MUNGUNGO PUB REMAINS A POPULAR SPOT FOR VISITORS MUNGUNGO Pub – named for an indigenous word meaning “my own country” – began as the Waratah General store in 1924. The pub was built by Elwin Burns to meet demands for rail workers and settlers starting up in the area. In 1930, the railway line to Mungungo was built, and the area became an important township servicing the line between Monto and Gladstone. Known for servicing tough men, the pub is said to

have emptied nine 18-gallon kegs of beer a week. Today, Mungungo Pub honours that reputation as a true blue country pub, with friendly staff, hearty meals and flowing taps. It serves as a popular rest stop outside Monto township for travellers passing through, and holds regular communal activities such as the old time dances at Mungungo Hall, as well as the annual Mungngo vs the World charity cricket game.

MULGILDIE HOTEL’S GHOSTLY HISTORY BUILT in 1927, parts of this hotel were brought up from Gayndah via train to serve as an outpost for the growing expansion of farming in the region. Its first owner, Ivy Bourne, ran the hotel for more than 45 years, and it has accumulated a mass of history since. Originally licensed as a homestead, Mulgildie Hotel has always offered comfort to locals and passers-by, but became infamous for its numerous ghost sightings. Room 2 is said to be haunted by the friendly ghost of a young girl, while room 6 is occupied by the spirit of a old railway worker. Over the years, many attempts have been made to find these ghosts, and those looking to continue the legacy can request a stay in these rooms. The establishment boasts 14 rooms and is a throwback to yesteryear, well-renowned in the region for its old-world charm. Come and say g’day to publican Julie (pictured), browse the impressive art collection and try out their delicious pizzas and roast.
