HORSE AND JOCKEY WELFARE AT HEREFORD

Nothing matters more to us when racing than the safety and welfare of both horse and rider. Central to that is the track itself and our groundstaff do everything in their power to provide an optimum racing surface. On duty today we also have a dedicated and experienced team of highly-qualified Vets, Doctors and Paramedics following the action at every stage Their key responsibility is to monitor and provide care to the competitors throughout their time at the racecourse. The locations and vehicle movements of these skilled specialists during racing are designed to provide a rapid response to any incident across the site. We also have a high-specification horse ambulance in attendance at every fixture to enable safe transport of a horse from the track to our on-site veterinary treatment facility for further treatment, or to the nearest equine referral hospital

It is our standard practice to erect screens around any horse or jockey requiring attention on the course as this provides privacy and a safe, calm environment in which to accurately diagnose and treat the patient as necessary. Please do not assume the worst if screens are erected around a horse We are fully committed to minimizing risk in our sport, to dealing professionally and efficiently with any injury, and to maintaining the highest possible quality of care for the horses and jockeys racing here today. Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

Selected to win the race

Good chance of being placed. By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

Unlikely to win but not totally without hope

Can be given little or no chance

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions.

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating for novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Celebrating 30 Years In Training

Venetia Williams celebrates 30 years as a trainer this November, an achievement that we mark today. In that time she has saddled over 1,700 winners, netting almost £23 million in prize money and making her the winningmost female National Hunt trainer.

Based near the village of King’s Caple, ten miles away from Hereford racecourse, the track has been the venue for 86 of those winners, which from 450 runners represents an impressive strike rate over such a long period of 19%. Venetia also trains the Hereford Racecourse Racing Club horse Johnny Boy.

Venetia rode as an amateur, including in the 1988 Grand National, before a fall in which she broke her neck compelled her to retire. Looking to set up as a trainer, she worked for Martin Pipe and John Edwards and gained further experience in France, the USA and Australia. Down Under she was so impressed by the practice there of turning the horses out for a few hours every day, so that they could move around more, enjoy the open air and have a chance to grazes This goes against traditional training methods, especially in the very different British climate, but perhaps it is a factor that contributes to the success she has had so often with soft-ground horses and stayers

Aramstone

Surrounded by beautiful countryside near Ross on Wye, Aramstone is the perfect place to train racehorses and a wonderful location for owners to visit.

Starting with only a few stables and half a dozen horses, as Venetia's career flourished Aramstone grew to become the modern racing establishment it is today.

Now, the stables offer all the up to date facilities associated with training racehorses, including three gallops, an equine pool and, uniquely, 50 turn out paddocks.

Her most high-profile success was Mon Mome in the 2009 Grand National. He was sent off at 100/1 despite landing a good Cheltenham handicap earlier in the season. At Aintree he beat the previous year’s winner Comply Or Die by 12 lengths. Venetia became the first female trainer to take the race since Jenny Pitman.

Mon Mome joins us today in the parade ring at 11:15

Lady Rebecca Mon Mome

Possibly her most popular horse was the classy mare Lady Rebecca, a £400 purchase who won thirteen of her nineteen races between 1996-2001. Seven of those wins were at Cheltenham, including three consecutive Grade 1 Cleeve Hurdles

Teeton Mill

Teeton Mill won the Hennessy Gold Cup and King George VI Chase and was favourite for the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Venetia also won two Welsh Grand Nationals, with Jocks Cross in 2000 and Emperor’s Choice in 2014, and more recently dual Betfair Chase victor Royale Pagaille and L’Homme Presse have been winning and placing consistently at the highest level.

HORSE AND JOCKEY WELFARE AT HEREFORD

Nothing matters more to us when racing than the safety and welfare of both horse and rider Central to that is the track itself and our groundstaff do everything in their power to provide an optimum racing surface. On duty today we also have a dedicated and experienced team of highly-qualified Vets, Doctors and Paramedics following the action at every stage Their key responsibility is to monitor and provide care to the competitors throughout their time at the racecourse The locations and vehicle movements of these skilled specialists during racing are designed to provide a rapid response to any incident across the site.

To find out more about our Equine Welfare policy, please visit our website www.hereford-racecourse.co.uk
