“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. ” Jn 1v5

In our annual Remembrance services, I am always moved by the words “We will remember them” . It’s a commitment given all who serve in the armed forces. Remembering can be happy or painful. Remembering can be difficult, or may be becoming impossible. Sometimes a piece of music or a fragrance will provoke memory. I am learning how to sketch. I have discovered that this helps me remember the beauty of the things that I’m fortunate enough to see. I did a rough watercolour sketch of poppies that I saw in the garden at Hatfield House. A photo that I took didn’t capture the impression that they had upon me, but the sketch evokes more memory, the light of the sunshine caught in the petals and shimmering through the stems. I think it’s because I invested some time, albeit short, in making it.

Remembrance is an investment. Our shared rituals, or those that we carry out privately, cement important structures into our existence. Whether they are a ceremony, or a flower, or art, poetry or music or a combination, they strengthen us, helping us to move through loss or injury or times of darkness. Faith is part of that too. John’s Gospel describes Jesus Christ as the light of the world: “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. ” The Gospel talks about a light that has been there from before the beginning of time and space, one that darkness has never been able to extinguish. As we commit to our acts of Remembrance this November, it’s good to reflect on the light that shines in our lives or maybe in our memories. May God enable us to use it to help each other through the darkness.
