Veteran journalist Albarado un-retires with Arkansas Advocate After an almost 50-year newspaper career, Sonny Albarado seems to have found his ideal niche.

Arkansas Democrat-Gazette in January 2020 after a varied and comprehensive career at newspapers in Louisiana, Tennessee and Arkansas.

And the irony is it came following two years of initial retirement.

He was enjoying retirement but eagerly accepted what he considers a difference-making position in Arkansas journalism.

Albarado is serving as editor-in-chief of the Arkansas Advocate, an exciting and dynamic new vehicle in the changing world of journalism. The Advocate is an online-only daily publication focusing on state government and public policy.

“The joys of retirement lost out to the potential for achieving great journalism when the opportunity arose to continue serving Arkansas and my profession as editor-in-chief of the Arkansas Advocate,” Albarado wrote at the time.

With an initial publication date of Aug. 16, 2022, the Advocate is part of a nationwide network, States Newsroom, which began with six outlets in 2018 and has grown to 36 across the country. All the outlets are funded by donations that support non-profit, high-quality journalism without advertising, subscription fees or paywalls.

“Here was a chance to play a part in developing a news outlet that has a passion for seeking truth,” he continued. “A chance to give citizens the information and tools to make informed decisions for themselves. The opportunity to create a news outlet that takes seriously its role as a responsible, ethical interlocutor of the events and issues that concern Arkansans, especially those from marginalized or overlooked communities.”

Albarado is one of a staff of four professional journalists covering stories and policy developments that affect the lives of Arkansans. He and reporters Hunter Field and Tess Vrbin work out of Little Rock, while Antoinette Grajeda is the staffer in Northwest Arkansas.

“My wife says she has never seen me happier,” he said. Albarado is quick to point out that financial donors understand no influence on news coverage is implied or allowed. “We are editorially independent,” he said. “We decide what to cover and how to cover it.”

“This is a different way of looking at news in terms of the business model,” Albarado said, noting The Advocate and other similar projects nationwide allow journalists “to do the kind of public service reporting that got us into the business in the first place.” Albarado
