Perspective can be defined as a particular attitude toward or way of regarding something, or a point of view. Perspective in graphic arts means linear or point projection. People’s experience influences the perspective of knowledge or space; in a linear-perspective drawing, an object’s dimensions along the line of sight appear shorter than its dimensions from other angles.

We responded to the project, Perspective, by exploring different ways light can serve as a method for producing a 3-dimensional drawing within the dark and empty space of our bin.

The natural light entering the bin from the cracks in the southern wall on sunny days is what we mainly focused on; and introducing artificial light on days where this effect isn’t possible. The rows of transparent vertical linework serve as a medium to catch and carry natural light beams within our bin, regardless of being direct or diffused light coming in from outside, which varies with weather conditions.

The position of the viewer alters the way they are able to see the light on the linework, parts of which become invisible depending on the angle they are being looked at. Even if viewers are not moving, the light changes along with time passes, drawing different perspectives on the medium. This experience shows how different perspectives and points of view can change the way light is seen in the bin.

Fog is introduced in order to create particles that travel up and reveal beams of direct light traveling through the bin, either from the sun’s rays through the cracks, or the projected beam of artificial light that is used to create a similar effect when the weather doesn’t allow for direct sunlight to enter the bin.

The fog and transparent line work create an experience emphasizing the importance of looking at things from different perspectives due to their innate characteristics of invisibility that are changed through the addition of light. These forms of media have allowed us to experiment with and observe the ways we can reveal and conceal the beams of light that are being written within the space.

Our project gives viewers an opportunity to experience light as a form of drawing where the evidence of imagined rays of light becomes a visible reality.

We related this contrast of beams, concealed and revealed beam, in our bin to aspects of The Divided Line metaphor by Socrates. In this metaphor, a figurative line is divided in segments based on the division of the intelligible world and visible world. The intelligible segment is larger and consists of basic thought and understanding of a concept, while the visible segment represents the evidence and further belief of those concepts.

The linework appearing in our bin can apply to this metaphor as the beams connecting the source of light to its ending point within the bin are only imagined to be present until materials are introduced to reveal those beams and make them visibly believable to the viewers as solid lines traveling through space.
