AT 4 MAY LIVEAFTERRACING S Y THE STAFFORDSHIRE PLATE FT. Official Raceday Programme | £3.50

Welcome to our ABBA Party Raceday featuring the Carlsberg Marston’s Staffordshire Plate. Today’s raceday features the jump season opener and a particularly warm welcome goes to our sponsors today, Carlsberg Marston’s, Hatmill & Adept GRP Cabinets

We have the honour of having the first race in the new jump season with our feature race today, the “Carlsberg Marston’s Staffordshire Plate Handicap Chase” which is a Class 2 race with an impressive £35,000 up for grabs.

We have a fantastic day’s entertainment lined up for you today. Watch out for Lou Macari who will be mingling in the crowds doing a meet and greet with racegoers. Head over to the photo wall outside the office, for those of you who have come dressed as your favourite ABBA stars. There will be prizes for the winner of the best outfit. Then straight after racing we have a 90-minute ABBA Revival concert so I hope you have brought your dancing shoes!

This is the first of our exciting music acts this year as we edge closer to our busy Summer calendar.

On Saturday 18th May we welcome Ocean Colour Scene who will be joining us for our popular “Music Live” Raceday, followed by Scott Mills Does Pop racenight (featuring Gareth Gates) on Saturday 15th June. The tickets for Ladies Day (with Roman Kemp) on Friday 26th July are selling fast with hospitality virtually sold out So, I would advise to book soon to avoid disappointment.

Thank you for supporting us today and we all hope you have a great day.

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

ëëëëë Selected to win the race

ëëëëê Good chance of being placed

ëëëêê By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.

ëëêêê Unlikely to win but not totally without hope

ëêêêê Can be given little or no chance

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances) The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non handicap races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Can’t Resist It is entitled to improve on his opening effort in this sphere at Huntingdon, while Came From Nowhere was quite impressive in a Taunton bumper last month and warrants respect, also.

FARCEUR DU LARGE shaped as if still in very good form when fifth in the Midlands Grand National here 7 weeks ago, the combination of the much longer trip and a stopping blunder in the straight exaggerating the distance he was beaten, and he’s fancied to resume winning ways back down in distance. Ballygrifincottage is another who shaped better than the bare result when seventh in the Scottish National and rates a big threat if this doesn’t come too soon. In-form Imperial Alex is best of the rest.
