In the outskirts of Milan, at the exit of the Porto di Mare stop, almost 40000 sqm of area are dedicated for an acquatic park. Our main concept for the wave swimming center masterplan was to integrate the urban fabric between the city and the country, creation of clear pedestiran and vehicular axis to define the identity of the site, consolidation of similar functions to create efficient circulation and balancing the built open relationship. For the swimming centre itself we wanted to create a typology which was rural and urban at the same time. The response in form was to have a series of undulating roofs which allow energy production through solar cells, diffused natural lighting, allow the recycling of rainwater, interactive public spaces, optimum building ventilation and green roofs. The functions are spread over two floors. The functions on the ground floor consist of two entrance lobbies, one main indoor olympic sized pool and diving pool, one training pool and diving pool, one outdoor pool, offices, athlete changing rooms, recreational spaces, service areas and storage rooms. The first floor has the seating
as well as some recreational spaces. The structural system consists of a raft slab interconnecting the three arches to sustain horizontal forces while pile foundations carry the vertical forces. There are 12 repetitions of the concrete arch with a spacing of 10m, joined together by IPE sections, and covered with an insulated zinc metal roof cladding. The technical system consists of serice areas on the ground floor as well as the first floor, with the plant room and service room on the ground floor. The AHU units are placed on the first floor. Each pool has its balancing tank and pump. There are two entrances to the buidling one for the general public and the other for the athletes. The public lobby leads to an entrance staircase and lift to the first floor for the spectators to access the seating. All along the seating length are fire escape staircases.
