Luci’s Healthy Marketplace

A health-food shop, coffee bar and café Picture a place that allows you to shop local, get organic and natural products all while enjoying freshly cooked meals, and you get an idea of the vision behind Luci’s Healthy Marketplace.

“We’re all about providing a place for people to come and be reminded of wellness,” Lucia Schnitzer, founder of Luci’s Healthy Marketplace says. “Not just eating healthy but taking care of yourself and surrounding yourself with people who reflect wellness.”

The idea for the marketplace started when Schnitzer was diagnosed with breast cancer and began to eat healthy, nontoxic and chemical-free food to help in her recovery.

“I noticed that it was very hard to find items that fit that criteria in conventional grocery stores, so with the help of my husband Ken, we sought out to create a place that would fill that gap,” Schnitzer says.

In 2009, the Schnitzers opened Luci's Healthy Marketplace, located on the corner of a historic strip mall in North Central Phoenix. However, before the couples business could even take off they ran into another obstacle shortly after opening.

“Three months after opening, a fire burned down a neighboring restaurant,” Schnitzer says.

“Thankfully, the fire did not affect Luci’s, but water and smoke damage caused us to have to remodel and close for three months."

After three long months of remodeling, Luci’s Healthy

Marketplace was finally open for business again, and the Schnitzers could not have been more thrilled.

“We saw our vision vanish,” Schnitzer says. “As devastating as it was, we were able to use it as a way to re-evaluate our focus and create a better space for customers to enjoy."

Today, Luci’s Healthy Marketplace has established itself as a landmark neighborhood market, with a large and loyal customer base. Inside guests are greeted with quaint charm and cheerful decor that has both a 1950s and a contemporary feel. An abundance of storefront windows let plenty of sunshine into the space, for both diners and shoppers.

"And when the weather is nice, the roll-up garage doors make it really inviting,” Schnitzer says. “We feel we’ve created a neighborhood community living room.”

On one side is a grocery department featuring frozen foods, organic and gluten-free items, supplements, shampoos and other household products Also, in that area are craft beers, small-batch sodas, organic dairy, other cheeses and organic packaged meats, among other gourmet grocery items.

“We also made sure to make room for a fully loaded commercial kitchen that was capable of churning out made-to-order sandwiches, breakfast dishes, omelets, salad and soups,” Schnitzer says.

As the fastest land mammal on earth, Cheetahs are designed for speed being able to reach up to 60 mph in just a few seconds. Their ability to sprint at high velocity in pursuit of small, but speedy prey is short lived, often depleting their energy stores. Thus, it is imperative the cheetah trips up and subdues its prey quickly. Cheetahs are unlike most other cats in that their claws are only partially retractable, which helps to improve their traction while running. Given their sleek body shape, cheetahs are less able to defend themselves from other large predators like hyenas and lions.

Such competition with other predators, along with a natural genetic "bottleneck" and conflict with humans has made the species vulnerable to extinction. Its former range extended across much of Africa and Asia. Today it is restricted to shrinking and increasingly isolated grassland and savanna habitats in Africa and is most likely gone from Asia. Elevate Phoenix

Empowering & educating Arizona’s youth Kids in urban areas of this Valley are struggling. Faced with poverty, gangs, drugs, violence and dysfunction; their futures are put into jeopardy every single day.

One local group – Elevate Phoenix – is focused on doing something about it.

Founded just a few short years ago, Elevate Phoenix is a unique and often life-changing program for Arizona youth that provides in-school teaching; after-school mentoring/ tutoring; career instruction/ post-secondary preparation; character, life skills and peer leadership development; community service; adventure activities; and reading/ literacy improvement within urban public schools. Its mission is to strengthen character, empower knowledge and elevate relationships, and its success is directly measured by the success of its youth participants.

Currently, the organization reports a 98 percent graduation rate, and 90 percent post-secondary rate among participating youth in Arizona’s most urban communities.

“The heart of our success is the work of our team of fulltime, primarily ethnic staff who serve as teachers, mentors, and life coaches to students over multiple years. Teacher mentors are available to students 24/7,” Elevate Phoenix executive director, Tim Cleary says. “These one-on-one connections make in-school learning more effective.

As a part of this relational approach, Elevate Phoenix standardizes its learning objectives and equips staff to meet the varied learning needs of their students.”

Currently, Elevate Phoenix is serving 4,500 local students at a cost of just $222 per student.

As the nonprofit organization got off the ground, it was funded wholly by contributions from businesses and civic organizations. However, with an eye toward growing the number of children it serves, Elevate Phoenix is pleased to announce the launch of its first-ever signature fundraising event, Weekend Jetaway.

“Weekend Jetaway is the brainchild of AXA Advisors Southwest and partners as both a way to bring its own staff together on a volunteer effort and raise funds for local nonprofit – we are especially proud the funds will be used toward our local kids,” Dillan Micus, executive vice president of AXA Advisors Southwest, says.

Weekend Jetaway will take place in a private jet hangar within the Scottsdale Airpark Saturday, Nov. 1. It will feature live music, gourmet food from chefs across the Valley, dancing, a luxurious silent auction, and games – with the winner of the games from the evening taking home a free trip for four on a private jet.

Today, nearly 30 years later, Dr. McCaine works out of the Bayless Healthcare South Phoenix Clinic. There he is the Director of Training and Clinical Supervision for the Lighthouse High Risk Youth Program, where he helps young adults struggling with destructive behaviors develop new perspectives and skills for dealing with the obstacles they may encounter.

Tips for the PostDiagnosis Medical Waiting Game No matter what battle you may be facing, the pain of waiting and not knowing is still the same. Take it one day at a time.

Control the things you can control, focus on the day ahead, and keep a positive attitude.

The days and weeks following the diagnosis of a serious illness can be torturous. After the initial shock wears off, most patients and their caregivers are anxious for the next step so that they can begin to gear up for the fight that lies ahead – and what most find out is that the medical community doesn’t typically work on a schedule that is as hurried, as we might like.

For many patients, after an initial diagnosis, getting an appointment to see a decent specialist can take several weeks, and that’s if you are lucky. For many patients it can take much longer. Your nerves will be on edge and you will likely jump at the sound of the phone ringing. It can be an agonizing, frustrating, and helpless time for patients and their families.

Do everything that you can to expedite your consultation with a good specialist—no matter how many strings you have to pull or people you have to bother. Find ways to stay productively occupied in the days and weeks of waiting.

Here are seven suggestions for keeping busy and being proactive while you “hurry up and wait”:

Research the basics. You have left your doctor’s office with a diagnosis but not much more, and the fear of the unknown can be overwhelming. If you haven’t requested copies of all medical tests already, now is the time to do so.

This is the key to doing your own research before meeting with your medical specialist. The Internet can help you translate the big words that we laymen may not understand on the report. Create a long list of questions for your doctor to cover at your appointment. However, do not get too caught up in “Dr. Google.” There is a balance—you may find out more than you need or want to know.

You may be walking a line between ‘TMI’ and your own safety zone, but one thing is for sure—a good specialist will appreciate the effort you have made to get information upfront. If you don’t want to review all of the medical mumbo jumbo on the report, skip right to the summary on the back. Use the search engine on your computer to find out more — and be sure to write down the details. If some of the facts you uncover are a little scary, remember that every patient is different.

Review the credentials of the medical facility (and

potential second opinion facilities, too). Once you have a better understanding of the medical test results, you can then begin to search online for the best medical facilities for your particular diagnosis. It might not be the one you have been referred to; that may be only a starting point.

Location, location, location isn’t just the credo for business and house hunting. Just because one hospital is renowned for treating heart disease, you can’t assume that it’s rated well for neurosurgery. Read up on the annual caseloads, if you can find them, and search around for recommendations from patients who have actually received treatment at those facilities.

One of the most important things you can do in this phase is to network. Ask everyone you know about their own experiences with a local medical facility—whether it was a positive or negative experience. Many people stop short of simply asking for an honest evaluation, when it is the very information that could save their lives.

Call on your A-team. Even though the wheels may seem to turn slowly before the first meeting with your medical team, once you meet with them things can heat up quickly.

It pays to be prepared. Are you going to need some help with child care so you can go to appointments? What about

your pets? Can someone pick up your mail? How will you pay your bills if your treatment is done out of town?

These things may seem insignificant now, but having them handled can be a major stress relief in the midst of treatment. Friends and family will want to know how to help, and these tasks are the perfect response for you to give them when asked.

Keep up with your homework. Since you never know

what that first appointment will bring, it’s important to be as prepared as possible ahead of time. If you believe there is a chance the patient will be admitted, you may want to pack a small bag with necessities ahead of time to have on hand. Spend some time compiling lists of medical information, such as an up-to-date list of current medications, insurance provider information or a detailed write-up of symptoms and any previous treatment. Actual housekeeping isn’t a bad idea either. Having a clean home is essential when you are caring for a sick patient, and not having to come home to a pile of laundry after a hospital stay will give you peace of mind as well.

My motto when it comes to scenarios like this is that it’s better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it—especially if the hospital is a lengthy commute. In the days leading up to your first visit, you might want to make a few meals to freeze, or make sure the grass is cut.

Staying busy will keep your mind from focusing on concerns that you can’t do anything about yet. It will allow you to focus fully on the task at hand when the time comes, instead of worrying about small, ‘housekeeping’ details.

Quit procrastinating on the paperwork. No one likes

thinking about documents like their will, living will or health care power of attorney, especially when the shock of a diagnosis is still fresh. Most people look at these tasks negatively and so they avoid them. However, it’s important to think of it as something that you need to do for your family. It’s one of the things during this time that you can control and do proactively. Laws vary by state, so be sure to discuss specific requirements with an attorney or clerk of courts office. After you have completed your documents, store them in a safe place. Make sure that those closest to you know where they are and have a general idea of what your wishes are.

If you’re in a big hurry, there’s a document called ‘Five Wishes’ from an organization called Aging with Dignity.

It covers your health care power of attorney, the kind of medical treatment you do or don’t want (including extreme measures), and many other pertinent decisions. It can be filled out in 15 minutes, but does have to be witnessed. It is, however, much faster and easier than doing the legal documentation. As a last resort, write down a list of your basic wishes and have it notarized.

Give yourself a little reassurance about your insurance. It’s no secret that medical treatments can be financially devastating if you don’t have cooperation from your insurance company. Receiving upsetting financial news at the peak of an illness or mid-treatment can cause unnecessary stress on both the patient and the caregiver.

Take some time to get on the phone with your insurance provider before you begin any treatments or medical visits.

Ask questions, get a detailed listing of benefits, fill out any necessary paperwork, and figure out what your upfront costs may be. Knowing this ahead of time will allow you to make a financial plan, or identify sources of financial aid.

A call that takes 10 minutes to make can save you thousands of dollars and hours of unnecessary stress. While the patient’s needs must always come first, you’ll benefit in the long run if you prevent any future surprises.

Be prepared for an emergency. Even though your

scheduled appointment may still be a few days (or even weeks) away, it’s entirely possible that you will find yourself in a situation where the patient’s condition worsens quickly. In these types of situations, you need to be prepared to take immediate action. It’s a tough decision, because you may be in an emergency room for hours on end, and hospitals contain a high volume of germs that you don’t want the patient to be exposed to unnecessarily. However, there are times when it will be unavoidable, and you should be prepared to take all of the medical test results, medications, and information that you have already accumulated from the general practitioner with you. azhealthandliving.com | October 2014

Menopause Treatment & Breast Cancer Risk Upon reaching a certain age, women go through the natural process of menopause. This change typically occurs when a woman reaches her late 40s or early 50s.

The transition to menopause happens over several years and results in fluctuations of hormone levels in a woman's body. During this transition, many women experience a variety of symptoms, from mood changes to hot flashes to vaginal dryness. These symptoms can be so severe they impact daily activities and can impede quality of life.

Hormone replacement therapy, or HRT, may be prescribed to alleviate the side effects of perimenopause and menopause.

However, HRT is not without risks, including an increased chance of developing breast cancer.

According to The Mayo Clinic, HRT, which includes medications containing female hormones to replace the ones the body no longer makes naturally after menopause, used to be a standard treatment for women with severe symptoms. In the largest clinical trial to date, a combination estrogen-progestin pill was found to increase the risk of certain serious conditions, including blood clots, heart disease, stroke and breast cancer. This type of therapy also may make a woman's breasts appear denser on mammograms, making breast cancer more difficult to detect. When undergone for more than a few years, HRT has been confirmed by multiple studies to increase the risk for breast cancer.

Women concerned about HRT and cancer risk, especially those with a significant family history of breast cancer, generally want to avoid the use of hormone therapies.

However, what is a person who is experiencing many side effects of menopause that can be easily remedied by hormone therapy to do? Research into HRT alternatives has discovered a host of natural treatments that can provide relief.

Soy offers some promising results, especially with regard

to relieving hot flashes. Soy is very high in phytoestrogens, or plant estrogens.

Red clover and flaxseed are other sources of plant estrogens. Phytoestrogens are less potent than pharmaceutical estrogen, and scientists believe they do not contribute to breast cancer in the way natural or pharmaceutical estrogen may.

Black cohosh is a member of the buttercup family and is a perennial plant native to North America. Preparations of black cohosh are made from the roots and underground 28

stems. Black cohosh has long been used by natives of North America to treat malaise, gynecological disorders, rheumatism and other conditions. Black cohosh is now sold as an herbal remedy to alleviate hot flashes and excessive sweating in menopausal women. The National Institutes of Health awarded more than $7 million to the University of Illinois to study the efficacy of black cohosh and other herbs in treating certain symptoms of menopause.

Dong quai. This herb is in the celery family and native to

Asia. In Chinese medicine, dong quai has been considered a "female ginseng" because of its way of balancing the female hormonal system. As such, dong quai has long been used to relieve the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome and menopause.

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, researchers are unsure if dong quai acts like estrogen or blocks estrogen in the body, as studies have produced mixed results.

Lifestyle changes. Women may need to dress more

lightly, use a water atomizer to spray their bodies to cool down and keep their bedrooms cold to alleviate hot flashes.

Vaginal estrogen. If vaginal dryness and pain during

intercourse are the primary symptoms, vaginal estrogen rings or suppositories may be necessary. These provide estrogen directly to the affected area while only allowing very low levels to enter the bloodstream. In turn, vaginal estrogen may not increase breast cancer risk in the same way as other hormone therapies.

Hormone replacement therapy can alleviate menopausal symptoms, but also it can elevate breast cancer risk. Other options are available, and women can speak with their doctors about alternatives to HRT.

How to Manage Back Pain According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, lower back pain is the foremost cause of job disability around the world.

The most common causes of back pain include bulging discs, pinched nerves, arthritis, muscle spasms or strains, and sciatica, a nerve condition that goes from the lower back through the hips. Some cases of back pain are a result of poor posture or tight muscles. Here are a few steps to make this condition more manageable.

Contact your physician. Visit a doctor if you experience

numbness or tingling in their back, legs or arms; suffer pain after a fall; and/or are feeling pain with additional symptoms, including fever, trouble passing urine or unexplained weight loss. Such symptoms indicate that the back pain is more than just a temporary nuisance, and something that may need to be treated by a professional.

Exercise regularly. Regular exercises such as riding a

bicycle or swimming can improve strength and flexibility in the back. Yoga improves flexibility and builds strength while also promoting strong bones, which can reduce a person's risk of injury. Injuries that limit movement can increase a person's risk of developing back pain, so an exercise routine that builds flexibility and strong bones can be an effective way to manage or even prevent back pain.

Sit up straight at work. Many people can trace their back pain to their offices, where uncomfortable chairs and poorly positioned desks don't provide the necessary support men and women need to reduce or prevent back pain. Chairs should provide adequate lower back support, and desks should be at a comfortable height that does not force the body to hunch or place itself in another awkward position just to get work done. When sitting, make sure you are sitting upright with your shoulders relaxed and your body against the back of your chair.

Don't resort to too much rest. Too much sitting around has now been shown to worsen back pain. If you must rest, do so for only a day or two before gradually becoming more active. Swimming or walking can be great and less physically taxing ways to acclimate your body to physical activity after resting for a day or two due to back pain.

Caring for Yourself in the Midst of Stress You can’t avoid going through rough times in life, but you can decide how to respond to them.

Remember that your own health and sanity are paramount.

Everyone goes through rough spots in life—it’s an unfortunate but unavoidable fact. You might feel worried about an upcoming move, overwhelmed as you try to deal with an illness in your family or anxious about a looming project at work. Maybe you are simply worn down by the neverending stress and relentlessly hectic pace of modern life. If so, you’re not alone.

If you don’t focus on your own well-being when times are tough, you won’t have the mental, emotional, or physical energy you need to change external circumstances for the better, either. Here are a few strategies that you can put into practice to help you make it through the next rough spot in your life.

Realize that things will get better. When you are in the midst of a tough time, it’s easy to believe that things will never change. However, eventually, there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel. No matter how you feel right now, the truth is that you won’t be stressed, anxious, or overwhelmed for the rest of your life.

Think back on past obstacles you’ve overcome to give yourself motivation to press on and ask a trusted friend or family member to help you put your current struggle into perspective. This last strategy is particularly effective because not only will sharing your burden help to lighten it; the other person might be able to help you think of solutions you were unable to see on your own.

under stress. Staying hydrated helps you, stay energized, ensures that your body operates optimally, and can even improve the appearance of your skin.

Exercise. Working out is often the last thing you want to

do when life is tough. However, even a little bit of physical activity can work wonders in terms of how you feel. Exercise makes you feel more capable mentally and physically. It can help you sleep better, reduce feelings of stress, and even relieve symptoms of depression as effectively as medication.

Give yourself credit. When you are upset or worried about one aspect of your life, those feelings can easily spill over into your general attitude and outlook. You start looking at your whole life through a negative lens, and you might start to focus on the mistakes you have made and the things you could have done better.

If that sounds familiar, stop! Think of things you have done well in the recent past and give yourself credit for accomplishing them. Remember, nobody is even remotely close to perfect. Don’t make a tough situation even worse by remaining your own worst critic.

Prioritize. Especially when you are feeling, overwhelmed or stressed, it’s tempting to fixate on each shiny ball that rolls past instead of directing your energy and attention to the problem at hand. When your efforts are scattered, though, nothing gets done, and you end up feeling even more frazzled than you did at first. Remember, you can focus only on one or two big goals at a time, no matter how adept you are at multitasking.

As you work through the next rough spot in your life, sit down and decide what is most important to you. If spending time with your family is at the top of your list, then put them first and consciously make sure that other things remain on the back burner.

Say no. Many of us have trouble saying no for a variety of reasons. We don’t want to let others down, we don’t want to be seen as weak, we are afraid to refuse, etc. However, until you learn to say no when you need to, you’ll never be in the driver’s seat of your own life, and it will be more difficult to steer yourself out of draining, stressful situations.

Realize that you don’t have to do it all—nor should you.

You don’t have to make every decision, supervise every person’s schedule, chair every event, host every party, and come to the rescue every time something goes wrong.

Take time for yourself. Whether the current demands on your energy and time are coming from your family, job, friends, finances or something else, it’s important to get away every so often.

To make sure that you don’t become too drained and burned out, do something for yourself. Maybe it’s sitting down to

enjoy a cup of coffee in the midst of running errands, locking the bathroom door and taking a bubble bath, reading a motivational book during your lunch break, or going on a walk through the park. When you unwind and take a breather, your perspective will stay clearer and your stress will be more manageable.

In the end, you can’t avoid going through rough times in life, but you can decide how to respond to them. Remember that your own health and sanity are paramount, and most of all, have confidence that the sun will emerge from behind the clouds soon.

Q. I have a parent with glaucoma; if my vision seems OK, do I have to worry about glaucoma?

A. Glaucoma has traditionally been known as, the thief that takes your vision in the night. The disease damages delicate nerve fibers around the optic nerve when the pressure in the eye is too high. This elevation of pressure is, in the majority of afflicted individuals, not something that produces symptoms in its early stages. If left untreated for a long enough period, compression of nerve fibers in the retina leads to loss of areas of visual field. In general, when this loss progresses to the point of being noticeable, we have already lost the battle to preserve sight and we can only treat with medications, laser, or surgery to lower pressure to prevent future loss.

The key to treatment is to have your pressure checked (glaucoma test) routinely by your ophthalmologist. If you have a family history, have diabetes, or have had other inflammatory eye diseases in the past, then the statistics are a little higher that you may develop a glaucoma issue as well. We routinely recommend a glaucoma evaluation every year for individuals over age 40. If detected early and treated, the chances of preserving vision through eye drops or laser is excellent. If glaucoma does not respond to conservative measures, there are modern surgical procedures such as shunts that can also be utilized.

These are great for short-term relief, but they are often only indicated for short-term use. Long term or overuse is associated with many serious side effects including internal bleeding, heart issues and addiction. The study of neuroscience is offering some great alternatives to long-term pain medication use and its associated risks. The human body has its own inherent pain suppressing machinery and through simple non-invasive means, our patients can often reduce or eliminate their need for more drastic measures.

With electro-acupuncture, we can block pain transmission at the spinal cord level, which is terrific for spinal stenosis, sciatica and other forms of back pain. Specific stimulation of peripheral nerves can activate an area in the base of the brain, which blocks pain signals and provides excellent relief of neck pain, pinched nerves and headaches. Mild electrical stimulation of acupuncture points on the scalp can directly stimulate a part of the brain known as the motor cortex. Studies have shown this type of stimulation suppresses even the most difficult type of pain like post-stroke pain and RSD. These electro-acupuncture techniques are known as neuromodulation and they are the future of pain management.

More than 2 million American women have breast implants. Women with breast implants have not been shown to have an increased risk of breast cancer and, according to the FDA, “There is no evidence at present that women with breast implants are at an increased risk.” Studies are still in progress and the results may not be known for many years to come.

The presence of breast implants may interfere with mammography and early detection of breast cancer. Some doctors suggest that when the implant is placed under the muscle, the implant pushes the breast tissue forward and can make cancer detection easier.

Mammograms may be more uncomfortable since they require squeezing the breast with pressure. The pressure of mammography may rupture an implant or cause implant deflation with saline implants.

The American Cancer Society recommends that women ages 35 to 40 have a baseline mammogram. Between ages, 40 and 50, mammograms should be done every one to two years. Women over 50 should have a mammogram every year. Mammograms should be done more frequently when there is a family history of breast cancer.

Many choices need to be considered when getting a new pair of glasses.

The first thing is to ask yourself “What do you want your eyewear for?” The answer could be work, reading, driving or playing sports. Depending on the answer is how you would go about choosing a frame or even multiple frames. Most individuals could benefit from more than one pair of glasses.

A good comparison is shoes. Most people have multiple pairs of shoes because they participate in many different activities. The same shoes you were to a wedding usually would not work so well on the basketball court. The same principle applies to eyewear.

If you spend a majority of the day on the computer, but also need glasses to see to drive to and from work then a pair of occupational glasses to use at the computer, as well as, a distance pair may make the eyes feel and function better.

Another example is those that spend a large amount of time outdoors or a large amount of time driving may benefit from a pair of prescription sunglasses. Each individual has individual needs that need to be addressed when choosing a pair of glasses. With the recommendations from your eye doctor and with help from a good optician you can know which glasses are right for you.

In children, sometimes the problem results from swollen tonsils and/or adenoids that block the airway. It can also be caused by dental problems because malocclusion (misalignment) of the teeth is believed to affect the positioning of the airway. Even swollen nasal passages could cause your child’s problem breathing during sleep.

In these cases, it is a good idea to talk to your child’s pediatrician, his dentist and an ear, nose and throat specialist.

If your child is sleeping poorly and it isn’t due to a sleep-disordered breathing problem, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends a relaxing setting at bedtime —low lights and quiet. Don’t substitute watching television or videos for personal interaction with your child before bedtime.

When our children have trouble sleeping, it affects their lives, their health and our relationships with them. Be on the lookout for the signs—crabbiness, tiredness, headaches and the rest—as well as any possibility of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. While this could be a sleep-disordered breathing problem (or simply a problem sleeping) that deserves the attention of your child’s pediatrician, dentist and ENT, it also deserves yours.

A. Exercise builds up our body strength

and flexibility. However, vigorous exercise carries risks. It’s true that body movement helps us stay healthy, but if the joints and bones involved in exercise are not held stable with healthy ligaments and muscle tendons, they may result in injury and pain. A typical example in the daily life is the experience of excruciating low back pain while slightly bending forward for a range of motion movement.

The muscles are formed with millions of muscle fibers and cells. As our daily movements become frequent and intense, a series of painless micro-injuries of the muscle fibers may slowly build up and initiate pain and spasm. While dealing with pain and injuries, the progress of healing depends on your body’s biomechanical function such as proper body posture, joint movement and nutrition.

Here are some suggestions to help prevent injury and pain: Maintain proper bone alignment and movement.

A proper spinal curve and body posture are able to help maintain proper body’s biomechanical function and joint movement.

Exercise regularly. A simple, gentle range of motion exercise is essential to improve delivery of nutrients to and removal of metabolism waste products away from muscle fibers.

A. A hernia occurs when an abdominal organ or other tissue has abnormally protruded through the abdominal wall cavity. They may cause little to no pain at first. A hernia can be in your groin, on your abdomen, or associated with a previous scar. A bulge or hernia that is associated with redness, nausea, or severe pain can mean a strangulated hernia. A strangulated hernia is always a dangerous condition in which the blood supply to the hernia and to its contents is cut off. It must be addressed immediately before sepsis sets in, which can lead to death.

A hernia will not go away on its own and will not get better. Delaying treatment can only increase your risk for strangulation and increase your risk for complications. A strangulated hernia will require a traditional open surgery, a 3-5 day hospital stay, as well as a prolonged recovery time.

Laparoscopic surgery is best instituted early on, where healing, recovery, and postoperative pain are all significantly improved over traditional open surgery. A laparoscopic procedure allows for smaller incisions, quicker recovery, less pain and no hospital stay. Typically, the procedure can be done through three micro incisions in less than an hour.

Q. What is the latest news at Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park, for the new fall season?

A. Readers may recall that Wildlife World

Zoo & Aquarium celebrated the beginning of its 30th anniversary year with the grand opening of an all-new 15-acre Safari Park expansion Jan. 25. The Safari Park is the largest expansion since the Wildlife World aquarium opened in 2008.

Since that day, we have been patiently waiting on one more promised species to arrive.

Well, the wait is finally over and Wildlife World is pleased to welcome a pair of young cheetahs, now settling in their new habitat located inside the safari park. Cheetahs are a vulnerable species due to competition with other species, conflict with humans, and a low degree of genetic variation among the entire population.

Visitors can walk around the safari park as well as take an optional tram ride through several animal exhibits. Entrance to the Safari Park, located by the zoo's popular giraffe exhibit, is included with general admission.

As a USDA licensed, private institution, accredited by the Zoological Association of America (ZAA) and the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks & Aquariums (AMMPA), Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park receives zero taxpayer funding. No tax dollars have ever been spent to build or operate Wildlife World. and by now, most of the credible and legitimate agencies have developed and instituted a plan to provide health care to its staff.

However, one of the most dramatic changes our industry faces on Jan. 1, 2015, is the Department of Labor’s requirement of payment of minimum wage and overtime to our care staff.

Are Your Questions Sabotaging Your Relationships?

Better questioning skills will reduce resistance to your queries, and will help you establish more productive and meaningful dialogue.

Most people do not put much thought into the questions they ask—a mistake that can cause relationships to deteriorate and misunderstandings to abound.

It is usually not hard to pinpoint the moment when a conversation goes south. Often that downward spiral begins with a question. Maybe you ask a colleague, “Why did you format the report like this?” You ask your spouse, “Are your parents coming to dinner again?” You ask a stranger on the bus, “Could you move over?” These questions—and many others—may have seemed innocent when they were coming out of your mouth. However, fail to provide context, emphasize the wrong word, or just forget to add “please,” and you are suddenly in hot water.

Yes, questions can be tricky territory. The colleague in the scenario above gets defensive, the spouse assumes you hate her parents, and the stranger hears, “You’re taking up too much space!” Abrupt questions and the unanticipated responses they trigger are a peril of the times we live in.

Consider the ease with which we can turn to the Internet to answer virtually any question. It lulls us into thinking that questions are simple and that answers exist to meet our needs.

The frantic pace of life today just isn’t conducive to thoughtfulness or deliberation, which are two prerequisites of effective questioning.

Questioning is a higher-order communication skill that we have not taken seriously for centuries. The days of Socrates masterfully using questions to lead a conversation are long past. Yet even in 2014, we can make an effort to improve our questioning skills—and the first step is to curb our tendency to ask faulty questions.

In general, faulty questions are those we ask to indulge our personal, ‘I-based’ cravings to get an answer, to hammer 44

home a point, or to satisfy a narrow, personal curiosity.

Whether they are critical, tactless, unwanted, offensive, embarrassing, intrusive or loaded, these types of questions are likely to stifle dialogue and can cause relationships to deteriorate.

Instead, focus on what you can learn from or about another person. This “we-based” perspective, which reflects a broad curiosity about the person or topic you are discussing, will fuel conversations that are more meaningful and develop richer relationships.

Here are seven specific tips to help you improve your questions: Clarify your intent. It is especially important to know where you are going before you ask a question, because opening your mouth thoughtlessly can put distance between you and the other person. Think about what you are trying to learn, as well as your motives and the possible effects of your question, before you ask it. Remember, Ibased questions are often better left unasked.

Get and give permission. No one likes to have his or

her personal space invaded. When you are asking questions, remember that personal space is not just physical. It can extend to others’ memories, beliefs, identities, motives, etc. Before entering these territories conversationally, do not overlook the simple idea of asking permission: “May I ask you a question?” You can also tell the other person he or she does not have to answer.

Ask open questions whenever possible. If you are trying to gather information and expand your understanding, you will want to encourage the other person to talk more, not less. That is why open questions, which are designed to be answered in paragraphs, not in a few words, are so helpful.

They give the other person freedom to respond and help you to avoid unintentionally shutting off helpful information.

Here are some of the most versatile open questions: •

Additionally, you can readily construct open questions by using the phrases how did, how was, please describe, please explain, please discuss and please tell me more.

Use closed questions prudently. Closed questions are

easy to spot because they often start with words like who, when, where, is or do: “Who can help us get this done?”

“When is the project due?” “Where do I get more information?” “Is this the job you want?” “Do you like your boss?” Closed questions are useful for simple informational queries, for limiting the range of potential responses, or for expediting a conversation. However, be very careful not to slip into the habit of closing off your questions when you are trying to establish dialogue and encourage conversational participation.

Be polite. You will notice that please occurs frequently in

many examples and phrases above. This is pragmatic etiquette. Remember the stranger on the bus? When you asked, “Could you move over?” you got an icy glare in response and then suffered through an uncomfortable 20minute ride. What if instead you said, “I’m sorry, could I please trouble you to move over just a bit? Thank you so much!”

Let people talk. When there is a pause in conversation,

your first impulse may be to jump into the breach and fill it with whatever words first come to mind. However, especially when you are asking important questions, do your best to tame that impulse and hold your tongue.

People require some space to absorb information, formulate their responses and deliver them effectively.

Use nudges liberally. Nudges are stand-alone phrases like tell me more, I see and go on, which are often used following an open question to maintain the smooth flow of information. Nudges are a good way to let the speaker know that you are paying attention. People will usually be willing to share more if they believe that you are receptive and interested.

Living Inside Your Integrity Parents imagine this: you are standing there with

your enthusiastic child who is ready to go off into the world and you are asked by that same child for one piece of parting wisdom on how best to live their lives. You think, “What? I have been equipping my child with life leadership tools since they were young enough to understand words and now it’s all come down to one piece of advice?”

The bigger question: what did you end up telling

them? I posed the same question to myself recently and came to the conclusion that if I could hand off the most important building block of my son’s inner character, then everything else would take care of itself. I could trust that most of his decisions would be OK because of where his core/center was grounded.

My advice to him would be to “live inside your integrity” or, said more simply, be true to yourself.

This really is not a revolutionary new concept, is it?

You have heard and read this sentiment many times before, right?

You cannot live inside your integrity unless you know who you are. You have to be honest - standing up for who you really are - not whom you think you should be, and definitely not, who someone else thinks you should be. Integrity is about honesty and orienting everything in your life from your truth.

When you are living inside your integrity you are living your values, your own natural rhythm and you are honoring who you are as a person – from the inside out.

If you recently discovered you have been living from the outside in, have faith. All is well and consider your self-awareness a true gift. Stepping into the real you will enable you to become a life leader, and you will lead as yourself – your authentic “Self.”

You cannot live inside your integrity unless you know who you are. You have to be honest - standing up for who you really are.

Here are 10 ideas to share with your child to ensure they are best equipped at living inside their integrity.

Define you to yourself. No one can tell you how

to do that. Understand now that what may be “true” for others may not be true for you. Own it. The more you know your truth, the more you can communicate your truth.

Develop and own the words that reflect who you are on the inside. You will find language for your truth

(words, phrases). If you read great writers, you will find a collection of words that speak to you and ways of thinking about your “Self.” The more aware and awake you are, the more you will find these new truths that will resonate with you in ways that words cannot describe to others.

Live out your own values. Understand your natural orientation about the things you value and why you value them. It’s a choice only you can make.

Follow your passions and nurture them. A person

can feel intense depression when they are living their life for someone else or their expectations. A person becomes lost at how to find joy inside themselves if they aren’t following their own roadmap and can become dead to themselves because truly feeling joy can’t be based on someone else’s expectations.

Stop judging yourself, and others. You don’t need to

judge yourself for how you live your life and you don’t need to judge others for how they live theirs.

Your choice is your choice. Do you like vanilla or chocolate ice cream? Stop giving reasons! If you like vanilla it is simply because it’s your choice. Guilt is the same way.

It is a choice. You can choose to feel guilt, or to give love.

No is a complete one word sentence. It takes 10 times the commitment to say no than it does to say yes.

Take care of yourself first, so you can genuinely take care and serve others. The reason why is that you

cannot understand the information coming in, the situation, and know what it is really about before you know it for yourself. So, you have to apply it to you, your life. This is not a justification to be self-centered in an egotistical way.

Simply put, you cannot understand anybody else unless you understand yourself first. You cannot truly love someone else until you love yourself first. Only then can you understand others situations in relation to yours.

Be gentle on yourself. Everyone on the planet is on a personal journey unique to them, and we figure things out when we are ready. Don’t get caught up in the timing of your own awareness.

Remain vigilant about being aware, awake and knowledgeable, about the person who you are currently and how you are developing. Honor it. azhealthandliving.com |October 2014

How to Prevent Muscle Soreness Daily exercise is an integral part of a healthy lifestyle.

When paired with a nutritious diet, daily exercise can help men and women maintain their personal health and put them in a better position to battle many of the physical quirks that come with aging.

However, even the most ardent exercise enthusiast is periodically confronted with muscle soreness, which can interrupt an exercise routine and have a very negative impact on an individual's quality of life. Muscle soreness often appears the morning after a workout and can make something as simple as getting out of bed feel as difficult as climbing Mount Everest. The frequency and severity of muscle soreness depends on a host of factors, including how old someone is, how often a person exercises and how well that person performs certain exercises. While muscle soreness may seem like another unfortunate side effect of the aging process, there are ways to prevent such soreness.

Stay hydrated. Many people forget to drink water

Strength training can result in muscle soreness if men and women do not take certain preventive measures before, during and after their workouts.

when working out, and such forgetfulness can lead to muscle soreness. Roughly, 50 to 60 percent of a person's total body mass is water, but the body loses a lot of water during exercise, especially when that exercise is vigorous and causes lots of sweating. Losing a substantial amount of water can be debilitating and lead to muscle soreness, as muscle cells need water to recover fully from a workout. Therefore, it is important that men and women stay hydrated both during a workout and throughout the rest of the day. Carry a bottle of water with you when working out. You will be more inclined to drink water and stay hydrated during a workout if you have water with you as opposed to relying on repeated trips to the water fountain. One way to determine if you are drinking enough water during a workout is to make note of the color of your urine in the hours following the workout. If your urine is light yellow or clear, then you are probably drinking enough water to stay hydrated during and after the workout. If your urine is dark yellow or has an orange tint, then you need to make a stronger effort to stay hydrated during and after your workout.

Get some sleep. Sleep is another way to prevent or reduce the likelihood of developing muscle soreness. The body needs time to recover from exercise, and sleep is an integral part of that recovery process. Adults typically need between seven and eight hours of sleep per night, so be sure to get enough rest so your muscles can recover before your next workout. Muscle soreness may be your body telling you it was not given enough time to fully recover from a previous workout.

Cool down after a workout. If weight training is part of your workout routine, then it helps to cool down with some easy cardiovascular activity and light stretching after the weight-training portion of your regimen is over. This can improve blood flow throughout your body, and improved blood flow can speed your recovery time and reduce post-workout muscle soreness by bringing fresh oxygen and healing nutrients to the parts of your body that may feel sore after a workout.

Don't fight fire with exercise. Some people are tempted to fight muscle soreness by putting their muscles back to work. However, such an approach can lead to injury. When muscles are sore, they also experience a loss of strength, which makes them more susceptible to damage and injury. Rather than fighting muscle soreness by challenging the muscles, give them a rest as they recover from soreness and fatigue. Work muscle groups not experiencing soreness, or avoid weight training in favor of cardiovascular exercise and stretching.

For many men and women, muscle soreness is an unfortunate side effect of any active lifestyle. However, such active men and women can take various preventive measures to reduce their likelihood of developing sore muscles after workouts.

Posture, Beauty & Your Health To some extent, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but the things we consider beautiful usually share certain characteristics, with symmetry and vitality being chief among them.

The human body is an excellent example. The people we view as physically attractive are usually healthy and symmetrical in appearance. That’s not a coincidence; postural symmetry and good health go hand in hand.

Good posture – holding the head, shoulders, and trunk in perfect alignment – creates balance, which allows our many physiological systems to function optimally. When we habitually sit, stand or walk-in a less than a fully aligned position, muscles stretch or contract to accommodate. This can result in chronic imbalances that can lead to pain.

Studies dating back to the 19th century also suggest our posture affects mood, energy and self-confidence, all of which affect how attractive we appear to others.

You don’t see supermodels, A-list actors or the rest of the ‘beautiful people’ slouched over as they strut down the runway or red carpet.

Think about the importance of posture among the most challenging sports; for track runners, ballerinas and gymnasts, optimal posture is essential.

It’s not just sitting for hours on end that’s bad for you; it’s how one sits. The dangers of sitting have

garnered plenty of attention in recent years, especially since we have become a society of sitters. Sitting for long periods comes with many health risks, including obesity and cardiovascular disease. However, sitting with less than perfect posture – most frequently, sitting with the head and shoulder in a forward position over a desk – can cause significant neck pain, which involves muscles and nerves from the neck down. Proper posture can prevent neck and spinal damage.

More than 116 million Americans, or a third of the population, suffer from chronic pain at some point in their lives. That is according to a recent report from

the Institute of Medicine. Chronic pain means that a sufferer has anywhere from 30 to 60 days of lasting pain, and this massive problem is estimated to cost Americans $635 billion. For many, treatment and/or prevention is out of reach, however, a reliable and easy way to prevent chronic pain is to maintain good posture.

A strong, well-functioning core is crucial for training and optimal health. The bulk of a body’s

mass is located at and around one’s core, including the trunk and pelvis region. Today’s fitness fanatics firmly grasp the importance of a healthy core. Surprisingly, however, much of the health-conscious population today is muscle-centric and does not fully appreciate the importance of posture, even though proper posture facilitates core strengthening, especially while exercising.

How to Detect & Protect Against Workplace Bullying It is important to understand the signs and symptoms of a bully in order to help the victim and the victimizer deal with and exterminate the behavior.

Stories of workplace bullying are commonplace throughout the United States. In general, there are no legal repercussions for non-physical bullying except in specific cases, such as sexual harassment. In fact, bullying is a character trait that tends to be condoned in American society. Consider our national obsession – football. The object of this celebrated game is to get the ball to the other player’s goal, no matter what it takes trampling, hitting, pushing and screaming. If football is a metaphor for American society, then the winner is the person who pushes others out of the way and wins no matter the cost.

Bullies win by controlling situations and people around them. They crave power and the attention that comes from getting what they want.

The effects of working with a bully Adults have a difficult time performing their jobs effectively when subjected to bullying by a co-worker. It takes a toll physically because of our physiological responses to emotional stress. Typically, victims endure feelings of depression, guilt and shame, and they suffer sleep loss and fatigue. In some cases, victims begin to believe the bully’s behavior is warranted, and they develop feelings of worthlessness. They cannot complete tasks at the same level as others in their units.

The abuse takes a toll on victims in every way imaginable.

Are you a bully?

Being accused of being the bully can be difficult to accept.

You may believe your actions were unintentional, or a justified emotional response to provocation. Perhaps, you 56

see yourself as the only one in the office qualified to do anything right. However, whatever you have said or done, whether purposefully or not, you have created a culture of negativity for at least one person and you need to assess the situation and your role in it.

Symptoms that you may be the bully include: • Insulting a co-worker (remember, one person’s “joke” may be another's insult).

• Undermining another employee’s work by creating a hostile environment or perhaps by consistently calling his or her attention to flaws. (Bullies focus on a person, while constructive criticism focuses on a task.)

• As an employer, ignoring your employees’ suggestions.

• Humiliating your employee in front of others.

If any of these sounds like something that you may be doing, it is important to address this immediately with your victim. You may want to speak with your doctor about getting help, such as counseling, sensitivity training, anger management and other seminars.

It is important to understand the signs and symptoms of a bully in order to help the victim and the victimizer deal with and exterminate the behavior.

If you are a victim, diligently record workplace-bullying events. If you choose to make a formal complaint, you will be responsible for providing information should there be charges brought against the bully.

Working on Emotional Intelligence Skills

Personal power is a core leadership competency that everyone needs to develop before they can lead others. It has to do with being able to lead yourself.

We can help harness and learn to use our personal power by understanding and working on our Emotional Intelligence (EI) skills.

Emotional Intelligence is the ability to monitor one's own and others' feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them and to use this information to guide one's thinking and actions, according to psychologists John D. Mayer and Peter Salovey, who co-developed the concept and were two of the three authors of the Emotional Intelligence Test.

There are several emotional intelligence models. Here are Daniel Goldman’s five main EI mixed model constructs, and tips on how each of us can develop them.

Self-awareness: the ability to know one's emotions, strengths, weaknesses, drive, values, goals and recognize their impact on others while using gut feelings to guide decisions.

Tips for improving your social skills: · Pay attention to the feedback of friends and co-workers, good and bad. Train yourself to repeat the behaviors that get positive feedback and work on eliminating those that make people react negatively. · View constructive criticism as just that. When we become defensive, we don’t hear what can be very helpful feedback.

In order to become self-aware, you need to conduct an honest self-assessment to determine your strengths and weaknesses, such as powerlessness and inertia, and determine the root causes. You then need to create a plan that will help you overcome your fears, which are barriers to courage and stand between you and your successes.

· Learn to handle conflict and confrontation from a perspective of compassion and caring.

You cannot continue on the same trajectory or keep the same plans when the circumstances or facts have changed.

Social skills: managing relationships to move people in the desired direction.

Your social skills refer to your interpersonal skills or your ability to relate and connect with people, which can motivate them to deploy discretionary efforts to help you achieve goals that are best accomplished via partnership and collaboration.

Personal coaching can be very helpful in learning to be more diplomatic in your interactions with others.

Empathy: considering other people's feelings, especially Put yourself in the other person’s shoes and try to see situations from their perspective. Might they be feeling fear? Shame? Guilt? How do those emotions make you feel? Understanding and addressing the concerns of others is essential to EI. Always consider how your actions or decisions may affect individuals.

Motivation: being driven to achieve for the sake of achievement.

What motivates you? What are your benchmarks for success? Once you achieve certain levels of success, you need to set new benchmarks to keep chasing personal excellence!

Driving Safely While Aging

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as a person ages, his or her risk of injury on the road increases. Older adults and their family members need to make plans for handing dwindling skills behind the wheel, and the point in time when it is no longer safe for a loved one to continue driving.

In rural and suburban communities, driving is a necessity for independent living. With limited resources available for older individuals to get around, seniors may hold onto the notion of driving longer than is safe and practical. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that older people are involved in around 15 percent of all traffic accidents in a typical year.

Getting older doesn't mean it's time for you or a loved one to turn in your license just yet. There are ways people can come together to make the driving experience go smoothly, and it often begins with an honest conversation.

Let a loved one know you are on his or her side.

Make sure the first topic of conversation is that it is not your intention to take away the keys of the car. Indicate that you want to work together to help keep this person behind the wheel as long as possible. Being open and honest about intentions may eliminate arguments or animosity.

Figure out safe ways to keep your loved one driving.

This may include identifying a new car with upgraded safety features, such as brighter headlights, a backup camera and 60

a better safety record. Enroll together in a driving safety course to brush up on driving skills.

Go for a test drive. Family members can ride along with

an older driver to get a better sense of his or her ability behind the wheel. If drivers have too many close calls, frequently get lost in familiar places, exhibit slower response times or are easily distracted, this should be a wake-up call and the loved one should intervene.

Schedule a vision and hearing exam. Driving abilities can be affected by poor vision and hearing, both common side effects of getting older. Getting a senior a new eyeglass prescription or a better hearing aid may make all the difference in his or her driving ability.

Review prescriptions and over-the-counter medications.

Many seniors take a bevy of different medications, and the side effects to these drugs could impact their driving abilities. If medications cause drowsiness or dizziness, speak with your loved one's physician about a possible alternative treatment that might make driving safer.

Be honest. If an older driver is no longer safe behind the wheel of their automobile, it is important to involve other family members and make a joint decision to remove driving privileges. Have other solutions available, such as senior busing or courtesy vans, so your loved one doesn't feel he or she will be confined to the house.

Will Your Beneficiaries Beat the Odds?

Two-thirds of baby boomers will inherit a total $7.6 trillion in their lifetimes, according to the Boston College Center for Retirement Research. However, they will lose 70 percent of that legacy, and not because of taxes.

By the end of their children’s lives – the third generation – nine of 10 family fortunes will be gone.

The third-generation rule is so true; it’s enshrined in Chinese proverb: Wealth never survives three generations.

The American version of that is ‘shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves’ in three generations. There are a many reasons why this happens, and most of them are preventable.

How can the current generation of matriarchs, patriarchs and their beneficiaries beat the odds? The solutions involve honest conversations – the ones families often avoid because they can be painful – along with passing along family values and teaching children from a young age how to manage money.

Give them some money now and see how they handle it. Many of the wealth builders, the first generation who worked so hard to build the family fortune, teach their children social responsibility; to take care of their health; to drive safely. However, they don’t teach them financial responsibility; they think they’ll get it by osmosis.

If those children are now middle-aged, it’s probably too late for that. However, the first generation can see what their offspring will do with a sudden windfall of millions by giving them a substantial sum now – without telling them why.

The best way they’re going to be able to help preserve the wealth is if they understand what goes into creating it and managing it – not only the work, but the values and the risks.

Be willing to relinquish some control. Whether it’s preparing one or more of their children to take over the family business, or diverting some pre-inheritance wealth to them, the first generation often errs by retaining too much control.

We don’t give our successor the freedom to fail. If they don’t fail, they don’t learn, so they are not prepared to step up when the time comes.

In the family business, future successors need to be able to make some decisions that don’t require the approval of the first generation. With money, especially for first generation couples with more than $10 million (the first $5 million of inheritance from each parent is not subject to the estate tax), parents need to plan for giving away some of their wealth before they pass. That not only allows the beneficiaries to avoid a 40 percent estate tax, it helps them learn to manage the money.

Give your beneficiaries the opportunity to build wealth, and hold family wealth meetings. The first generation works and sacrifices to make the family fortune, so often the second generation doesn’t have to and the third generation is even further removed from that experience.

The best way they’re going to be able to help preserve the wealth is if they understand what goes into creating it and managing it – not only the work, but the values and the risks.

The first generation should allocate seed money to the second generation for business, real estate or some other potentially profitable venture.

Holding ongoing family wealth meetings with your advisors is critical to educating beneficiaries, as well as passing along family and wealth values. It also builds trust between the family and the primary advisors.

At this point, it’s no longer about what their money will do for them — it’s about what the next generations will do with their money.
