Irene Copie has been creating pysanky (pronounced pih-sahn-KIH) for nearly 40 years. She immigrated to the United States from Ukraine when she was just 4 years old. As she grew older, she learned to create, beautiful pysanky following the traditional process of Ukrainian artists before her. Pysanky (plural or pysanka for a single egg) are decorated with traditional Ukrainian folk designs using a wax-resist method. The word pysanka comes from the verb pysaty, "to write", as the designs are not painted on, but written with beeswax. The motifs written on each pysanka carry symbolic meaning; the bird on the cover symbolizes the fulfillment of wishes and fertility. A pysanka with four or more colors represents a family's happiness, prosperity, love, health and achievements.
