A few of these mares bring plenty of potential, not least Jamie Snowden’s LA CONQUIERE who came in a highly promising runner-up for her new yard in a Grade 2 Aintree bumper in the spring. She is taken to go one better now starting out hurdling, although Nicky Henderson’s Eremenko was an impressive debut bumper scorer at Southwell and commands lots of respect too. Others to consider in an intriguing contest include Dream Shadow, Twistthenightaway, Crystal Days and Feet On The Ground.

LONGEST TRAVELLER: SAINT CYR DE PAIL trained by Mrs J Williams, South Molton, 200 miles.

Conditions are unlikely to be anywhere as testing as they were when HEEZTHEBOY made a winning start for this yard at Hexham, but if the quicker ground doesn’t prove to be an inconvenience the 8-y-o could take some stopping. Scottish King’s chase debut second here was encouraging and he will be a threat if able to build on that, while Saint Cyr De Pail is also interesting. Race preview from Weatherbys

It is an absolute pleasure to be sponsoring the Weatherbys & Birdie CalendarsHandicapHurdle at Uttoxeter this afternoon, a Class 4 event staged overtwo-and-a-halfmiles.

Unexposed five-year-old The Long Walk islikelytobepopularinthemarketforthe Jonjo and A J O’Neill team on the back of his impressive, wide-margin maiden hurdle success at Warwick when last seen in May. Both the third and fifth from thatracehavewonsinceandanopening mark of 113 could prove lenient for this half-brothertosmarthurdlerTripoliFlyer.

Ffos Las bumper winner As Legends Have It has a similar profile and, whilst winless in three hurdles starts last term for Ben Pauling, did show some good form in defeat when chasing home nice types. The six-year-old is out of a Grade 2-placed mare and can make his mark now handicapping from an opening ratingof113.

Top-weight Taras Halls was an impressive winner over fences here last December and reverts to hurdles on his firstrunoftheseason.Whilstwinlessover hurdles, he showed some nice form over thesmallerobstaclesinhisnovicehurdle campaignandcouldbewelltreatedfrom amarkof115.JohnBarbourwonabumper here last season and should improve for his reappearance when looking in need of the run, whilst Shengai Enki won at

the track over hurdles last May and the consistent six-year-old makes his stable debutforBarryBrennanhere.

Jackpot Cash proved incredibly progressive once joining the James Owen stable last term, winning four of his seven starts over both hurdles and fences. The six-year-old unseated over fences on seasonal debut at Huntingdon and reverts to hurdles here just 3lbs higher than when second in a good race atWorcester.

Stuart Edmunds’ Ilitch built on a good second on handicap debut to score at Fontwell in March and shed his maiden tag over hurdles at the fourth time of asking. Raised 5lbs for that success, the Authorizedgeldingshouldimproveagain for the step up in trip. Charlie Longsdon’s Book Of Tales hasn’t won since scoring on hurdles debut at Fontwell over two years ago but has remained lightly raced since. The five-year-old closed the last campaign with a pair of decent effortsinhandicapcompanyandshould appreciatethisstepbackupintrip.

Both Harper Valley and Streamsforth Lad have the benefit of a recent run, the latter finishing third over course and distance last month, whilst Swift Jet should improve with further experience backdownintriphere.

A case can be made for a few of these but Ben Pauling’s AS LEGENDS HAVE IT looks to have got in quite lightly for his first venture into handicap company so earns the vote from James Owen’s thriving Jackpot Cash who rates a big danger Returning duo The Long Walk an Ilitch both look to have more to offer too and can also have a say in this cracking handicap. Harper Valley completes the shortlist.

KALAHARI KING (FR)

It may be unusual for a horse who never ran at Uttoxeter to have a race named in his honour, but KALAHARI KING has a close association as his owners are local and keen supporters of the Racecourse and their company, PEKTRON Ltd, sponsor again today in addition to being long-standing Box Holders

KALAHARI KING ran in the red and white quartered colours of his owner Julie Morgan and took his connections on the journey of a lifetime, becoming a regular sight at major festivals for over 5 years racing on English turf after his earlier days in France. He made an immediate impact on the Jumps scene, running in 49 races, winning 12 and was placed in 14 He had career earnings of over £430,000

In his first season he won at Musselburgh before making the first of his 5 visits to the Cheltenham Festival, where he finished 4th in the Grade 1 Supreme Novices' Hurdle He was placed in the Scottish Champion Hurdle and later won easily at the Punchestown Festival.

The following year he won three Novice Chase’s en route to Cheltenham for a tilt at the Arkle, where he finished second in a photo-finish. Later, at Aintree, he won the Grade 1 Maghull Novices' Chase in decisive style. He made three further trips to Cheltenham, finishing 3rd in the Queen Mother Champion Chase and the following year finishing 2nd in the Ryanair Chase.

He was retired in 2012, with his official handicap mark of 163, just below his career high of 166.

He was a horse of a lifetime of Neil and Julie Morgan but after 12 happy years in retirement they were sad to say goodbye to him when he passed away last year.

We thank Neil and Julie Morgan of PEKTRON for their support of the race from which a future star may develop.
