Magical fireflies STEP into a magical world of light and discover the beauty of fireflies in the rainforest. A visit to Queen Mary Falls is wonderful and Louise Brosnan said the experience was as enchanting as it sounded. “It is thrilling each evening we see the first flash of a firefly,” she said. “Standing at the base of the falls, watching the first stars as the fireflies lazily float by is a magical experience.” Fireflies are on their hunt to attract a mate, beginning their show in late October. The lights are expected to continue until mid-December. “The best time to see the firefly display is 30 minutes after sunset,” Ms Brosnan said. She said it was best to time your walk to enjoy last light at the lookout before continuing down to the base of the waterfall as night falls. Queen Mary Falls is also home to a small colony of glow worms, which are visible all
year round at the base of the falls. “Firefly is a very poetic name but these insects are not really flies, rather a small beetle about 8mm long,” Ms Brosnan said. “Their flashing display is to attract the attention of a mate during the six-week breeding season.” Visitors are asked to bring sufficient torches, allowing at least one torch between two people. Due to the unevenness of the walking tracks, it is advised to stay on the path and walk in single file.
