A BOYD’S EYE VIEW OF VIDEO POKER

Hey

look

ideo poker has been around since the mid 70’s when IGT founder Si Redd placed a few on the casino floor as a novelty game for players heading to the tables. He was as surby prised as anyone when he spotted players queuing Linda Boyd up to try their luck. Nobody could have predicted the 40-year love affair casino players have had with VP. The fact that less than a dozen core games have maintained their popularity while new games come and go is due to the complexity of correct card holds for computer-perfect play. Few can play 100% accurately even if they wisely practice at home on the software, but it’s a heck of a lot better than random holds on an unfamiliar new game. What has changed is the knowledge of the game manufacturers, with IGT remaining the leader of the pack. In fact, the device-makers send the games’ expected return to casino staff and both incorrectly assume the theoretical return is correct, forgetting that it requires computer-perfect play. That’s the reason we see so much downgrading, or lowering the payback for certain hands. For example, 9/6 Jacks or Better (9/6JOB) games used to be easy to find and now you’ll see mostly 8/5JOB or worse. In other words, your full house and flush returns (5-coin wager) are diminished by 5 for each of these two hands when you play 8/5JOB over 9/6JOB. In terms of expected return (ER) you get 97.2984% (8/5JOB) instead of 99.5439% (9/6JOB). If you can’t find an acceptable JOB game, then take a look at Bonus Poker options; you may get lucky and find 8/5BP when all the 9/6JOB games have been downgraded. You can use the same game strategy for BP as for JOB and players find it more exciting because they are paid more for special four-of-akinds. Make sure you’ve found the right game because I’ve noticed pseudo-BP, where you only get even money for two pair instead of double your bet for the same hand, creeping into casinos. Here’s the pay schedule. Notice that 8/5 BP (ER 99.17%) isn’t as good as 9/6JOB (ER 99.54%); however, both 8/5 BP and even 7/5BP (ER 98.01%) are better than 8/5 JOB. Sometimes you get lucky and find either 8/5BP or 7/5BP progressives on the royal flush, making it an even better choice. Absolutely given two identical

Hand/ 5-Coin Bet 8/5BP 7/5 BP games, one progressive and the other not, choose the progressive. This may Royal Flush (RF) 4000 4000 seem like a no-brainer but I have Straight Flush (SF) 250 250 4 Aces 400 400 heard people say they choose the nonFour 2’s, 3’s or 4’s 200 200 progressive once the RF gets to $1200, 4 Fives-Kings 125 125 a big mistake. That’s because you can Full House 40 35 write off your losses in Arizona and on Flush 25 25 the federal form. Let’s face it, anytime Straight 20 20 the ER is under 100% the house has the 3 of a Kind (3OAK) 15 15 advantage and nobody outruns the num2 Pair 10 10 bers over time. Go for the largest jackpot Jacks or Better 5 5 both in VP and on progressive slots. the tried and true classics but they have many new twists. Now you will find multi-play, from three to l00 hands per game, super times play (multipliers), spin poker and many more options than the single games offered in 1975. Perhaps they’re more fun, but they are also more expensive per hand. If, for example, you’re playing three hands on a quarter machine it costs $3.75 per game instead of $1.25 each single-hand dealt. That’s a good reason to make sure you select a game with a reasonable ER. You may think that with the increase in the per hand cost the pay schedules would be better than before and if you go up a denomination that may be true. However, overall the ER for the classic games is going downward so carefully select the best game available and be flexible. Many players are so used to their old standbys like JOB, DB (Double Bonus) and DDB (Double Double Bonus) that they forget all about BP. Take a minute to look it over as it may be a better choice when your favorites have been downgraded. Linda Boyd, a long-time table game player before turning to video poker, also writes for “Southern & Midwest Gaming”and the latest edition of “American Casino Guide”. You can see her videos on YouTube or view them on American Casino Guide’s web site and her radio interviews are on iTunes. Boyd’s book, “The Video Poker Edge”, includes free removable pay schedules and strategy cards for the most popular games. July 4th Blackjack Tournament

one Butte Casinos Holiday Blackjack Tournaments are such a success they will be having another one on Monday July 4th. The Casino guarantees 1st place money at $5,000. Sign up is at by TJ by 10am and the first round begins at noon. Their MemoJorgensen TJ Jorgensen rial Day Tournament was a sell out so it’s a good idea to sign up early. Keep in mind, if you want to play in blackjack tournaments, there are plenty of local Phoenix area Blackjack Tournaments every week. Here is a list of ones you might consider, if you have time: Casino Arizona 101 & Mckellips in Scottsdale, every Tuesday at noon ($50 buy-in) and also the late night (Thursday night) Friday morning tournament ($25 buy in) at 1am Vee Quiva Hotel & Casino on the west side in Laveen holds their tournament every Friday at 4pm ($40 buy in).

You might also consider a break from the scorching valley heat; head up the hill to the cool pines of Payson and Mazatzal Hotel & Casino for their Monday 6pm tournament – their buy in is $40. One of the fun aspects of tournaments is that you sometimes have to think outside the box and deviate from basic strategy to come up with the best way to play a tournament hand. See if you can figure out the best play in this scenario. You are now at hand #16 of 21 hands in the semi-final round. There are 3 players left. The top two players advance, betting limits are $100 minimum, $5000 maximum. Player A has $2,000 goes all in and is dealt a hard 10, 4 (14) and stands on 14 (You) with $3900 bet $400 and are Dealt 5, 5 (10) Player C with $4200 bet $150 and is dealt 10,8 (18) Dealer has a 10 up - What is your best play? Most players would play basic strategy and just hit the 10. A few players would double and take a shot at player C to get the lead if all players win their hands. Neither play is the best move, however - here is the reason why. This match could be over on this hand. Player A stood with 14, if the dealer makes a hand Player A is eliminated and Player C and You would Advance. The best move is to split your 5s, and re-split as often as possible. Double on any non-busting total, stand on any busting total. If you’re lucky, you could get 8 bets working for $3200. If the dealer makes a hand you lose all your bets but it doesn’t matter because the round is over since player A stood on 14 and is eliminated. If the Dealer busts, you have extended your lead over Player A and C with no risk at all. The extra chips would become quite valuable in the final hands of the round. Situations like this come up in tournaments and if you think outside the norm of basic strategy you can give yourself a nice edge. I hope to see everyone at the tournament tables. T.J. Jorgensen has been a professional Blackjack player for over 20 years. He is well known for his live tournament play. gaming news MEXICAN POP LEGEND RETURNS TO TUCSON! Fresh from the release of her latest album, Mexican pop icon Gloria Trevi is returning to the Diamond Center on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2016 as part of her “El Amor” World Tour. Tickets are on sale now through Star Tickets and at the casino Rewards Center. Born in Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico, Gloria Trevi was determined to be a star from a very young age. She got her start with the girl group “Boquitas Pintadas” in 1985 and began her solo career three years later. Her rebellious spirit, ironic social criticism, and unique commercial savviness quickly blossomed into an international sensation, reaching millions of fans in Mexico, the U.S. and across Latin America. Her unconditional surrender to the music and her fans made her the most outstanding pop music icon of the 90s and one of the most talented, respected, and admired singer-songwriters of Latin pop. She has sold more than 30 million records, and her latest album, Inmortal, goes on sale today. Inmortal is a live album that means a great deal to Gloria Trevi, who made history in the Arena Monterrey, filling it to capacity with fans who sang along with the rhythm of her classic songs, more recent material, and some delightful surprises.

DAVID AT THE SNACK BAR

David’s Video Details

X-Men: Apocalypse

10 Cloverfield Lane

The first Mutant has been buried under a temple for thousands of years, when he released he is un-killable and his powers are extinction level. Meanwhile, Raven is travelling the world freeing and uniting mutants. She brings one of them, by Nightcrawler, to Professor David Ramsey Xavier’s school where she brings them information on the new threat. Apocalypse rounds up his four horsemen, including Magneto and tries to destroy the world. Naturally, the X-Men unite to stop him. There are back stories of many of the X-Men that will make a lot of the other movies make more sense. The story is too formulaic, “X-Men: Apocalypse” is just another super-hero movie.

After a car accident Michelle wakes up in a locked bare room chained to the wall. Howard tells her that he rescued her after the accident and by bringing her to this shelter he has saved her life. He tells her that we have been attacked and the air outside is deadly. Howard claims he is a prepper who saw it coming and was prepared. The other person in the shelter, Emmett, tells her he saw the attack happening and believes the story. Michelle is not so sure. While not a direct sequel to 2008’s “Cloverfield” it does take place in the same Universe. “10 Cloverfield Lane” is at times an intense edge-of-your-seat thriller while at others it’s a mystery all with a sci-fi twist. The script is perfect and the cast is ideal.

Eddie the Eagle

Alice Through the Looking Glass Alice returns from a trip around the world to find her life turned upside down. When she sees Absolem she follows him through a mirror back to Wonderland. Once there she finds that things have changed, it seems the Hatter has lost his muchness. Mirana, the March Hare and everyone ask Alice to talk to him, telling her that she is the only one he will listen to. She gives it a try but it only gets worse. With help she steals a machine from Time and goes to the past to set things right. There is not as much action nor as much absurdness as “Alice in Wonderland” but it is a better film. The effects are spectacular and the story is compelling. 28 ARIZONA PLAYER June 2016

All his life Eddie wanted to be an Olympian. As a child he practiced various sports repeated but unfortunately, he was not very athletic. He persisted and finally found a sport that he could qualify for the Winter Olympics. He discovers that there was no one on the British Ski Jumping team so he finds a trainer and sets out to be the only one. While the officials do not want him and keep changing the requirements with lots of training and hard work he makes the ‘88 Olympics and becomes a national hero. “Eddie the Eagle” is inspiring and hilarious.

London Has Fallen

When the British Prime Minister dies suddenly the leaders of the western world converge on London to attend the funeral, including the President of the United States. Security is high but not high enough when a coordinated attack by assailants who have infiltrated the police brings London to its knees. While the other leaders are killed President Asher is saved by Mike Banning, the head of his secret service detail, and they go on the run to safety. This sequel to “Olympus Has Fallen” is better than the original. The story is just as unbelievable but the action is non-stop. David Ramsey is the President and co-founder of the Phoenix Film Critics Society and a member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association (The Critics Choice Awards). Watch his reviews on the CBS 5 Morning News every Friday between 5:30 and 6:30am and on ABC-15’s “Sonoran Living Live” every other Friday. Read more of his DVD reviews at WildAboutMovies.com. jokes of the month A CLOSE SHAVE

Tony has been running a barber shop in the downtown area for decades and has dozens of regulars that stop by every few weeks. Last week he saw a new face open the front door to his shop, look around at the folks sitting in chairs and asked “Hey Tony…how long?” Tony scanned the room, then said “About one hour, maybe 90 minutes at most” The guy shook his head up and down and said “OK” then closed the door and walked away. A few days later the very same guy pops open the door and asks, “Hey Tony, How long’s the wait?” Tony surveys the shop, counts on his fingers and yells back “Maybe 45 minutes or so” The guy replied “Sounds good” then closes the door and heads down the street. When the same goof ball came by again a few days later Tony was more than a bit annoyed. The fellow opened the door and called out “Hey Tony, my good man, How long before you can get me in? Looking a bit miffed, Tony calmly said “Maybe 30 minutes….will that

work for you?” The guy smiled and said “That should be perfect” Tony looked over at the Shoe repair guy Geno who rented space in his shop and yelled to him “Hey Geno, do me a favor, follow that joker, and find out where he goes, he’s really pissin’ me off – does that idiot ever plan on comin’ in for a haircut? Geno takes off, and returns in about 15 minutes, then goes directly to his shoe repair desk. Tony yells “Geno, did you follow that guy?” “Yea I did” said Geno – “Well…did you find out where he goes?” questioned Tony “Yea I did” Geno calmly answered Tony was now getting upset “Geno, then tell me where the hell does this moron go?” Geno took a deep breath, hesitated and replied……“Tony, he goes to your house!”
