TSONTAKISRCHITECTURE Nick Tsontakis was born at home in Kostadiana, a tiny village located off the northwest coast of Crete. He came into this world in a bedroom with corner windows overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. He grew up gazing at some of the most beautiful vistas on the planet. When his family moved to Montreal, Quebec, Canada, he marveled at the aesthetic magnificence of Old Montreal and the innovative structures and international pavilions of Expo ‘67. Living in Montreal, Nick graduated from McGill University School of Architecture with Distinction, and was the principal of Nick Tsontakis Architects from 1981 to 2001. He moved to Scottsdale and formed Tsontakis Architecture in 1996.

Ryan T. Schmidt is an American Artist from Little Rock, Arkansas sculpting in stainless steel since 2002. After studying Fine Art at the University of Arkansas, he began a career combining water fountains and outdoor sculpture into the landscaped environment. Schmidt works primarily in type 316L non-corrosive stainless steel to create atmospheric sculptures in uid uplifting movement. The sculptures are mirror-polished to capture the changing reeections of the sun, water, clouds, and the seasons invoking the viewer's imagination for inspiration of great healing and thoughtfulness. Schmidt is locally in Arizona and participates yearly at the Celebration of Fine Art in Scottsdale from January through March, and Hidden in the Hills in Cave Creek in November. He’s also been participating at Artprize Grand Rapids in Michigan since 2015, from September until early October. Bloom is a resort-dwelling project located in Cherry Creek, Dewey Arizona inspired by the traditional tipi dwelling forms of the Native American people executed through the incorporation of contemporary architectural concepts and technology. ARA Student Housing Competition With the intent of ensuring efficient usage of materials, fabrication time, and maintenance cost while minimizing the impact on the existing environment, a modular construction method was invented comprised of a flat-pack truss system that can be fanned out from a central pile axis point to form the structure of the dwelling. The structural elements of the dwelling form a central rainwater collection system that aims to harvest and regenerate the scarce water resource of the site.

We’re told to step outside the box. Step outside our comfort zones. Our box is our safe space. We want you to step outside the box and experience nature and its surroundings at the campsite. Each unit is designed to be prefabricated and assembled on-site. Wood panel walls and floors, and steel structures, will form the unit’s en-closure. As you enter the unit, you proceed down an exterior corridor into the sliding glass doors. Each box is elevated on stilts to minimally disturb the rocky mountainside with an exterior patio that hangs over the side. The majority of the unit is made of oak wood and designed to weather over time and naturally blend in with the site.

The Cactus Capsule is centered around an exterior courtyard with four modular modules that are attached to the structure to create a variety of units with the same modules. The modules provide the resort with an economical and efficient solution to the dwellings that sprawl across the property. The modules can be constructed offsite and transported to site for installation, to help reduce the impact of construction on the site and keep the landscape as untouched as possible.

The goal of this design is to be minimally invasive to the ground, bring in the landscape views to the guests, and take on a form that in itself references the hilly landscape. Together these things will provide a faster build and a more relaxing atmosphere to anyone living in it. The sloped roofs serve two purposes both referencing the hilly terrain and providing a good surface to use solar panels.

When designing for a sloping hillside, it is inspiring to recognize the impactful relationship between wall and falling ground. By it’s nature, it is an inclined line, not level. In the right hands, this intersection will be used to express an interlocking anchourage... an embrace between the constructed and the natural. The ragged topographic shape will be emphasised and with any luck, the architecture will defy being ON the site and become OF the landscape.
