Σκοπός του εργαστηρίου ήταν η κατανόηση του χώρου της πρώτης προβλήτας του λιμανιού της Θεσσαλονίκης μέσω της επεξεργασίας των αντιληπτικών ποιοτήτων και της επινόησης προσωπικών χαρτογραφικών μεθόδων. Έχοντας ένα προηγούμενο ενδιαφέρον για τη σωματικότητα, αποφάσισα να εστιάσω στις διαφορετικές μυρωδιές που προέρχονται από πολλές πηγές ταυτόχρονα. Ξεκίνησα να πειραματίζομαι με τη δημιουργία χαρτών και διαγραμμάτων ήδη από την πρώτη επίσκεψη. Κατά τη διάρκεια των πολυάριθμων επισκέψεών μου στην προβλήτα, αντιλήφθηκα την ύπαρξη ακόμη περισσότερων οσμών. Η ένταση των οσμών απεικονίστηκε τόσο από κύκλους όσο και από διαγράμματα στρωμάτων έντασης. Ο αέρας είναι ένας από τους λόγους που μπορούμε να μυρίσουμε διαφορετικές μυρωδιές, κάτι που με παρότρυνε να κάνω ένα διάγραμμα διαδρομής ανέμου που δείχνει πώς ο άνεμος ταξιδεύει μέσα από διαφορετικές ώρες της ημέρας, ενσωματώνοντάς το στη συνέχεια με διαφορετικά χρώματα που αντιπροσωπεύουν τις οσμές. Επίλεξα μια μέθοδο απεικόνισης για να δημιουργήσω δύο ακόμα, τρισδιάστατα αυτή τη φορά, διαγράμματα τόσο του εξωτερικού όσο και του εσωτερικού χώρου κάποιων κτιρίων. Στη συνέχεια προσπάθησα να εντοπίσω την πηγή από την οποία προέρχονται οι οσμές μέσω διαγραμμάτων πρόσοψης. Συντάχτηκε ένα ερωτηματολόγιο και δόθηκε σε ανθρώπους που βρίσκονταν στην πρώτη προβλήτα του λιμανιού ή την είχαν επισκεφθεί πρόσφατα. Συλλέχτηκαν μερικές ενδιαφέρουσες απόψεις και δεδομένα. Στη συνέχεια, με τη βοήθεια της διδακτορικής διατριβής της κυρίας Βασιλαρά, “Recordings of Olfactory Landscapes” κατανόησα τη σημασία, τις λειτουργίες, την αποδοχή και την ανοχή των οσμών. Εμπνευσμένος τόσο από τη διατριβή όσο και από τις απαντήσεις από τα ερωτηματολόγια δημιούργησα δύο κολάζ που δείχνουν θετικές και αρνητικές λειτουργίες. Προσπάθησα να φανταστώ τις μυρωδιές ως στρώματα ή “μπλοκ”, με ένα διάγραμμα χωρικής ποσότητας και πώς γίνονται αντιληπτές σε έναν εξωτερικό χώρο. Από τις απαντήσεις του ερωτηματολογίου, παράχθηκε ένα διάγραμμα συναισθημάτων χρησιμοποιώντας γραμμές που αντιπροσωπεύουν τα συναισθήματα των ανθρώπων. Τέλος, σχεδίασα ένα συνδυαστικό διάγραμμα με όλες τις πληροφορίες που συλλέχθηκαν και με τις τεχνικές καταγραφής από τις προηγούμενες διαφάνειες, περιγράφοντας μια βόλτα στην προβλήτα. Συνοψίζοντας, θα έλεγα πως το αποτέλεσμα αυτού του εργαστηρίου οδήγησε σε μια ευαισθητοποίηση και διεύρυνση της αντίληψής μου των ποιοτήτων του χώρου, σε καλύτερη κατανόηση της συγκεκριμένης περιοχής, των αξιών της, των χρήσεων, των σκέψεων των ανθρώπων και κυρίως των αρωμάτων και του πώς μπορούν να επηρεάσουν και να χαρακτηρίσουν την εμπειρία του χώρου.
The purpose of the workshop was to explore the space of the first pier of the port of Thessaloniki through the processing of perceptual qualities and the invention of personal mapping methods. Having a previous interest in physicality, I decided to focus on the different smells coming from many sources at once. I started experimenting with creating maps and diagrams from the very first visit. During my numerous visits to the pier, I became aware of even more smells. Odor intensity was illustrated by both circles and intensity layers diagram. Wind is one of the reasons we can smell different smells, which prompted me to make a wind path diagram showing how the wind travels through different times of the day, then incorporating it with different colors representing the smells. I chose a visualization method to create two more, three dimensional this time, diagrams of both the exterior and interior of some buildings. I then tried to locate the source of the odors through facade-elevation diagrams. A questionnaire was drawn up and given to people who were at or had recently visited the first pier of the port. Some interesting views and data were collected. Then, with the help of Mrs. Vassilara’s PhD thesis, “Recordings of Olfactory Landscapes” I understood the meaning, functions, acceptance and tolerance of odors. Inspired by both the thesis and the responses from the questionnaires I created two collages showing positive and negative functions. I tried to imagine smells as layers or “blocks”, with a diagram of spatial quantity and how they are perceived in an outdoor space. From the questionnaire responses, a sentiment diagram was produced using lines representing people’s feelings. Finally, I drew a combination diagram with all the information gathered, the recording and mapping techniques from the previous slides, describing a walk at the pier. In summary, I would say that the result of this workshop led to an awareness and broadening of my perception of the qualities of the space, to a better understanding of the specific area, its values, the uses, the thoughts of the people and especially the scents and how they can influence and characterize the experience of the space.
This is my first imression of the existing smells during my first visit to the port pier.

The project Unvailing the aromatic canvas took place within the framework of art and architecture workshop “Post-Platform: detecting the unseen, tracing the forthcoming” and within the framework of the international program “A sea change”, in collaboration with Momus Experimental Arts Center and the Master’s program “Advanced Design: Innovation and Transdisciplinarity in Design” from 20/10/2023 to 20/12/2023, under the supervision of the associate professor of the architectural engineering department of AUTH, Nadia Kalara.
