SEPTEMBER 2017 Students go on Ghana service and immersion trip Eleven Hoban students, led by Father Mike Ausperk and Mr. Jason Dzik, went on a service and immersion experience in Ghana from Aug. 12-22. While in West Africa, the group helped with landscaping and other finishing touches at the new Saint Brother André High School, opening in September to 10th graders. The new school is a ministry of the Midwest Province of the Brothers of Holy Cross. The group toured Ghanaian cultural sites and experienced local customs. The students were Gracie Bagdon, Michael Davies, Emily Day, Delaney Erks, John Frola, Mary Gutbrod, Elizabeth Hillegas, Claire Penney, Alison Ritenour, Megan Sutterluety and Wendy Weng. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has announced that six seniors from Hoban—Luke Armao, Jack Bahmer, Joshua Parisi, Michael Rinaldi, Alison Ritenour and Victor Vogt—have been named semifinalists in the scholarship

competition based on the scores they earned on the PSAT they took as juniors. Commended students will be announced later this month. For more information on the program, click HERE.

Hoban welcomes new board chairman and members Ted Stitzel has been elected Hoban's chairman of the board of directors. He succeeds longtime chairman William A. Scala '71.

Stitzel has been a member of the board since 2014, and is also the father of four Hoban graduates and two current students.

New members of the board are Dr. Joseph Congeni and James McCool.

Hoban inducts five to Athletic Hall of Fame

Five people were inducted into the Hoban Athletic Hall of Fame, Class of 2017. The inductees were announced during the Cardinal Mooney football game Sept. 1 as part of the Come Home to Hoban Reunion Weekend. The formal ceremony took place on Sunday, Sept. 3, at Guy's Party Centre. New members are: Mike Urbano '62, Richard Maher '68, Angela Lockhart Watson '96, Tenishia Benson '07 and Coach Ralph Orsini. 41 from Hoban recognized for performance on AP exams The College Board has recognized 41 Hoban students as AP Scholars based on their scores on the 2017 Advanced Placement exams. Of these, nine were designated AP Scholars with Honor and seven were named AP Scholars with Distinction. The average score for the 41 Hoban Scholars on all tests was 3.99. Class of ’67 unearths time capsule after 50 years On July 28 , members of the Class of 1967 dug up the time capsule that was buried 50 years ago when the concrete HOBAN letters facing I-76 were constructed.

The group was assisted by Brian Stanley ‘87 of B&C Landscaping. The materials buried in the cylinder were in pristine condition, possibly because they were protected by a whole lot of concrete! The materials unearthed are now in the advancement conference room. Photos and videos can be found HERE.

Faculty members learn about Holy Cross at Notre Dame Brother Robert Livernois, Hoban’s vice president for mission and leadership, brought four religious studies teachers to tour the Notre Dame area in Indiana Aug. 89 . The priests, brothers and sisters of Holy Cross have headquarters there. The group stayed at Columba Hall, the brothers’ residence on the Notre Dame campus.

Hoban salutes elementary schools for preparing students Hoban salutes the success of the members of the Class of 2017 as they advance to the next stage of their lives.

This success is due in large measure to the elementary schools these graduates attended. We thank the pastoral staff, faculty and staff of these schools for preparing these young men and women to accept the challenges of high school. For links to the parish posters, click HERE.

Hoban welcomes students at first day assembly at Dowed Field The new school year started off with a fun assembly at Dowed Field on Monday, Aug 28. Activities included a hot dog lunch, the steel drum band, cheerleaders, dance team, games and cheers for all. Father Mike Ausperk started the assembly off with an opening prayer, Dr. Sweda welcomed everyone back from summer break and Ms. Hanson introduced new faculty and staff members.

Brother Bob announced the Holy Cross Core Value theme for the year which is Integrity.

New director of admissions named Julie Stieber has accepted the position of director of admissions effective Aug. 1 . Stieber served as assistant director of admissions for both Baldwin-Wallace College and Kent State University. She most recently served as the head of school at Canton Montessori School. She is a Leadership Stark County graduate and twice received Kent State University’s Total Quality Service Award.

Stieber is the mother of Ted (Class of 2015) and Ellie (Class of 2017) and served as a parent ambassador for Hoban’s admissions office.

New students welcomed to Hoban family The start of a new school year began Aug. 25 for freshmen and transfer students. The new students were welcomed by faculty, staff and other Hoban students as they arrived on campus. They listened to presentations, enjoyed a free boxed lunch, ran through a shortened version of their class schedule and ended the day with a rally in Barry Gym. Classes begin for everyone on Monday, Aug. 28.

Rossi completes work on master’s degree in theology Over the last six summers, religion teacher Ben Rossi has been working on a master's degree in theology at the University of Notre Dame. On July 27 there was a Mass for those in the program to celebrate the conclusion of their coursework and comprehensive exams. WAKR names senior Dylan Erks athlete of the week Senior Dylan Erks is the 1590 WAKR Male StudentAthlete of the Week for the week of Sept. 7-14 . Erks is a standout golfer for the Knights under coach Quinn Parker. In the spring, he pitches for the Hoban baseball team. He is a peer mentor and a member of the gourmet food club. He plans to go into construction management, He told the station that he enjoys horror movies and latestart Thursdays. Listen to the full on-air interview HERE.

Writing lab to prepare students for challenges of college writing New to Hoban for the 2017-18 school year, the writing lab in room 22 is founded and directed by Brother Philip Smith.

Each day before and after school and each period of the day, students have access to peer and professional writing mentors. All mentors spent a half day during the summer in training with Brother Philip. For a complete description, click HERE.
