A DAY TO CELEBRATE
G. Jeff Golden jgolden@ourcoloradonews.com The crown jewels of Western Welcome Week, without a doubt, are Festival Day and the Grand Parade. More than 75,000 people have visited historic downtown Littleton for Festival Day in previous years, WWW Director Cindy Hathaway said. The Grand Parade is from 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 20, but events begin as early as 6:30 a.m. and run until 9:30 p.m. A children’s parade will immediately precede the main one beginning at 7:30 a.m. The 2011 parade has more than 100 entries, including 11 high school marching bands from across the state, Hathaway said. The parade route, which is unchanged from
previous years, begins at the intersection of Littleton Boulevard and Gallup Street and ends at Rapp Street and Church Avenue. But the parade is only a small part of Festival Day. Approximately 260 booths will be set up downtown, featuring sponsors, nonprofit organizations, concessions, merchants and entertainers. Two stages will be set up, with one devoted to family-friendly music and the other to dancing. The Elks Lodge will even open its doors to the public, which is a rare occurrence. “It’s pretty much a day full of lots to do,” Hathaway said. As with most events downtown, Reinke Bros. will be a full participant. The store will offer a sneak preview of its haunted
mansion and provide a third stage for entertainment, Hathaway said. Most of the day’s events are family friendly, but there will also be a dedicated children’s area. Kids of all ages can enjoy free games and activities, some of which center on teaching safety. A rescue unit from Rural Metro Ambulance will be on display for visitors to tour. Western Welcome Week began on Aug. 1, 1929, when Littleton Independent editor Houston Waring helped organize Homecoming Days, calling for all those who had previously lived in or visited Littleton to return. The event was renamed Western Welcome Week in 1962. The parade prize for the best use of the annual theme is named in Waring’s honor.

FAMILY ON PARADE — LITERALLY Sonya Ellingboe sellingboe@ourcoloradonews.com Who could be more appropriate as Western Welcome Week Parade’s Grand Marshals than active Littleton natives Terry McElhaney and his sister Jeannie McElhaney Pershin? Especially since the theme chosen for the Grand Parade in 2011 is “Family on Parade.” This will be the 83rd annual celebration, running from Aug. 10-21. The two own and operate Romancing the Bean, the popular coffee shop at the Downtown Littleton Light Rail Station . They grew up with two brothers on Bemis Street and attended St. Mary’s School. In thinking about WWW traditions, they remember what fun they had with decorated bikes in the Western Welcome Week Children’s Parade, as well as competing in the Fishing Derby and other kids activities. She later graduated from Littleton High School and he from Mullen High School. Some years later,
they still work in the area and cheerfully volunteer long hours in their hometown. They opened the cozy shop in 2000 on the same day the RTD Southwest Light Rail Line opened, carrying the first of thousands of passengers into Denver and back. “The plumber was still on the floor during those opening ceremonies,” Pershin recalls. There are many regular coffee customers, including some who board at the Mineral Station, get off and enjoy their morning coffee at the historic Denver and Rio Grande depot-turnedcoffee shop, then catch a later train into town. Pershin had operated a small coffee shop at the Englewood Library and when she learned that the century-old depot was to be located at the Light Rail Station, she asked her brother if he would join her in operating a business there. They lease the space from the City of Littleton and care for it. RTD owns the land.
The sitting-room side, with its padded benches, easy chairs, plants, historic photos and reading material belongs to the city and the pair furnished the coffee shop side, with its glass front showcases that contain pastries as well as train memorabilia. Coffee machines, sodas and refrigerated space for breakfast burritos and other items available fill the compact shop. Terry uses his graphics training as communications director for the South Metro Denver Chamber of Commerce and he also created, and maintains an online directory and illustrated monthly e-newsletter for the Historic Downtown Littleton Merchants, which he signs as “the man behind the curtain,” a la Wizard of Oz. He also designs the annual HDLM directory and arranges for printing. Both volunteer for the chamber and for HDLM events and look forward to a busy week in August, surrounded by community activities.
ALWAYS A FUN TIME FOR KIDS
Tom Munds tmunds@ourcoloradonews.com Since Western Welcome Week is a familyfriendly event, it is natural that there is a long list of activities designed for the younger set that are free or very affordable. Music will be the focus Aug. 12 during the Family Night Concert and Fireworks in the Park. The event will be 6 to 10 p.m. in Sterne Park. The Denver Municipal Band provides the music and the evening is capped off with a fireworks display. Activities abound on Aug. 13 with gold panning on the Platte from 9 a.m. to noon at the Carson Nature Center and the annual Littleton Elks-sponsored children’s fishing derby from 10 a.m. to noon at Geneva Lake. Anglers compete for prizes for the largest catch, volunteers are on hand to provide tips on how to catch the big one and there are free hot dogs for contestants. A TIME-TESTED TRADITION G. Jeff Golden jgolden@ourcoloradonews.com Western Welcome Week doesn’t appear to be broken, so the organizers don’t have to change much each year to fix it. Other than a new theme – Family on Parade – attendees likely won’t notice much difference between the 2011 edition and its 82 predecessors. All of the familiar favorites will be returning, adding up to a total of more than 50 events. “I would say 95 percent of our events come back each year,” said WWW Director Cindy Hathaway. Parade entries are encouraged to adopt this year’s theme, which was chosen in part because the entire week puts a heavy emphasis on family fun. The Houstoun Waring Tro-
phy is awarded to the float that best represents the theme each year. Keeping with the topic, one of the few new events in 2011 is a skate night at Skate City, 5810 S. Lowell Way, from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 14. A combination of a roller skate rental and a slice of pizza will be offered for $4. “It’s a very inexpensive family evening,” Hathaway said. Another new, one-time addition this year will be Arapahoe County’s 150th Birthday Bash. Arapahoe is Colorado’s first and oldest county, and residents are invited to Bega Park for free cookies, hat decorating and photo opportunities. Mascots Connie Cow, Parker Pig and Henry Horse will be on hand to
entertain children. Western Welcome Week runs from Aug. 10-Aug. 21. The highlight of the week is Festival Day on Aug. 20. A full day of events will be offered in historic downtown Littleton, including the Grand Parade from 10 a.m. to noon. More than 75,000 people have attended in previous years, Hathaway said.

The pages of time are turned back from 9 a.m. to 11 Aug. 14 at Arapahoe Community College where kids play games that date back generations. The free event offers the chance to shoot a bow, milk a “cow” or ride a bronc. Nearby on the ACC lawn, kids 12 and under can try their hand at the Bruce Wolf Stick Horse Stampede. Stampeders can bring their own stick horse or there will be horses for sale. Registration begins at 9 and the stampede begins at 10. There are ribbons for all participants and special ribbons for the winners. The kids can chuckle a bit if they stay and watch the Senior Stampede that follows. A little later that day, kids can take their parents to the Stern Park Bridge on Little’s Creek for the Brad Bradford Rubber Ducky Race. Buy a duck to enter the race and the chance to win cash or prizes. If the family still has energy, they can travel a short way down the road from 6 to 8 p.m., strap on the wheels and join the Family skate Night at Skate City. One of the most popular WWW events is the Littleton Fire Firefighter’s Children Parade that will be held through takes place from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Aug. 20, beginning at Bega Park. The event is for children under 14 and this year’s theme is “Families on Parade.” Entries categories include pedestrians, wheels, floats and leashed pets. The wheels category includes bikes, skateboards, in-line skates and electric-powered vehicles. From noon to 5 p.m. , the focus shifts to the area in front of the Melting Pot on Main street for the Kids and Family Stage featuring kids entertainment and singalongs. At the same time, the Fun for Kids Corner will be going on in the Valley Feed and Lawn parking lot where there are free games, activities and prizes for “kids of all ages.” For those who want a little more frightening experience, there are sneak previews of the Reinke Brother Haunted Mansion at 5336 S. Prince Street will be going on from noon to 6 p.m. There will also be midway fun, games and a band on stage in the parking lot.
