hinterland swimming holes Beach there, done that? The Sunshine Coast has amazing natural beauty and secret (not-so-secret) swimming holes to enjoy when temperatures start to rise. A word of caution first, do not dive into rock pools, no matter how deep they may seem. Swim with a friend or groups and use caution after heavy rainfall. Finally, do not swim if water is flowing swiftly, especially if spilling into lower pools. Wappa Falls, Yandina

Just outside Yandina, Wappa Falls provides a relaxing place to unwind including a big grassy area for kids and a playground. An easy walk past the dam will bring you to Wappa Falls where there are cool rock pools for swimming and usually loads of wildlife including turtles and birds. Take Nambour-Yandina Road and turn onto Wappa Falls Road. Turn into Wappa Dam (past Wappa Falls Observatory). Booloumba Falls, Conondale

Booloumba Falls (meaning butterfly in Gubbi Gubbi language) is a popular waterhole which spills over multiple rock pools into one large pool at the base. However, it can be a little bit tricky to both find and access: you’ll need a 4WD and some general idea of where you’re headed. Follow Booloumba Creek Road (off Maleny-Kenilworth Road) until it becomes gravel and reaches the Conondale National Park entrance.

each way to the falls. That’s a full day in itself, but if you have time, side track to the old gold mine site and cairn sculpture by Scottish artist Andy Goldsworthy. Kondalilla Falls, Montville

When it’s time to get away from the beach, it’s time to head to Kondalilla Falls just outside Mapleton. Gubbi Gubbi language for ‘rushing water’, the falls produce a unique swimming hole area suitable for the whole family. The Falls circuit will take 2-3 hours to complete and includes over 100 steps so take your time and enjoy the scenery both on the way in and back out. Take Flaxton Drive onto Kondalilla Falls Road and follow for about 2km to the car park. Gardener’s Falls, Maleny

Off Obi Lane South, Gardener’s Falls is an easy 10 minute walk from the carpark, taking you alongside the creek to a waterhole oasis. There’s also a rope swing for the brave. Turn off the Maleny-Landsborough Road about 3km from Maleny town centre. Follow Obi Lane South for 1.5km. Kondalilla Falls, Montville. Tourism and Events Queensland

Drive past all camping and day-use areas until you reach the fourth and final area, where an incline to the left is accompanied by a sign pointing (roughly) to Booloumba Falls. From here it’s another 10 or so kilometres to reach the car park and day-use area. Artists Cascades, Conondale

The little-known Artists Cascades are small cascades which flow into a large rock pool, perfect for hot summer days. From Booloumba Creek day use area, allow plenty of time (plus water, food, hat and sunscreen) for a 5km trek the guide to the sunshine coast and noosa hinteRLand 2020
