isn’t He? This month marks two years of marriage for my husband and me. Between the two of us, we’d given the single life 26 years of our time. I’d like to give credit to our parents, as I think about the years they spent praying on our behalf for a Godly spouse. I love regularly and intentionally recalling the goodness of our God and His faithfulness in my life. Reflecting not on the negative within our years alone, but rather on the conversations with God during that time, drawing nearer to Him, hearing His voice, and feeling His comfort and His never-ending faithfulness to us. The scriptures that jumped off the pages for me throughout that season were Psalm 30:11, “You turned my mourning into dancing; you clothed me with joy”, Psalm 30:5, “Though sorrow may last for a night, joy comes in the morning”, and Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not harm you; plans to give you a hope and a future”. If you’re in a dry season of life, know that it’s just that—a season. Be encouraged and stay the course. “God is for you, not against you.” Romans 8:31

GRAND PRAIRIE

Technology has certainly made parts our lives easier, giving us access to information and the ability to connect with people around the globe. But sometimes that technology – phones, tablets and game consoles – keep us from connecting with those closest. That’s why Mansfield Parks & Recreation has begun a campaign to encourage residents to “check in” at one of our award-winning parks and to enjoy some “screen-free” time together as a family. The department’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/MansfieldTxParks) recently expanded to include location pages for all our parks and recreation facilities, allowing users to check in at these locations and share that information with friends and family. Once at the park, families are urged to unplug and enjoy the amenities each one has to offer. Mansfield parks have twice been named the best in Texas. It’s one of the many reasons cited by new residents as a key to the excellent quality of life the city offers. This summer, take drive or a walk to one of our beautiful parks, check in on social media then turn off the phone and connect with nature and your family. You won’t be sorry.

Dirt is flying all over Grand Prairie, as retail centers, restaurants, hotels and apartments are going up north to south. Here is a sneak peek at what is underway: • Chick-fil-A, El Pollo Loco, Starbucks and Chipotle will open around Walmart on State Highway 161 and Pioneer Parkway. • Courtyard by Marriott, Smoothie King, Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches and Jason’s Deli are building on SH 161 between Arkansas and Mayfield. • Potbelly Sandwich Shop, Olive Garden, Ross, Michaels, Ulta, Burlington, Conn’s, Petco, Burkes and Home Goods are opening on the west side of SH 161 between Warrior and Mayfield. • Avilla Heritage, a 120-unit multi-family housing development on Sara Jane and Forum Drive, will feature one-story units with individual backyards. • Building has begun on the 275-unit Prairie Gate Apartments on Fish Creek. • City Council approved Fire House Gastro Park, a unique indoor-outdoor dining experience, on Main Street in historic Fire Station #1.

Summertime and the living’s easy in The American Dream City. Come June and July, we like to slow things down a bit to concentrate on making summer memories with the ones we love. Rather than hopping a plane for some far-flung destination this summer, why not take time to experience all Arlington has to offer. Schedule some fishing, kayaking, and a family picnic at Lake Arlington. Visit one of Arlington’s six outdoor public pools. Catch a concert or movie night at Levitt Pavilion or the new Lot Downtown. Take in some golf or tennis. Then check out all the new Downtown library has to offer. And don’t look now but things are heating up at Texas Live! Located between AT&T Stadium and the future Globe Life Field, this partnership between the Texas Rangers, The Cordish Companies, and City of Arlington will be an exciting, world-class dining, entertainment, and hospitality district featuring 200,000 square feet of dining and entertainment space, a 5,000-capacity outdoor event pavilion called Arlington Backyard, and the flagship Live! by Loews hotel, scheduled to open Summer 2019. Texas Live! is part of a greater $4 billion vision for Arlington’s entertainment district that features the Rangers new $1.1 billion ballpark and the repurposing of Globe Life Park. The project will bring more than 3,000 new jobs and more than 3 million new visitors to The American Dream City, making our amazing city even better.

United Dermatology Associates NEW OFFICE AND NEW TECHNOLOGY FOR A NEW YOU BY MEREDITH KNIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY BY LAUREN MEDEAN LINDSEY HAIR AND MAKEUP BY TERESA CLIFF

Jeannine Hoang is Arlington born and bred, and happy to offer her services to her neighbors and friends. Originally opening her practice as Mansfield Dermatology in 2007, Dr. Hoang had a clear vision of individualized care with an emphasis on patient education and empowerment. Her philosophy was embraced by her patient base, which grew so rapidly that she rebranded her practice as United Dermatology Associates and began adding locations in Mansfield, Arlington, Burleson, and Flower Mound. NEWEST UNITED DERMATOLOGY LOCATION Now a good thing has gotten even better with a new state-of-the-art United Dermatology office located at 130 Regency Parkway in Mansfield. At 10,000 square feet, it’s the archetype of the modern medical practice with 13 patient exam rooms, 7 cutting edge rooms for surgery and

procedures with room to expand offering even more specialized services. Before embarking on this newest office, Dr. Hoang checked with her patients to see what they would like. She included many of their requests in the newest United Dermatology including multiple waiting areas for patients, a private waiting area for

pre-procedure prepping for patients, a large display area for patients to browse exclusive skincare products, and expanded skincare services with more state-of-the-art technology, such as tattoo removal, spa services, and more. FRUIT OF THE VINE

from Self BY LISA JENKINS-MOORE

IT IS FOR FREEDOM THAT CHRIST HAS SET US FREE. STAND FIRM, THEN, AND DO NOT LET YOURSELVES BE BURDENED AGAIN BY A YOKE OF SLAVERY (GALATIANS 5:1, NIV)

24

In July, we celebrate the freedom of the United States from Great Britain centuries ago. As our freedom has evolved over the years, it seems in some areas we are more bound than ever. While technology offers the world at our fingertips and endless information to devour, it also has inspired a new addiction—we are constantly plugged in. As I consider my own life and lack of discipline in this area, I am acutely aware of several other areas in dire need of alteration. Below I share my recent journey and the revelation helping me overcome addiction; I hope you too will find freedom. The year 2017 was a difficult one for our family. We experienced loss—physical and financial—which challenged us emotionally. We moved from our modern suburban home of five years to a rambling country home on three acres that hadn’t been occupied in over fifteen years. After twelve months of renovation, we do have our dream home, but it was a long, laborious process that took a toll on my mental health. I’ve always had a strong constitution and have approached things more logically than emotionally, but I crashed in the last eighteen months. Though I continued to attend church and Bible study groups, in the evening all I wanted to do was close myself in my bedroom, watch Netflix, and eat candy—lots and lots of candy. I’ve always had a sugar fetish, but I took it to the extreme. Even though I’ve been blessed with good genetics and a fairly high metabolism, I managed to gain over ten pounds in a few short weeks. I was emotionally spent, physically fatigued, and spiritually drained, and I berated myself daily for living short of my potential and sending my body to an early grave. In April, a ladies group I co-lead with a dear friend decided on a new book study from author Timothy Jorgensen. The title, Spirit Life Training, as well as the back cover bullet points, intrigued us. Though simply written and easy to follow, the content is life-changing revelation for those willing to make the necessary changes. As most of us know, we are three-part beings: body, soul, and spirit. For as long as I can remember, I’ve focused on getting my spirit healthy, thinking that once I did, my body and soul would naturally follow. According to Jorgensen, the opposite is true. Until we can control our bodies, our souls and spirits will never be fully healthy and operational. Paul was one of the first to point this out in the Scripture “we must beat our body and make it our slave” (I Cor. 9:27). If our lives are in proper alignment, our spirits will be king, our souls the servant, and our

bodies our slaves. My body should have no say and no authority. Though it may have an opinion (“I’m too tired to get out of bed,” “I’m too lazy to exercise,” “I’ll eat as much candy as I want”), our spirit is to lord over our bodies, denying them everything except that which is beneficial. Once I realized that physical exercise and abstinence from bad foods was actually spiritual warfare, I was all in. Jorgensen explains, “The devil considers every act of personal discipline as an act of war against him.” You see, the enemy’s primary objective is to steal, kill, and destroy. If he can get your body to rule, your soul to follow, and your spirit to submit, your life will never be effective for the Kingdom of God. After I began to speak to my body and make it comply, my soul was next. Consisting of the mind, will, emotions, intellect, and memory, the soul must also take direction from the spirit. I tell my soul to “rejoice” and use my body to trick my mind by smiling. Jorgensen tells us the first thing we should do with our emotions is doubt them. Our emotions cannot always be trusted. They were given to us to fully experience and express the glory of God, but if they aren’t ruled by our spirit, they cause distraction and turmoil. When our lives are properly aligned with God’s will, “our spirits will be holy, our souls will be happy, and our bodies will be healthy.” Holy. Happy. Healthy. The summation of what so many of us are longing to attain, yet find ourselves continually falling short. Be encouraged by my journey and know so many believers struggle—what you see on the outside is not always an adequate reflection of the inside. Return your spirit to its rightful throne; subject your soul and enslave your body. Freedom from self is the only route to true freedom. Lisa is a freelance writer and speaker. NOTES ON PREPARING FOR THE RETURN TO THE CLASSROOM BY MIMI GREENWOOD KNIGHT

KEEPING IT CLEAN

Your child will be exposed to a lot of wonderful things this school year. Unfortunately, they’ll also be subject to an army of germs in the classroom, cafeteria, on the school bus, in crowded hallways, and outside. Give your child a fighting chance against germs this year.

school-age kids need more sleep than they’re getting. Based on research conducted by Stanford University, the NSF recommends schoolchildren between the ages of 5 and 10 get 10 to 11 hours of sleep a night, while high schoolers still need 8 to 9 hours. Because the things that are taught during the day need to be “consolidated during sleep,” it’s up to parents to establish and enforce a reasonable bedtime.

• Educate your child about the importance of cleaning their hands immediately after a sneeze or cough and after they use the restroom.

DON’T KNOCK HOMEWORK

• Send in hand wipes or foaming hand sanitizer to your child’s teacher. • Keep your child home from school any time they’re sick. • Routinely wipe down water bottles, lunch boxes, and other gear that travels back and forth with your child to school. • Pack your child’s backpack or lunchbox everyday with disposable tissues and wipes. You can’t protect your child from every germ galivanting around their school. But you can minimize their exposure with a little diligence and education.

HOW MUCH SLEEP DO SCHOOL KIDS NEED?

According to the National Sleep Foundation, most

28

We know your kids are busy. Between sports practice, dance class, school clubs, and other extracurricular stuff, it can be hard to find time for homework. But according to the National Education Association, homework is important. NEA research shows that children who spend more time on regularly assigned, meaningful homework, do better in school. Teachers use homework to • help students understand and review the work that’s been covered in class, • see whether students understand a particular lesson, • and help students practice finding and using more information on a subject themselves. Homework is also the link between school and home to keep parents informed about what kids are studying.

PRAY FOR YOUR CHILD’S SCHOOL Do you pray for your child’s school? You should. We asked some of the folks who spend their days making school the best place it can be, “How can your students’ families pray for the school?” Here’s what they said.

• “Pray for your child’s teacher to have energy to keep things interesting and to find the time to have a relationship with each student.” Liz, high school teacher (20 years) • “Pray for strength to leave my own aches and pains at home so I can give my best to my class and for my students to have teachable spirits.” Pat, first grade teacher (25 years) • “Pray for your child’s bus driver to have concentration as they drive. We deal with a lot of things at once—traffic jams, mechanical failures, inconsiderate drivers, weather conditions, and rowdy kids.” Carol, bus driver • “Pray that teachers can see in each child the unique value God has placed there and help them to see it in themselves.” Melissa, second grade teacher • “Pray that we can balance our time well between school and home, and at the end of the day, we’ll have something left to give to our own families.” Maggie, elementary school assistant principal • “Pray for your child’s teacher to have good health and wake up feeling the strength to meet the special demands of the students. If they’re having a good day, your child probably will, too.” Paula, high school vocational trainer • “Pray for harmony in the classroom; that the kids can get along and encourage each other, not tear each other down.” Nick, high school English teacher • “Pray for unity in your child’s school. If everyone was of one mind working together, imagine what we could accomplish in the lives of our students.” Sherry, custodian If you’re committed to praying for the workers at your child’s school, why not take a minute to let them know it? While you’re at it, ask them what they’d like you to pray for.

Seasonal Scares

WATCHING OUT FOR THE MOST COMMON SUMMER HEALTH CONCERNS BY DAVID BUICE

Summer is here, and while enjoying your favorite outdoor activities can be a real treat, it’s important to remember that summertime, unfortunately, brings its share of health concerns. Here are a few of the more common ones—and some tips on avoiding them.

32

ERIC WIESER, M.D. SPINAL SURGEON

Dr. Eric Wieser is founder and medical director of the Texas Comprehensive Spine Center at Arlington Orthopedic Associates, a state-of-the-art medical facility with full service spinal care. The focus is on non-surgical treatments for common spinal disorders. Dr. Wieser and Dr. Even along with two Physician Assistants, Trey Lockwood and Ambrosia Willoughby, work with a fine pain management and rehabilitation team. The center offers diagnostic testing including X-rays and MRIs. Electrodiagnostic consultations and diagnostic and therapeutic spinal injections are also available. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons and is a member of the North American Spine Society and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. Dr. Wieser fellowship trained in minimally invasive spine surgery at UCLA Medical Center after completing his residency in orthopedic surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Dr. Wieser frequently gives lectures at national and international spinal meetings and is widely published in spinal literature. He currently serves as Chairman of the Board at Baylor Orthopedic and Spine Hospital in Arlington. His goal is to have each patient fully understand their treatment plan and rehabilitation options. He realizes how neck and back pain can affect your everyday life, and hinder patients from doing the activities they enjoy. Dr. Wieser and his team focus on complete spinal care and each individual patient will receive comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic spinal care at one location. As a physician who prides himself on giving each patient supreme, individual attention, he says, “We treat our patients like we would want to be treated, with respect and attention to detail. Dr. Wieser has been recognized as a Top Doc in D Magazine, Fort Worth Magazine and recently in Texas Monthly. This high level of dedication makes him a SuperDoc in the eyes of our community.

WELLNESS SUNBURN If you’re not careful, that summer sun will burn you, increasing your risk of melanoma, the deadliest skin cancer. That danger can triple after only one sunburn every two years. Wear protective clothing and wide-brimmed hats, avoid the blistering midday sun if at all possible, and even on cloudy days wear sunscreen with an SPF factor of 30.

ASTHMA ATTACKS Smog and air pollution, high pollen levels, and increased mold growth can all cause an increase in asthma attacks. Asthma sufferers should continue taking their daily controller medication and use AirNow.gov to track local air quality.

SWIMMER’S EAR To avoid this common infection, tilt one ear down and wiggle your ear lobe after swimming or showering to help the water drain. Repeat with the other ear. And leave that ear wax alone, as it protects the lining of the ear against infections.

FOOD POISONING Foodborne illnesses are far more common in summer than the rest of the year because the bacteria that cause food poisoning grow faster in hot, humid weather. Keep perishable foods in a refrigerator or cooler, and when the temperature

34

rises above 90°F, don’t leave food out for more than an hour.

DEHYDRATION Dehydration and heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke happen much more frequently in summer than during other parts of the year. Again, avoid exerting yourself during the hottest parts of the day. It’s suggested that you drink eight glasses of water daily, but consult your doctor on fluid consumption if you suffer from congestive heart failure, kidney disease, or liver disease.

LYME DISEASE This malady peaks during the summer when we’re exposed to ticks in the yard and the woods. Symptoms include fever, headache, body aches, rash, and facial paralysis. It can be treated with antibiotics, but left untreated can lead to joint, heart, and nerve damage. To minimize the risk, use a repellant on bare skin that contains 20 percent or more DEET, and one containing the insecticide permethrin on clothing. Also, do a full-body check after coming in from the woods or a bushy area. With just a little caution and preparation, summertime health concerns can be minimized, making summer a healthy and safe time to be outdoors.

A Place in the Sun STAYING SAFE WHILE CATCHING SOME RAYS BY DAVID BUICE

We all love those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer… boating, lounging by the pool, or grilling in the backyard with family and friends. But all the while, that hot Texas sun is beaming down, creating the risk of sunburn and serious damage to your skin and health.

WHAT IS SUNBURN, REALLY?

cells leads to the pain and heat of sunburn.

Sunburn occurs when your skin cells are damaged by too much exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. You can’t feel the sun’s damaging UV rays, and sunburn doesn’t have to be painful, peeling, or blistering. Even if your skin has only just turned pink or red after time in the sun, that’s sunburn.

In contrast, touching a hot object damages skin cells, which causes redness and pain, but your DNA stays the same. A burn from a hot object doesn’t cause mutations in your skin cells.

The sun emits two types of UV rays that damage skin. • UVA penetrates deep into your skin. It mostly ages the skin, but contributes to sunburn. • UVB causes the majority of sunburns.

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE SKIN WHEN YOU GET A SUNBURN? A sunburn may look a lot like the burn you get when you touch a hot object, but it’s very different. A sunburn is a sign that UV rays have mutated the DNA in your skin cells. Your body’s effort to repair these mutated

36

With either kind of burn, your body attempts to repair the damage, but our body’s repair mechanism isn’t perfect. With a sunburn, some of the mutated cells can be left behind. Over time, these abnormal cells may multiply and accumulate more damaging mutations. Years later, this buildup of mutated cells can become skin cancer. Just getting a sunburn once every two years can triple your risk of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. Be safe this summer—and when you’re outdoors, use shade, clothing, and sunscreen to protect yourself from those harmful UV rays.

Could Be Cancer? DETECTION COULD MAKE THE DIFFERENCE BY DAVID BUICE

Most types of skin cancer are caused by too much exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun, or artificial UV sources such as tanning beds. Knowing what they are and how to spot them might help you out down the road, so take a closer look! COMMON TYPES OF SKIN CANCER At least one million Americans are diagnosed with skin cancer yearly, and the three most common types are basal cell cancer, squamous cell cancer, and melanoma.

BASAL CELL CARCINOMA The most common form of skin cancer, it’s unlikely to move to other parts of your body and usually appears as a slow-growing, non-healing lesion. Treatment varies from creams such as fluorouracil or imiquimod to various types of outpatient surgery.

SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA The second most common form of skin cancer, it’s fairly slow growing but can spread to tissues, bones and nearby lymph nodes. Caught early, it’s fairly easy to treat, usually with some form of outpatient surgery. It usually presents as a recurrent scaly bump, a non-healing ulcer, or even a persistent pimple-like sore.

METASTATIC MELANOMA Accounting for only about 1 percent of skin cancers, it causes the large majority of skin cancer deaths. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2018, one American will die from it every hour of every day. Melanoma tumors are usually brown or black, but can also be pink, tan, or even white. In early stages it can sometimes be treated with surgery alone, but advanced cases often require chemotherapy and radiation as well. Dr. Stephanie A. Savory, Assistant Professor of Dermatology at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, says you can use the ABCDE method to detect signs of melanoma. • Asymmetry – One half of a skin lesion does not match the other half. • Border irregularity – The edges are ragged, notched, or blurred. • Color – The pigmentation is not uniform, and shades of tan, brown, and black are present. • Diameter – Any growth in a mole is cause for concern, especially if larger than roughly the size of a pencil eraser. • Evolution – A change in the size, shape, tenderness, surface, characteristics (especially bleeding), or color of a mole. “If you suspect you may have skin cancer,” Dr. Savory urges, “make an appointment with your dermatologist immediately!”

AESTHETICS

OUTSIDE IN External self-esteem boosters that’ll make you feel good inside too BY AUDREY ASHE

Self-esteem is something we all deal with—and many of us have likely struggled with it at some point in our lives. How we feel about ourselves can greatly impact our quality of life, for better or for worse. Not to sound like one of those inspirational seminars, but self-esteem is something that has to come from within, and there is no external substitute for learning to accept and love yourself for who you are. However, if you find yourself in a bit of a slump, there are a few remedies that might get you feeling back on track.

AESTHETICS Updating your wardrobe is a tried and true way to take you from zero to hero, but simply buying more for the sake of spending might leave you feeling empty. A cluttered closet symbolizes an equally cluttered mind, and it may be time to strike a balance between old and new pieces. Try some decluttering and donating. Don’t hold onto items that are worn out, don’t fit, or aren’t your style anymore just for old time’s sake. As for finding fresh outfits, quality over quantity is a good rule to live by. Find a few pieces that make you feel special and are versatile enough to liven up any existing outfits you already have. Sign up for a yoga class. There is a wide range of types and levels, so you’re bound to find a good fit even if you’re not the biggest fan of exercise. Yoga is a meditative practice, and routinely participating can give your brain some much needed “me time” away from the stresses of daily life. Not only can it refresh your mind, stretching and awakening your muscles may help give you an energy boost and liven your overall mood. And the muscle tone that comes with regular yoga practice will leave you feeling more confident in your skin.

Hair days, good and bad, have a direct effect on self-esteem, and your hair is one part of your appearance you have relatively straightforward control over. The great news is that there are tons of ways to update your ‘do! If your long locks feel like a nuisance and seem to be more trouble than they’re worth, a shorter hairstyle may be a breath of fresh air. On the flip side, if you’re trying to grow out a mane mermaids would be jealous of, pamper it a bit with a moisturizing and strengthening hair mask. You can buy one prepackaged at a beauty supply store or make your own with key ingredients like coconut oil.

POOL PLACE

An at-home oasis no further than your back yard

Gone are the days when the only option for a little summertime dip was to stroll down to the neighborhood pool and battle for a place to set your towel. These days it’s not at all uncommon to have a pool installed in your own backyard—and there’s nothing quite like some cool water and outdoor pool parties just a few feet from the door. Your local pool installation pros can take a look at your space and help you figure out what’ll be the best fit. But the opportunities are endless!

62

Depending on your space, you might even be able to add a little diving board like these homeowners, who had their more traditionally shaped pool built with a sloped bottom for extra depth on the end.

This homeowner pairs an outdoor conversation space with a ledge-set angular pool and hanging lights, perfect for nice views and relaxation while you soak. Incorporating round edges and some tropical-feeling foliage, this pool has a section finished with rock for a natural feel and a good place to sunbathe.

ADVENTURE

SUMMER IN MONTRÉAL Five reasons to get away BY ANNETTE BROOKS

As summer whips up to a sweltering frenzy in the Lone Star state, you could be in Montréal, Canada in less than four hours flying time—where average summer daytime temperatures range in the 70s. More than a welcomed respite from the Texas heat, Montréal is a brilliant, multicultural gem that celebrates the art of life. Canadian, but with a European flair that reaches beyond its first language of French, this stunning, modern city effortlessly combines historic charm with layers of the Québécois culture. TIME TRAVEL IN OLD MONTRÉAL AND OLD PORT

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

Old Montréal (Vieux-Montréal), with its French colonial history dating back to the 16th century, will make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Narrow cobblestone streets lined with beautiful shopfronts and bistros make it a popular tourist destination. Plan a few stops, such as the magnificent Notre Dame Basilica built in 1656, but don’t get too hung up on an itinerary. Instead, adopt a leisurely pace. Embrace the good life, Montréal style. Meander along the streets, browse through the shops, enjoy a break, and people-watch at a sidewalk café.

With its melting pot of cultures, Montréal serves up cuisine from around the globe while also honoring traditional recipes handed down among local families for generations. And there’s plenty of inventive new Québec cuisine. With so many options, a food tour is an easy way to experience, taste, and learn about Montréal’s flavorful food scene. Check out walking food tours through the best neighborhoods and local restaurants at LocalFoodTours.com/Montreal.

Old Port of Montréal, which stretches along the Saint Lawrence River, is a reminder of Montréal’s bygone industrial history. The 30 foot tall iconic Farine Five Roses sign has been a fixture of the city skyline since the late 1940s. Silo Numéro 5, built in 1885, looms over Old Port. Seamlessly blending old with new—as Montréal does so graciously throughout the city—Old Port also features modern-day attractions. The Montréal Science Centre on the King Edward Pier, for example, is a fun, whimsical museum where kids and adults will be entertained by a wide range of interactive exhibitions.

64

In the mood for fine dining par excellence featuring farm-fresh ingredients? Restaurant Toqué! with Québécois dishes and a seven-course dinner tasting menu is a superb way to become acquainted with the city’s food scene. For brunch, Olive and Gourmando is a favorite with its silky housemade ricotta and distinctive Europe meets Montréal vibe. And in the summertime, outdoor patios and rooftop spots come alive. Known as terrasses by locals, they can take the form of a posh bistro, casual pub, or place for thirstquenching libations and merriment.

ADVENTURE POUTINE Then there’s poutine, deserving of a mention all its own. The unofficial national dish of Québec is a rich combination of fries, gravy, and cheese curds. Many locals say La Banquise has some of the best poutine in town, with an incredible meat selection including chicken, sausages, and even smoked meat. Or try Poutineville, where you can choose your kind of potatoes, gravy sauce, cheese, and toppings.

FESTIVALS GALORE With over 100 festivals a year, Montréal knows how to throw a party. In summertime, the Place des Festivals primes its 235 water jets for weeks of free concerts, events, and artistic happenings. Love comedy? Check out the Just for Laughs Festival, which runs from July 14 to July 29 this year. In August, street fairs are abundant and big screens pop up around town in the name of movie nights under the stars. The Montréal International Fireworks Competition will shower the skies every Saturday evening from July 7 to August 8 this year. The largest, most prestigious pyrotechnics competition of its kind in the world is complete with spectacular, 30-minute pyromusical extravaganzas. Music lovers also regularly flock to the internationally acclaimed Montréal Jazz Festival. CUISINE

PHOTOS AND RECIPES BY MEGHAN BASSETT

Instead of defaulting to classic barbecue this Independence Day, consider a few new flavors fresh off the grill. Light and flavorful grilled chicken tacos are the perfect handheld meal—and with a patriotic red, white, and blue fruit salsa on top and a mug of watermelon lemonade on the side, you’ll be set to celebrate in delicious style.

Grilled California Chicken Tacos 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 1 pound skinless, boneless chicken thighs 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon paprika ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 1 teaspoon kosher salt ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 8 corn tortillas, warmed 2 avocados, sliced Queso fresco Thinly sliced red onion Red, white, and blue fruit salsa

(recipe on next page)

Prepare grill for medium-high heat. Toss chicken with garlic, cumin, paprika, cayenne, oil, salt, and pepper in a medium bowl. Grill chicken until cooked through and lightly charred, about 4 minutes per side. Let chicken rest 5 minutes before slicing. Serve with tortillas, avocados, fruit salsa, queso fresco, and sliced red onion.

Watermelon Lemonade 1 3/4 1 4

seedless watermelon, peeled and cut into chunks cup lemon juice cup sugar cups water

Run the watermelon chunks through a juicer and pour the fresh watermelon juice into a large pitcher filled halfway with ice. If you do not have a juicer, puree the watermelon in a blender or food processor. Then strain into a large pitcher filled halfway with ice. You should end up with 2 to 21/4 cups juice. Add lemon juice, sugar, and water to the large pitcher with watermelon juice. Stir to combine until the sugar has dissolved. Serve cold.

Want to make your watermelon lemonade for just the grown ups? Substitute one cup of water for one cup of vodka.
