Memorial Day Blackjack Tournament

f you’re looking for something to do on Monday, May 30th, Here’s a great idea, especially if you like to participate in tournaments. Tournaments are where you get “Max for your Money.” A small entry fee can turn into a BIG payoff! Now the details; Lone Bute Casino is hosting a special Memorial Day Blackjack Tournament. Registration starts at 10am and the Tournament begins at noon. The casino is paying 6th Places (everyone at the final table) and 1st place money is guaranteed to be $5,000, that’s really great for a $50 entry fee. Recently Lone Butte held a President’s Day Blackjack Tournament and it was a sell-out. The Tournament was very well organized, and everyone had a lot of fun. Last month my column was entitled “How to win a Blackjack Tournament” and this month I will give you a little more ammunition if you decide to come out and play. A Tournament can be broken down into four parts; The Early part of the round, Middle of the round, Late round, and the Final Hand. In the Early part of the round you should be betting close to the minimum bet. I use this part of the round to size up the other players. The ones that play perfect basic strategy will probably be the contenders in the late round. In the middle part of the round you should figure out where you stand, if you are behind you will probably need to make a catch up bet. When to do that is up to you, but I try to do it in a single bet as opposed to several small bets – Odds of winning a single bet is about 44%. Here is a way you can give yourself a 60% chance of successfully making a catch up bet. by TJ Jorgensen

Let’s say the player with the lead has $800 to your $650. If you bet half your chips and lose you would have to win the next bet to get back to $650, not an effective move. If you bet all your chips you only have a 44% chance of winning the bet. However a better way is to bet $175. If you win you have the lead, but if you lose, go all in with your remaining $475. If you win either bet you have the top bankroll. Chances of winning one of the two hands is 60%, as you can see, much better than 44%. Late in the round you need to put on your game face. You want to be the chip leader going into the final hand, or bust out trying to get there. You may need to double or split more to get the lead but it is worth it. The Player with the highest bankroll going into the final hand has a much better chance of winning the round. The final hand is where tournaments can be won or lost depending on the skills of the player. Entire books have been written on last hand strategy. A powerful and effective play for the last hand if you have the top chip count is to make a max bet – whatever is allowed in the tournament. I hope everyone comes out on Memorial Day – You’ll have lots of fun and maybe even take home some well-earned cash. Keep this in mind when you’re playing blackjack, it’s a quote from Eddie Felson in the movie The Color of Money, Eddie said “Money won is twice as sweet as money earned” Good Luck! T.J. Jorgensen has been a professional Blackjack player for over 20 years. He is well known for his live tournament play and has competed against, and beaten, some of the top tournament players in the world. He also has won the prestigious World Series of Blackjack. A BOYD’S EYE VIEW OF VIDEO POKER

VP Literalists –

en, my nephew’s son, crawled out to the second floor balcony one time too many when he was a toddler. His dad, alarmed by the danger, said “I told you no! Do you want a by spanking?” He then spanked Ken so that he would Linda Boyd remember. Tearfully, Ken cried, “I said no thank you daddy!” Ken was born a literalist, so the fact that he politely answered the question and was still spanked bothered him more than the punishment. What does this have to do with video poker (VP)? There are times when emblazoned signs within a casino are accurate and others when it’s just hype. Your job is to know the difference. Here are some tips to help you. Superlatives: I’m sure you’ve notice many casinos have neon signs saying “Voted the best in Vegas” and wonder how this could be possible. Sometimes a publication just names a casino “the best” for ad dollars and other times it’s based on unknown criteria. The use of superlatives in advertising is definitely not the least bit objective, so try playing there and see if it meets your definition. New Point System: There was a standing joke among educators selecting their pension plans, if they’re offering you a “new and fabulous” option, just say no! True, not everybody got the message, but that’s why there are fish on the dinner table. The same is true for changing the way slot club points are awarded or any deviation from the old system. Always verify the percentage paid for slot club points (an easy to use formula is in my book, “The Video Poker Edge” available at amazon.com or bookstores) before accepting that it will be better. If the casino is changing from cash to free play you probably won’t consider it better nor is it a good thing when they purge either your points or food comps due to a wonderful new system. Mailers: These offers come in the mail from casinos and are usually the gospel. But read the fine print, get out your readers, you’ll see “while supply lasts” but the larger font might state – “From 8AM to 7PM, We have a gift for you!” Most casinos order enough, but I’ve been snookered when I arrived by 3PM and way before the 7PM deadline, and they were out of gifts. Like Ken’s hurt feelings over the spanking, I felt stupid for driving a long way for no gift, but instead receive a $10 slot voucher for the inconvenience. I didn’t care

6 ARIZONA PLAYER May 2016

about the “cookware” since even the sound of those words makes me shiver (I mostly eat out) but I dislike feeling like a chump. Payback Percentages: If you see expected returns (ER) on signage above the bank of machines, you can be sure it’s literally true. For example, there’s such a sign above some machines in Laughlin that says “Payback over 100% with accurate play” and that’s absolutely correct. I heard a lady say “you know that’s a lie or they couldn’t stay in business”. Wrong. They can do it because few people make accurate holds (if players practiced on tutorial software they would get close to perfect) and most machines have lower ERs. They draw a lot of business by being able to advertise that they have VP machines with the highest return percentages on the river (Laughlin). So if the sign reads; “over 100% payback with correct play” Find a seat, sit down and play, since it is true! Random Number Generator (RNG): I don’t care who tells you the machines are “set” to not pay much for any reason they provide, it’s simply untrue. The only way to downgrade a machine to make it “tight” or “loose” is through the pay schedule. If the pay table is altered, say 8/5 JOB becomes 7/5 JOB, then your ER is reduced. As long as the 8/5JOB you played on the last visit remains 8/5 JOB there is no tightening for Arizona players. That’s because they are required to have an RNG on the logic board. In some jurisdictions there are VLT’s (video lottery terminals) without a RNG and then you have no way of determining the game’s ER. Just one of many reasons why it’s good to be an Arizona player! Final Thoughts: It’s a smart thing to be a Video Poker literalist when it comes to accurate card holds, mailers (get there early for gift offers), and payback percentages on your slot club card. On the other hand, if you believe every casino is “the best in town” Then be careful if you’re offered something (used car, house, big screen TV) that seems “too good to be true”…. because….well, you know the rest! Arizona gained a millionaire over this past Mother’s Day weekend. An Avondale resident has come forward to claim the $8.4 million The Pick jackpot that was won on the Saturday, May 7th drawing. The huge jackpot winner, who chose to remain anonymous, opted to take the cash option of $5.5 million. The winning ticket was purchased at the Fry’s Marketplace located at 8325 W. Indian School Road in Phoenix. There is no question that some lottery players will make the trek over to this “lucky” customer service booth at Fry’s to get their tickets for the next few drawings drawing. The amazing $8.4 million jackpot rolled over twice each week for nearly seven months and was The Pick’s highest jackpot the Lottery has seen in more than six years. In addition to the jackpot winner there were over 12,000 players also won cash prizes in The Pick drawing on that special Saturday night, ranging from $3 to as much $2,000 and 15 players did take home that $2,000 prize. The Pick has reloaded to an estimated $1 million is up for grabs in the next drawing. Although it’s not an 8 million super jackpot, but winning even $1,000,000 in any Arizona Lottery drawing would be life changing for most people. Since 1981, the Arizona Lottery and its retail partners have generated more than $3 billion in net funding in support of programs that help to improve the quality of life for the people of Arizona. Proceeds from Lottery ticket sales (more than $3.7 million per week) – fund Arts and Education; Community Enrichment; Economic Development; Environmental Conservation; Health and Human Services; and Public Safety programs. Their mission is to support Arizona programs for the public benefit by maximizing net revenue in a responsible manner. Learn more at ArizonaLottery.com.

travel SHOW LOW FOR A GREAT TIME Why is this mile high town called Show Low – And how did it get that name? Well, back in 1875 Marion Clark and Corydon Cooley squatted on about 100,000 acres of land in the North eastern Arizona Territory. The two pioneers had an objective to start a ranching and farming operation to supply Fort Apache, a nearby military post. Clark supervised the ranch, while Cooley worked with the military and became friends with the White Mountain Apache Indians, learned the Apache language and even married two of the chief’s daughters. The Army though so much of Cooley, they hired him as an interpreter. Cooley’s relationship with the Army, may have benefited the tribe to stay on their land. Clark and Cooley disagreed on who was doing more for their success. Clark told Cooley, either help more at the ranch or get out! They both agreed that the settlement wasn’t big enough for both of them anymore and since neither had the resources to buy the other one out, along with the fact that both men were both gamblers, they agreed to let a game of cards decide their fate with the loser to move out. As the story goes, they played all night with neither having an advantage, so they decided to shuffle the cards and draw a card. The tale is, Clark said, “if you can show low, you win.” Corydon Cooley drew the Deuce of Clubs, the lowest card in the deck – Clack agreed with the outcome, left town never to be heard from again. A short time later the government opened a post office in that region and Cooley became the first Postmaster. The Post Office was named SHOW LOW.

And as Show Low grew…so did the legend. The main street in Show Low is named the “Deuce of Clubs.” In keeping with that theme you will find streets like; Full House Lane, Blackjack Road, Club Straight Lane and Wild Aces Road. Right now is a great time to pack up the car, truck, van or RV and head north east to the tall cool pines of Show Low and leave behind the 100 + temperatures in the valley. Enjoy some fun cool adventures at about 6,000 to 7,000 feet where the air is crisp and clear. And the timing could not be better because the first weekend of June is “Show Low Days” with something for everyone, there is a Cruz’n the Rim car show, a soap box derby race down the Deuce of Clubs and plenty of other activities like hiking, biking, fishing, camping and lots more for the whole family. You’ll find hotels, cabins and campsites. You might even like to try out the newest Zip Line tour over the tall pines that is over a mile long, it’s close by at Sunrise Park Resort. And should you want to follow the footsteps of the founders of Show Low and play a little poker, Hon-Dah Resort Casino is just minutes away with fun games and entertainment. So why not Show Low…for a great high. The rare air will do you good.

HORSIN’ AROUND

The Second Jewel

efore we get into the second jewel of the 2016 Triple Crown, the Preakness Stakes, let’s look back to what really happened on Kentucky Derby Day. by Experience means something in sports and Brian Mulligan the connections of Nyquist banked on their experience and won another Kentucky Derby. Four years ago I’ll Have Another, owned, ridden and trained by the Nyquist crew, won the Kentucky Derby and although these horses are different with different personalities, to be able to go back and lean on what has happened in the past can be huge. Trainer Doug O’Neill and rider Super Mario Gutierrez were very well prepared. Some horses had good trips Saturday, some did not; Nyquist stalked the sizzling :22.58, :45.72, 1:10.40 pace set by Danzing Candy, took over the lead from Gun Runner heading into the lane, opened a large margin at mid-stretch and had plenty left to hold off the late run of Exaggerator to win by 1 1/4 lengths before the second-largest crowd in Derby history. Exaggerator ran huge considering the way the race figured to set up as he had to come from 15th and was over 3 clears clear of the show horse, Gun Runner, who got a solid 3-hole trip. This was the third straight win for a California-based horse and runners from California have now won 4 of the last 5 Derbies! The logical major players of this year’s Preakness are clearly in front of us starting with Nyquist but if one digs deep enough, other contenders can come of out of the woodwork. Obvious Choice First let’s give the Derby winner his props. Nyquist is the eighth unbeaten Derby winner in history. The last unbeaten to win his first 8 races was Majestic Prince back in 1969.

And he did something that Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew did in 1977 and that is – Win the Derby after being an unbeaten champ at 2.

Possible Player

Gun Runner could be one of those players that steps up in the Preakness. He got a good draw in the Kentucky Derby with slow horses, those with limited speed, inside and outside of him. He ran well to be third and he could enjoy the shorter trip of the Preakness. Consistency has been Gun Runner’s calling card as the only time he was out of the money was in the live sloppy 2015 finale. Solid in the Bayou to kick off the year, this colt was the top point earner for the Derby.

Logical Contender

Now, the logical main foe for Nyquist is Exaggerator. In the Derby, Exaggerator was forced to stop at one point but he had clear running the entire stretch and did seem to level off in the final sixteenth. He was 17 back at one point in the Derby but he can be closer up if in the mood. Note, he was just a length off the sprint pace in the San Vicente and he was close up in his Saratoga Special victory last year too. A final note his Beyer in the Santa Anita Derby was the highest figured earned in any two-turn Derby prep.

Maybe a Long shot?

New shooters and new faces have had a very tough time in the Preakness. Since, before Secretariat won the Triple Crown, to be exact in 1970, only 7 Preakness winners didn’t run in the Derby. Those are not good odds – With that said, think about a new shooter named Stradivari. He was hung wide in his educational debut, and he made it look easy in the maiden breaker and was equally as impressive beating winners. In his work on May13, this runner was clocked in,:59.51 as he started out about 2 lengths behind Stanford, the winner of the Charles Town Classic, finished together strongly, with this runner appearing the stronger of the pair. He is talented but untested and this racer is bred to run all day on top and his dam was a proven router and Grade 2 winner that banked nearly $900K. He must be respected since he won his last 2 races by over 25 lengths combined. So, there you have it. Nyquist is the selection in the Preakness and one could do worse than taking a shot with a value runner named Stradivari.

Brian Mulligan was the main West Coast linemaker for two decades for the Daily Racing Form writing under the non de plume of “SWEEP.” He continues to contribute to the Daily Racing Form. 26 ARIZONA PLAYER May 2016

DAVID AT THE SNACK BAR Captain America: Civil War After a successful mission to stop an arms dealer has deadly collateral damage the governments of the world call for the Avengers to be placed under U. N. supervision. The super team splits on the idea with Tony ‹Iron Man› Stark leading those by in agreement and Captain America leading David Ramsey the opposition. In the middle of this debate it appears the Winter Soldier has returned causing more mayhem. The pursuit of Caps old friend causes a further divide among the most powerful people on the planet. While there is plenty of action, with some surprises including a much anticipated debut, it is the dramatic scenes that are the most powerful and make this a unique super-hero film that actually has a plot that does not include a super villain. A pivotal film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe «Captain America: Civil War» is one of the best super heroes movies.

The Nice Guys Jackson Healy is the guy you hire when you need something done with a little muscle. Amelia thinks she is being stalked and hires him to stop the men doing it. Jackson tracks down Holland March and asks him to stop, with more than a little persuasion. The only problem is Jackson is a private investigator who has been hired to find Amelia. When things get complicated they team up to find her and stop whoever is behind the attempts on her life. The cast is exceptional with newcomer Angourie Rice, as March›s 13-year-old daughter, stealing the show. «The Nice Guys» delivers action, humor, intrigue and a perfect 1970s look and feel - making for an enjoyable couple of hours. 28 ARIZONA PLAYER May 2016

Deadpool

Former Special Forces op turned mercenary, Wade Wilson, is diagnosed with terminal cancer and agrees to under a rogue treatment to beat it. He is cured but turned into a disfigured mutant with incredible healing powers. He designs a special suit and adopts the name ‹Deadpool› but he is still the wisecracking, foul-mouthed ‹merc with a mouth›. This is the first R-Rated Marvel film and it earns that rating. It is true to the comic, very funny from the opening credits to the very end and part of the ‹X-Men› universe. Ryan Reynolds has been trying to get this movie made for years. I am glad he finally got it done. Everything about «Deadpool» is perfect.

Zootopia Set in a world where animals act as humans and predators and prey have learned to live together. Judy Hopps has always wanted to be a policeman but it has always been a job for big strong predators. Judy perseveres and becomes the first rabbit on the force. The chief assigns her to parking detail where she convinces a conman fox, her natural enemy, to help her solve a big case. She has 48 hours to solve the disappearances of a number of well respected citizens who happen to be predators. «Zootopia» is one of those rare animated films that has something for adults and children. It is funny, has a great message and a nice touch of suspense.

Zoolander

A disaster sends Derek and Hansel into hiding where they attempt to live down their previous stardom. They are both invited to return to the run away as models for the hottest new designer in the business only to suffer new humiliation. As they attempt to recover they are approached by an Interpol agent who asks for their help bringing down Mugatu, who has returned with an more evil plan to dominate the fashion industry. The first film was fun and wacky this one is just a retread with none of the humor and way too many celebrity cameos. jokes of the month Resolutions & Observations

My goal for 2016 was to lose 10 pounds, as of today…I just have 15 pounds to go.

Remember back when we were kids and every time it was below zero out they closed schools? Me neither.

I’m trying to lose weight, so had salad for dinner! It was mostly croutons & tomatoes. Actually just one big, round crouton covered with tomato sauce and cheese – FINE…it was pizza. I ate pizza.

OK, I’m not that funny, or athletic, or good looking, or smart or talented, but….I forgot where I was going with this.

I recently did a week’s worth of cardio after walking into a spider web on my patio. I don’t mean to brag but...... I finished my 14-day diet in 3 hours and 20 minutes.

A thief broke into my house last night. He started searching for money, so I woke up and searched with him. Finally, for the health conscious folks out there, here’s a guide to prepare Tofu for your next meal; 1. Throw it in the trash. 2. Grill some Meat.

Women, who carry an extra 20 pounds of weight, live longer than men who constantly mention it.
