SLOW AND STEADY Without the freedom that digital photographer offers to take countless shots, frame after frame, film photographers are forced to be deliberate. “Film is extremely expensive”, Solomon says. “Every time I click the shutter button, it costs me two dollars. Two dollars per click! [When I first started shooting film,] this started heavily eating into my overhead and I learned that I needed to be much more thoughtful about every single photo I made. Now instead of having thousands of mediocre photos, I have a stronger, focused, carefully curated collection of amazing photos to deliver to my couples.” “You only have 36 frames on a roll of 35mm film or 16 on a roll of 120/645 film”, explains Minson. “Thus, you take your time making sure the image you are capturing is going to be damn near perfect.” Film is the ultimate teacher, says Kim. “It keeps me accountable for what I am doing. If I have a shot lined up, and there is something I don’t like about it, I will either fix the photo before I take it, or I will move to a different position,” he says. “It forces me to make sure that each photo is 100 percent something usable, rather than an assembly of mediocre photos.”

While this seems like a major pro for film, some couples worry that all that precision means they won’t receive as many photos as digital. But the concern is misconceived, our photographers say.
