ABOUT US We are sisters Kristen and Lindsey Archer. We create handmade wood art, coasters and ornaments using an image transfer process with our original photography and graphic design. We live together, work together and go everywhere together ... which leads to most people having a hard time telling us apart. We’ve always had a very close-knit family, so joining together to launch our own business came about rather naturally. One of the best benefits of our partnership is that our two skill sets — photography and design — compliment each other and allow us to expand our products to include both. Plus, when you’re in business with your sister, it’s pretty easy to tell it like it is.

OUR PROCESS When we started ARCHd, we started with materials we had readily available: wood salvaged from neighborhood curbs and marble tiles from the local discounted overstock store. Our first pieces were cut with borrowed tools from our Dad and old wood from our parents’ demolished deck. While we’ve evolved from shopping our wood from the side of the street ...

each individual piece of ARCHd art is still handmade in Memphis, Tenn. WOOD A RT We start with unfinished wood, cut it to size and sand all sides down to a smooth surface. The sides and back are coated in a red oak stain while the front is painted a satin white. We transfer our original photos and designs to the front surface by hand, using a gel medium. To transfer, images are laser printed on paper. A thin layer of gel medium is painted on the white surface of the wood with the paper

applied directly above, printed side down. Over time, the gel medium absorbs the ink and the paper is rubbed off by hand, leaving the image on the painted surface of the wood. Once the art is transferred, the wood block is lightly sanded along the edges to provide a unique, distressed look, then sealed with a protective clear coat. All wood is branded on the back with our logo and pieces larger than 5” include a hammered sawtooth backer for easy hanging. COASTERS For our marble tile coaster sets, we begin with 4” tiles of smooth, tumbled marble. We transfer our designs directly to the top face of the marble (unpainted) using the same transfer process as the wood. Once transferred, tiles are sealed with a protective clear coat to protect against condensation. The bottom of each tile is stamped with our logo and includes small felt circles in each corner to prevent scratching against furniture and other surfaces. Sets are packaged together in clear/white branded boxes, with room on the back for tagging and pricing.

QUOTES AND DESIGNS The quotes we choose to incorporate into our designs are typically either inspirational or feminist leaning (or often both). Lindsey also keeps a running note on her phone to jot down tidbits from our own conversations, such as this gem that happened in the car on the way home from work one day, while we were discussing our futures ... “I don’t need a significant other; I’m pretty significant all by myself.” Basically, if it’s not something WE would say, it doesn’t go on our art.

READING +WRITING

One day, while exploring our parents’ attic, we came across a vintage Underwood typewriter. It had been discarded in a corner, collecting a few healthy layers of dust. Turns out, that typewriter had belonged to our great-grandfather — Percy Dunville Henry. He used it when starting his own business, back in 1905. We immediately rescued it from the attic and turned it into art, with Kristen photographing it in an alley in downtown, Memphis, Tenn. We‘ve officially claimed it for ourselves, as it is now displayed in our dining room, on our mother’s vintage sewing table (another great discovery from the attic).

After traveling the last few years, we found ourselves with a huge collection of photos we had captured from cities across the country. The Adventure Series was born as a way to create a handmade souvenir from each city ... that would last longer than a shot glass from an airport boutique. We love hearing about why our customers buy a speciďŹ c city — as a remembrance of their own adventure or for a friend starting a new adventure. Our favorite part of this series? We work EVEN CLOSER TOGETHER as we combine photography and design throughout the series. Read on to learn the story behind our adventure in each city.

Atlanta is one of those cities where we’ve often just passed through. This visit, we actually got to stay a while. We rented an Airbnb in the Old Fourth Ward — with an awesome skyline view — and had a few days to just explore. We got up at the crack of dawn for sunrise pictures on our last day. The cold weather that morning made Kristen look about 60% creeper and 40% “guy who illegally records movies in a movie theater.” Anything for a good shot, though, right?

ADVENTURES IN

CHICAGO, ILL. Kristen and her oldest friends took a girls’ trip to Chicago last year. Over the course of 24 hours, she took three boat trips: a river architecture cruise, a lake-front speedboat tour and a private yacht cruise on Lake Michigan. In other words, she photographed Chicago from just about every angle, except the sky.

ADVENTURES IN

NASHVILLE, TENN. Our first art show in Nashville was a legitimate disaster. We had a vendor booth at a two day, OUTDOOR event. First day? The weather was beautiful! Until that night ... when straight line winds ripped through the market and took our tent with them. Literally. We couldn’t find it for a good hour when we showed up the next morning. Luckily, our products are pretty indestructible and we only lost the tent and a partial display. The best part of that morning was watching the makers come together — the Nashville way — to help each other clean up the mess. But, don’t worry! That didn’t scare us away. We did another (successful) outdoor show the next weekend!

ADVENTURES IN

NEW YORK CITY, N.Y. Our favorite NYC adventure was, hands-down, a doors-off helicopter photography tour of Manhattan. Our feet dangled hundreds of feet above skyscrapers while the thought of tumbling to our deaths crossed our minds at LEAST once. New York is already beautiful. From the sky? BREATHTAKING. Although, we underestimated the wind strength of a chopper without its doors. The wind ripped out Kristen’s ponytail holder two minutes into the half hour flight, causing her hair to wrap its way around all kinds of in-flight gadgets (see above). At least it gave her an extra secure connection to the helicopter!

ADVENTURES IN

SAN DIEGO, CALIF. We chased adventure down a cave in San Diego when we visited the Cave Store. We walked all 145 steps down to the mouth of the Sunny Jim Cave. While the view at the bottom was incredible, the walk back up nearly killed us. Did we mention those ONE HUNDRED FORTY-FIVE STEPS??? We couldn’t breathe for a good 5-10 minutes when we made it to the top. We spent the rest of that night sitting on our butts with our friend, Kaitlyn, watching the sunset at Sunset Cliffs.

ADVENTURES IN

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF. San Francisco was the final stop on our sibling tour of the California coast. That’s right, we have a brother (he’s an architect)! While we grew up fighting with each other during every family road trip vacation, we actually get along as adults. Our California tour was the first solo sibling trip we took as grown-ups (sans parents). Definitely the start of a new tradition!

ADVENTURES IN

SEATTLE, WASH. An Adele concert originally took us to Seattle. I mean ... who WOULDN’T travel over 2,000 miles to see Adele belt it out, in person? Money WELL spent. No regrets. For two women obsessed with coffee, the Starbucks Reserve was heaven. Plus all the incredible food and sweeping city views ... it all made us want to stay in Seattle forever. Seattle, we CANNOT wait to visit you again!

ADVENTURES IN

UTAH

Utah was the site of our first attempt at hiking. We thought we came prepared with our camel-back water-filled backpacks, athletic hiking shoes and cameras at the ready. We thought, “yeah, the Delicate Arch is marked as a ‘difficult hike,’ but REALLY ... how hard could it be?” Um ... we got about halfway before we made the decision to head back because it turns out ‘difficult’ actually means REALLY REALLY DIFFICULT. Two words: slick rock. Good thing there were plenty of other ‘beginner’ hikes with great views.

Both of us were born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee. Besides brief stints away for college (Kristen at Middle Tennessee State University and Lindsey at Mississippi State University), we both came HOME to the Bluff City. Our business was also born here. We showed at our first festival here. We sold our first piece of art here. Memphis is our home. The past couple of years, we have seen so much growth in both the city and ourselves. We’ve built meaningful relationships with other makers and businesses here in the 901 and can’t wait to continue to build our business in Memphis. We’re lucky it’s so beautiful and photogenic.
