“Imagination is more important than knowledge for knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world and all there ever will be to know and understand “

Workplace Environments

Imagination and Research

Philosophy and Concept

No longer can the quality of the office environment be taken for granted. The sophistication of today’s workforce has grown to now understand the values of time, space and interaction. Employees today are selective. They are thoughtful. They have choices.

The advancement of knowledge…. The orderly application of the scientific process. The solution to mankind’s problems…. Never before has the accumulation of knowledge related to our makeup progressed so quickly. With the decoding of the human genome, the advancements in molecular biology and the sheer speed of computer processing has come a rebirth of excitement to the research community. What was veiled by layers of complexity and mystery a short time ago has begun to effectively be uncovered, catalogued and understood. The list of propositions previously assumed impossible has grown short.

The INOVA Rocket

How does ones environment go beyond merely supporting the basic principals of human safety and comfort to further affect the spirit, emotions and creative productivity of people? How can the environment, occupied over eight hours a day, be inviting, safe, pleasing, nurturing and conducive to positive interaction? “I want to be here“. This sense of well-being and satisfaction with ones daily experience can be enhanced by conscious collaborative design. We understand the need to provide alternatives, which support the culture Inova has embraced. We know the value in attracting the best and the brightest and retaining them over time. We offer the tools needed to create the new, improve the existing, and attract the exceptional.

The quality design of research facilities has an impact on your end product, your ability to attract the best and brightest Principal Investigators or visionaries, as well as the quality of life for your management team. No longer can the quality of the research environment be taken for granted. The sophistication of today’s workforce has grown to now understand the values of time, space and interaction.

Philosophy and Concept The quality of the work place can be maximized by employing a thoughtful design solution. The environment can provide enhancements that reflect the mission and culture of Inova. What makes space functional, safe, inviting, and hopefully stimulating to experience? Then, what does this specific site and program require. What will foster creativity, collaboration, efficiency, a sustainable approach to operating cost and minimal impact to the campus’s operations during construction? All are important to the successful development of the new environment. The interior office design should improve the quality of the built environment impacting the users’ daily lives and their work process. The improvement of an individual’s work day can be successful on many levels. The conditions around us influence our attitudes along with our wellbeing. While private offices are still an important part of a

productive workplace environment, an open interactive collection of spaces provides a sense of community and a sense of “team”. The work environment will also offer areas for privacy and concentration. A variation in room scale is needed to accommodate the individual, the community, and the brand. The work environment is broken down into four activity sectors, Core work activity (53% of our day) Collaboration (34% of our day) Socializing (6% of our day) Learning (5% of our day) The “open office” offers many opportunities and a few challenges. Along with the primary observation of distracting noise in today’s open office and research environment, the second most discussed issue is a possible lack of privacy combined with unscheduled interruptions. The average work space has shrunk from 100 square feet, in

the year 2000, to 74 square feet today. This higher density of worker space has taken away some of the person sional privacy, which use to be commonplace. Employee satisfaction fosters a higher level of energy and creativity. The issues which can be associated with open plan offices can be mitigated by providing the appropriate compliment of private huddle areas and conference areas. By providing a shared private “huddle/communication “space, central to the private offices, several things are accomplished. Staff and employees have a private area to have a personal conversation without noise and interruption. A focused project team can meet without disturbing others and individuals can recharge by moving away from their desk for a brief period of time. Space can be located close to the Office Zone and Support Zones to maintain efficiency and the sharing of data and information.

THE INOVA ROCKET Creativity, harnessed by open communication and energetic leadership ignites the imagination. With a common goal, a larger than life achievement can draw a team together in search of the solution.

The facade should be transparent allowing the movement of people to be seen from the outside. The CFB bridge and future pedestrian bridges should express this activity through clear yet energy efficient glass.

What happens between inception and roll out is what separates the good from the exceptional. The Inova Rocket will prepare opportunities for such ventures to dream and deliver.

Buildings should be compact, multi-story, rather than low and spread out, to preserve the natural landscape and buffers. Part of the intrinsic value of this pristine site is its undisturbed terrain and vegetation. This unique setting in Fairfax County brings value to the workplace and its participants.

The workplace environment for such efforts must be flexible and accommodating. It should not be restrictive. It must be flexible translucent and accommodating. The brand should speak for itself. Yes, It is about the past, INOVA’s history, but it is more about the future. The dream, the near horizons and the successes that are soon to be achieved in personal health and the human genome. The environments should support this cutting edge "Brand" and this collection of the best and most accomplished in their fields.

The floor will be comprised of private offices, semi private workstations, and public circulation areas. There will also be conference rooms, and support workrooms. Nourishment/ coffee stations should be provided convenient yet central to encourage interaction among all inhabitants of each floor. This interaction helps reduce isolation among senior staff. It is not only the coffee, that is obtained at these refreshment areas but also the interaction of individuals. It has been established that breaking up ones routine improves productivity. Surrounded by displays of Inova's future goals these offices should offer an overview of the campus. Support staff should be located contiguous to these offices being convenient to the leadership.

Board room New contemporary chairs New lighting New floor finish Offices 150 ft.² Glass should be maximized potential he consider sliding doors to allow offices to open and allow daylight to enter the public corridor.

A communicating stair can be viewed as a downtown intersection or a destination where people cross paths and exchange snippets of information. The stair can be a sculptural element, a focal point. It may also encourage individuals to sit and converse. This has often been done in university settings creating a gathering place for students and professors. A coffee station can be provided near this gathering point to encourage this interaction.

INOVA Founda on & the Future The Foundation display could be located in tower four. The space would be opened and digital displays would be provided to demonstrate the Inova commitment to personalized health and the advancement of healthcare delivery. Views of the entire campus and future development progress can be observed from the “hospitality “ center. Real time web - cameras can be placed throughout the campus to display construction progress.
