mamas, creations most unique and precious pearl. And heaven help us always to remember that the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world.” Ted Harris When it comes to mothers and Mother’s Day, I’m one of the lucky ones. The Lord blessed me with a wonderful mom who loved me with fried chicken and sweet tea and so much more. All my life my mom was an amazing woman with character and grace and I never doubted that I was loved. As we’ve gotten older, our relationship has grown into a beautiful friendship. She’s my voice of reason and my anchor in the storm. Happy Mother’s Day, Mom! I couldn’t have asked for a better mom than you. In addition to Mother’s Day, May is our annual Discovery Issue. And, boy, did we have fun putting it together with stories as diverse as Demystifying DNA and reinventing your space with new faucets; from summer body sculpting to buying and selling your home in May. We took a peek inside a lovely retreat in the Pacific Palisades and tagged along on a mother/daughter lobster crawl in Maine. It was all great fun and I hope you’ll enjoy sharing it with us.

MAYOR DAVID COOK
MANSFIELD
Once again our city is joining together with Mansfield Churches FOR the City for Mansfield’s 3rd Annual National Day of Prayer event Thursday, May 3, at 6:30 p.m. at the Mansfield ISD Center for the Performing Arts. National Day of Prayer brings individuals, community leaders and pastors from across our city who, like millions of other Americans that day, will acknowledge the power of prayer to unify, heal and transform our country. We are Blessed to live in a community of strong faith, with people of compassion who care for their neighbors and work for the success of their city. It is with a heart full of Blessings that we come together in UNITY to pray for Our Country… Our Families… Our Freedoms… Our Churches… Our City… Our Schools… and Coach Daniel Maberry and his Family. There is great comfort in knowing your fellow citizens care enough to pray with you, and for you. Through the Power of Prayer, I truly believe we can make a difference in our City and in the lives of its residents.

Grand Prairie’s Prairie Paws Adoption Center, 2222 W. Warrior Trail, needs your help to foster animals while we enlarging our Animal Shelter. In May, work will displace more than 20 cats and medium to large dogs. The construction will take one month to complete. It will not affect the operating hours of the shelter. The shelter expansion started in March 2017 and should be complete summer 2018. The construction will triple the amount of cat capacity, double the amount of dog capacity, and expand the surgical area to increase the number of spay/neuter surgeries, heartworm treatments and dental health. The foster homes do not have to be located in Grand Prairie, but must be in Dallas-Fort Worth. Fosters must be at least 21-years-old. For more information or to apply, call 972-237-8513 or visit gptx.org/paws.

One of the newest rankings released that should come as no surprise to the citizens of Arlington - the website SmartAsset.com recently ranked Arlington number one on its 2018 “Top 10 Best Cities to Raise a Family in the Nation” list. Before making their selection, they considered data on eight metrics, including housing and childcare costs, school quality, unemployment rate, and graduation rate. They looked at the schools and neighborhoods, job opportunities and city services that make The American Dream City such a great place to raise a family. The competition was steep. Specifically in education, other U.S. cities earned impressive scores, but Arlington took the prize with 91 percent of students graduating high school, the second-highest rate in the study. They also saw that our schools do an excellent job preparing students with our average proficiency rate in math and reading at 75 percent. On top of that, the study found the cost of living in Arlington is well below the affordability line with the average home costing only 22.5 percent of the average household’s income. Of course, those of us who live here understand that it’s the caring residents with a can-do attitude that truly make Arlington a great place to raise a family and to live out your own American dream.

TALK OF THE TOWN
FREE OBEDIENCE TRAINING Arlington Humane Society The majority of dogs and cats that are “Put to Sleep” at government operated animal control dog pounds, and humane organizations (millions every year) got there because of a behavior problem. Dogs were biting, barking, digging, chewing, pottying in the house or committing some other offense. Cats were scratching furniture or not using the litter box. Most of these problems, if not all, can be corrected with proper obedience training, and behavior modification. There are numerous pet stores, veterinary clinics, and individuals who offer some form of training. The problem we have discovered is that many of these supposed training programs are based on theories that don’t work and taught by people who took some online training course but who have never trained any dogs. So, training doesn’t work, or it is too expensive, or I don’t want to leave my dog, or they don’t know anything about cats etc.. We get calls at the Humane Society every week from people who have tried these programs and failed. Unfortunately, many of these owners have given up on training due to a bad experience and they now want to get rid of the pet. This is how pets end up being killed at the dog pound. Training classes at the Arlington Humane Society (since 1984) are taught by professional dog trainers who have

trained thousands of dogs and cats and know how to solve behavior problems when a “cookie” doesn’t work. Over the years, we’ve saved thousands of dogs and cats from certain death at the dog pound. There are seven critical periods of psychological and sociological development that occur in all dogs. All seven of these occur prior to the puppy reaching four months old. You make or break a dog in the first four months of his life. Puppies should be separated from their litter mates at seven weeks of age and should immediately start puppy school, as soon as they receive their first set of puppy vaccinations, which should be given at this time. Puppies develop immunity, within a week of receiving their first vaccinations. This is why we give a series of puppy vaccinations that continue to develop immunity as the puppy grows. It’s not necessary nor is it advisable to wait to start training until all the puppy vaccinations have been given. By this time you have missed the most important time for training and you can’t go back and correct mistakes that were made. PUPPY KINDERGARTEN CLASS is for puppies seven-16 weeks of age and meets weekly on Saturdays. New puppies start every week. Up until four months, we’re molding behavior; after four months we’re

changing established behavioral patterns. It’s much easier to mold behavior than to go back and try to change established behavior patterns. Don’t miss this all-important period of adolescent development. In puppy class we teach house breaking, stopping chewing, master/dog relationship, beginning obedience, as well as socialization with other puppies and humans. Puppies learn how to learn. Problems such as “separation anxiety” and extreme shyness can be caused by lack of training and socialization during a dog’s first four-month period of life.
control, grooming, nutrition, and first aid. This program is very academically-oriented and is taught at a college level.
Each week after field training, dogs are put in the kennel and owners go to a classroom where they’re taught all aspects of pet care and owner responsibility. This includes behavior psychology, veterinary medicine, flea and tick

FRUIT OF THE VINE
Rule Well
MOTHERS KEEP THE WORLD SPINNING BY LISA JENKINS-MOORE
If you think for a moment the denigration of woman and her role as a mother isn’t a carefully designed battle strategy formed by the enemy of our souls, think again. We honor achievements such as education, sports contracts, career advancement, authorship, and more—but where are the accolades for those who have given selflessly and tirelessly, pouring their efforts into the next generation? Oh, mothers, I honor you and call for every reader to make an intentional effort to do so this month and always! Only recently have I begun to happily embrace my season of mothering and the great ministry of motherhood. My children are 14, 12, 10, 9, and 6 and the years have been a struggle with moments of delight and pleasure scattered in the precious hugs and kisses, late night bedtime stories, and squeals of laughter that light up the darkness. The weariness in my bones and the glaring reality of my inadequacy has robbed me of some of the ever-present joy.
24
I won’t tell you to “cherish the moments because they’ll be gone so fast,” because honestly some moments are too difficult to be cherished, and nostalgia always finds its way into our memories, making them sweeter than the actual moments ever were. I will, however, implore you to ask God for the grace to fully live in each moment, as that is His great desire for each of us in every season. The feeding, the diapering, the rocking, the singing,
The late William Ross Wallace immortalized motherhood in his wise, discerning poem… The Hand that Rocks the Cradle Is the Hand That Rules the World (1865) by William Ross Wallace (1819-1881) Blessings on the hand of women! Angels guard its strength and grace, In the palace, cottage, hovel, Oh, no matter where the place; Would that never storms assailed it, Rainbows ever gently curled; For the hand that rocks the cradle Is the hand that rules the world. Infancy’s the tender fountain, Power may with beauty flow, Mother’s first to guide the streamlets, From them souls unresting growGrow on for the good or evil, Sunshine streamed or evil hurled; For the hand that rocks the cradle Is the hand that rules the world. Woman, how divine your mission Here upon our natal sod! Keep, oh, keep the young heart open Always to the breath of God! All true trophies of the ages Are from mother-love impearled; For the hand that rocks the cradle Is the hand that rules the world.
the doctoring, the playing, the homeworking, the chauffeuring, and even the crying is significant—God sees you and honors you even if the world does not. These moments, consumed by motherhood, count. The enemy would have us romanticize the past and glorify the future while our present suffers. This day, this moment, is a gift, and being a mother is not just a worthy endeavor, it is a life-altering one—for both you and the little (or big) one in your hands. Ignore the nay-sayers, and never again say, “I’m just a home-maker” or “I’m just a stay-at-home mom.” Some of the latest research suggests mothering is equivalent to holding two and a half full time jobs! Hold your head high and know you are making a difference.
Blessings on the hand of women! Fathers, sons, and daughters cry, And the sacred song is mingled With the worship in the skyMingles where no tempest darkens, Rainbows evermore are hurled; For the hand that rocks the cradle Is the hand that rules the world.
Rule righteously and graciously, Moms.

A TRUE ALL AMERICAN COUPLE… AT HOME WITH THE THOMAS’ PHOTOS BY LAUREN MADEAN
We visited with Steven and Lori Thomas at their home on a beautiful, breezy spring evening just before sunset. Flowers and trees in bloom, bright green grass that looked like comfy carpet, bright blue sky, wind chimes ringing and pool fountains flowing made for an enjoyable space to catch up on what’s been going on in their lives. They were all smiles as we discussed the blessings of the past year, even though there were heartaches. Lori has worked in her family’s 68-year-old wholesale floor covering distribution business since 1995 and became President in 2000 when her father retired after being diagnosed with lymphoma. Since that time, Lori has diligently worked to carry out the principles laid out before her, honoring her family’s legacy. Caring for the business allowed Lori’s parents security in their retirement without worry. The Lord called Lori’s father to heaven on September 12th, 2017 after a long earthly battle. He was loved and respected by everyone that knew him, professionally and personally.

MEET DR. THOMAS
Walnut Ridge Baptist Church is an integral part of the Thomas family and they have been greatly enriched by their amazing church family. Lori is a member of choir and the Praise & Worship team. Steven serves as a greeter and was recently ordained as deacon, which is a very humbling experience. Steven loves attending Tuesday night Bible Study Fellowship and Wednesday morning small group before seeing his 7am dental patients. These studies fuel and equip him for the challenges of day to day life. Lori and Steven are thankful for the small part they play in ministries supported by their church. Allies In Youth Development, International Gospel Outreach, Compassion International and The Caring Place are especially close to their hearts. No matter where he is, who he is with or what he is doing, Steven enjoys being with people. He is thankful his profession allows time to get to know his patients personally. Steven leans on Romans 8:28
as daily inspiration. It reads, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose!” Dr. Thomas has provided full-service dental care in a warm and inviting atmosphere since 1983. Having integrity, being empathetic and being the dental professional God has called him to be is what is important to Dr. Thomas and his team. “My team keeps everything patient-centered,” Dr. Thomas said. “We’re treating our friends, family and neighbors. I’m very proud of the love and compassion my staff extends to our patients. We want the entire experience to exceed their expectations. My team makes my job a pleasure.” 4164 South Cooper Street Arlington, Texas 76015 (817) 468-1166 StevenWThomasDDS.com
Dr. Thomas was born in Fort Worth and raised in Arlington. He graduated from Texas A&M and completed dental school in Houston before returning to Arlington to begin his career. Away from work, Lori and Steven love spending time with friends and family. They have a blended family of five children ranging in age from 17-32 and 4 grandchildren. In Dr. Thomas’s care, your family will enjoy comprehensive dentistry that combines a wide variety of specialized treatments to prevent future problems, restore any current problems and enhance the overall quality of your oral health. Dr. Thomas stays on top of dental advancements through continuing education and provides the latest technology that restorative and cosmetic dentistry offer. Dr. Steven Thomas and his team look forward to meeting you and your family. Dr. Thomas is also an active member of the Academy of General Dentistry and a member of the International Team of Implantology.
DENTIST FEAR? Many people have “dental baggage” because of past experiences and have developed a very real fear or dread of sitting in the dentist’s chair. “That fear is very real to them,” he said. “Unfortunately, fear can keep people from taking preventative steps that can keep little issues from becoming become big problems. For those patients, I need to slow things down and give them a chance to talk about what they’re feeling. I can offer sedation to help relieve their anxiety. My staff and I explain the treatment plan and give them the opportunity to ask questions before we proceed. For our younger patients, we’re committed to doing everything we can to help them develop a positive impression of the dentist from the start, so they never know what it’s like to be nervous or anxious about a visit.”

REJUVENATED REAL ESTATE May is a great month to buy or sell a home BY ANNETTE BROOKS
From May baskets and Cinco de Mayo to Mother’s Day and Memorial Day, the month of May has a lot going on. It also happens to be one of the best months to buy a house. Beautiful spring weather—especially before the summer heat and humidity hits in full force—means it’s a better time for house hunting. And of course, new listings begin to pop up like Texas wildflowers. The birds are chirping, the leaves and grass are green, and sunshine streams in through the windows of your potential new home—or your current one—showcasing them in their best light. In addition to great weather and a general sense of anticipation and elation as summer draws near, May is an ideal month do a home deal from a timing perspective. A May sale typically means a June closing, which provides ample time to move and smoothly transition yourself and your children into a new neighborhood and school system. It also gives you the freedom to settle in and then enjoy a family vacation before summer is over. After all, moving is hard work. A little well-earned rest and relaxation afterward will help you reenergize as well as focus on family instead of moving boxes and unpacking. Or perhaps you want to do a little renovation on your new home before summer wanes—maybe add an outdoor kitchen to the pool area, create a spa-like master bath, or add a home theatre. Additionally, there’s usually more inventory for everyone to choose from in May, which means it’s more likely that whoever is looking is going to find what they want. If you’re buying, you may encounter some extra competition when it comes to bidding, but you’ll have more choices, and extra bids aren’t so bad if you’re selling. Waiting too long— especially if you have a family and need to get kids into a new school—can put you at risk of falling into a tight time constraint, so everyone is extra motivated to get deals done quickly this time of year too. Whether you’re ready to buy your first house or condo, upsizing, downsizing, or wish to change school systems, the perfect time to carefully choose a real estate agent and start looking for your new home is now. And if you’re interested in selling but don’t have your home on the market yet, list it now and take advantage of a healthy and active scene.

PRICE TO SELL
If you’re selling, don’t be tempted to overprice, even in a strong real estate market. Your goal should be to create as much interest as possible from the buying community. At the right price your home may even get multiple bids, some of which may be over the asking price. Ask your agent for an up-to-date comparative market analysis, then work with them to develop a winning pricing strategy.
SET YOUR EMOTIONS ASIDE
If you’re ready to change homes and you fall in love with one then negotiate based on emotions, you may end up making financial decisions you could later regret. It’s going to be your home, but it’s also an investment. Stay calm, balanced, and be wise about your decision.
CHECK OUT THE NEIGHBORHOOD 24/7
Drive by houses you’re interested in and around the neighborhood in the morning, at noon, and during the evening, before you make an offer. Find out how far it is to the nearest grocery store, healthcare services, shopping, highway access points, and parks. Look at what the traffic by the house is like. Even if you don’t have kids, research the schools. Being in well regarded school districts can greatly impact the price.

SPLIT THE DIFFERENCE
With more people working at home and welcoming guests, an area for a home office that doubles as a guest room can be in high demand. Clean out that spare room and stage it multifunctionally for prospective buyers who can feel like they’re getting two for the price of one.
GET PRE-APPROVED VERSUS PREQUALIFIED
Getting pre-qualified involves suppling a bank or lender with your overall financial picture, including debt, income, and assets. After evaluating this information, a lender can give you an idea of the size of the mortgage for which you qualify. Getting pre-approved for a mortgage takes it to the next level. It gives you an advantage when dealing with a potential seller, as he or she will know you’re one step closer to obtaining an actual mortgage. With pre-approval, you will receive a conditional commitment in writing for an exact loan amount, allowing you to look for a home at or below that price level.
MAKE IT LIGHT AND BRIGHT
After location, good light is the one thing every buyer says they want in a home. Clean the windows, take down the drapes, change the lampshades or lighting, increase the wattage of your light bulbs, and prune the bushes outside to let in sunshine.

Daniela Zambon thought long and hard about where she’d like to establish her periodontal practice. In the end, Mansfield won hands-down. And she couldn’t be happier that it did. “Getting married and moving to the United States and choosing Texas to start our family and operate my practice was the greatest decision of my life,” she said. “It wasn’t easy. I had to go back to school and basically start over. But the personal and professional growth involved in doing so was phenomenal. I love coming to work every day and offering my patients personalized, life-changing oral healthcare.” A periodontist since 1995, Daniela always knew she’d work in the medical field in some capacity. “My favorite subject growing up was science. I loved biology,” she said. “My uncle was a dentist and I found his work fascinating.” In addition to her practice, Dr. Zambon has taught periodontics for over 20 years. She is board-certified by the American Board of Periodontology and has

She’s a frequent guest lecturer before state, national, and international dental societies and organizations on periodontics and dental implants. She’s a published author of periodontal articles and has served on the Southwest Society of Periodontists committee since 2007. When not on the job, Dr. Zambon enjoys attending the Dallas Opera and Colorado skiing trips with her family. “I have a wonderful husband who has always supported me in everything,” she said. “Feeling his love daily gives me power to continue in work and life. Watching my boys grow has been the greatest blessing of my life. It’s my goal to raise my sons as good citizens and good human beings and to continue to grow my practice and serve my patients.” Zambon Perio Dental Implants serves patients from Mansfield, Waxahachie, Midlothian, Arlington, Grand Prairie, Cedar Hill. and elsewhere. WHAT IS PERIODONTICS? Periodontics is the dental specialty focused on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease and other conditions that affect the gums and soft tissues of the mouth. Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is an infection caused by bacteria in plaque. When plaque builds up on the teeth, the bacteria irritate and inflame the gum tissues. If this condition isn’t treated in the early stage, called gingivitis, it can develop into periodontitis, a more advanced stage of gum disease. Gingivitis can usually be controlled and even reversed with additional professional cleanings and improved at-home oral care. Periodontitis, however, generally requires more involved, frequent treatment. Periodontists also place dental implants which requires specialized, advanced training.

MYTHS ABOUT TESTOSTERONE IN Women
P
atients come to the Institute for Hormonal Balance to feel better. They search the internet for treatments for the symptoms they’re experiencing or maybe hear from their friends who’s tried BioTE hormone therapy and seen amazing, life-changing results. A lot of women in their 30s think the symptoms they’re experiencing such as night sweats, fatigue, irritability, and weight gain are associated with early menopause. But testosterone starts decreasing in women long before estrogen does. Often women don’t realize they produce testosterone and estrogen, and that testosterone depletes in the late 20s and early 30s. This loss of testosterone results in
42
significant symptoms such as fatigue, decreased libido, brain fog, and mood changes. When patients come to see me, it’s important for me to dispel some of the myths about testosterone in women.
MYTH #1
Testosterone is only Helpful in Women to Increase Libido Many people think “hormone optimization” is equal to “libido enhancement” ONLY. However, testosterone’s role in women exceeds far beyond libido. There are testosterone receptors throughout the body which result in several helpful effects, including enhanced mood, better energy,
Balancing hormones can help with sex drive in many patients, but the picture is much larger. Optimal hormone levels especially testosterone can help with quality of life in patients by increasing energy, enhancing mood, and providing protection to the bones, brain, and heart. It’s imperative to dispel these common myths that may deter patients from seeking treatment which could be incredibly beneficial to their everyday lives. MYTH #3
Testosterone Causes Aggression Testosterone actually decreases anxiety, irritability, and aggression. Anabolic steroids can contribute to rage and aggression, but testosterone treatment reduces these symptoms.
MYTH #4
Testosterone Causes Hair Loss. The cause of hair loss is often difficult to determine, because it’s a multifactorial, genetically-influenced process. What this means is that hair loss can be caused by multiple things all at once. Contributors to hair loss include nutritional deficiencies, genetics, thyroid imbalance, insulin resistance, obesity, age, alcohol use, and some medications.
MYTH #5
Testosterone Causes Hoarseness and Voice Changes.
BY MANDY COTTEN DNP, APRN, FNP-C
cognitive clarity, and reduction in anxiety and depression. Testosterone also helps bones become stronger, reverses the effects of osteoporosis and osteopenia, improves blood flow to the brain and the heart, and decreases inflammatory processes in the body.
MYTH #2
Testosterone May Increase the Risk of Breast Cancer In truth, testosterone decreases the risk of breast cancer. Testosterone decreases estrogen-induced cell growth and stimulation. There have even been studies using testosterone in breast cancer treatment.
Hoarseness in women is most commonly attributable to allergies, GERD, medications, and voice overuse. Anabolic steroids can also contribute to voice changes, but this has not been found with bioidentical hormone pellet use. I think it’s extremely important that patients understand the importance of hormones to their well-being. While patients don’t typically present to my office requesting “protection from disease processes,” they do express the desire to “feel like themselves again.” Balancing hormones can help with sex drive in many patients, but the picture is much larger.

DDEMYSTIFYING N A What genetic testing can help you determine BY DAVID BUICE
Genetic testing involves examining your DNA—the chemical database that carries instructions for your body’s functions— and can reveal changes (mutations) in your genes that may, or may not, cause diseases. The chances of you or your children inheriting some genetic mutation depends on a variety of factors including your parents’ genes, your genes, the disease itself, and mathematical odds.
WHY TEST?
Genetic testing plays a vital role in determining the risk of developing certain diseases as well as determining future treatment, if any. The procedure itself is relatively simple, usually done with a sample of blood, saliva, or tissue, and you might undergo genetic testing either at home or in a medical office in order to: • Diagnose a disease • Determine the cause of a disease • Determine treatment options for a disease • Determine your risk of getting a disease that might be prevented
• Determine the risk of passing a disease on to your children • Screen your embryo, fetus, or baby
TEST RESULTS
These are some of the things you need to know about test results.
• A positive test result does not mean you will definitely get a particular disease. It may just tell you that you have a certain genetic mutation and an increased risk for the disease. For example, having a BRACA1 or BRACA2 gene means you’re at a high risk for breast cancer, but it doesn’t mean with certainty you’ll get cancer. In some cases, lifestyle changes may reduce your chances of developing a disease.
• A negative result does not guarantee you won’t get a disease. Many cancers, unfortunately, don’t have a genetic component. Only about onethird of people with breast or colon cancer have a family history, meaning that many people get these cancers without inheriting a gene for it. • Some tests have inconclusive results. Everyone has gene variations, and sometimes it’s difficult to tell the difference between a disease-causing gene and a harmless variation. Whatever the test outcome, talk with your doctor or genetic counselor about your questions and concerns. They can help you understand what the results mean for you and your family.

THE SCIENCE OF STROKES Understanding the mechanics of a silent health crisis
BY DAVID BUICE
Stated simply, a stroke occurs when the blood supply to your brain is interrupted or reduced. This occurrence deprives your brain of blood and nutrients, leaving it unable to function correctly. The CDC estimates that about 6.5 million adults in the United States have had a stroke, and it is the fifth leading cause of death in this country. Things become more complicated when you consider the various types of strokes.
ISCHEMIC STROKES This type makes up about 85 percent of strokes, and occurs when arteries to your brain become narrowed or blocked, leading to severely reduced blood flow. The most common ischemic strokes include: • Thrombotic stroke – These occur when a blood clot (thrombus) forms in one of the arteries supplying blood to the brain, which may be caused by fatty deposits (plaque) in the arteries causing reduced blood flow (atherosclerosis). • Embolic stroke – This type of stroke happens when a blood clot (embolus) or other debris forms away from the brain, often in the heart, and is carried by the bloodstream to the arteries in your brain.
HEMORRHAGIC STROKES These occur when a blood
46
vessel in your brain leaks or ruptures. These can be caused by high blood pressure (hypertension), overtreatment with anticoagulants, and weak spots in your blood vessel walls (aneurysms). Basically, there are two types of hemorrhagic strokes. • Intracerebral hemorrhage – This stroke is caused by a blood vessel in the brain bursting, spilling blood into surrounding brain tissue and damaging brain cells. Brain cells beyond the leak are also damaged when deprived of blood. • Subarachnoid hemorrhage – This stroke is commonly caused by the bursting of an aneurysm on an artery on or near the surface of the brain, often accompanied by a sudden, severe headache. Blood vessels in the brain may also widen and contract erratically, limiting blood flow and inflicting further brain damage.
TRANSIENT ISCHEMIC ATTACK (TIA) Often called a mini-stroke, a TIA occurs when a clot or debris temporarily blocks blood flow to part of your brain. The symptoms—vision changes, slurred speech, balance issues, tingling, and dizziness, among others—often clear within about five minutes, but you should get immediate medical treatment as a TIA puts you at risk for a full-blown stroke.
WHAT IS PERIPHERAL ARTERIAL DISEASE? Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) is a condition characterized by the narrowing of a person’s arteries – the blood vessels that carry blood from the heart to the rest of the body.
2016, 2017
SOME POSSIBLE SYMPTOMS OF PAD • Numbness, tingling or pain in the legs • Burning or aching in the feet or toes while resting • A sore on the leg or foot that won’t heal • One or both legs or feet feeling cold or changing color • Difficulty in finding a pulse in the leg or foot • Loss of hair on the legs • Impotence
LET PERSEVERANCE FINISH ITS WORK SO THAT YOU MAY BE MATURE AND COMPLETE, NOT LACKING ANYTHING.
Because people with PAD have an increased risk of heart attack and stroke, The American Heart Association encourages people at risk to be screened to ensure early diagnosis and treatment.

Noninvasive body sculpting treatments to reduce unwanted fat BY ANNETTE BROOKS
The body fat battle is never-ending for most of us. No matter how religiously you stick to a diet, how hard you hit the gym, or how many hot yoga classes you attend, fat can stubbornly remain in undesirable places. Luckily, there have been major breakthroughs in noninvasive fat reduction treatments that eliminate unwanted body fat without surgery or injections. But there are some treatment options that use different types of technology to target and eliminate unwanted fat cells and involve little to no downtime. SculpSure is one of the newest noninvasive fat reducing and body contouring laser technologies on the market that targets the abdomen, flanks, back, and inner and outer thighs. In as little as a 25 minute session, SculpSure
48
permanently destroys fat cells with heat while leaving the skin’s surface and other tissues unharmed. Over time, your body naturally eliminates the destroyed fat cells. Results are seen as soon as six weeks after initial treatment, with further improvement continuing during the following six weeks.
CoolSculpting uses controlled cooling to destroy fat cells without affecting surrounding tissues. Once the treated fat cells are frozen, they die and are naturally processed and eliminated from the body. CoolSculpting is used to treat visible body fat bulges in the thighs, abdomen, and flanks, along with bra fat, back fat, underneath the buttocks, and the upper arm. You may start to see changes in as quickly as
WHAT’S THE NEXT STEP?
The best way to make a choice between these or other noninvasive fat reduction treatments is to schedule a consultation with medical professionals who are experienced in performing noninvasive body contouring procedures. They can walk you through your options during a personalized consultation and help you determine which might be the best fit for you. And remember, technology is only as good as the person using it. There’s no substitute for experience and expertise with a proven track record.
three weeks after your treatment. The most dramatic results are typically seen after two to three months. TruSculpt 3D uses controlled radiofrequency (RF) technology to heat up and destroy unwanted fat on the hips, thighs, buttocks, and abdomen. Treatment typically lasts around an hour, and several problem areas can be treated with TruSculpt. Most patients require one to two treatments to see noticeable results. TruSculpt 3D involves zero downtime. You can return to your usual activities immediately after your treatment. Vanquish also uses radio frequency to heat and destroy fat cells. One of the ways Vanquish differs from TruSculpt is that the device is positioned around the patient to deliver energy into areas of stubborn fat. It never comes in contact with your skin. Although most commonly used around the abdomen to reduce the circumference of the waist, it can now also be applied on the inner and outer thighs, bra line, back, and arms. Your body will naturally repair the treated area and permanently excrete dead fat cells. UltraShape does not rely on heat or cold to destroy fat cells. Instead, it delivers ultrasound energy directly into stubborn fat below the skin’s surface. The ultrasound pulses rupture fat cell membranes while leaving the surrounding skin, nerves, and blood vessels unaffected. Because there is no downtime associated with UltraShape, you can resume normal activities right away. And unlike some fat-reduction procedures that use heat or freeze fat, UltraShape is virtually painless. Zerona uses cold laser technology to eliminate unwanted fat. Zerona, which never comes in contact with your skin, targets superficial fat cells with low-level laser stimulation, disrupting the cell membrane and causing the cellular contents of these fat cells to be released. Sessions are virtually painless. The laser is directed to the targeted area while you lay on the treatment table. Treatment areas generally include a combination of the waist, hips, thighs, arms, chest, knees, ankles, and back or bra fat. The minimum suggested treatment period is two weeks, with three full sessions each week.

5 Minute SUMMER MAKEUP
Summer is a time to simplify. Forgo the heavy, ingredients-laden meals of winter for simple salads and garden-fresh veggies. Forget the layers, boots, and scarves in lieu of cotton dresses and sandals. Your morning makeup routine should be simplified too, with natural-looking dewy skin and natural-looking shades on eyes and lips. • Tinted Moisturizer—Kick heavy foundation to the curb and let more of your natural skin show through with a tinted moisturizer, such as Olay Total Effects. Start with less than you think you’ll need and only add if you need to, so your skin still looks dewy and not as covered. • Serum-based Concealer—If you have uneven spots, follow with a serum-based concealer such as Bare Minerals. Dot it on lightly, under eyes, around the nose, on any blemishes, and anywhere you need a bit of extra coverage. • Cheek Gel—Add a bit of color to brighten your face. Try Chubby Stick Cheek Colour Balm by Clinique applied to the apple of your cheek. And remember, less is more. • Brow Gel—Tame those summer eyebrows with a brow gel such as Bobbi Brown Eyebrow Gel. Let it sit, while you do the next three steps, before you pencil in your brows. • Eyelash Curler—Not everyone needs an eyelash curler, but if you do, Shu Uemura on each eye for about 10 seconds
can get your lashes up and out, before you apply your mascara for bigger, brighter eyes. • Mascara—Chances are you already have a mascara you love. Just remember to keep it light and natural looking during summer, never clumpy and thick. • Eyeliner—Some women prefer an eyeliner pencil but a liquid applicator such as Lancome Artliner gives you good control for a subtle look. Create a dotted line between lashes at the base then connected the dots for a line that makes your eyes pop. • Brow Pencil—Now you’re ready to pencil in your brows. Remember to begin with less and keep it subtle. You can always darken, if you need to. • Lipcolor—Here’s a great summer makeup tip. Before applying your lipstick, apply a salve such as Aquaphor or a chapstick you like. Then your lips stay dewy and your lipstick goes on more like a stain than a heavy coat of color.
Remember, summer makeup shouldn’t cover your skin or mask your natural look. It should enhance it.

MID-YEAR MOMENT Revitalize by refreshing your lapsed workout resolution BY MIMI GREENWOOD KNIGHT
In a perfect world, we’d all have nailed our New Year’s resolutions. I’d be 15 pounds lighter. My sister-in-law would’ve potty trained her three-year-old. And my niece would be pulling off a perfect two-minute plank. But here in the real world, life happens. If your best intentions for a regular workout schedule have gone awry since the new year, try these tips for getting back on track. Once you’re back in your routine and working out again, your body, brain, and waistline will thank you.
FIRST, FORGIVE
If you’ve wimped out on your gym time because of commitments, illness, or any other reason, forgive yourself and (as that magnet on my fridge reminds me daily) do the next right thing.
MAKE A PLAN AND WRITE IT DOWN
There’s something about writing a resolution down that makes it more official. Tell yourself how many times you’ll go to the gym each week and write it on your calendar (cell phone, bathroom mirror, dashboard, whatever works).
FIND A PARTNER
An accountability partner can help you stay on track. Find someone with similar goals and agree to meet at the gym,
52
walk the neighborhood, or just check in with each other periodically, to make sure you’re both sticking with the program.
DEFINE YOUR GOALS
What’s your reason for working out? Are you trying to lose weight? Train for a marathon? Or just be healthier and live longer? Knowing why you’re doing what you’re doing can help you stick to your guns.
HAVE REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS
You know what’s reasonable for you—and what’s not. Is telling yourself you’ll work out every single day realistic? How about three times a week? Know what your schedule, commitments, and fitness level will allow.
START SLOWLY
If you’ve been away from your workout routine for weeks or months, don’t expect to jump right back in where you left off. Doing so could lead to injury or super sore muscles, either of which might be an excuse to quit again.
PUT A CARROT ON THAT STICK
Consider a reward—or a series of rewards—you can give yourself when you persist. That can be anything from a new bikini or a weekend away to a post-workout glass of wine.

ADVENTURE “What’s the place we’re staying at called again?” I turned down the radio as the convertible hugged the road. “The Cottages at Cabot Cove,” my mother replied from the driver’s seat, glancing at me through her tinted aviators. “Take a look at the photos, you’re going to love it.” Eight hours was a long drive, but just doable enough to get through with some sanity intact. That’s one perk of living in northern New Jersey—New England is only a day’s drive away. It was the summer of 2017, and my mom and I were headed out on a road trip to Maine. A big part of our expedition was an impending “mother-daughter lobster crawl.” My mom, of course, was ecstatic over our little escapade. Had I been younger, I probably would have turned her down. In fact, as an angsty teenager, I once declined her proposition to spend a week in Paris, choosing instead to spend my last summer in high school hanging out with my friends. Ouch. But Maine called to me. I had never been to the Pine Tree State, replete with craggy shoreline, knowing it only as Stephen King’s stomping ground (I brought my classic Pet Sematary shirt just for the occasion of driving by his house). The cottages in Kennebunkport, where we were staying, drew me further in. The photos I saw online were the epitome of picturesque. And of course there was to be lobster, a delicacy I seldom had the opportunity to enjoy. The long haul up the Atlantic coast went by smoothly as we cruised in my mom’s favored two-seater. I’ll admit, my teenage self would have given her major points for switching between indie rock and 80s hits stations, with some episodes of my favorite sci-fi podcast served up in between as an excellent palate cleanser. It was well past dusk when we turned into a white gravel driveway that crunched under the tires— we had arrived. Even in the dim light, the cul-de-sac looked like a nest of fairy houses tucked away on the cove. I was absolutely in love. The place we were to stay in was named, fittingly enough, Sleepy Hollow Cottage.

as I peeled my hands off the sticky wooden table at the mom-and-pop seafood shack. One bite into that lobster roll, however, was enough to get me hooked. It was then that we decided to keep a running score of the best lobster rolls we got our hands on. Our mother-daughter lobster crawl had begun. Never before had I consumed so much lobster in such a single week, and the memory sits precious with me. But this getaway was much more than a culinary adventure. It was about spending time with my mom, and on this trip she continued to encourage me and coax the best out of me, something I have realized I routinely take for granted. Ever the patron of the arts, she was elated to buy me my first student-grade watercolor set at a local shop in Portland near the Art Institute. Back at the cottage, as we munched each morning on the boxed breakfast of pastries left on the front porch, she simply leaned back in an Adirondack chair and enjoyed the scenery as I painted the flowers, smiling at me every so often. One morning after breakfast, I ambled over to the dock of the cozy cove to check out the free kayak rentals. When the morning tide came in, I made it my mission to take one for a spin. “Are you sure you don’t want to come with me?” I asked my mom. I felt a little bad leaving her out. Her ankle has never been the same since an accident involving icy stairs. She peered down at me from her seat on the dock and shook her head. “You go ahead, I’m more than happy watching you. I just love seeing you have fun.”
The long weekend at the cove was filled with new experiences. The first piece of sage advice my mother doled out was about local cuisine. While I was just as happy to sink my teeth into a juicy, steamed lobster asis, I soon learned of a special New England treat.
As I paddled my way out, I couldn’t help but look over my shoulder to see her growing smaller in the distance. Now a speck on the horizon, I could still feel her watchful presence. I realized it was a touching metaphor. No matter what path I choose and however far away I’ll be, my mom will always be there, giving her support. She’s been there for me throughout my entire life, selfless as ever, even when it means staying landlocked while I embark on new voyages.
“Lobster with a little bit of mayo on a bun,” she explained to me after ordering two lobster rolls. I had always thought of lobster as a haute cuisine front runner—or at least had gleaned it from movies—but it didn’t seem like that could be further from the truth
I headed into Maine expecting lobster and the smell of the sea, but returned with a newly understood respect for all my mother has done. I can’t wait until our next trip together, and am looking forward to all I’ll discover along the way.
Mightier than the waves of the sea is His love for you

CUISINE
PHOTOS AND RECIPES BY MEGHAN BASSETT
Incorporating the flavors of Asian cuisine in your own kitchen can be a little intimidating at first. But this month we’ll help you discover how to reinterpret a few everyday dishes with some unique twists that you and your family will love. Whether you are hosting a party or planning an easy weeknight meal, we hope we can open your eyes to a whole new world of flavor. TIPS & TRICKS You can easily make the Banh Mi Pasta vegetarian by substituting the ground pork for crispy tofu pieces. Simply fold them in when you mix the noodles into the sauce!
BANH MI NOODLES 1 pound ground pork 1 inch piece of ginger, peeled and minced 4 garlic cloves, minced 1 cucumber, peeled and thinly sliced into strips 1 bell pepper, seeded and stemmed, thinly sliced into strips 2 carrots, shredded 1 tablespoon fish sauce ½ tablespoon honey 2 tablespoons sriracha 2½ tablespoons rice vinegar 1 teaspoon sesame oil 15 ounces coconut milk Juice of 1 lime About 1 pound rice noodles, fresh or dried Chopped cilantro Sesame seeds Green onions Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil over high heat. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the ground pork. Once cooked through, remove from pan and set aside. To the same pan, add garlic and ginger. Reduce heat to medium and cook for approximately 1 to 2 minutes. Add bell pepper and cucumber, and cook for approximately 3 to 5 minutes. At this time, add the rice noodles to the pot of boiling water and cook briefly according to directions on the package, then rinse in cold water. When the bell peppers are fairly tender, add carrots, fish sauce, honey, sriracha, rice vinegar, sesame oil, lime juice, and coconut milk to the skillet. Cook for an additional 7 minutes until the sauce is slightly thickened. Add the cooked pork and cooked rice noodles to the skillet. Stir to combine and heat through. Serve immediately. Garnish with cilantro, green onion, and sesame seeds.

FEATURE
A TRIBUTE TO MOTHER’S DAY
72
Honoring your mom while remembering the holiday’s origins BY NATALIE GOULD TOMKO
Before there were flowers and brunch reservations and bracelets on the fourth Sunday in Lent, there were women like Ann Reeves Jarvis and Julia Ward Howe who wanted to find a way to join women together in a unified effort following the Civil War. Once a year women in cities like New York, Philadelphia, Chicago and Boston gathered together to listen to sermons, prayers, and hymns to promote peace. Anna Jarvis, Ann’s daughter now largely known as the mother of Mother’s Day, followed in her mother’s footsteps. She championed the idea of a day where children would spend a special day with their mother, or the mother figure in their lives, and let her know how incredible she is. These were the nascent days of our modern Mother’s Day. And while the holiday might look a little different now than it did in the late 1800s, we still have a beautiful opportunity to honor and appreciate the mother figures in our own lives. Here are a few ideas to make your mother feel special while paying homage to the original idea behind the holiday.
1. BRUNCH AT HOME Try cooking a cozy brunch at home. Make pajamas mandatory to keep it lowkey and casual. Prepare-ahead recipes like baked French toast, sausage and egg bakes, cinnamon rolls, and breakfast stratas are great for spending less time in the kitchen and more time loving on your mama.
2. GIVE AN EXPERIENCE INSTEAD OF A GIFT Consider foregoing traditional gifts in favor of unforgettable experiences as a family. This could mean attending a special show or event, spending a weekend away in a nearby town, or even something adventurous like indoor skydiving. These experiences help create memories that can last a lifetime.
3. PLANT HER A MOTHER’S DAY GARDEN Instead of flowers that don’t last that long, take a trip to the local nursery to pick out seeds or plants of some of her favorite flowers. Wrap them up in a box, and when she opens it, tell her that you and she will spend the afternoon together planting her new Mother’s Day bouquet garden. Every time she looks out her window she’ll be reminded of your thoughtful gift and a wonderful Mother’s Day outdoors.
