The Independent Schools Council of Australia

ISCA member organisations Association of Independent Schools of the ACT Inc (AISACT) www.ais.act.edu.au The Association of Independent Schools of New South Wales Ltd (AISNSW) www.aisnsw.edu.au Independent Schools Queensland (ISQ) www.isq.qld.edu.au Association of Independent Schools of South Australia (AISSA) www.ais.sa.edu.au Independent Schools Tasmania (IST) www.independentschools.tas.edu.au Independent Schools Victoria (ISV) www.is.vic.edu.au Association of Independent Schools of Western Australia Inc (AISWA) www.ais.wa.edu.au

Providing national leadership and advocacy for Independent schooling in Australia.

The Independent Schools Council of Australia (ISCA) is the national peak body representing the Independent school sector. ISCA’s primary role is to bring the unique needs of Independent schools to the attention of the Australian Government and to represent the sector on national issues. ISCA serves and supports its members, and through them Independent schools, by: • Advocating for Australian Government funding support which facilitates choice, diversity and innovation in Independent schools • Representing the interests of Independent schools in national school education policy development • Promoting the contribution made by Independent schools to the provision of quality and innovative education in Australia • Producing communications that enhance the understanding of the Independent school sector with the Australian Government, school education stakeholders and the wider community. ISCA’s members are the eight state and territory Associations of Independent Schools. Through these Associations, ISCA represents more than 1,100 schools and over 600,000 students, accounting for approximately 16 per cent of Australian school enrolments. Independent schools may choose to belong to their State or Territory Association of Independent Schools. It is these Associations that provide direct services to schools in the area of implementation of the Australian Government’s national reform agenda, curriculum support, professional development and industrial relations services. They also represent the interests of Independent schools on a State or Territory basis. THE BURSAR : ISSUE 1 : 2019

ISCA’s over-arching key communications messages are built around the themes of choice, diversity and partnership. Greater choice provides parents the ability to select the right fit for their child, or to move them if the fit is not quite right. There are many reasons a school may or may not meet an individual child’s needs. Independent schools provide additional options to find the right fit or to fill gaps. Independent schools reflect the diversity of Australian society. The sector includes schools with a wide variety of educational philosophies and programs, religious affiliations and cultures. These schools serve diverse communities, including the most disadvantaged communities in Australia. Parental contributions to schooling reflect a partnership in helping deliver effective educational impact for less public investment. It is estimated that the willingness and commitment of parents to pay fees for Independent schooling saves governments approximately $4.6 billion a year, based on a calculation of the increased funding that would be required if all Independent school students attended government schools where they would be fully publicly funded. The Australian Independent school sector is made up of an extremely diverse collection of schools that provide a variety of school cultures and pedagogies often not available in the government system. These include schools of many varied religious affiliations; specific educational philosophy schools such as Montessori and Steiner; community schools; and the majority of the country’s boarding schools (in fact the Independent school sector is the largest provider of boarding schools for Indigenous students). Independent schools also cater to specific groups of disadvantaged students including high needs students with disability attending special schools, Indigenous

students attending remote 100 per cent Indigenous schools, and highly disadvantaged youth attending Independent special assistance schools. ISCA also regularly meets with a National Consultative Group of many of the representatives of school groups from the Independent school sector in order to discuss issues of national significance and to share information. These meetings help to maintain relationships across the sector and create a greater understanding of the different ways national educational issues have an impact on the various school groups. In addition ISCA is also represented on a number of national education committees, including Education Council working groups, Australian Government Department of Education and Training working groups and steering committees, Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) working groups and other government and statutory bodies. Participation on these national bodies is an important way that ISCA represents the Independent school sector at the national level. ISCA’s involvement on these committees helps ensure that the sector’s interests are taken into account as policies are being formed which may impact on the operations of Independent schools. There is close collaboration between ISCA and its member Associations so that appropriately skilled representation is selected.

Managing Risk

ISQ maintains a vigilant eye on the national and state education scene, keeping member schools appraised of key changes that directly impact their current and future operations. Schools operate within a complex and dynamic regulatory and legislative environment and competitive education market. They also face a range of immediate risks in their day-to-day activities and long-term risks that must be managed to ensure the school’s ongoing sustainability. According to the Aon Independent Schools Risk Report 2018, Australian independent schools nominated the following as their top 10 risk concerns: • brand/reputation • student safety • increasing competition/decreasing enrolment numbers • school governance • IT systems failure • ability to attract and retain talented staff • access to funding • privacy/data breach • allegations of child abuse • new malicious cyber threat e.g. hacking, ransomware

ISQ constantly monitors this compliance and risk landscape to ensure independent schools are informed of the latest regulatory and legislative changes, as well as issues on the horizon. This ensures schools are well prepared to deal with impending challenges or system reforms. Headline national inquiries such as the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, as well as federal school funding reviews, have significant implications for independent schools. In 2019, ISQ will keep independent school members and their business managers up to date with the latest developments on prominent national and state issues including: • requirements in the new 2019-2023 National School Reform Agreement between the Australian and Queensland Governments and the associated bilateral state agreement • the transition to a new federal school funding model that uses a direct measure of parental income to calculate non-state school Commonwealth funding entitlements • the implementation of recommendations from the: • Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse • report of Queensland’s Anti-Cyberbullying Taskforce • the roll-out of NAPLAN Online • the review of the funding loading for students with disability.

Right time, right place learning ISQ has developed online courses* in four key areas to support member schools to meet a range of compliance requirements and to build school board capacity. These modules assist staff to:

Association of Independent Schools of the Northern Territory (AISNT) The Association of Independent Schools of the Northern Territory (AISNT) was formed in 1989 to represent and promote the diverse interests of Independent schools in the Northern Territory, as well as advocating for the sector nationally as a member of the Independent Schools Council of Australia. AISNT is not a system authority, but a representative and service organisation, providing information and advice to schools on many issues and promoting the sector to governments, the education community and the general public.

Independent Schools are dedicated to the care and development of our young people. There are 20 Independent Schools across the Northern Territory. The Independent sector is the Northern Territory’s second largest and fastest growing educational sector. It has the highest rate of NTCET completions, the most full fee-paying international students and serves a vast number of very satisfied families. Independent schools lead the way in academic excellence, arts and music education, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), Indigenous boarding programs, sport and outdoor education. Research by AISNT has found that parents value the family feel of local Independent Schools. Parents also value quality, choice, and knowing that care for all students is paramount. Independent Schools deliver student-centred education. A key aspect of this is a commitment to student wellbeing. The link between wellbeing and learning has been clearly established, but there is also a deep belief among Independent School educators about the importance of holistic student development. AISNT is incorporated under the Associations Incorporation Act. Within existing legislative requirements, Independent schools and systems are autonomous in their operations, determining their own curriculum and co-curricular programs, discipline policies, employment of staff and management of resources, provided they meet the registration

Is technology the future of education?

With technology advancing rapidly in today’s society, it was only a matter of time until schools began integrating it into classrooms. So much so, that terms like ‘digital literacy’ and ‘digital native’ have developed as expressions of technological ability and status.

Classroom teaching, interaction and communication now almost always involve some type of technology. And although it is not the be all and end all to engaging students, it is practically impossible for younger generations to know a world without it. So how exactly is technology benefiting students? We take a look at how the internet, assistive technologies and big-scale television productions have become a part of the modern classroom, and what it means for the future of education. Embracing technology

Before the internet became as accessible as it is now, we sought information manually through books and print-based materials. These days, according to Associate Professor Joanne O’Mara from Deakin’s School of Education, ‘The use of iPads and the internet gives young people access to unprecedented amounts of information and misinformation. ‘Whereas in the past information was a scarcity, books were bought into the school, selected by the school library, carefully edited by publishing companies, and limited by school budgets, now there is a plethora of information.’ The focus now, Assoc. Prof. O’Mara notes, is on educating students how to discern information and recognise fact from fiction.

Deakin Motion.Lab and ABC Education THE BURSAR : ISSUE 1 : 2019

Technological advances in education have also particularly benefited students with special needs. Certain activities or tasks that were once a struggle for students to complete have now been made possible through the use of assistive technologies.

19

‘Many new technologies that are being used in schools have excellent accessibility features built into them that assist students with disabilities. For instance, speech-to-text and text-to-speech software is now accessible and sophisticated, assisting students with vision impairments or conditions such as motor dysgraphia,’ Assoc. Prof. O’Mara says.

Deakin Motion.Lab and ABC Education

In an effort to up the level of student engagement, teachers are also now able to draw on myriad education-based games, apps, and video available to help engage and educate students. A recent production between the ABC and Deakin Motion.Lab called Minibeast Heroes, for example, is one of the latest educational resources aimed at young learners and developed for teachers to use within the classroom. Big ideas for growing minds

Minibeast Heroes is a six-part educational mini-series developed to help primary-aged students engage with curriculum-based science content. Each two-and-a-half-minute episode teaches students about a different insect, drawing on explicit links to the Australian Curriculum. The production of the series is the result of a collaboration between ABC Education, ABC R+D and Deakin Motion.Lab (DML), a research group based within the School of Communication and Creative Arts at Deakin’s Burwood campus.

About Deakin university

Project leader Dr Jordan Beth Vincent from DML explains that the mini-series was produced using a virtual production pipeline which utilises ‘motion capture, facial capture and virtual production technology that has been developed over the past several years as a way to make the process of creating animated and computer generates (CG) content faster, cheaper and more creatively iterative.’

teachers with experience and influence in their field

Harnessing innovative technology in combination with extensive research meant that content production could be done quickly and creatively without compromising the show’s quality – an important consideration when developing content for an audience comprised of young learners. In addition to ABC Me and ABC iView, the show is available on ABC Education for teachers to use directly within the classroom. There is also an additional 360 video experience available to virtually immerse users in the environment and see the bugs up close. The production process and creativity behind the development of this educational mini-series is a testament to the level of innovation technology in education has now reached in comparison to years past.

Where to from here?

What the future holds for the place of technology in education depends on what it is and how it is used. Ultimately, utilising technology is not the only way to teach and engage students, but it is certainly a big part of education in today’s world. According to Assoc. Prof. O’Mara, ‘There are already many technologies integrated into education systems, and the benefits of them always depend upon what they do and how they are used by systems, schools and teachers.’ Teacher training, cyber safety, and the cost of devices are also important factors to consider as education and technology become more closely integrated. This means ensuring both teachers and students are properly trained to use the technology, and that the devices needed aren’t putting families out of pocket. But it is clear that technology in education is here to stay. Computer games, videos and apps developed as teaching material will continue to influence the way technology can be harnessed within education.

Sustainable Classroom and Technology Systems

Powering schools to save The impact of changes in Australian electricity markets and a growing community desire to embrace environmentally sustainable practices is leading schools to consider how they meet their future energy needs.

School budgets are being impacted by a combination of higher electricity prices and increasing energy use. Schools are using more energy to air condition classrooms, power energy intensive technology and cater for growth. As energy demand climbs, many schools are also discovering that the capacity of their existing power supply systems are insufficient and require upgrade. School energy demand is likely to continue increasing as student populations grow, temperatures rise, and more attention is paid to the quality of the internal classroom environment. Traditionally, the only option available for schools to meet this challenge is to upgrade their grid power supply. This process is both costly and time consuming. Increasing reliance on grid power is also at odds with the values of those school communities who want to show environmental leadership by implementing sustainable practices in their school. However, there is an alternative clean energy solution that avoids the economic, environmental and social costs of grid supplied electricity. Hivve Technology has developed a comprehensive energy solution for schools that is fully sustainable and 100% reliable. The Hivve system combines solar PV generation and battery storage with classroom level energy measurement and control. Hivve enabled classrooms within a school are managed as a network creating a reliable, onsite power supply system. As classrooms are added to the Hivve network, the school becomes more energy self-sufficient and less reliant on grid power. In most cases, the Hivve system is a lower capital and operating cost alternative to grid supplied electricity.

Hivve iQ - the technology at the heart of the Hivve system - monitors and reports classroom conditions in real time. Data captured includes temperature and air quality as well as energy generation and use. This information is a powerful tool that allows teachers, students and the school community to actively engage with their environment. Research on the relationship between indoor environment and learning reinforces what teachers have been saying for years – comfortable temperatures, healthy air quality and thoughtful design are major contributors to good educational outcomes. Hivve’s unique classroom by classroom approach is designed to suit any type of classroom or learning area. In this way all classrooms in a school, regardless of age or design, can be Hivve enabled allowing school-wide management of energy use and learning conditions. For new build projects, Hivve Technology has created an advanced modular classroom – The Hivve - providing schools with a ‘green’ zero net energy learning space that is scalable, flexible, affordable and fast. Hivve Technology is a real game changer that gives schools an outstanding opportunity to demonstrate practical environmental leadership in our communities. Students and teachers benefit from better classroom environments, schools benefit from significantly lower energy costs and the environment benefits from lower CO2 emissions. Empowering Personalised Learning in Diverse Classrooms: Strategies to ensure success for ALL students without adding to existing teacher workload! By: Greg O’Connor, AsiaPac EdTech Manager at Texthelp In a nutshell, I’m a teacher with over 30 years of experience, both in classrooms and in management positions. I now spend most of my time travelling across Australia inspiring teachers, school leadership and Catholic Education Office teams to embrace technology as an integral part of their strategy for ensuring equitable access to learning for all students.

Accommodating diverse learning needs matters Australian classrooms are made up of students with diverse learning needs. Some of these students excel and need to be challenged further. Others struggle with certain literacy, learning and numeracy tasks. The 2018 NAPLAN results indicated that by the time students across Australia had reached Year 9, 10% of them had not achieved the national minimum standard in reading, spelling, grammar and punctuation, and numeracy. With 20% of students unable to achieve the national minimum standard in writing. These students may struggle because of learning difficulties such as dyslexia or because they come from disadvantaged backgrounds. Others may experience difficulty because they have English as an additional language. And some may struggle with numeracy simply because they do not have the literacy skills to read the maths materials being presented to them. This diverse mix in classrooms, schools and across Catholic Ed Dioceses, make differentiation and facilitation of personalised learning critical for successful student learning outcomes. What is personalised learning? Is it like differentiation? Well yes. And no. Both are about providing learning experiences that are considerate of the diverse nature of learners that make up Australian classrooms. But while differentiating instruction is teacher-led, personalising learning is very much student-led and is often supported by technology options.

While no technology can take the place of an educator’s expertise and good teaching practice, it can effectively step up to be a “digital assistant” in the classroom. Place the right technology in the hands of students and they are then empowered to take on personalising their own learning experience. Self-selecting the tools they need to access teaching and learning materials and going on to successfully show what they know. Significantly boosting their self-confidence in the process without adding to the existing teacher workload. One such tool is Texthelp’s Read&Write, used by over 18 million students worldwide. It’s a software toolbar which offers easy-to-use student-driven supports for reading, writing, comprehension and study skills. Assisting teachers to foster a personalised learning environment in their classrooms and helping every member of the class reach their full potential. As reinforced by Danielle Myburgh, E-Learning Specialist at Hobsonville Point Secondary School in New Zealand:

“Read&Write frees up my time in the classroom, effectively allowing me to be in more places at once. It allows students to progress with their work independently, rather than being held up waiting for my attention. It’s magic!” Equally enthusiastic is Prue Gill, Executive Teacher from Lanyon High School in Canberra. Following deployment of Read&Write to all 42,000 students of the ACT

Education Directorate for the past three years, she shared, “I recommend Read&Write to other schools and talk about it constantly.”

One teacher involved in the study shared that, “I can add so much more value as a teacher when I’m not constantly checking spellings every time they put their hand up and it’s much more rewarding to be able to help them to develop their writing skills in other ways.”

By giving learners access to tools which enable student voice and choice in the classroom, teachers’ time spent on non-productive tasks is significantly reduced, freeing time to spend it more productively, actively motivating, encouraging and inspiring learners. In other words… being a great teacher!

Texthelp tools are free for teachers!

Assessing the impact A year-long study in the UK, finalised in 2018, compared the results of schools using Read&Write with those using another literacy support strategy. It showed the following results:

The full premium version of Read&Write is free for all teachers. On all platforms Windows, Mac, Google and on the iPad. As is EquatIO, our tool for making maths digital and allowing it to be read out loud accurately for students who need that additional support.

66% of Read&Write users showed improvement in their average reading age compared to only 27% of non-Read&Write users

Sign up now! text.help/bursar

In the lower achievement group, the writing scores of Read&Write users increased by 13.7% compared to only 4.2% for the non-users

Interseat is a leading ading education infrastructure specialist pecialist taking a different ating. approach to seating. Is your school currently spending excessive time and resources setting up stackable seating for events ents in your multi-purpose space or school hall? It’s not only time consuming but ut can become an OH&S risk to your staff, not to mention that plastic removable seating eating is not the most comfortable to sit on. Rather than just a place to sit your audience, Interseat believes seating is an opportunity to optimise your facility’s multi-functional space and change the way you operate. Interseat seating systems provide your audience with the viewing experience they deserve, and the flexibility, quality, aesthetic and practicality you need. They specialise in the highest quality products and outstanding customer service that makes them your trusted project partner from initial concepts through to the ongoing service of your completed system. After-service care is a priority, from the first complimentary service, through to all continuing services and backed by a generous warranty. Designing customised compliant multipurpose spaces Interseat’s retractable seating systems are designed to provide seating when seating is required and floor space when it is not. This incredible flexibility creates very versatile spaces. There are several different types of units, available including fixed, travelling and mobile. All Interseat’s retractable seating systems are custom designed to suit each individual project. Importantly, retractable seating design requires site specific dimensions to be used in combination with engineering limitations, customer needs and expectations, as well the existing infrastructure on site. In addition, the design must comply with the National Construction Code - Building Code of Australia – Volume One. Where the Building Code is silent on an aspect of design, Interseat designs are certified to the European Code BSEN 13200-5-2006 Spectator Facilities - Part 5: Telescopic Stands. This means you can be more than confident that the Interseat team has the expertise and experience to ensure your project meets or exceeds all the relevant requirements. Creating spaces safely and efficiently For school assemblies or major events, many schools bring loose seats out of storage and set the seating up in rows. For schools with more than 1500 students, the set-up is extremely time consuming and involves the labour of many members of staff. When events are concluded, the seating must be stacked up again and moved back into storage. Clearly this is a very time consuming process. Moving seating and stacking seats from heights requires awkward lifting away from the body and poses a high risk of back injury or muscle strain. Retractable seating and Interseat’s auto opening and closing seats, not only eliminate the OH&S risks of manual lifting, but provide a super-efficient system where 1000 seats can be extended and fully utilisable in less than five minutes. Kardinia International College has a major multipurpose building that is extensively used for a large variety of school functions. Typically, staff would seat up to 1400 people and the time for setting up and labour involved was a massive tax on resources. Kardinia engaged Interseat to design and install a retractable seating system that would halve their set-up time, reduce labour and at the same time greatly enhance the multiuse options for the space.

Interseat has installed an excellent system which is easy to use, is quick to roll out and equally retract back in and looks fantastic. The 727 seat Interseat system has been an outstanding addition to our multipurpose facility. Catherine Lockhart, Principal, Kardinia International College

Supporting the business of education Schools and those who work in them are in the business of education. It’s a provocative description many educators will baulk at. After all, a business implies a commercial activity, focused on profit and measured through the narrow prism of the bottom line.

Teachers and school leaders, on the other hand, are engaged in a social good – the education of children. It’s a role that can’t be reduced to figures on an accountant’s balance sheet. The profit that educators earn comes through the wellbeing and advancement of their students. Sometimes it can’t be measured until years after a student leaves school. Clearly, schools are not businesses in the commercial sense. When I refer to the business of education, I’m not saying education is a business. Instead, I’m talking about the processes and practices that ultimately advance the wellbeing of students. I’m talking about the best ways of supporting the teachers whose daily focus is on young learners. This involves all of the complex and connected systems of a school – its governing structure, administrative support, building maintenance, staff management, and the professional expertise of its principal and teachers. If they don’t work together to advance the school’s fundamental aim, then the school isn’t doing the best it can in the business of educating students. Independent Schools Victoria (ISV) supports all of those engaged in educating more than 145,000 students who attend our 222 Member Schools, operating on more than 300 campuses. These schools employ close to 6500 non-teaching staff. We recognise that the work of principals and teachers, the day-to-day interaction with students, can only take place within a framework of essential support structures – especially those provided by school bursars, managers and administrators. Central to ISV’s work is assisting those who provide that support, by offering advice, information, training and professional development. ISV staff are engaged with the Victorian chapter of the Association of School Business Administrators in a program for new administrators in Independent schools. The program includes workshops for newly-appointed business managers and staff interested in moving into the role in the future.

This includes finances, particularly in the complex areas of government funding and accountability. We provide assistance with demographics so school managers can plan for the future; we monitor legislation and changes in regulation; we conduct surveys that allow managers and principals to assess their performance; and we update managers on things they need to know. We can advise managers and administrators on processes related to fee collection, disputes with parents, student and staff occupational health and safety, enrolment processes, and engagement with the school regulator. This wide range of services reflect reflect the complexity of running a school and are tailored to meet the needs of our diverse membership, which ranges from large, longestablished and well-resourced schools, to newer, smaller schools, with limited staff and other resources. Regardless of size, Independent schools can not rely on the extensive and centralized management resources provided by the big bureaucracies that support government schools or large school systems, such as those operated by Catholic school authorities. In many Independent schools the role of managers and bursars can encompass the complex and sometimes sensitive area of employment relations. ISV provides extensive services in this area, too, with information and assistance on, among other things, recruitment; terms and conditions of employment; compliance with awards; workplace policies and guidelines; and management of employment relationships. This support is delivered through a range of channels. There is face-to-face communication through briefings, workshops and seminars. Other information is shared in newsletters and reports, or on the ISV website. In the past two years we have developed and implemented an extensive and growing online platform, isConnect, with up-to-date information on all school process that can be accessed at any time. None of these channels replaces the personal contact provided by ISV staff to those who work in our Member Schools in the business of education.

The workshops cover a wide range of topics from presenters (both ISV staff and experienced business managers), with the aim of giving people a crash course in the range of issues they are likely to face. Topics include government funding and accountability; the role of the business manager in relation to the board, principal and staff; school governance; and finance and management. Support in all of these areas continues in the daily work of ISV’s specialist staff, who are on hand to provide advice and support drawing on their expertise in all areas of school operations. Compliance and Risk Management

The risk schools often miss – insufficient governance training for boards There are several high-level strategic risks for schools that should be well known to business managers and school bursars.

However, there are three crucial governance risks relating to school boards and leadership that can have a significant impact on all school operations: • Failure to develop and maintain a high-performance board. • Failure to provide robust, data-based board reports. • Failure of boards and school leadership to spend sufficient time on strategy. Board members at most schools are volunteers who give freely of their time to ensure that their school can benefit from their collective talent and wisdom. However, and many business managers will attest to this, as volunteers, it is difficult for many school board members, as time-poor parents or time-poor professionals, to find time to engage in meaningful professional development (PD). It is also a genuine source of frustration if a school offers their board quality PD and it is not taken up. So how do you mitigate for the risk “failure to develop and maintain a high-performance board”? It is simple; provide good quality, easily accessible and time-effective training that changes behaviour. Laurie Patton, Executive Director of Internet Australia in “The Case For Mandating Governance Training For NFP Boards,” in Pro Bono Australia notes, “Not-for-profit boards must ensure proper governance principles and processes are in place so mandatory governance training and a review of board performance by an external expert from time to time is a good idea.” According to the Department of Education (WA) with regard to school board training for Independent Public Schools, “Training has been developed to strengthen public school councils/boards and enable chairs and members to effectively perform their role in supporting the directions of their schools.” Regardless of whether schools are government or non-government schools, it is clear that training for boards assists individual board members to understand their roles and responsibilities as board members, how their board can effectively contribute to the success of their school and the resources available to them. All schools are committed to the ongoing professional development of their boards and most schools provide their boards with several training opportunities each year. Strategic boards also allocate an annual budget to encourage members to participate in training and development programs. It also equips them to be able to arrange bespoke training and development for each board member. In some states and territories there is a mandated requirement that board members undertake PD during their board tenure. The following examples are pertinent:

• New South Wales: Registered and Accredited Individual Non-Government Schools (NSW) Manual 3.9.1.4 and Registered and Accredited System Non-Government Schools (NSW) Manual 5.9.1.4 require that schools have policies and procedures in place with specific reference to the mandatory completion of 12 hours of professional learning in governance by board members and principals over a three-year time frame. Training must be predominantly in the context of school governance and provided by a NESA approved training body. THE BURSAR : ISSUE 1 : 2019

• South Australia: The Standards for Registration and Review of Registration of Schools in South Australia - 2.9 and 2.10 require a school to provide appropriate professional development and that its teaching and non-teaching staff, contractors, volunteers and visitors are regularly informed of their child protection and mandatory reporting obligations. • Western Australia: The Guide to Registration Standards and Other Requirements for Non-Government Schools July 2018 - Non-Government School Regulation requires evidence of training opportunities offered to and undertaken by members of the governing body. It is essential that when any person joins a school board that they are made aware of their obligations and accountabilities regarding induction and ongoing professional development. CompliSpace recommends that all new board members, at a minimum, complete training and testing in the following areas: School Policy Induction

• • • • • •

Child Protection Program Complaints Human Resources Student Duty of Care Privacy Work, Health and Safety.

New board members, depending on their specific requirements, could also complete training in areas such as: Specialised Induction

• • • •

Responsible Person (NSW) Director and Officer Duties Conflicts of Interest and Related Party Transactions Board Protocols: • protection of commercial in confidence information • channels of communication • meeting processes • Legal and Regulatory Compliance.

High Level Induction

• • • • •

Legal Responsibilities and Accountabilities of a Not-For-Profit Board Strategic Planning processes Strategic Risk Management Managing the Risk of Principal/Leadership Burn-out Understanding Financial Documents: cash flow statements, balance sheets and dashboards

CompliSpace has recently developed a white paper “12 Key Risks for School Boards to Consider in 2019,” which is available online at www.schoolgovernance.net.au/12keyrisksbursar. Downloading and sharing this document with your board would be an excellent starting point for all business managers or bursars. It could be used by your board to review your school’s strategic risks for this year, how these risks link to your strategic plan and, most importantly, to assist them in developing an effective board training or professional development program that is actively taken up. These actions would be valid mitigation strategies for the risk “failure to develop and maintain a high-performance board.” So, how will your school board go about mitigating for this risk? 1300 132 090 contactus@complispace.com.au www.complispace.com.au

Arts and Crafts

The Importance of art in child development By Grace Hwang Lynch

In recent years, school curricula in the United States have shifted heavily toward common core subjects of reading and math, but what about the arts? Although some may regard art education as a luxury, simple creative activities are some of the building blocks of child development. Learning to create and appreciate visual aesthetics may be more important than ever to the development of the next generation of children as they grow up.

Developmental Benefits of Art

Motor Skills: Many of the motions involved in making art, such as holding a paintbrush or scribbling with a crayon, are essential to the growth of fine motor skills in young children. According to the National Institutes of Health, developmental milestones around age three should include drawing a circle and beginning to use safety scissors. Around age four, children may be able to draw a square and begin cutting straight lines with scissors. Many preschool programs emphasize the use of scissors because it develops the dexterity children will need for writing. Language Development: For very young children, making art—or just talking about it—provides opportunities to learn words for colors, shapes and actions. When toddlers are as young as a year old, parents can do simple activities such as crumpling up paper and calling it a “ball.” By elementary school, students can use descriptive words to discuss their own creations or to talk about what feelings are elicited when they see different styles of artwork. Decision Making: According to a report by Americans for the Arts, art education strengthens problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. The experience of making decisions and choices in the course of creating art carries over into other parts of life. “If they are exploring and thinking and experimenting and trying new ideas, then creativity has a chance to blossom,” says MaryAnn Kohl, an arts educator and author of numerous books about children’s art education. Visual Learning: Drawing, sculpting with clay and threading beads on a string all develop visual-spatial skills, which are more important than ever. Even toddlers know how to operate a smart phone or tablet, which means that even before they can read, kids are taking in visual information. This information consists of cues that we get from pictures or three-dimensional objects from digital media, books and television.

“Parents need to be aware that children learn a lot more from graphic sources now than in the past,” says Dr. Kerry Freedman, Head of Art and Design Education at Northern Illinois University. “Children need to know more about the world than just what they can learn through text and numbers. Art education teaches students how to interpret, criticise, and use visual information, and how to make choices based on it.” Knowledge about the visual arts, such as graphic symbolism, is especially important in helping kids become smart consumers and navigate a world filled with marketing logos. Inventiveness: When kids are encouraged to express themselves and take risks in creating art, they develop a sense of innovation that will be important in their adult lives. “The kind of people society needs to make it move forward are thinking, inventive people who seek new ways and improvements, not people who can only follow directions,” says Kohl. “Art is a way to encourage the process and the experience of thinking and making things better!” Cultural Awareness: As we live in an increasingly diverse society, the images of different groups in the media may also present mixed messages. “If a child is playing with a toy that suggests a racist or sexist meaning, part of that meaning develops because of the aesthetics of the toy—the color, shape, texture of the hair,” says Freedman. Teaching children to recognize the choices an artist or designer makes in portraying a subject helps kids understand the concept that what they see may be someone’s interpretation of reality. Improved Academic Performance: Studies show that there is a correlation between art and other achievement. A report by Americans for the Arts states that young people who participate regularly in the arts (three hours a day on three days each week through one full year) are four times more likely to be recognised for academic achievement, to participate in a math and science fair or to win an award for writing an essay or poem than children who do not participate.

About Sophia Mundi Steiner School Sophia Mundi is an independent, non-denominational and co-educational inner city Melbourne Steiner school that offers an enriching, holistic educational pathway from Early Childhood to Senior Secondary. We are located in the beautiful grounds of the Abbotsford Convent, next door to the Collingwood Children’s Farm. We are a not-for-profit organization, a member of Steiner Education Australia and an IB World School. We are the only Steiner school in Australia to combine the creative and academic richness of Steiner education (to grade 10) with the academic rigour of the International Baccalaureate (grades 11 & 12). Sophia Mundi is above all else a community of students, staff and parents. We welcome newcomers as part of our community. Steiner education is not exclusive. On the contrary, our curriculum and methods are highly inclusive and open to students with very different needs and cultural backgrounds. The school is supported by parents and friends who believe in sharing in the education of their children. Mental Health 43

Emerging mental health issues and the challenges for schools Mental illnesses such as anxiety and depression often emerge for the first time during adolescence and young adulthood, with approximately three-quarters of young people having their first experience of mental ill-health before the age of 25 years.

Although mental health issues most commonly emerge in secondary school aged young people, there are increasing rates of primary school students showing serious mental health issues including anxiety, self-harm and suicidal behaviours. Given the amount of time children and young people spend at school, educators are often best placed to monitor and support their student’s mental health issues and help them find appropriate services. However, as Australian schools face increasing resource pressures and are regularly confronted by serious and complex youth health issues, it is also important that staff are supported to build their capacity to better support their students. headspace in Schools (hiS) is a national workforce that supports, engages and partners with education and health sectors across Australia, to help build the mental health literacy and capacity of workforces, young people, their families and the wider school community. Our initiatives are designed to support the mental health and wellbeing of school communities through evidence-based mental health promotion, prevention, early intervention and postvention services. Emerging concerns of mental health issues in primary and secondary schools

When students experience mental ill-health it can affect how they function at school including their attendance and academic performance. If mental health issues are left untreated or persist, they can also affect young people’s ability to maintain healthy relationships or engage in work or higher education. Schools play a major role in supporting young people with emotional and behavioural problems and it’s often where mental health signs are first identified. In a national survey in 2015, one in seven 4-17 year olds were assessed as having a mental illness in the previous year with the most common illnesses being ADHD, anxiety and depression. Around one in ten (10.9%) of 12-17 year-olds also reported having ever self-harmed, with around three quarters of these young people reporting they had harmed themselves in the previous 12 months.

Suicide is still the leading cause of death of young people in Australia, and can have a devastating effect on everyone in the school community. Although suicide in primary school students is an extremely rare event, for under 14 year olds there appears to be an increasing trend. When a person dies by suicide it is tragic, sudden and often unexpected. The challenge still remains on how to provide flexible and responsive support to school communities to prepare, respond and recover when a child or young person dies by suicide. School staff need to look after their own mental health too

Across the education sector, school leaders and educators report stress and concern about their capacity, or lack thereof, to respond to these issues whilst dealing with their other responsibilities and their own grief. School principals and educators who manage critical incidents within a community require direct access to timely support that is tailored to their unique school community needs. When school staff are supported in their grief, they are better able to attend to their own mental health needs and the wellbeing of their students. It is natural that school staff and students are distressed by the death of a young person or child by suicide and appropriate support at this cruicial time helps to reduce further psychological harm to school communities. This importantly can help students to feel well supported and cared for, thereby reducing the time taken for the school to return to routine functioning. How headspace in Schools can help

headspace is the National Youth Mental Health Foundation for young people aged 12-25. With a focus on early intervention, we work with young people to provide support at a crucial time in their lives – to help get them back on track and strengthen their ability to manage their mental health in the future. The headspace in Schools program is dedicated to improving the mental health and wellbeing outcomes of young people, families and school communities. We provide immediate and ongoing services to reduce the impact of suicide on school communities and help build the mental health capacity of staff, students and their parents. Staff Wellbeing

Improving staff morale and well-being in schools Whilst working in schools can be very rewarding, it can also be very demanding. Curriculum initiatives, change fatigue, demanding parents, student behaviour and increased accountability are having an impact on staff morale and wellbeing. Many academic and corporate staff feel exhausted, undervalued, frustrated and unappreciated.

School leadership and teaching are demanding professions. We are in the privileged position of having the opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives, every day. However, that opportunity comes with challenges and demands. If it was easy, everybody would be doing it. Leading educator Steve Francis highlights that, “Staff morale has a HUGE impact on student achievement, job satisfaction and relationships within schools. High stress levels have a negative impact on everyone. Low morale leads to decreased productivity and effectiveness and a detachment from colleagues and students. This has a negative impact on both student achievement and staff well-being. Low morale will come at a cost to the school.” According to Francis, building staff morale is achieved one action at a time. It is the cumulative affect of many small actions that build staff morale. He says many leaders in schools try to boost staff morale through one off ‘events’. Splashing out on a big event in an attempt to ‘buy’ staff morale is a waste of valuable resources. Morale is built through small, thoughtful actions. The old story of building deposits in the emotional bank account is certainly true. Taking time for people, cutting them some slack when they need it and showing that you care about them as both staff members and as people are vital. It is when times are tough that reputations are built. Staff don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. It is vitally important that leaders are visible and accessible. Taking the time to cheerfully greet staff members and pause to chat with them as one human being to another is important. They don’t care how busy YOU are, they care about how busy THEY are. One approach that destroys staff morale is pretending to consult. This is also known as ‘Clayton’s Consultation’ – the consultation you have when you are not really consulting. We have all witnessed it (and many of us have been guilty of it). Pretending to consult when a decision has already been made. This is a huge waste of time and energy.

Healthy Canteen Food

Introducing a fresh and delicious new face at the canteen – Good Food Hero

Messages of ‘moving more’ and ‘healthy eating’ are everywhere.

Government initiatives like ‘Play Sport Australia’ and ‘Girls Make Your Move’ aimed at getting young Australians more active, more often, have been rolled out. Schools are embracing programs such as ‘Crunch & Sip’ and ‘Live Life Well @ School’ and will soon be held accountable for their part in redefining the food culture within the school learning space. This is where canteens are being called into action. The Healthy School Canteen Strategy is coming into effect across all NSW public schools during 2019. Beyond this, many independent and Catholic schools are adopting their own homegrown initiatives to make healthy eating part of the daily routine. The profile of canteen menus is changing for good. Our young, savvy consumers are being educated to focus on real quality and less processed food with an emphasis on positive nutrition. The bottom line is they still need to enjoy the whole canteen experience, especially the food.

Good Food Hero offers a wide range of dishes, available in single serve and food service catering packs ensuring the right size for any requirement. All items are handmade using the best local seasonal fresh ingredients, then snapped-frozen to seal in the goodness. All within hours of being lovingly prepared by Good Food Hero chefs. Good Food Hero works in close consultation with nutritionists, dieticians, canteen managers and industry bodies like Healthy Kids Association to ensure that students get maximum nutrition and appetite appeal. Good Food Hero is allergy aware and all products are egg and nut-free. All meals have been assessed by the Healthy Kids Association with the majority being 4 health star rated. Many canteens already rely on the goodwill of generous volunteers to operate. Good Food Hero supports canteens by providing convenient, fuss free options to deliver high quality food that can be prepared by staff and volunteers with little or no food industry experience. Good Food Hero products are ideal because they require minimal equipment and can be conveniently prepared by just heating from frozen, which means no preparation or costly fresh food wastage.

One such player with a passion to give school canteens well balanced, chef prepared and delicious meal options is Good Food Hero.

Good Food Hero believes that our kids can make good food choices so it is our mission to give them awesome options.

Matthew Krelle, founder and Managing Director of Good Food Hero talks about the company’s origins, “At Good Food Hero we believe all kids deserve good food and that growing bodies and minds deserve nothing less than the best fuel. With good food we can nourish kids’ curiosity, fuel their ambitions and help them get the most out of their school day.”

Healthy Canteen Food

School canteens as a vehicle for healthy eating By Jewel Maule, Accredited Practicing Dietitian Healthy Kids Association

These days, kids and families are bombarded with messages about health and nutrition. We know we want to make good choices, but sometimes it seems almost impossible to navigate through the endless advice and balance this with the realities of family life. At Healthy Kids Association, we aim to make the healthy choice the simple choice, by providing schools, canteens and families with information that is fun to discover, and easy to follow.

Of course, the canteen is not the only place where these lessons are learned and habits are formed. Healthy Kids Association recommends a whole of school approach to healthy eating, from education around nutrition to setting good examples. Schools can ensure these messages are being reinforced from the classroom to the canteen and beyond by incorporating lessons around growing fresh food into school activities, developing policies against fundraising activities that promote or use unhealthy products, and providing yummy but healthy choices at school events such as reward days, sports carnivals and dances.

School canteens are a vital part of any school community and one of the most important vehicles for guiding the choices that students and families are making about nutrition. Canteens often form part of the school’s culture and are the key source of snacks, meals and drinks for students and teachers between the hours of 9am and 3pm, Monday to Friday.

About Healthy Kids Association

While for many children, the canteen is still seen as a place to get the occasional snack or once-a-week treat, for others it is being increasingly relied upon for multiple meals each day. With more and more families becoming time poor and seeking ways to reduce the load, many children now consume breakfast, morning tea and lunch at school. This means, for those who rely on it, the canteen can provide up to 50 per cent of a child’s nutritional intake on school days! That’s why it is more important than ever for school canteens to be positioned and empowered as a vehicle for healthy eating – and helping students to form and develop healthy habits from a young age.

A Healthy Kids Membership provides your school access to the very best resources and tools for schools. From advice on running the canteen, to seasonal recipes and videos, interactive and printable teaching resources, fun activities for children, resources for parents, access to exclusive offers, regular communications and information about upcoming health promotion workshops and programs – membership is designed to encourage a proactive approach to health for kids.

Healthy Kids Association is a health promotion charity which aims to improve access to nutritious food and educate children and families on how to make healthy choices for a healthy life. Find out more at healthy-kids.com.au Is your school a member of Healthy Kids?

Health & Hygiene

Restore your washrooms to a hygienic standard Every bathroom needs a bit of ‘TLC’ every once and a while to banish those unwanted odours that are a natural development of any washroom. When it comes to public and shared facilities, especially educational establishments where usage frequencies are drastically increased, managing the hygiene levels may, more often than not, require further action than surface cleaning.

Malodours are the result of poorly managed hygiene which includes a build up of bacteria and calcified uric acid. Washrooms that haven’t had regular treatments harbour some harmful bacteria including Staphylococcus aureus, Rhinovirus, Eschericha coli (E Coli), Rotavirus. Unless the build up is extremely severe, these are often things that aren’t visible without an intensive inspection. These bad bacteria are commonly found on surfaces contaminated by faecal matter including taps, wash basins and door handles. This is usually a consequence of the ‘Sneeze Effect’. This is when a toilet is flushed with the lid open, giving rise to a cloud of tiny water droplets, which often contain micro-organisms from urine and faecal matter. Within 60 seconds of a flush, an average sized bathroom can be covered with harmful bacteria. It’s not only surfaces that are at risk with frequent usage, it can only take a matter of weeks for the salt in urine to build up in pipes, creating a powerful odour and eventually resulting in reduced flow through pipes and blockages. Intensive usage requires an Intensive Treatment

Initial is the leading authority of providing hygiene solutions. Intensive Steam Hygiene Treatments are a unique, 3 stage process involving scraping and scaling, steam and sanitisation. This combined solution has been developed to ensure the successful restoration of your washroom. As well as banishing offensive smells and helping you

create a fresh smelling bathroom environment, these treatments are a vital key in defending your plumbing from blockages. Hygiene treatments are successful as a once off service, but supported with an Essential Hygiene maintenance program will maximise protection. Beyond odours, bacteria promotes the spread of illness and disease which can quickly have a negative effect on your students and staff. The cooler months are renowned for cases of influenza, encouraging the need for prompt removal of germs within washrooms to avoid any health hazards. Regularly treating toilets, urinals, drains, walls and floors creates an extra level of protection as well as proactively reducing the risk of bacteria and illness to spread throughout your school. Treatments are scheduled directly with local customer representatives minimising any disruptions and are performed discreetly by highly experienced Technicians. What can be done between treatments?

Incorporating sanitising solutions into your washroom programs are extremely beneficial. Good bacteria can be used to counteract bad bacteria, limiting the chance of spreading. Ask us about our Dual Sanitiser, a complementary offering to improving your overall hygienic standards. With recent increased education around the impact of bacteria, there has been a significant rise in awareness, moving us into a healthy, happier, safer future. Health, Hygiene & Cleaning

Let’s go Nano: make schools a safer learning space With the recent measles alerts and the early start of flu season, experienced parents and teachers can predict the impact of cross infection in the school environment. Do you want to prevent classrooms and school facilities becoming a “greenhouse” for more viruses and bacteria? How about reducing the number of sick children and sick teachers during the flu season?.

Viruses that spread flu and gastro related diseases survive on hard surfaces for hours. Handrails, furniture, canteen benches, light switches, toilet seats, computer keyboards and mouses, are just some of the common places where bacteria can thrive. The negative impact of that fact goes beyond making more people sick. The odour of toilets, the build up of toxic moulds, and the extra operative costs for health-related issues such as hiring substitute teachers are just some of the additional problems it poses. While it’s not feasible to create a completely bacteria-free environment for our students and teachers, we can certainly work together to make learning spaces safer and cleaner and minimise the impact of the health-related issues that result from the spreading of viruses. Some simple and practical strategies that schools can employ include ensuring that the school community is well informed about high-risk seasonal infectious diseases such as flu and gastroenteritis. What are these diseases, what are the causes and effects of them and how do we prevent them? Students could be encouraged to create informative posters and newsletters that support the practices that help prevent spreading germs, such as using hand sanitisers in classrooms, and disinfecting the computer peripherals after each class, etc. Another extremely effective approach to reduce the risks of spreading germs is to “armour” all commonly accessed hard surfaces with long-lasting anti-bacterial properties. A perfect hot spot for germs is a computer keyboard and mouse. Think of the computers in the library that are being used throughout the day by numerous students, who may or may not wash their hands before or after using it. But what if this surface had a magical anti-bacterial property that no bacteria could survive and proliferate on? Student bathrooms, despite frequent thorough cleaning, still tend to produce an unpleasant odour that always seems to find its way to staffrooms and classrooms. This odour usually comes from bacteria that are present on tiles and other hard surfaces that are unlikely to be wiped down after each use. But what if the tiles were equipped with a magical anti-bacterial shield so that odour-causing bacteria cannot thrive and make the toilets a “perfumery” of unpleasant smells? How about those stinky air-con filters and sticky light switches? They all need this magical property. The good news is such “magical antiviral and antibacterial” property is not a fairy tale. Nano360 is a FDA approved medical grade disinfectant using Nanotechnology. A coating of Nano360 on the hard surface makes the surface antibacterial, antiviral, mould-proof, rustproof, and able to disintegrate TVOC and formaldehyde usually present after a new paint job. What is Nano Disinfectant?

The new nanocomposite is a breakthrough in Chemical Nano Engineering. The nanocomposite is formed by two chemicals: Colloidal Silver and Titanium Dioxide. The antibacterial properties of silver have long been known. Colloidal Silver is a catalyst, disabling the enzyme used for their oxygen metabolism in all one-celled bacteria, fungus and virus. It is of no harm to human enzymes or any part of the human body chemistry. The anatase crystal structure of Titanium Dioxide inhibits the proliferation of germs. The disinfection process requires a special delivery system to create an invisible but long lasting protective coating for surfaces and objects. It works at a microscopic level to reduce the growth of bacteria and viruses. Long-lasting Results

The long-lasting effect of Nano360 will give you an invisible protective barrier to fight against bacteria. The coating will last for up to three years and the durability depends on the bonding material and usage. It is proven to be scratch-resistance by achieving the SGS scrub resistance test certification, which means even you wash the surface 3000 times and the coating will not come off. A Highly Versatile and Safe Disinfectant

Nano360 protective coating on surfaces of premises offers the following benefits: • Disintegrate formaldehyde and TVOC’s (found in new paint) indoors • Disinfection: destroys dangerous virus and bacteria and creates an antimicrobial barrier • Reduces odour in many settings including car, gym gear, bathroom • Reduces mould in high moisture areas • Reduces dust and allergens to minimise associated health risks • Acts as an air purifier in every room without occupying the area • An affordable investment to create a safer and healthier working environment which in a long run, helps to reduce operative costs that arise due to health-related issues • A safe product approved by FDA & TGA as Hospital Grade Disinfectant. Continued research program in conjunction with University of Sydney Nano Institute. Nano360 is a highly versatile disinfectant that can be applied in any indoor/office settings. Protect your staff and kids

Key Benefits:

A place for learning is no place for pests

In any type of educational facility, it is essential for managers to ensure a safe learning and working environment, to protect reputation and to preserve assets. The precious resources of schools are better spent on proactive pest prevention – before infestations escalate to harm the people and property in your care. Uncontrolled pest populations can expand explosively. It’s crucial to act quickly at the first sign of a pest problem to prevent an infestation spreading across classrooms, halls, playgrounds, kitchens and libraries. No school wants pests in their common areas, yet these environments are ideal for pests to thrive with ample nesting areas and food. In this difficult habitat, you need the experts in pest control. Pest Disinfection Service

A Pest Disinfection Service is a unique and powerful weapon ensuring that everything is as clean and hygienic as possible. It takes pest control management to the next level protecting those important to you. Your Rentokil technician will apply the Pest Disinfection spray to the areas affected by pest activity. The application is food-safe, non-corrosive, non-staining, and safe on soft metals, plastics and fabrics. • Unique biocidal treatment contains a reactive barrier technology • Fast acting, and effective, against harmful micro-organisms • Provides long-term protection against the risk of bacteria, viruses, mould, fungi and spores. Using a unique biocidal solution with has been scientifically proven to protect against the spread of disease. It keeps treated areas contamination free between cleaning cycles. This is because it goes on working once dried, with no window of opportunity for germs to re-establish themselves. THE BURSAR : ISSUE 1 : 2019

• Protects people against pathogens • Effective against bacteria, viruses, moulds and fungal spores • Safe to use on fabrics, plastics, soft metals and food preparation areas Reduce the risk of illness by killing the bacteria carried by pests

Pests are not only destructive but can pose a risk to human health; they are prolific breeders and carriers of many nasty diseases. Through their relentless search for food and shelter, pests leave behind disease-causing pathogens and bacteria. They can spread these by contaminating food and water sources with their urine and faeces. Diseases transmitted by pests in Australia

Birds, flies, cockroaches and rodents are notorious for carrying bacteria both inside and outside their bodies, including salmonella, Hantavirus and E.Coli. Infections can occur via direct contact, through breathing in airborne particles or by consumption of contaminated food and water. Even bird droppings contain dangerous fungi and bacteria that can spread disease directly or as airborne spores! Your school can have peace of mind and Rentokil’s Pest Disinfection Service will protect those you care about by reducing the risk of illness by killing the bacteria carried by pests If you are responsible for a number of sites, these can all be incorporated into a single service agreement with an account manager to coordinate service delivery across all of your sites. Each individual site will be serviced by their local expert or pest specialist with discretion and sensitivity to the surrounds. Sport & Leisure

Five reasons why competitive sport is important in education Why competitive sport is important in education

It is inarguably accepted that a bit of healthy competition in any field is known to enhance motivation and generate increased effort from those competing. The sporting field is no exception to this rule. Whilst there will always be varying levels of sporting talent and interest across any group of people, the benefits that competitive sport provides are still accessible to all. There is a role for both competitive and noncompetitive sporting pursuits. Casual sports are a great way to get some exercise whilst enjoying time with friends, but there are a number of other advantages to sport that can only be found in competition.

Here are five reasons why competitive sport is important in education: Encourages higher standards of achievement

It’s only natural to apply more effort when the stakes are higher and less effort when the outcome is of less importance. With greater effort in sport comes greater improvement in a variety of different areas like skills, fitness, teamwork and potentially awards. Encourages physical activity

About Esperance Anglican Community School (EACS)

It is obviously possible to participate in physical activity in a non-competitive environment and many people do so on a regular basis. However, in a competitive environment, students will often push themselves harder in training and in matches. This extra effort results in improved fitness levels as well as extending an individual’s boundaries about their perception of what they are physically capable of.

OUR MISSION

Builds discipline

At Esperance Anglican Community School we aim to educate the whole person – in mind, body and spirit – as a unique individual each with their own talents and capabilities.’ This mission is expressed in more specific goals which provide the basis for the detailed strategies which allow the School to provide the education it espouses. OUR GOALS At Esperance Anglican Community School we believe that:

• Our School should be a safe place where people can grow and develop without fear or ridicule • We should nurture spiritual growth in all members of our community through the development of Christian belief as enshrined in the traditions of the Anglican Communion • All activities must be pursued to the highest possible standard to allow for the fulfilment of the talents with which we have been blessed • Our students should be encouraged to develop an appreciation of the need to understand, respect, serve and care for others and for our environment • Students should be encouraged to adopt a healthy lifestyle to promote their well- being through their participation in a range of activities • A commitment to high standards of behaviour, self-discipline and resilience will contribute to the quality of life in the School community • Students will learn most effectively when a love of learning is promoted and where creative, critical and reflective learning is encouraged • All students should be able to leave the School with the highest level of academic achievement consistent with their capabilities • Staff appointed to the School should be well-qualified and trained, and committed fully to the philosophy of the education provided here • Our facilities should be of the highest quality and developed with environmental sustainability as a key feature • Systems, including information technology, must be efficient and effective to facilitate the smooth operation of the School

THE BURSAR : ISSUE 1 : 2019

Competitive sport requires dedicated training and practice. Taking part in such training and seeing improvement helps students to understand that with hard work, often comes results. When they experience these improvements, their self-esteem grows and they broaden their limitations of what they can achieve. Goal setting is also an important part of competitive sports. At the start of a season, a coach will often guide students in setting team and individual goals to work towards. Good goal setting techniques are highly transferable skills that can be applied across all areas of schooling and life. Teaches how to lose well/deal with disappointment

Losing well is a skill best learnt early and learnt well. Competitive sport is the perfect place to develop this skill as many students are at an age where they are maturing and deciding what type of person they want to be. Engraining good sportsmanship early can ensure students carry these good practices across every aspect of their lives and into their adulthood. Equally as important is teaching students to win gracefully. Competitive sport, especially when the stakes are high and emotions invested, provides ample opportunity for these lessons to be taught, learnt and practiced. Builds camaraderie and teamwork

Team sports are one of the best examples to showcase the need for teamwork to achieve success. Regular training and competition provides regular community and bonding. Working together towards a common goal is one of the most effective ways to grow camaraderie and friendship. It’s this shared experience and emotion that builds loyalty and trust within a team. And it’s not just team sports that require team work. Athletes in individual sports also require support from their coach, friends and family, whom all share in the journey through the sporting season. Sport doesn’t have to be competitive in nature to be enjoyed, but there is no arguing with the advantages of engaging in competitive sports at school. Swimming Pools

A complex environment The operation of a swimming pool and spa facility is a highly involved and sometimes complex process. Operators of school swimming facilities must ensure that the health and safety of their staff and students are underpinned by proper processes across all areas of the facility.

Whilst the duties associated with maintaining pools and spas can be outsourced to external service providers, it is essential that one or more team members have an adequate understanding of how a pool and spa operates and the maintenance functions that are required. By performing maintenance regularly, minor changes in conditions and wear on equipment can be managed to reduce the incidence of unsafe conditions and downtime due to equipment repairs. Students are not the only ones who enjoy swimming. Pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, fungi and other parasites can flourish in pools and spas unless the appropriate steps are taken to control their numbers.

Photo: South Pacific Pools

Pools are used by many people of varying age and health status. Bathers introduce a range of pollutants to pool water, including micro-organisms, saliva, fat, urine, skin, hair, sunscreen lotion and other foreign matter. Operators have a duty of care to provide facilities that are safe, hygienic and comfortable for bathers. So, it makes good business and risk sense to have a sound knowledge of pool and spa maintenance and operating procedures. Operating the Pool & Spa Environment

Pool and spa facilities will have different requirements that may be dictated by legislation, the design and nature of operation of the facility, bather loads and operating hours. As a public facility, the establishment must ensure that the pool and spa is under the control and management of a dedicated team member who is knowledgeable and competent to operate the plant and maintain the pool water quality. Peripheral staff should also be exposed to training in plant operation and water treatment measures required to maintain water quality. They should receive proper training to gain an appropriate understanding of basic water chemistry and the testing, water treatment, plant operation and the general procedures required to maintain good water quality. Currently, in Australia there is legislation in place to regulate and guide the operations of a public pool and spa facilities in each jurisdiction. Aligned to these are Australian Standards, Occupational Health and Safety requirements as well as many other important guidance documents. The pool operator should ensure that those left in charge have a working knowledge of the Regulations and can ensure that the treatment plant continues to provide pool water that meets these requirements. They should also be able to identify problems and know how to obtain corrective advice. THE BURSAR : ISSUE 1 : 2019

Swimming Pools/Maintenance

Keeping the pool water safe with proper pool management There is a serious side to operating and maintaining high bather load swimming pools and spas such as those in educational facilities like schools and universities.

An incorrect water balance, poor filtration or insufficient sanitiser can cause bather discomfort, skin irritation, pool staining, dirty water and illness, and lead to potential risk from complaints and worse still litigation. Do you manage pools:

• • • • •

That have high bather loads? with a high percentage of use by children below five years of age? with a water turnover time in excess of six hours? wading pools, spas or hydrotherapy pools? with shared filtration and water circulation systems?

If you answer “yes” to any of the above questions, you may have specific areas of high risk that could benefit from the adoption of a structured approach for pool management. Often the swimming pool plant and equipment and the water management regimes in place can’t cope with the extreme demands of peak periods and can result in cloudy unhealthy water. Having routine maintenance programs in place like checking pool pumps, seals and gaskets, chemically cleaning the filter and correctly balancing the water, can not only save thousands of dollars on costly repairs and excess chemicals, but ensures your system can cope with these extremes. Daily maintenance regimes are essential to ensure a continued healthy swimming environment.

The disinfectant form of chlorine is “free residual chlorine.” It is also known as “free available chlorine” or “free chlorine” It is strong and safe when used properly and is still the most popular form of disinfection. Free residual chlorine can also oxidise ammonia, some other organic compounds and some organic nitrogen introduced into the pool by urine or perspiration. Free chlorine however can combine with ammonia to form compounds, known as chloramines. It is these chloramines that contribute to the cloudiness and the strong odour that is often noticeable in high bather load pools. They cause eye stinging and reduces the ability of chlorine to disinfect. Chloramines are also known as “combined residual chlorine” and should be kept to a minimum. This is done by adding more chlorine (or an alternative product) to oxidise them over a period of time without bathers in the pool. This treatment process is often referred to as oxidising, super chlorinating or shocking. Another important factor to consider when managing these pools is that the higher the pH above 7 the less the disinfection power of free chlorine. pH needs to be properly controlled in a swimming pool and spa pool when chlorine is used, and automatic adjustment is recommended to levels between 7.2 and 7.8. To maintain healthy clear water in high bather situations, the swimming pool or spa pool needs to be designed and operated to enhance the action of the disinfectant.

All people who use high bather load swimming pools and spas are susceptible to infection. These pools are more likely to be contaminated with disease causing organisms than domestic swimming pools because they are open to community contamination.

The installation and use of automatic disinfectant dosing systems and pH correction systems using automatic controllers receiving feedback information from chemical sensing probes, however, are strongly recommended.

Contamination can come from many sources but are mainly associated with bathers. These organisms may be brought into a pool on a bather’s skin, and in their saliva, urine and faeces. The organisms may also be introduced from dust, bird droppings, make-up water and soil carried on bathers’ feet.

Some simple checks that will assist with effective pool management:

The type of infections that are often caused from inadequately treated pool water (or surrounding surfaces) can range from eye, ear and skin infections through to more serious gastrointestinal illnesses. Some of these disease causing organisms live and may even grow in pool and spa water unless the pool water is properly and continuously disinfected. Doing regular water tests and taking note of any changes in the pool water clarity can help you manage potential problems. The clarity of the pool water is a fail-proof indication that something is not quite right. Cloudy water or dullness is a clear sign that some sort of treatment is required. Although chlorine is an effective disinfectant, it does not instantly kill all nasty bugs, some organisms, such as the parasite Cryptosporidium, are highly resistant to chlorine concentrations routinely used in pools. THE BURSAR : ISSUE 1 : 2019

• • • • • • • •

Ensure all equipment is running correctly Ensure all equipment is appropriately sized for the pool volume and bather load Ensure there are no areas of poor pool circulation (i.e., “dead spots”) Encourage patrons to practice healthy swimming practices Improved hygiene before and during swimming (e.g., showering, toilet breaks for young children, (and appropriate nappy changing) refrain from swimming while ill with diarrhea and avoid swallowing pool water.

It is recommended that pool operators/managers develop a pool management plan, that incorporates the principles outlined in this document, that automatic chemical monitoring and dosing systems are installed, and records of water quality testing are maintained for at least a two-year period. To assist with any aspect of swimming pool and spa troubleshooting or for the implementation of effective pool management plans contact your local Poolwerx technician by emailing a request to service@poolwerx.com.au.

Confidence – Living for any amount of time in a culture that’s different from home can

help prepare students for the future in ways more profound than any camp or holiday can. Overcoming challenges while travelling help students grow confidence and prepare them for life’s obstacles. THE BURSAR : ISSUE 1 : 2019

tough. But doing it shows that a person is interested enough in the rest of the world, and confident enough to venture out and discover other parts of the world. This is a character trait that’s very appealing to employers.

Growth & Independence – While away from home and the ease of a regular support

system, students have opportunities to see what they are capable of accomplishing by themselves. Travelling allows students to develop themselves in ways that can’t be achieved without stepping outside of their comfort zone, becoming more mature, independent and self-aware.

71 Individuality – Travel provides experiences to define a person’s place and purpose and establishes lifelong values and priorities. Career Opportunities – Employers view students that have travelled as well-rounded

as they have shown not only a commitment to their education but a confidence to venture out and discover new things as well as their ability to adapt to new situations.

Appreciation – Getting away from home is also a chance to allow a student to realise

what they miss most. Experiencing another place and culture is an opportunity to appreciate what they already have and realise the importance of the little things that often go unnoticed.

New Friends – Cultural immersion through travels can also help break down language

barriers and open new channels of lifelong communication. Exploring a new place opens doors to establish new friendships and relationships that never would have been acquired without travelling. Article provided by WorldStrides

School excursions – a track record As community access to domestic and global travel becomes easier and the norm, expectations are also increasing for travel opportunities within school communities. This is because excursions provide real-world learning opportunities for your students which cannot be replicated within the classroom nor the school environment. When presenting travel opportunities to your school community, it’s important to know that you’re offering a quality excursion experience and dealing with a reputable company that can resolve issues should they arise during your tour. At Macquarie Educational Tours, we’ve been honing our excursion skills both in the office and out on tour, for over twenty years. Annually, we facilitate over 18,000 students and teachers on multi-day tours. These often involve arrangements for both land and air travel and the occasional sea passage; overnight stays at numerous destinations within the one itinerary; with multiple venues, activities and programs each day. What could possibly go wrong! We have developed excellent systems and industry relationships over twenty years, to deliver consistently high-quality excursion experiences including 24/7 support throughout your entire excursion! Macquarie Educational Tours is unique in that we provide ‘end to end’ tour arrangements. We are the booking agent as well as the tour operator meaning we conduct the tours that we book! We therefore look after every aspect of your excursion, including contingency plans if required, allowing you to relax and enjoy the excursion experience with your students!

Student Tours

Travel – an important pillar to fostering global citizenship At Student Horizons, we are avid believers that experiential learning through travel matters; encouraging global awareness and internationalising a student. We believe that travel supports the preservation of cultures and traditions through equipping students with knowledge of other countries and their cultures; giving them a strong sense of global interconnectedness.

Travel leads to learning about and understanding other cultures firsthand, breeding an understanding for other beliefs and societies, broadening minds and perspectives of the world in which we live. It is an essential ingredient for creating global citizens, necessary for enabling them to get to know and understand the world. Yes, technology has made the world a smaller place. We can learn so much through reading, watching videos and hearing stories from others, however, nothing beats firsthand experience. When you visit a country for real, it helps break down barriers and prejudices. Preconceived ideas disburse leaving the mind open to experience. Here at Student Horizons, we believe that being a good citizen begins at school through active and experiential learning. Experiential learning is all about internalising the experience and this is exactly what our tours provide students. Learning through experience, not just from books, travel improves a student’s learning by providing real-

world experience in subjects they are taught in school such as mathematics, science and history. It’s twofold, as it also equips students with life skills from cultural understanding and how they interact with people whose backgrounds differ from their own. Being a good global citizen begins at school, particularly during a child’s formative years, which is timely given the brain is so ready to absorb knowledge and when they’re more capable of stepping up to a challenge. Travel and physical exploration help shape young people’s life choices and values. Whether a fantastic experience or more challenging, these experiences are life changing; creating memories that last a lifetime, all of which play an intricate part in shaping young minds. To me, the important role that experiential travel plays in education and its contribution in developing a well-rounded global citizen, especially under today’s more pressurised classroom-based academic curriculum, has become even more evident. Taking the classroom to the world and encouraging active learning through physical exploration is a must for ensuring the next generation develops a deep understanding for today’s ever-changing world.

Educational Tours

Genuine learning outcomes from overseas travel Students today are growing up in a fast-changing world, where the ability to communicate and collaborate with their peers across the globe is essential.

Global education can promote open-mindedness, leading to new thinking about the world and, very often, the desire to take action for change. As students learn to take responsibility for their actions, they respect and value diversity and see themselves as (active) global citizens, who can contribute to a more peaceful, just, and sustainable world. It becomes more and more important to them to have the ability, experience and knowledge to make a real difference. On one hand, significant global opportunities have become available for those who embrace and excel in a changing environment. On the other hand, the global shift in future employment opportunities, global social issues and the geopolitical landscape have created enormous uncertainty. Here at Latitude Group Travel, we believe that nothing compares to the power of overseas travel to nurture an appreciation of and respect for social, cultural and religious diversity, a sense of global citizenship and a responsibility for more than what’s just in their own back yards.

How to ensure your tours have genuine learning outcomes Set your vision and purpose

While any overseas experience may still end up having a positive effect, the inclusion of experiential learning activities can assist in achieving the goal of improving global competence. Rich educational tours expose students to experiences that directly impact their futures and open their eyes to a real world of opportunities of which they were previously unaware. Additionally, these experiences should significantly add to the real likelihood of a student to become an active global citizen, which will not occur if the tour just focuses on sightseeing, because there is no impetus for this sort of growth.

One of the best ways to guarantee a successful tour is to be very clear about the vision and purpose of the trip. This also makes your tour operator more accountable and clear objectives are also much easier to measure.

If your tour has a lot of scheduled sightseeing and “free time”, you may need to question the sort of outcomes you will be getting, if any. Consider using a tour operator that is forward thinking and has a passion for actually educating your students.

Can teachers clearly articulate how the tour will not only broaden the horizons of its participants, but intentionally put them into activities, situations and scenarios that will deepen learning, open their eyes to new thinking and potentially introduce them to a network of global mentors? Do tour operators even understand what is possible for students in providing a range of genuine learning opportunities across a range of knowledge and skills?

Latitude Group Travel packs its tours full of experiential learning activities. Make sure the ratio between experiential learning and sightseeing is high – in fact the higher the better! Our tip?: Count them!

Latitude Group Travel staff take a full brief for each tour and ensure that we understand what a successful tour will look like for the school. Custom Designed and Curriculum Linked

As part of your vision and purpose for travelling, you may have identified the need to cover specific curriculum as part of your tour. Ensure your tour operator is referring to your curriculum and delivering a tour filled with experiential learning activities, which encourage students to connect your specific classroom learning to real-world experiences. The tour should be custom designed for you and flexible enough to allow you to include specific locations or, more essentially, activities that engender those genuine learning outcomes. Latitude Group Travel custom designs each and every tour from scratch – no off-the-shelf itineraries- so you can be sure that the school is getting the best possible tour actually matched to its desired outcomes. Experiential Learning vs Sightseeing

Overseas touring provides a unique opportunity to include experiential learning opportunities. When done right, experiential learning activities should encourage deeper learning and inquiry, present authentic applications for previous learning and potentially expose students to real-world experts in their fields. THE BURSAR : ISSUE 1 : 2019

Tour Operator Accountability

Many tours run in exactly the same fashion, with the same tour operator for years - no questions asked, no comparisons made. Student travel should be seen as an opportunity to expand their horizons beyond that of the classroom and should definitely offer activities and opportunities that cannot be replicated through family travel. It is imperative that you hold your tour operator accountable for delivering true learningbased travel. The significant, transformational, momentum that can impel children in the right direction, if the right tour is planned, cannot be underestimated. Tour planning requires dedication and a genuine zeal for the cause of education – so selecting the right tour operator is far more important than you may realise. The other issue is that a few dollars here or there in the initial quotation means nothing in comparison with the impact that you can engender for your students, which can be life-long, life-changing and life-affirming! In today’s competitive and constantly evolving world, it is imperative that schools make every effort to ensure that their travel programs are carefully designed, with a clear vision and objectives and a genuine attention to the incredible impact they can have on student’s lives and their futures. Master Bus an A-grade teacher’s pet Huge, handsome, safe and secure, the Renault Master Bus ticks all the boxes for school purchasing staff looking for a 12-seater workhorse.

Renault offers a three year /unlimited km factory warranty on the Master Bus and capped price servicing for the first three regular maintenance visits to the dealer, making the it extremely economical to own. Depending on the use profile, the Master can travel up to 30,000km or 12 months between routine servicing pitstops.

Renault has been selling the 12-seater Master Bus in Australia for three years, and it has become a firm favourite with schools around the country.

For even greater long-term peace-of-mind, Renault offers an extended warranty for up to two years beyond the standard warranty.

With its spacious interior providing plenty of headroom for both the basketball and netball teams, and huge luggage bay behind the rear seats which could eliminate the need to tow a trailer, the Renault Master Bus is perfectly sized for a variety of typical day-to-day school activities and excursions. If you want to tow, the Master Bus can pull 2.5-tonnes.

The Renault Master Bus is priced from $61,490 drive away for business buyers.

One of the most attractive features of the Renault Master Bus from a school administrator’s perspective is the comprehensive suite of active and passive safety systems fitted as standard. It’s not just the big brakes, excellent visibility and a commanding driving position that help the driver avoid an accident in the first place.

“Our ownership experience-enhancement package of capped price servicing, long servicing intervals, and three-year/unlimited km warranty with optional warranty extension delivers exceptional peace-of-mind.

In the event of an incident, anti-lock brakes and electronic stability control give the driver the best possible chance of minimising any impact, keeping the students safe. Also standard is hill start assist, Grip X-Tend (for greater traction), driver and passenger front airbags, as well as a side airbag for the driver, reverse parking sensors and a reversing camera. Three-point lap/sash seatbelts are fitted to each seat. Students will be delighted by the availability of USB power points for charging up personal devices, the effective heater and the separate air conditioning system for the passenger cabin. To avoid the all too common damage to roof-mounted air conditioners on rival vehicles, the Renault Master Bus has the unit mounted inside the rear of the cabin. Like all Renault light commercial vehicles, the Master Bus is powered by a fuel-efficient four-cylinder diesel engine, and it drives through a six-speed automated gearbox, allowing for a smooth and fuss free journey for both driver and passengers. The Renault Master Bus can be driven by anyone with a standard passenger car licence. THE BURSAR : ISSUE 1 : 2019

“While a low purchase price is undoubtedly a key attraction of the Renault Master Bus for school purchasing departments, there’s a lot more to like than just the sticker price,” says Renault Australia’s LCV Product Manager, Lyndon Healey.

Renault Master Bus passes school test

One of the earliest adopters of the Renault Master Bus was the School for Student Leadership’s Snowy River Campus in Gippsland, Victoria, which took delivery of two identical specification vehicles in 2016. The buses were purchased to be used at the outdoor adventure school, based near Marlo, at the mouth of the Snowy River. The school, Year 9 students spend up to 10 weeks at a time exploring pursuits such as surfing, hiking, kayaking and mountain biking, while learning self-reliance and leadership skills. Principal Mark Reeves said the Renault Master Bus met all the School’s requirements from functional, economical and operational perspectives. “The Renault Master Bus seemed to be exactly the right size. It is very spacious inside and it can be driven on a regular car license by all of my staff,” he said. “Pricing was critical for us and the Master Bus comes fully equipped for our needs, at about $60,000. Annual servicing, teamed with service intervals of up to 30,000km are key benefits for us, as we only cover around 12,000km per year, so we should only need one annual visit to the dealership. Some other buses need a service every 10,000km or six months.

79 The bus roof is also rated to carry 200kg including the roof rack. The Renault Master Bus is 6.2m long, 2.47m wide (2.07m wide with mirrors folded), has 200mm of ground clearance, and kerb-to-kerb turning circle of 15.7m. The Renault Master Bus offers exceptional interior space with an especially impressive 1900mm of headroom, allowing a typical Australian-sized male to stand up without his head connecting with the ceiling. In spite of this, the overall vehicle height is only 2475mm, thanks to the front wheel-drive layout. The seating layout is 3/2/2-1/4 with a centre aisle, making access easy for all types of passengers from youth to older Australians. Each seat has a three-point seatbelt, while two seats have ISOFIX connections and child seat top tether straps, in accordance with local regulations. A secondary passenger compartment air conditioning system is standard and has been designed to cope with Australian conditions. The blower unit is located over the luggage bay and blows into the passenger area, complementing the front-mounted standard van system.

“The Master Bus is simple to drive, and as we have about 20 staff at each campus, and any of them could be called on to drive it, this is important. “We do a fair bit on dirt and the Bus is very stable. It has good road holding and steering. It feels safe and secure, and has excellent ABS. It leaves the old bus for dead. “Our bus came with an electric sliding side door and the students really love the USB chargers for their iPods and iPhones. Because we have patchy coverage for free-to-air radio, the kids bring their own music along. One of the biggest surprises was the aircraftstyle cabin heater which runs down the length of the cabin. It’s a real winner,” Mark said. “The seats are really comfy, there’s plenty of room inside, and with the front-wheel drive and low flat floor in the luggage area, and we can store all of the students’ adventure packs. We also tow a trailer for the kayaks,” he said. “When the students aren’t complaining about something it is a sign they are content, and so far the Master has passed muster with them,” Mark said. The School for Student Leadership is a Victorian Department of Education and Training (DET) initiative offering a unique residential education experience for Year 9 students. The curriculum focuses on personal development and team learning projects sourced from students’ home regions. There are three campuses in iconic locations across Victoria. The Alpine School Campus is located at Dinner Plain in the Victorian Alps. Snowy River Campus is near the mouth of the Snowy River at Marlo in east Gippsland. The third site is adjacent to Mount Noorat near Camperdown in Victoria’s Western District, and is called Gnurad-Gundidj. Renault Master Bus specification in detail

The front-wheel drive Renault Master Bus is powered by a frugal 2.3-litre, 4-cylinder 110kW/350Nm Euro 5-compliant engine that has been so effective in powering the Master van range.

A glazed emergency hatch in the roof, fire extinguisher. reclining seat backs for the two middle rows, hard-wearing vinyl flooring, original equipment-quality interior trim mouldings, durable, soft and attractive two-tone grey jacquard fabric seat facings that match the front seats, and the sliding step are all part of the feature-rich standard specification. For drivers undertaking longer journeys on harsh surfaces the optional Isringhausen® Driver Suspension Seat could provide be a fatigue-reducing solution. Also available as an option pack are the electrically powered sliding left-hand side door, auto headlights and rain sensing wipers, R-Link Enhanced Media and Navigation System with the seven-inch Touchscreen, hands-free entry, four USB charging sockets, LED roof lighting, side and rear window curtains, premium carpeting, reclining rear row seats and an integrated rear step to facilitate easier access to the load area. Lane Departure Warning is also available as part of the option pack, offering a further degree of active safety. Renault’s Capped Price Servicing offer provides a high degree of certainty for running costs, especially useful when budgets are tight. The capped maintenance costs cover the first three scheduled maintenance services, which are either every year or up to 30,000 km depending on the operating environment. The programme includes genuine Renault parts, lubricants and labour for these services, and the peace-of-mind knowing that the most you’ll pay for a service is caped (presently at $599 per service). Renault also offers up to four years of Roadside Assistance, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, covering all of Australia and including breakdowns, flat tyres or even running out of fuel.

A full complement of active and passive safety features is standard along with a reversing camera and rear parking sensors, cruise control and speed limiter, Bluetooth hands-free connectivity, Hill Start Assist and Grip X-Tend – a traction enhancer for slippery surfaces.

As with all Renault LCVs offered in Australia the Master Bus is available from the entire Renault authorised dealer network across the country. In addition, Renault Financial Services is ready to help educational establishments choose the most cost-effective way to finance the purchase of a new Master Bus.

With a rated 3.9-tonne GVM, the 12-seater bus has ample comfort, space and payload (1252kg) for passengers and their luggage, while the 2.5-tonne towing capacity is identical to that of commercial versions.

Recruitment

The evolution of education recruitment Achieving quality learning in a rapidly changing world

With an ever growing and evolving world, education and teaching have become more important than ever – and as a result, the spotlight on Australia’s education industry has never been more focussed. This means finding passionate educators that are not only skilled, but also fit with your culture, is crucial to ensure learning outcomes are delivered to a high standard. Skill shortages in Education

With the volume of quality applicants through traditional recruitment methods (e.g. job boards and referrals) waning, education providers all over Australia are feeling the pinch of the candidate-short market. Teachers don’t want to apply for jobs anymore, they want to be approached – and more importantly, they’re looking for the right fit rather than just a job. There are simply not enough high calibre candidates to meet the demand, meaning strong candidates have choices and they can afford to be selective about their next move. How does this affect you? EDC acoustics at Trinity Grammar School Trinity Grammar School at Summer Hill in Sydney was searching for the right sound system for performances of the classic musical Pirates of Penzance in their 700-seat James Wilson Hogg Assembly Hall.

tm stagetec systems provided the school with a customised EDC Acoustics system comprising of a single EDC mid/high cabinet a side and a pair of 15-inch subs, and Damon Pieterse, Audio Visual Manager at Trinity Grammar was very pleased with the results. “The ability to steer the sound both horizontally and vertically provided consistent level to every seat in the house,” Mr Pieterse said. “The gain before feedback was also astonishing. We had 10 live headsets at times in front of the PA system and often within one metre of the ground-stacked cabinets and did not encounter any issues throughout the production. “The Trinity Grammar School production team were blown away by the performance of the sound system,” said Mr Pieterse. EDC plane array technology creates 3D wave fronts. Each speaker is capable of vertical and horizontal steering as well as customisable wave shaping to suit the space. All EDC products are designed and engineered in Australia.

Security Systems

School security – easy as ABC? By John Fleming, General Manager of the Australian Security Industry Association Limited (ASIAL).

Every school day, schools are entrusted to provide a safe and healthy learning environment for students. Families and communities expect schools to keep students safe from threats and hazards.

Whilst security has become a growing challenge for school leaders, schools in Australia remain among the safest places a child can be. Ensuring this continues to be the case is a challenge that administrators have to grapple with on a daily basis in an ever changing environment. To maintain a secure environment, school administrators need to identify all of the potential security risks they face and formulate a plan to control and manage these risks. Among the areas of concern include the threat of harm to staff and children from unauthorised persons on site, theft and damage due to burglary incidents, malicious damage to the school and fire. In developing a strategy the approach will include a combination of prevention, response and recovery actions. An essential requirement for any school is knowing who is working at your school or visiting at all times. An important first step to improving the security of a school building is identifying all the doors and openings in the facility to determine ingress and egress points. Measures that limit entry to entrances can make it easier to check and control who enters and leaves the school. Other options include perimeter security systems, video surveillance systems and more robust doors and hardware on individual openings. An effective security plan should be simple, clear and flexible. It must be compatible with existing plans such as evacuation and fire safety strategies. Everyone needs to be clear about what they should to do in a particular incident and once made, your plans must be followed. It is important to follow the mantra of ‘plan, train and maintain’. Failing to include this as part of your staff induction and training and practicing from time to time, may in the event of an emergency prove disastrous. A good security plan isn’t solely the responsibility of the security professional you engage. All staff should embrace and understand the need for security and that security is viewed as everyone’s responsibility. By effectively communicating this to all in the school community, you can avoid the risk of people doing what they think is best which may actually compound a problem. By engaging a licensed security professional to conduct a thorough risk assessment you will be able to determine the most appropriate measures you need to put in place. In developing a holistic approach to security a combination of security measures are required. Among some of the elements to consider include: THE BURSAR : ISSUE 1 : 2019

Electronic Security Systems

Monitored security alarm systems can provide early detection of potential burglars and duress protection for staff. Alarm systems use sensors which detect and trigger an alarm at the control panel, the sensors used could include, passive infrared movement sensors (PIR) vibration sensors, glass break sensors, magnetic contacts. In the event of an alarm being activated the alarm system is typically connected by multiple technologies such as wired Internet Protocol (IP) and wireless networks. These monitoring paths can provide in built redundancy, so that if one path is down the other continues to transmit alarms signals from the alarm control panel to a monitoring centre. The operators can check what type of alarm has been activated and then take action by calling the nominated contacts such as key holders, a security patrol response or police. Access Control Systems

Access control systems are designed to provide the ability to control, monitor and restrict the movement of people, assets in and out of the school. Access Control is essential to protect staff, students and assets, helping you limit access to approved personnel or parents / guardians at appropriate times when picking up students or entering the centre. Access control can be scalable from a single entrance door to a large integrated security network. These systems have the potential to integrate with other systems such as time and attendance, visitor management. These functions also reduce administration costs. Access control systems can also help cut energy bills by reducing energy wastage and improve a school’s environmental footprint. Not only can the access control system achieve its primary function of monitoring the flow of authorised personnel around the school it can provide a wealth of data on which areas of the building are occupied and when. Identifying the usage of a building will greatly help in reducing power consumption and ultimately produce substantial cost savings. The key area for power saving are in adjusting lighting, heating, ventilation and air-conditioning in areas of the building that are not occupied. Video Surveillance Systems (VSS)

The growing use of the term Video Surveillance Systems (VSS) reflects the rapid growth in the use of Internet Protocol products and networks. VSS is a visual surveillance technology with the capability to monitor a variety of environments and activities. It is now an integral component in the design of cost effective security solutions, which deter, detect, help supervise and verify activity associated with security or safety risks.

87

Advancements in security cameras and recording equipment have made cameras and video surveillance one of the most valuable security and asset prevention solutions available. Video surveillance security systems are reliable, efficient and simple to use. As the overall security industry continues to move towards IP based video surveillance, deploying video surveillance solutions has become a key requirement. A strong advantage of IP network-based VSS over analogue video systems is scalability. IP-based systems scale easily from one to thousands of cameras in increments of a single camera. This makes IP-based solutions ideal for growing a system as budgets allow. VSS helps with protection and security for staff and students in your care, assisting to satisfy parents that their children are in a safe place. It also helps to avoid misunderstandings and potentially false accusations by providing vital evidence that helps protect your school and staff from any unfair accusations Physical Security

Fencing and gates for access in and out of school grounds is an option commonly used for the safety and security of students. They can provide an effective means of preventing students from leaving school unsupervised, as well as protecting against unauthorised access. A lighting system at night-time can also act as a simple, but effective means of reducing the opportunity for people to hide in the grounds and supports the capture of good quality images on a Video Surveillance System. Security officers / patrols

Schools can also benefit from engaging security providers to perform patrols of school grounds outside of operating hours. This acts as a deterrent to would be thieves and vandals and provides an opportunity to undertake routine checks that the grounds are secure. It is important to understand, school security is not a quick fix solution. Much like BandAids, quick fixes don’t last long and need to be reapplied often. A good security plan needs to be carefully thought through and implemented. It should be integrated into the day-to-day routine and culture of all staff so that it is not treated as a separate measure. It should also be regularly reviewed to ensure it remains effective and responsive to changing threats. Having developed a plan, it is important to select the right security provider to implement it. Reputable security providers are committed to providing a quality service and play an active role through their professional membership of peak industry bodies, such as ASIAL. They possess the appropriate insurances, train their employees well, use only appropriately licensed security personnel and provide wages and conditions in accordance with a lawful industrial instrument. Those that don’t will compromise the security and reputation of your school. Do Your Homework

Making the right choice may not be as simple as ABC, however by doing your homework and conducting a thorough due diligence of potential providers, you will place yourself in a much better position to get the security you need.

About the Author John Fleming is General Manager of the Australian Security Industry Association Limited (ASIAL). ASIAL is the peak body for security professionals in Australia, its members account for approximately 85% of the security services delivered in Australia. 10 tips for choosing the right security provider Choosing the right security provider shouldn’t be a lucky dip. To make the right choice, it is vital to conduct a thorough due-diligence review of potential providers. To help you assess the credentials of a security provider, some of the criteria to consider. 1. Appropriate/current insurance cover – view documents and ensure that they are current and provide coverage suitable to your requirements. 2. A good reputation – investigate to ensure they have maintained good relationships with customers, are trustworthy and dependable. 3. References – request and check references to obtain a valuable insight as to the reliability and performance of the security firm. ASIC and business search tools to check trading history can be very helpful. 4. Training – review the security firm’s training regime and request supporting documentation to support their assertions. 5. Equipment – ensure equipment to be provided by the security firm is fit for purpose and meets all work health and safety requirements. 6. Costs – understand financial arrangements with the security firm regarding the planned invoicing cycle, rise and fall cost management, cost drivers, rate reviews, additional charges and award/agreement impact. 7. Written contract – defining the rights and responsibilities between client and security provider should be detailed and written, including dispute resolution processes, contract review, extensions and termination. 8. Management – experienced management personnel with specialist expertise in the security industry will ensure effective delivery and well-trained and supervised staff. 9. Security officers/technician qualifications – you should request evidence that only appropriately licensed and trained personnel work on site. Licensing requirements vary from state to state, for more information visit https://www.asial.com.au/resources/security-licensing. 10. ASIAL Membership – the ASIAL Member logo is a security provider’s mark of distinction. To become a member, a security company, whether large or small, has to meet the highest standards of quality and service. To find an ASIAL Member visit www.asial.com.au.

Locksmiths

FROM MECHANICAL LOCKS TO MOBILE KEYS The benefits of electronic locking systems Ever since the first mechanical locking mechanisms were created several thousand years ago, locksmiths have been creating increasingly complex keys to enable the safe and reliable opening of all kinds of locks. But what is a key? Basically, a shared secret. The carefully designed and cut bittings of a key are a secret created by the locksmith to be issued to an access seeker, with access being revoked through the rekeying of a lock. In today’s environment of high-tech gadgetry, electronic locking systems are essentially a new way of sharing a secret and associating it with an access role. They come with many advantages for both commercial and residential projects - any building where the security and safety of students, employees, patients, residents or guests are important.

Ease of use

Electronic locking systems designed by leading manufacturers such as SALTO Systems, are designed to be easy and intuitive. In just a few steps, administrators can login and readily differentiate who has access by physical location as well as duration - even for short-term visitors such as contractors or guests. The flexibility of these systems lets you change access plans easily. Says Dennis Mavropoulos, Channel Manager of SALTO Systems, “New cloud based management systems such as SALTO KS require no software installation or the added expense of a fully wired electronic product. You can literally grant or block access for guests or staff via an app from anywhere, anytime.”

It’s cool (and smart!) to stay ahead of the curve

Networked without wires, online battery-operated electronic locks are a cost-effective and time-saving alternative to traditional mechanical locking systems and full hard-wired access control solutions.

Consumers and businesses alike are showing a keen interest in connected security, and from all indications we’re sitting at the beginning of a bell curve. Recent research from Telsyte, Connecting Australia, suggested there’ll be an average of 37 connected devices going into homes by 2022, up from 17 last year; the main area of interest being security and intruder detection.

Electronic locks can also be integrated into existing building alarm systems, panic buttons, fire alarms, and CCTV systems. For example, once activated, a fire alarm could signal the access control system to open all locks automatically, for safety.

THE BURSAR : ISSUE 1 : 2019

The Master Locksmiths and SALTO Systems working together

SALTO Systems has been supplying access control solutions to the locksmithing industry for many years, and is one of a select number of Trade Members of the Master Locksmiths Association of Australasia Ltd (MLAA). The development of new lock technology, and electronic locking solutions, requires developers, manufacturers, locksmiths and consumers to work together to ensure the solutions developed meet the security, operational and financial needs of the consumer.

Users can also open doors with convenient and flexible credentials; by smartphone, PIN number, or smart key card.

Enhanced security at reduced cost

Issuing credentials and revoking access is simple and quickly done. The system completely eliminates the security risks related to lost physical keys and the costs of replacing them. Coupled with real-time audit trails, these features not only reduce the total cost of owning and managing a set of locks, but they also allow facility managers to respond far more quickly to threats or breaches. If required, these systems can even incorporate special features such as the ability to trigger, within seconds, a complete lock down in an emergency.

offer this freedom of choice regarding system layout, type and number of access points will be in high demand.

Need to give the babysitter access to the house while still at work? With residential smart locks such as Danalock, you can send ‘keys’ via mobile phone with an app or schedule in regular access times. That’s pretty cool convenience, and the more advanced electronic locks will work with multiple smart home controllers such as Google Nest, SmartThings and Homekit, and can be accessed via your voice assistant of choice including Google Home, Alexa and Siri. On the commercial side, end users will increasingly demand a seamless and innovative experience they can offer their staff, guests and customers. Providers who can

Grounds Management

School maintenance strategies to help school leaders better focus on themselves School administrators used to be able to focus mainly, if not solely, on curriculum planning and student well-being. Not so nowadays. While still core focus areas, these responsibilities have been joined by an ever-growing list of responsibilities that include maintenance, budgets, school presentation and safety.

Recent studies suggest that time spent on maintenance activities leave school administrators – principals, senior school executives, bursars and property managers – with less capacity to fulfil their core responsibilities, even when they share its burden. How then can all of this be juggled efficiently?

With strategic outsourcing of school maintenance, whereby schools enlist external help for anything from individual projects to long-term grounds upgrading and aspects of facility maintenance, workloads can be reduced or better balanced. This also eases stress, helping those responsible for the performance of the school’s facilities and the presentation of its assets perform – and feel – better overall. Lessening headaches around school maintenance puts students and the curriculum once again on centre stage, and reclaims precious personal time. Easing maintenance stress

The NSW Department of Education found that principals spend 40 per cent of their time ‘managing their school’: facility upkeep, technology issues, tree audits, minor asset repairs, building maintenance, and other ad-hoc tasks crucial to the school’s presentation and operations needing immediate attention. Understandably, these exacerbate personal stress levels.

© Programmed Property Services

Making maintenance rather than school teams work harder

Accessing external help through professionals specialising in school maintenance, such as Programmed, enables schools to: • Avoid having to dilute time and resources on maintenance • Effectively address requirements that may involve legislative compliance • Quickly access specialist skills needed to resolve maintenance issues, especially ad-hoc or emergency ones • Access quality, well-maintained maintenance equipment and technology without the need for costly expenditure unrelated to education and learning • Budget with confidence. A maintenance schedule will outline tasks and make costs known beforehand, thus helping to avoid unforeseen costs or budget blowouts. With the flexibility to outsource as much or as little as required, schools ensure they are always in control. This ability for schools to determine or structure how they want their maintenance requirements to be met helps the school achieve the best results possible. This helps everyone to sleep better, knowing that the school they look after is safe and well maintained. Find out how to build an efficient maintenance strategy for your school that will yield improvements on both organisational and personal levels. This FREE School Maintenance Efficiencies whitepaper discusses the options around maintenance and outsourcing that will help schools reclaim precious time, energy and resources. To reduce this toll on personnel, consider the options outsourcing presents.

Outsourcing can be useful for clearing backlog maintenance or completing important projects, such as a repaint, a landscaping task or remodelling of an existing space for improved functionality, in shorter timeframes and with great quality outcomes. It is also able to help meet on-going requirements to keep the school looking well-presented all year round.

110 Outdoor Furniture + Water Fountains

Maximise outdoor spaces: three case studies Your outdoor spaces support many important aspects of school life - providing places to play, learn, meet, make friends, socialise over lunch, share stories and sit quietly in reflection.

Bringing the classroom outdoors is a growing trend in Australian education, with an increasing body of evidence to support its benefits for learning, social skills and health. Whether students are studying ecosystems, sustainability, growing vegetables, observing the weather, mapping the playground or simply participating in lessons outside, furnishing your spaces for these activities can unlock opportunities to maximise their use. Here are three case studies to outline how different schools have used furniture to improve, transform and add amenity to their outdoor areas. Petersham Public School

This urban school created a Sustainable Outdoor Learning Area through a series of zones to support different activities and learning outcomes. The school and its P&C are driven to instill values of sustainable living and appreciation for nature and the environment in students. A Garden Classroom features long tables and benches facing a chalkboard for more formal lessons, for students to sit together and engage with their teacher. A second bench underneath the board helps the smallest students to reach and contribute. The classroom is set near a chicken coop and vegetable beds, which the students take turns to care for and harvest. The Library Lawn is an uplifting and inclusive social space, with a curvy bench and artwork painted by students showing off their favourite books. It can be used as a place for quiet time, or for social functions such as hosting grandparents for morning tea. The Secret Native Garden is a place to learn about local ecosystems, with a yarning circle to encourage discussion and sharing ideas.. MLC School, Burwood

This Sydney private school has created a series of spaces for working, meeting and dining throughout its campus. The simple, sophisticated palette chosen by the designer for the furniture suite of seating, tables and bin enclosures complements the school’s traditional architecture and planting. Tables and benches provide places to catch up on homework in the grounds, while generous single seats placed around the campus provide plenty of opportunities to sit with friends, wait for class, or rearrange books in school bags. Round cafe tables in the lunchtime eating area are furnished with loose seats to create flexible places to sit in groups, moving from the sun to shade underneath umbrellas. The school’s crest is proudly displayed on custom signs for bins throughout the grounds. Street Furniture Australia’s distinctive sailed Monsoon litter bin roofs help keep out rain and pests, for added cleanliness.

Sustainable Schools Go ‘Bottle-Free’

Schools such as Chatswood PS, Bradfordville PS and Kegworth PS have installed drinking fountains and matching bottle refill poles as part of a commitment to reduce single-use plastics by providing easy access to drinking water and becoming ‘bottle-free.’ For younger student groups the drinking fountains can be tailored to a child-size height, as seen in the 2018 Mulga Bill-themed Eaglehawk Regional Play Space for the City of Greater Bendigo. Street Furniture Australia designs, manufactures and delivers all products from their factory in Western Sydney, drawing on more than 30 years of experience in furnishing the public domain. 116 Fencing

Queenslands trusted security fencing provider Brendan O’Donnell Fencing (BOF) is a family owned and operated fencing construction company operating from Bundaberg, Central Queensland. Established in 2003, as a mostly domestic fencing business it has grown to a predominately commercial business with over 100 major projects completed across Queensland in both the private and government sectors.

BOF has installed fencing for the Department of Education since 2009 and has been involved in the delivery of security fencing under the DETE101090 SOA associated with the School Security & Emergency Infrastructure Branch of the Department of Education since 2012. In recent times BOF has installed internal fencing for the Department of Child Safety, Youth and Women (formally Department of Justice and General Attorney) at the Brisbane Youth Detention Centre and Townsville Cleveland Youth Detention Centre. These projects have enabled BOF to establish specific workplace procedures to ensure each project can be delivered with minimal impact. One of BOF’s key differences is its associated branch business and resources including its own hydro vacuum excavation and mobile on-demand concrete trucks, skid steer loader, 3 tonne excavator and tip truck. This extensive tool arsenal allows BOF to limit the use of external sub-contractors providing better regulation over quality control, safety and general work procedures.

Australia’s trusted fence systems

Bluedog Fences Headingly ® Steel Picket Fencing 75x16mm Moon Picket

Since starting over 20 years ago as a small family owned business, Bluedog Fences Australia has grown to become a sought after, Australian owned, national fencing supplier with an industry leading reputation for manufacturing quality, installation, service and systems.

With a large amount of imported fencing products being used by the market (because of the perceived cheap pricing), customers are now realising the actual Term of Life cost of this inferior product. In contrast to their poor outcomes in function, safety and less than five year lifespan, case studies prove Bluedog fencing products in the field are surpassing 10 years and still going strong.

The superior quality and long Term of Life nature of our products have resulted in Bluedog fences being preferred by government and corporate Australia to obtain the long-term value and benefits of a Bluedog fence. Why choose a Bluedog fence?

• Each fence type has been developed and improved over many years as an integrated fence system. • We only use the highest quality steel that complies with Australian Standards and has the highest Zinc Rating at 275 grams/square metre. • Our products are independently tested to exceed Australian Standards. • Our seven stage chemical steel pre-treatment and powder-coating processes/powders exceed Australian Standards. • Our manufacturing facility is located in Australia, which allows for quality control from raw steel, to finished product, to safe packaging and distribution to the customer. • Our range of SmartaBrackets® and Eternity® gate hinges for security and safety. • We only use Silicon Bronze Weld which maximises corrosion resistance. • Our processes allow us to offer a 10 Year Colour Fastness Warranty. • Our business is supporting Australian manufacturing and Australian jobs. All the points above guarantee a stronger fencing solution that will last longer, which over time results in significant functionality and cost savings for the end user. 118 Air conditioning

HVAC:

more than just heating and cooling With almost all buildings today containing some form of indoor climate control system, HVAC professionals are in high-demand. At the cutting edge of construction innovation and technology, a career in the HVAC industry offers multiple pathways and a chance to be part of an industry that is integral to modern standards of living.

Everyone knows the relief that a perfectly airconditioned building can bring on a stifling hot day. And on bitterly cold mornings, with the thermostat set at a comfortable 22 degrees, a well-conditioned building almost allows us to forget how bone chilling it was outside on our morning commute. It is these notions of comfort that are most commonly associated with HVAC systems; however, less well recognised is the broader impact that heating, ventilation and air conditioning services have on our living standards. In fact, with people estimated to spend approximately 90% of their time indoors, a growing body of research has demonstrated just how important indoor temperature and air quality is for our health, safety and productivity. For example, well ventilated buildings with a reliable supply of fresh air can minimise the presence of air-borne pollutants and bacteria, thereby reducing instances of allergies and the spread of illnesses. Fire and smoke management systems significantly improve building safety, while the performance of numerous specialised facilities—such as hospital, laboratories, data centres and industrial premises—are functionally dependent on sophisticated HVAC. These systems also have broad economic and societal benefits.

In the workplace, well-conditioned buildings can impact people’s sense of happiness, reduce worker absenteeism, improve staff retention and increase overall business productivity. Office buildings with modern HVAC systems are valued higher and command higher rents; while in schools, good indoor air quality has been found to improve the academic performance of students.

THE BURSAR : ISSUE 1 : 2019

Working in an industry that delivers such diverse benefits can be highly rewarding, while also offering opportunities to work on a diverse range of building types using systems and applications and are at the cutting edge of technology. What careers can students pursue?

The heating, ventilation and air conditioning of buildings is a significant industry, contributing approximately $7.8 billion to the Australian economy annually. It consists of over 6,400 businesses, employs over 18,900 people, and offers a diverse range of career pathways that can accommodate almost any interest, talent and work preference. The following specialist occupations are just some of those available to individuals looking for a rewarding career working in Australia’s built environment.

119 Mechanical engineering

Do you know someone good with numbers, who likes problem solving and enjoys working with teams of people to come up with innovative solutions? Mechanical Engineers are responsible for the functional design of air conditioning, heating and ventilation systems. These designs must meet client expectations, whilst ensuring compliance with a variety of building standards and regulatory requirements. Mechanical Engineers also play an important role in ensuring that buildings are energy efficient and protect the health and safety of all building occupants. Mechanical services plumbing

Do you know someone who would like working with their hands, being part of a team and enjoys seeing tangible progress at the end of each day?

What is HVAC and what does a HVAC professional do? Heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems provide indoor air environments that are safe, healthy and comfortable for humans to occupy. They also provide a range of functional services for specialised facilities such as hospitals, laboratories, data centres and industrial facilities. HVAC professionals are responsible for the design, fabrication, installation, repair, service and maintenance of these systems, and includes a range of specialist occupations that include mechanical engineering, drafting, mechanical services plumbing and refrigerated air conditioning.

Mechanical plumbers fabricate and install equipment and components used for heating, cooling and ventilation in industrial and commercial buildings. They typically work in project teams and on building sites, enjoy performing various problem solving and technical skills, and can progress into site and project manager roles. Mechanical drafting

Do you know someone who is creative, likes working on computers and collaborating with various other professions to achieve shared goals? Mechanical draftspersons use sophisticated modelling software and other digital technologies to design, document and model HVAC systems so they can be fabricated and installed onsite. In addition to working in the digital environment, a draftsperson can expect to work collaboratively with numerous other stakeholders, including engineers, suppliers, project managers and others. Refrigeration and Airconditioning

Do you know someone who is good with people, has attention to detail and enjoys the variety of working in different places every day? Technicians are responsible for the service, repair and maintenance of refrigeration and air conditioning systems. Working on diverse types of applications and sites that include commercial premises, factories, office buildings, hospitals, sporting facilities, data centres and others, they enjoy working and interacting with a wide range of people in diverse and interesting locations.

About the Air Conditioning and Mechanical Contractors’ Association

Established in 1961, the Air Conditioning & Mechanical Contractors’ Association (AMCA) is a nationwide industry body that represents businesses operating in the commercial heating, ventilation and air conditioning industry. Our aim is a safe, prosperous and environmentally sustainable HVAC industry that is recognised for its important contribution to the Australian community and economy.

The Demolition & Asbestos Industry Association (Qld) Inc. (DAIA) Back in 2006 a group of demolition contractors got together to consider forming an association for the demolition industry with the aim of having industry work together on safety and operational matters and to provide a voice when dealing with government departments as well as industry leaders and other associations.

In 2018 the Demolition Association amalgamated with the Asbestos Industry Association to form the Demolition & Asbestos Industry Association (Qld) Inc. (DAIA). Today, the demolition sector provides a wealth of experience, up to date techniques, and advice for all demolition projects. The asbestos sector provides highly experienced technicians who can identify asbestos and give advice on the safe handling and high quality contractors who will carry out the asbestos removal process. 21st century learning – an integrated design solution

More than just funky furniture, a contemporary learning space relies on many design techniques to create an integrated design solution.

The recent re-purposing of learning spaces at St Kieran’s Catholic Primary School at Manly Vale is a case in point. It is important to note that regardless of how hard the design team works, nothing will be achieved unless the teaching staff embrace and drive the change. At St Kieran’s that’s exactly what happened. The Library at St Kieran’s presented an opportunity for a large column free space to be re-purposed as a combined Year 5 and 6 open learning space. This was a significant step towards student-centred learning where team teaching in a more open collection of task-based spaces would occur. Despite some natural apprehension from some parents the Principal, Mr Michael Gallagher and his staff assured them that the new learning environment was based on empirical study and would provide the students with real opportunities to develop their ‘soft skills’. These include an ability to collaborate in small and large groups and in doing so develop their communication skills beyond those developed in a standard classroom. The room was divided into separate task-based zones to provide a wide range of activities and supported using technology. Importantly, there are spaces in which students can retreat if activities become overwhelming such as the tech hub where noise levels are lower. Students who are kinetic learners (i.e. struggle to sit still in a chair for periods of time), can use stand up tables to carry out their tasks or sit on lower lounges and ottomans. THE BURSAR : ISSUE 1 : 2019

To combat the feeling of complete openness a new purpose-built joinery unit was designed for the centre of the room. This unit serves as a space divider, resources storage unit, writing surface and pinboard space with the vertical panels installed as sliding panels. This provides the added advantage of lengthening the sightlines in the room when required by sliding the panels to the side. The walls are consistently covered in pinboard material, primarily for the acoustic benefits such material provides in a space accommodating up to 85 students. This was a critical element of the design to get right as acoustic disruption to learning is typically where open learning environments fail. Lighting in the room was improved through the installation of new LED’s and clear curtains were introduced to assist with separation of spaces and further acoustic treatment. Students have embraced their new learning environment, led by dedicated and passionate teaching staff who understand the opportunities contemporary education design can provide. And the apprehensive parents? They have singled out the Principal to acknowledge their apprehension and praise him and the team at St Kieran’s for a great result. Paynter Dixon is working with the school currently to assist with an upgrade of their Year 2 classrooms using similar design principles. Building the schools of the future Alchemy Construct is a successful, privately owned construction company specialising in commercial construction, fitout, refurbishments, interiors and engineering. Based in Melbourne, Alchemy was founded by Director, Jamie Nicolson in 2015 and has fast built a reputation in a very competitive Melbourne market.

“I worked for many years in project management client side. I shared the frustrations that many in our industry have when it comes to time pressures and ensuring builders and contractors are delivering the best service they can. At times I didn’t feel there was a company doing what I thought needed to be done. That was to excel in customer service, be willing to go the extra mile, and care so much about the end result, the stakeholder and user experience that it was at the centre of everything the project was built on. For that reason I decided to start the company I was looking for, and Alchemy was born.” With expertise in the education sector, over 250+ education projects completed and more in the pipeline, Alchemy Construct are quickly becoming leaders in their field in the education space. Working for a variety of the state’s top Universities including Monash, RMIT, La Trobe and Deakin University, as well long standing Melbourne schools; Camberwell Primary School, Abbotsford Primary School and Merri Creek Primary School, Director, Jamie Nicolson says it’s an honour to be working in such a vibrant industry. “We are seeing a huge focus on the environments that students learn in, long gone are the days of old-school lecture theatres and spaces. These creative areas now showcase some of the world’s top building, architecture and design practice, and we are honoured to be able to construct and bring to life the visions held.” THE BURSAR : ISSUE 1 : 2019

Camberwell Primary School

Working with some of Victoria’s top institutions on projects varying from student learning hubs, laboratories, lecture spaces, communal teaching and learning facilities as well as bespoke architectural structures including music auditoriums and sports facilities, Alchemy have strong expertise in the work involved in educational spaces. Director, Jamie Nicolson added, “We have strongly developed a reputation for going the extra mile, for being willing to work around the complexities of work in these types of spaces, in ensuring that all stakeholders are involved at every stage of the process and importantly in ensuring the build and craftsmanship of all the work we do is something which the client, architect and full design team can walk away and be proud of.” An energetic team environment and strong company culture has proved to be a strong part of the company’s success. With a principle objective to deliver every project on time and within the specified budget whilst abiding to the highest quality standards, Alchemy Construct is driven by an aspiration to exceed clients’ expectations. Their success is completely dependent upon their project outcomes, their client satisfaction and their team.

How to improve the longevity of your school’s paintwork?

To cut to the chase, lighter paint colours will always outperform the darker shades even in the same paint product, in the same environment and at the same levels of exposure to wear and tear. Generally, a darker colour will fade, or even change colour entirely, more quickly when exposed to the elements (e.g. the weather, human touch, cleaning etc.). A deeper hue will also soak in the sun’s rays and heat up which can have adverse effects on the underlying material. Aside from dubious durability, darker paints often require multiple applications to achieve the desired levels of opacity or need an undercoat, all adding dollars to the bottom line. If possible, choose lighter colours to increase paint life-span and only use deep hues to accent or where protected from the elements. Deter graffiti at school and clean it up quickly

It’s always better to deter students from placing graffiti in the first place, so try to: • Make graffiti hotspots less appealing to vandals Evaluate your school’s hotspots, and think about what steps can be taken to make applying graffiti more difficult. • Encourage pride in the school environment Students who are proud of their school are less likely to make it look bad. A sense of ownership of the space can help with instilling pride. • Start an urban art project at your school Urban art, like student-painted murals, can be a positive way to prevent graffiti in schools. The existence of graffiti tends to promote more graffiti, which is why it is essential to keep spaces well-maintained to inspire students to treat them respectfully. An area that appears neglected will often provoke further abuse. When it comes to school painting, it can seem that cutting corners to trim costs might lead to savings in the school budget. But clever business managers know that quality products and workmanship, as well as preventative maintenance, will ease school budget strains in the long term.

To ensure the longevity of your school’s paintwork, there are a few things to keep in mind before, during and after the paint job. Here are some ideas: Use quality paints on your school’s surfaces

Keep your school’s paintwork looking its best by removing graffiti as soon as possible. It might also be worth applying an anti-graffiti coating to hotspot areas which makes graffiti much easier to remove. Hire top-notch school painting professionals

A regular painting maintenance plan will keep your school buildings both looking good, as well as providing them with the first barrier of defence against wear and tear. Hiring the right people to do the job will ensure the longevity of your paintwork, reducing costs and mitigating against future damage.

Cheaper grades of paint (sometimes known as ‘contractor’s grade’) will often bleedthrough after a short period and won’t stand up to the normal wear and tear seen in a school. This usually leads to scratching, peeling and scuffing, all of which contribute to a dilapidated look. Spending a little more on higher quality paint will mean less maintenance in the long run.

Product knowledge and transparent communication are both signs of a good contractor. Look for a contractor who recommends high-quality paints and prioritises durability over speed. In addition, hire a professional who is educated on all of the different aspects of the painting project. This includes preparation of surfaces to remove, dirt, mould or old flaking paint.

A lower grade of paint may also require more coats, meaning more paint is being used to achieve the necessary coverage and opacity, costing the school budget more. Not only is excess paint needed, but more coats also mean the paint job will take longer as the painting contractor is going over the same surface multiple (unnecessary) times.

Your painting contractor should also be aware of the best and most appropriate paints to use for different areas, for example, the paint used on a classroom wall should be very different from that on a high-use handrail.

High-quality paints generally have a quicker drying time, meaning your painting contractor can finish the job in a shorter amount of time. A quick dry time will save the school money by cutting down on labour costs as well as making sure the school painting is completed within holiday breaks or on weekends. Limit deep colour issues

While deep, dark, bold or particularly vibrant colours may be the contemporary approach to colour choice right now, this decision can have dire effects on the long term performance of your paintwork. THE BURSAR : ISSUE 1 : 2019

Regular planned maintenance of your school’s paintwork is more cost-effective than fixing things on an adhoc basis. By undertaking preventative painting maintenance, you can minimise natural deterioration and eliminate costlier repair of the school’s buildings. Planning your maintenance will also mean your costs are spread out over an extended period, not lumped together in one large sum. Water Management 143

Inspiring a sustainable water future For over five decades, the Australian Water Association has supported the water industry in Australia as it faces the challenges of managing our water environment.

When the AWA was founded in 1962, post-war installation of water and sanitation was high on the agenda. Challenges faced today include the need to address population growth, climate change, stressed water resources, and water reuse and recycling. The AWA is Australia’s biggest water network promoting sustainable water management and connecting its members through three core principles: information, networking and recognition. • Information

The AWA offers a comprehensive range of regular publications, and provides a forum for the exchange of ideas and knowledge among people involved in the management of water. Water Source is the Association’s online information hub for the water sector. It features articles, technical papers, podcasts, videos and resources on technology, the community, the environment, and business. • Networking

Young Water Professionals

The AWA’s Young Water Professional Program exists to attract, engage and empower Australia’s young water professionals and emerging leaders as they develop into early career water professionals. Through AWA’s events and networking opportunities, young water professionals (YWPs) can become connected, informed and inspired by other water industry professionals. The Program coordinates and delivers activities of local and national significance such as The YWP National Conference and the Ozwater YWP Program, events which provide a platform for Young Water Professionals to discuss emerging challenges. Working internationally

The purpose of the AWA’s International Program is to ensure that the expertise and experience of its members and the wider Australian water sector are profiled and positioned to play a key role internationally. One of AWA’s international activities includes the Water Utility Improvement Program which has been running for two years between Australian and Vietnamese water utilities and is now commencing in Indonesia.

The AWA offers a dynamic range of events to provide its members with opportunities to expand their personal and business networks, and connect with thousands of experts, potential clients, and businesses.

Vietwater is a big event for the international team where they organise delegations of up to 100 Australian water professionals to connect with Vietnamese water professionals and share their experiences.

• Recognition

The international team facilitates technology demonstrations in other countries where AWA members can use their innovations and expertise to provide clean water to remote communities. The team also hosts inbound delegations from across the Asia-Pacific region.

The AWA offers dedicated opportunities for individuals, organisations and companies to be recognised for their contribution to the water industry. Through their different programs, AWA promotes the achievements of its members and allows them to build their personal and corporate profiles. The AWA membership is broadly-based and multidisciplinary, covering the entire water cycle and associated industries including professionals and practitioners working in utilities, science, research and academia, energy and resources, manufacturing and agriculture.

H2Oz careers in water

The aim of AWA’s H2Oz jobs website is to share opportunities for professionals looking to work in the industry. Water professionals provide essential services to our communities, they contribute to the sustainable future of Australia, and work to protect our environment.

They look after all aspects of the water cycle from water supply to water and wastewater treatment, water resource planning to policy, law and research. If you are a job seeker or just looking for further information about the Australian water industry, the H2Oz jobs website provides access to career opportunities in many different fields all over Australia. Channeling Change

The AWA values the diverse composition of its membership. They are practiced around respect, inclusion, and equality, and celebrate difference in everything they do. Through the Channeling change Program, AWA and its members are building a water sector recognised for its diversity, inclusion, and equality. The program includes the promotion of success stories, videos capturing individual stories, workshops on engagement, promoting panel parity at events, and capacity building projects in the Asia Pacific regions to link innovation in the water sector with diversity, inclusion, and equality. National Water Week

Every third week of October, National Water Week makes a splash across Australia, inspiring individuals, communities and organisations to work together to build awareness around the value of water. Access to clean water is hugely important to every aspect of our lives, and we must do our best to protect our water environments and resources, and use water wisely. The theme for National Water Week 2019 has been confirmed as “It’s time to change the world”. This has been adapted from the World’s Largest Lesson on the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, a campaign to introduce the 17 sustainable development goals to young people all over the world and unite them to take action to meet these goals by 2030. To find out more about the AWA’s activities, programs and members, visit their website at www.awa.asn.au.
