growing industries that underpin it. We have also broken new records, in every way. This year saw a dramatic jump in the number of business nominated – 847 nominations of small to large businesses from Caloundra to Noosa across a wide range of categories were made, representing an 88% increase from last year. The total number of registrations, including businesses who did not complete their application, was 327 – an increase of 26% on last year. Of these, 210 submissions were made, an increase of 22% from 2018. Overall these numbers add up to indicate strong participation in the awards program across the board. It’s an exciting result for our small but vibrant voluntary committee to see such

keen interest from so many businesses of every size who are willing to undergo the challenging process of examining and sharing their business’ performance and progress with judges. I can honestly say that one of the greatest experiences and learnings for me each year as Chair is to work alongside the high calibre committee members we have, all experts in their own fields and generous about giving their time, ideas and insights throughout the year to ensure the success of the Awards. Our community will again gather together to acknowledge the many exemplary businesses and their teams that call our region home on Saturday November 9 at Novotel Twin Waters. The gala dinner event has broken another record and we are thrilled to be hosting more than 830 guests in the new centre for our largest awards ceremony to date. The purpose of the awards is to seek out, highlight and recognise innovation, entrepreneurship and commitment from throughout our business community to growing, evolving, improving, creating employment and performing. hrM HRM has been consistently delivering outstanding results in the recruitment and human resource services sector on the Sunshine Coast, across QLD and into NSW since 2005. Why? Because we’re a locally owned and

operated business and we fully understand the needs and challenges facing Sunshine Coast businesses. We pride ourselves on connecting high calibre employment candidates with the business community.

Well respected in the community, and as a leader in their field, HRM have the experience and capabilities to manage all aspects of recruitment and human resource services across a broad range of industries. HRM are large enough to have developed long-lasting relationships with a range of local businesses and key industry players, and are also small enough to offer the high standard of service and care that can sometimes be overlooked by larger corporations. Led by industry powerhouse Sally Desch, who has been operating in the recruitment sector for more than 20 years, Sally leads with passion, professionalism and integrity. HRM’s impressive client list (including three local councils and mandated water supplier) is testament to the quality service delivered by Sally’s team. “Because we’re a locally owned and

operated business, we fully understand the needs and challenges facing Sunshine Coast businesses,” Sally said. Our clients want people who are great at what they do, and can contribute to their businesses in productive and positive ways. Our candidates want somewhere they can feel they belong, are valued, and can grow and develop in their chosen fields. We know people can either make or break a business - a dynamic team can totally transform a business and help develop it beyond the business owners’ vision. Getting the right fit takes a lot of time and investigation into both the business, and the candidate - much more than what we can see on paper - which is why our focus is heavily on building relationships.

We understand every business is different No matter what stage your business is at or challenges it might be facing, HRM offers a wide range of human resource services to meet your needs and add value to your business operations:

They source sustainable and ethical products that are trending and highly sought after within the furniture industry. Abide Interiors sales and marketing manager Jeremy Nicholl said they pride themselves on offering quality and unique furniture to the market. “We listen to our customers feedback on our product range and always look for gaps in the designer furniture market,” he said. “Listening to customer feedback has enabled us to create several unique products which are now in production.” Mr Nicholl said they are recognised in the industry as being reliable and effective at getting their products to the end user.

AuSSIe SoLeS Aussie Soles was born in Noosa, Sunshine Coast, with mateship at its heart. Founded by Coast entrepreneur Craig Taplin more than 16 years ago, the footwear maker strives to create footwear that you can rely on - footwear that will support your every step, no matter what direction you go. In 2013, Craig noticed a lack of orthotic-designed footwear for the lifestyle and leisure market. His idea was simple: make thongs and sandals that are good for your feet. From there, Aussie Soles was made, and it is now a leading maker of orthotic thongs and sandals, stocked at pharmacies and shops around Australia and shipped overseas. The Coolum-based business took out the Manufacturing category at last year’s Sunshine Coast Business Awards for its teamwork, business management, innovation and focus on future growth.

The award recognised Aussie Soles for its outstanding leadership of the local industry and its own contribution to the talent and high calibre of business throughout the region. “I feel so honoured to win this award. Manufacturing comes with some big challenges,” Craig said. “I am so proud of my team at Aussie Soles and without them, this award or nomination would not have been possible.” It has again been named finalist for SCBA this year, recognising the business’ continued achievements as a leading manufacturer in the region. A firm believer in giving back to those less fortunate in the community at home and abroad, Aussie Soles has so far donated over 180,000 pairs of footwear to charities who share our vision of putting shoes on their feet. In 2017 Aussie Soles became a firsttime partner of the Laguna Real Estate

Festival of Surfing men’s and women’s standup paddleboard (SUP) race divisions. “I truly believe the more you give the more you get,” Craig said to the Sunshine Coast Daily at the time. “When you make someone else happy it makes you feel better overall.” The small company, with only six employees in Australia, hands over the seconds and unwanted stock to the non-profit organisation To The Nations. “I could easily sell these to a clearance store but that would put all of these shoes that are essentially identical into the market place,” Craig said. “We would be then selling a product that is inferior. That isn’t me...” Craig said rather than throwing the stock into landfill or recycling and making something else, they were recycling it by sending it to Africa.

craig taplin (centre) has donated over 200,000 pairs of shoes. he is now developing a new incentive that sees every pair bought means a pair goes to someone in need. staff members Kim de haas and mark de haas. Photo/Patrick Woods

“The messages and photos that we get from places like Zambia and surroundings is fantastic. This is the little thing that I can do with my little business in Australia.” Customers rave about Aussie Soles: “I absolutely love these thongs. I have been wearing them for quite a few years now, have tried other brands but keep coming back to these. I have a couple of different colours so you can keep changing them to suit.” – Diane “Always been happy with the Starfish thongs and you are very prompt with sending them which is a BONUS. If I am going to wear thongs I am glad to know that these are better for my feet. Thank you!” – Jeanette “I have problems with my feet and these shoes are fabulous! JuST SKIN TreATMeNT cLINIc treating skin cancer with Superficial radiotherapy Just Skin treatment clinic, located in both Maroochydore and Gympie, is one of the only private practices in Australia to offer Superficial Radiotherapy, a revolutionary, evidence based non-surgical treatment for nonmelanoma skin cancer. With skin cancer affecting two out of three Australians by the time they’re 70, having a choice when it comes to treatment options is exceptionally important for overall health and wellbeing of those impacted. Superficial Radiotherapy differs from the more commonly known types of radiotherapy. As the term ‘superficial’ suggests, the treatment only penetrates skin deep making it ideal to treat non-melanoma skin cancer. The treatment works by using a form of low energy x-ray to directly target

and kill the skin cancers’ DNA with pinpoint accuracy. The impact causes irreversible damage to the skin cancer cells and once healed, fresh new skin remains in its place.

Superficial radiotherapy is known the world over for its extremely effective treatment of non-melanoma skin cancers including Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) and Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC), the most common type of skin cancers. BCC’s account for approximately 70% of all non-melanoma skin cancer diagnosis in Australia, with SCC making up the remaining 30%. Both these types of skin cancers, along with Bowen’s Disease, can be mistakenly identified as harmless lumps or sores to the untrained eye but if left untreated can cause painful, wounds or even death.

The team at Just Skin Treatment Clinic are thrilled to be recognised as a

finalist in the Health and Wellbeing category of the Sunshine Coast Business Awards. For them, being able to extend this remarkable solution in the Sunshine Coast and Gympie regions is exceptional and therefore, are so grateful to patients, GPs and the wider community for their continued support.

Wurtulla Plumbing & Drainage are your specialists in domestic, commercial and industrial plumbing, emergency plumbing, gas-fitting, hot water installation and repairs, drain cleaning and more. We are a family business that has grown from a single operator in 1988 to being one of the largest plumbing companies on the Sunshine Coast. Founder Les O’Keefe started the business after completing an apprenticeship in Melbourne and moving up to the Sunshine Coast, and still works in the business today. With a young family to support, and work on the Coast at the time hard to come by following the 1987 sharemarket crash, Les figured his best option was to be self-employed, and thus Wurtulla Plumbing & Drainage was born. WPD’s success is driven by their wide service offering – “we are effectively a ‘one stop’ shop for anything plumbing related, whether it be installation

The festival is run by Cooroy Chamber of Commerce and provides significant economic, social and cultural returns to our community. This year the event resulted in over 9500 direct visitor nights from attendees, an economic return to the region of over $1.5 million and significant media exposure for the Coast. The event received rave reviews with 97% of attendees stating that residents should feel proud of the festival. With over 100 volunteers getting involved with this fantastic event, it seems they do!

“Get on the dog and bone, Give Us a Crack!”

This festival of colour is unique and fun with a community feel that reflects Cooroy’s country hospitality. The stand-out compensation law firm launched in May 2018 with two lawyers and three support staff. Since then,TSL has more than tripled in size and has established a solid reputation in the community for providing cutting edge expertise, without the price tag. Mr Schultz said it was a humbling experience to be chosen as a finalist and to be able to share the Travis Schultz Law story with the judges which included his talented and caring team and the overwhelming community support they’ve received since launching. “We’ve created quite a unique point of difference in the market,” he said. “My team and I have agreed upon

some not-so-typical ground rules and set ourselves a benchmark of committing considerable resources to community and charity causes that are important to us. “Obviously we need to do some paid legal work so we can be sustainable, but even when we do that, our philosophy focuses on providing a client-focused, low cost model.” Unlike other firms,TSL won’t charge uplift fees to cover their risks and they’ve decided that where outlays have to be paid to sustain a case, the firm pays them and doesn’t charge anything extra for doing so. “We’ve also set a cap on costs in no win/no pay matters, ensuring our clients always receive the lion’s share of any settlement they get,”Travis said. “It’s a very different way of servicing clients and our referrers tell us it’s much better.” Mr Schultz said to get up and beat his own chest was not something he felt

particularly comfortable about, so we asked a couple of this clients what they think of TSL and this is what they had to say: “As an advocate for aged care and NDIS clients, I can truthfully say no one has ever provided the professionalism or legal support in a more caring and supportive way than the Travis Schultz Law team.” - Wendy “I cannot say enough about the

professionalism that Travis Schultz Law provided us with. The team genuinely care, and nothing was too much trouble. They delivered on their promise which meant I received the lion’s share of my settlement and that gave me hope for my future.” - Kevin “The TSL team are trustworthy, reliable and professional. An expert lawyer was always available for a chat and they truly looked after us with exceptional service.” - Kathy and Mark
