Maintenance and Sterilisation of Lite-Touch Dental Hand Instruments Lite-touch dental hand instruments are designed to be used exclusively by dental personnel. To assure optimum performance and maximum product life, the instruments must be maintained correctly and used for the clinical purposes for which they are designed. Particular attention must be paid to their cleaning and sterilisation. Cleaning As Lite-Touch instruments are supplied in non-sterile packaging they must be rinsed and sterililsed before initial use. (See Autoclave Sterilisation below) 1. After use, all instruments must be rinsed in warm water to remove debris, including blood and materials, remaining on the instruments after the completion of treatment. A surgical cleaning brush with nylon bristles can be used to assist this process. 2. Instruments should be further cleaned by placing them in an instrument cassette for insertion into an ultrasonic bath. The instrument cassette should have grooves suitable for instruments with a round or octagonal handle so that when the cassette is closed, each instrument is held firmly in place, thus preventing scratching, pitting or blunting during the vibrations of the ultrasonic cycle. 3. Instruments with hinges such as forceps and scissors should be placed on mats and left open during the cycle. It is important these instruments do not touch. 4. Instruments manufactured from different metals must not be processed in the same cycle. 5. The instruments must be fully covered in the bath by the ultrasonic solution. 6. Instruments must be either air-dried or dried by lint-free cloth. 7. Water-soluble surgical lubricant must be applied to hinged-instruments before closure of the hinge. Autoclave Sterilisation After completing the above cleaning process, place the instruments in sterilisation packaging such as self-seal pouches, sterilisation-wrap or instrument cassettes and load into the autoclave. Instruments with hinges should be left open so that maximum steam penetration can be achieved. The sterilisation temperature of the autoclave must not exceed 175oC. The autoclave manufacturer’s instructions must be followed.
