he seed for all this dates back at least to 2006, during the Diamond Jubilee of the institution to which we first met you, the University of the East. Back then, especially during the Foundation Day on that September 25th, we recognized the 60 Most Outstanding UE Alumni in a gala ceremony that pushed through despite inclement weather. The following night, we recognized nearly 300 others as Distinguished UE Alumni Achievers. Yes, it was a celebration of the bounty of accomplished men and women who had most or part or their entire education at UE—and given your millions of alumni, this was actually just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. But it was also our way of saluting you for nurturing us immeasurably, through the leaders, mentors and workers in your service through the years, and helping us to turn us into the accomplished individuals that we had become. Then one day, one of your fiercely loyal, bigthinking graduates, Dr. Jess Tanchanco Sr., came up with the idea of holding an alumni reunion to top all alumni reunions ever: a global one. That is, an alumni homecoming featuring your graduates—as well as former administrators, professors and personnel—who are now scattered throughout the world, flying in from all over for what would be an internationally flavored shebang under one roof. Given that, aside from the Philippines, a good majority of your graduates and former students are based in the USA, and that North America was undergoing an economic hemorrhage that could use a boost via an influx of tourism, Dr. Tanchanco proposed that it be held in the States.

On that note, he broached the idea to the University of the East Association of America in April 2009, with the pitch that this unprecedented event—so unprecedented that, to our knowledge, no other Philippine university has ever done it before—be held in the US. With one of your highly successful graduates now thriving in America, Los Angeles-based Mr. Oscar Jornacion, leading the way with his no-guts-no-glory spirit, the plan was set and the complicated work on both Pinoy shores and American soil was underway. The event was to be held at a four-day stretch during the first weekend of June—just before classes would start in UE and just as summer was starting across the Pacific Ocean. And it would be held in one of the most cosmopolitan, glittery and party-friendly cities in all of America: Las Vegas in Nevada. Of course, this, the 1st UE Global Alumni Reunion—and it is the first, for we intend to keep having more of this, in your honor— would be marked by recollection, nostalgia, celebration, camaraderie and all the other big words attendant to alumni gatherings, though this time exponentially more so. More important, this huge event is also a tribute to you, our dear Alma Mater, and a solid acknowledgment of your soundness as an institution. This is likewise our way of demonstrating wholehearted support and eternal love for you—grateful as we are for paving the way to what is now our bright future turned radiant present, with a prayer for your continued power and success at proving to one and all that Tomorrow Begins in the East!

There was the fiery businesswoman Elena Lim, Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim, Senator Robert Jaworski, former NFA Administrator Jesus Tanchanco, The Weekly Dawn adviser Raul Gonzalez, student leaders Joel Umandap and Merci Ferrer, Justice Dante Tinga, Megaworld Chairman Andrew Tan, former SSS chief Corazon De La PazBernardo, former BIR official Forting Aguas and others who responded to the clarion call for UE graduates, warriors all, in their chosen professions, to unite for the school. Classmates renewed their ties, and sorority sisters and fraternity brothers rekindled the memories of their stay in the University. Each had their moments among the gathered UE guests who went all out for the kickoff ceremonies that were actually just the beginning of things to come. The guests, clad in red, went redder into the night, imbued with a new sense of purpose for the school that provided them the education necessary for their enduring successes in their respective lives. It was their night and one of red.

Why Vegas? T

hanks to the 1st UE Alumni Global Reunion, UE went to LV. So it goes that Las Vegas, the most populated city in the State of Nevada and one of the USA’s most populated and vibrant cities—and self-proclaimed Entertainment Capital of the World—became, for one long weekend in June 2010, the place to be for UE alumni from all over the world. And what a fascinating convergence point it is. Las Vegas sits within the Mojave Desert, and we were there at the onset of summer heat. But you wouldn’t know it was an arid place judging from its towering, diverse infrastructure and dazzling, glitzy nightlife. For good measure, air-conditioning would be blasting anywhere indoors, from restaurants to residences. And the sun would set past 7 pm, a far cry from the

Philippines’ 6 pm sundowns—and which should explain why many party people and recreational places across the city stay up late, if not all night. (What’s in a name? The land that would become a big and busy city was named Las Vegas—“the meadows” in Spanish—by visiting Spaniards in the 19th century, in reference to reportedly extensive green areas in the place then.) For several of us, it would be our first time to go to the USA, maybe even anywhere outside PHL. (Our trips out of PHL were mainly via Philippine Airlines, which provided airfare discounts. Thanks, PAL.) And what a way to get happily culture-shocked than in Las Vegas, where there are round-the-clock casinos pretty much everywhere indoors, even some slot machines at the passenger lounge of the McCarran International Airport! Browsing the many complimentary magazines and booklets about the city’s attractions and shows alone can induce merry dizziness. Indeed, even if you’ve been here before, you will never get enough of LV.

Why Not? The city’s attractions as a whole, especially in the central, uptown area known as the Strip, are like the world in a nutshell. Over there, the Venetian, which replicates the picturesque arteries of Venice, Italy. Over here, the Paris Las Vegas, a hotel that claims to offer the “Eiffel Tower Experience.” Down there is Chinatown. Up there is the Luxor, whose exterior mimics the Sphinx and the pyramids of Egypt. Other dazzlers include the Bellagio, with its world-famous dancing fountains, and the shimmering, golden Mandalay Bay, aka the home away from home of Pinoy icon Manny Pacquiao, himself a world-famous boxer. Even a few North American states are geographically represented in Vegas, as witness the New York, New York hotel, the Hawaiian Marketplace, and The Orleans Hotel and Casino—the latter a quaint refuge for those seeking the razzle-dazzle vibe of New Orleans and, from June 3 to 6, 2011, the official residence and main venue of the 1st UE Alumni Global Reunion. Las Vegas is likewise a melting pot of nationalities, and the population is said to include at least seven Asian races. Coincidentally, the majority of Asians in LV are……Filipinos! (In addition, Angeles City of Pampanga is a sister city of LV’s.)

Given the many gratifications it has to offer, from gambling to shopping and practically anything else in between, Las Vegas has also had a reputation as a haven for decadence. Yet, at The Orleans, as with just about any hotel we’ve ever been in, there is a copy of the Holy Bible in each room. So much for “Sin City”! Las Vegas: a city of opulence, a city of endless enjoyment, a city of possibilities. A perfect spot for realizing what had been thought impossible: a grand get-together by UE alumni from all over the world!

fter much frenzied preparation, this grand reunion finally began! This day in particular served as a warm-up of sorts, as it saw the registration of the already-present alumni attendees from all over the USA, from the Philippines and elsewhere in Asia, from Canada and other spots in the world. In the process, these early birds got to network with one another, chatting about everything from the rigorous flight coming in, the duration of their entire trip away from home to the expiry date of their freshly earned US visa and, more important, trading memories and viewpoints about UE or having been students of it, and their resulting professions post-college. As the sun set, the videoke machine was fired upâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;for what is a Pinoy gathering without warbling with abandon? The floor was likewise cleared for some line dancing led by UE graduate turned CPA Roland Ditanâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;a sort of warmup, again, for the next two nights.

After rise-andshine, it was bowling time, and over 100 ardent ten-pin fans had a blast bowling away with alumni they have long known or never met before. (The tourney’s winners are listed below.) In the afternoon, it was shopping time, Vegas fashion outlets style, with transportation via a long but fairly quick bus trip. Others opted to be in mini-reunions held by some of the alumni groups—college chapters, fraternities, sororities, et al.—within The Orleans.

hings got really cooking at the Welcome Night, revved up as the attendees were by both the sumptuous buffet delights and the joy of each other’s colorful company. It was truly gratifying to see and hear generations of UE alumni (and their loved ones) in the thick of hearty eating, lively chatting and engrossing reminiscing. The photos here are just a sampling of that delightful evening—a time when the organizers must have looked around with awe and thought, “Wow. This is really happening!”

ello! I’m here after a very, very, very long journey from my home country of Ireland to here. Hello! I arrived this afternoon. My friends and I went to a Chinese restaurant for a meal, and they give you a thing called a fortune cookie. So I opened this fortune cookie; there’s a piece of paper inside that said: Today’s lucky numbers are 16, 19, 30, 41, 44 and 50. When I turned it over, it said, “People are naturally attracted to you.” This is not a formal, solemn prayer; more of a sharing prayer. I’m not a graduate of UE, but I’ve been there in the last century and this century as chaplain. Now in different cultures there are different ways of relating to one another. For example, I was in Chile for many years, and when I meet someone in the morning they say, “Como amanecio,” which means, “How did you wake up?” And some people in Africa would say as a greeting, “Oh! I see you” and the reply is; “I see you too.” What about in the Philippines, what do they say to one another? You know, they say to me: “Did you eat already?” Eating is not just a physical thing. Usually, it’s a way of relating, of being a community, of sharing—sharing stories, sharing of yourself. Sharing is important. Jesus had many forms of eating with other people. Remember the Last Supper with the Apostles, and other times, even with the enemies. Because he was a human sharing the experience of community. And this banquet is not just enjoying food but about sharing community. You know each other, or many of you know each other… to share, to relate, to be who you really are. Each one of you is special and unique, but that uniqueness and specialness has to be shown to others. And having a meal together is one of the best ways doing it. Gets n’yo? So I pray: Bless us, o Lord, and bless this food. Bless those who have prepared it, we who shall eat it and your compassion to take care of those who are hungry. We ask this in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

elcome to all of you to the first ever Global Reunion of the University of the East. It was about a year ago from today that the University of the East Association of America accepted the responsibility for hosting the first ever Global Reunion. Since then, we’ve struggled, persevered and committed ourselves to the fulfillment of this objective. Today we are seeing the conclusion of that commitment. To this I am forever indebted to the core group of individuals, both here and in the Philippines, who gave their time and effort to the fulfillment of this event. So now, we have planted the seed. I now challenge you to keep it going for the benefit of our Alma Mater. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the first ever Global Reunion of the University of the East!

o all our guests, friends, ladies and gentlemen, good evening. First of all, I would like to congratulate the UE Association of America for spearheading this occasion. Congratulations to the officers of the UE Association of America! Let’s give them a big round of applause. Also, may I request all the members of the Philippine delegation, please rise to be recognized. When Oscar came to Manila, to announce the plan to organize the first Global Reunion, Jess Tanchanco made me Chairman of the Philippine delegation and we accepted the challenge—and here we are. I think we have not failed the UE Association of America. So to my committee members, thank you for your cooperation. Congratulations! I would like to tell each and everyone that I am a proud graduate of the University of the East. I am proud to say that I am from UE. Although it’s sad to say that there are some successful graduates from UE, that after graduating, they disclaim our Alma Mater. Boo. So with that, I would again like to thank you for coming tonight and, hopefully, the next global reunion will be much bigger than tonight’s affair. Maraming, maraming salamat po!

abuhay ang UE Alumni! It is a glorious night tonight, because we have here assembled the most successful UE alumni, the sons and daughters of Lualhati. Well, I’m very happy to be here. Alam n’yo, when I suggested this last year, I was here and I had a meeting with the UE Association of America- with Jun Capistrano, Oscar Jornacion, Anita Domingo, si Jun Pinlac, they were the ones here. They asked me what project they could go into so, innocently I said “Magglobal reunion tayo, dahil masama ang economy ng America. Let us help America and hold the reunion dito sa America para gumanda ang economy. Eh, sineryoso pala nila. So now, we are all here, gathered for the first global reunion in the United States, in Las Vegas. And because of President Garcia’s support, we are publicizing this in the Philippines. May fullpage ads tayo… ’yung Global Reunion. ’Yung ibang mga eskuwelahan, nagpaplano na ring magka-global reunion dito sa America. Mabuhay ang UE Alumni! Alam n’yo kanina, sinalubong ako ni Jun Pinlac. “Yung speech mo kailangan three minutes lang.” Eh one hour na ito, hindi ko na lang babasahin. Kasi maganda ’yung sayaw, pinaghandaan. Pero I just want you to know that UE is making waves all over the world. UE is not only competing in the Philippines. Dati-rati we are only competing in the Philippines, now we are competing in the global arena. So we are no longer competing with Ateneo, UP… We are now competing with Oxford University, UCLA,

Harvard… Marami dito, si Efren Abratique, engineer, tinalo n’ya mga Ivy League sa LA. He became the LA Building Commissioner. O, naiwanan mo yung mga ivy league graduates, ano? Then itong si Judge Recaña, we are very proud that he is the first Filipino to be appointed in the federal court in LA. Talo mo hindi lang ’yung mga Ateneo at UP, natalo. Pero natalo mo ang graduates ng Ivy League. So UE is growing fast. And not only here, UE engineers are very much in demand in the Middle East. Hindi pa natatapos sa UE, kinukuha na sa Middle East. And I want you to know that next to the Philippine Military Academy, UE has produced the most number of generals and colonels in the Armed Forces of the Philippines, and to show you, nandito ang UE Knights. May I ask the UE Knights to stand up, please. Headed by General Yoro, General Vergel, andiyan si Colonel Gasmin, General Atanacio; UE has produced 36 generals. Kasama pati commodores sa Philippine Navy, Air Force, all the Armed Forces branches, may mga generals tayo. In all government offices, you will find UE. Sa Bureau of Internal Revenue, siguro kalahati ng mga examiners du’n ay graduate ng UE, mga CPAs. Sa Commission on Audit, almost 1,000 auditors ay puro UE. And of course, I want you to know, we have the Vice President, Noli De Castro. We have also produced more than a dozen Cabinet members from the time of President Diosdado Macapagal up to the time of Gloria, we have more than 12 cabinet members. And in Congress, marami tayong alumni. Sa mga governors,

Governor Maliksi of Cavite, we have a dozen governors all over the country. And mayors, by the hundreds, mayors all over the country, including Mayor Hagedorn of Puerto Princesa. And of course our outstanding government official, that we’re very proud of: Cora dela Paz-Bernardo, the most admired president of SSS. Alam n’yo, ininterview siya sa television, sinabi sa kanya: “Ano’ng tingin mo sa successor mo sa SSS, si Prof. Neri?” Sabi niya “Magaling naman yan, kasi graduate ’yan Magna Cum Laude ng UP. Eh ako, Magna Cum Laude rin pero UE lang ako.” Pero sinundan niya: “University of Excellence.” Now at the College of Law, we have already produced two justices in the Supreme Court. We have Dante Tinga, the first UE alumnus to be appointed sa Supreme Court. By the way Dante Tinga writes the best legal decisions sa Supreme Court. Magaling sumulat. Laging napagkakamalang taga-UP. Sabi niya “Di bale nang mapagkamalang taga UE, magaling namang school ang UP.” Si Bersamin is the next one to be appointed recently sa Supreme Court. College of Dentistry, andito ba ang mga Dentist? Our College of Dentistry is number one in the country. Every passing exam, they get most of the time 100% passing average. I want you to know that UE… in the

last 60 years, we have produced the biggest number of topnotchers in various disciplines. We have produced almost 2,000 topnotchers. Now that is a record I would like to challenge other schools to top. And I would like to give recognition, a toast to President Garcia that succeeded in making UE among the first autonomous universities in the Philippines. Autonomous means that we will be less controlled by CHED. We can now extend the school, put up branches in other parts of the country. Before I end, I just want to present to you: there is an element in the University, a group that is known from Aparri to Jolo, this group is so well-known. Mas kilala sila kesa sa UE, pero UE sila… and I refer to the UE Red Warriors. Nandito po ang UE Red Warriors. Nagte-training sa Abunazzar Impact Basketball Camp. Last year, dinala po natin sila diyan with the support of the University, and they became Champion in Las Vegas last year in the Easter Showcase Basketball Tournament. Tinalo natin ang 10 American teams, tayo nag-Champion dito sa Las Vegas. And we almost became Champion of the UAAP, but that’s another story. Thank you and mabuhay ang UE alumni!

ood evening, UE alumni! It is such a distinct pleasure and a great privilege to be here to address all of you. I thank every one of you who have made it to this landmark gathering, and I congratulate each and everyone involved in putting together this very big event. When Jess Tanchanco told me about this, I said, Good luck! But it looks like he does have good luck. Of course I’d like to thank also Mr. Oscar Jornacion, Mr. Jun Santos and Mr. Cezar Quiambao and of course, all the others who helped Jess Tanchanco put this together. And I know that this is just the beginning. Firstly, though, I should clarify that I am not a UE alumna. I wish I were. However, I am no stranger to UE nor am I a stranger to UE alumni. As someone who has spent a decade or so in the Philippine academic realm via the Commission on Higher Education or CHED as Chairman, I am well aware of UE and its remarkable legacy. And as someone who has been a part of UE itself for the last four years, I am even more aware of the University and some of its numerous, productive alumni, who are spread out not just throughout the Philippines but also all over the world. And you are proof of that. Just this evening, I met some of you from Canada, from Australia and of course, from the Philippines and the US. And because I have served the University of the East, o ang Pamantasan ng Silangan, for the same number of years that it takes to earn a basic college degree, I think I should now be considered a UE alumna, don’t you think? Seriously, I find myself fortunate not just to be a part of the University of the East but also to have been able to meet some of its illustrious alumni. In fact, here is an interesting coincidence: My UE stint so far has been book-ended by dazzling, alumni-studded events. These are the University’s Diamond Jubilee in September 2006, when Lualhati proudly honored her 60 Most Outstanding Alumni and conferred recognition upon hundreds of her Distinguished Alumni Achievers in various fields of endeavor; and now, in June 2010, with this first-ever UE Alumni Global Reunion! I was reminded just this morning that UE is the first one… the first one in the Philippines to have a Global Reunion. From what I understand, the other universities are now planning their own. Naiinggit na sa inyo. Having been in UE likewise means that I have

worked or have been working with a good number of UE alumni. Foremost of these is one of UE’s greatest graduates: the late Chairman and CEO, Dr. P. O. Domingo. It may have been two years now since he passed on, yet Dr. Domingo’s passion for service for Lualhati remains an inspiration to all of us in the UE community. He was the one who asked me to join UE in late 2005, and I said, But you are choosing a UP graduate when there are so many UE graduates who could become president, and in fact I gave him some names. And he said, I’ve already talked to them. That’s why I ended up with you because no UE Alumni could accept the position. Mababa raw masyado ang suweldo. There are a few people in the UE Board of Trustees who are accomplished alumni. These are Executive Vice President, Treasurer and Chief Administrative Officer Carmelita Mateo, who had also been with the Philippine National Bank or PNB. She’s not here tonight because she’s the one doing my job back home; Mrs. Corazon De La Paz-Bernardo, who is better known as the former President and CEO of the Social Security System or SSS; and Mr. Wilson Young, who is currently the Chief Operating Officer of Tanduay Distillers Inc. and the Vice Chairman of the UE Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center Inc. or UERM. I am also a member of the Board of Trustees of UERM. There are many others that I can mention, but let me cite just two more alumni whom I have worked with at UE. Recently, UE’s Manila Campus had, as its Chancellor, Mrs. Antonieta Fortuna-Ibe, who has had an exceptional career as a CPA, including her stint as Partner of SGV & Co., and was the Chairperson of the Professional Regulation Commission, when I met her for the first time. And for the last few years, there is the one and only Dr. Jesus Tanchanco Sr., the Executive Director of the Marketing Department—the man who has championed UE alumni all his life and more so for the last few years that he has been back at his Alma Mater. Jess is also one of the key people behind this very event that has now gathered all of us together. Some of my friends comment that ever since I started in UE, they think that UE has become more famous all over the country because of the ads and articles in newspapers and tarpaulins all over Manila. It just to happened that Jess and I started in UE more or less at the same time. They credit me when in fact it

is Jess Tanchanco who did all that. Indeed, I can attest that UE alumni are synonymous with greatness, achievement, leadership, enthusiasm, perseverance and excellence. Yet some might say that I am merely being obsequious, flattering or, in Tagalog, sipsip. Yet I have been a witness to the many wonders and feats that UE alumni can achieve—either as individuals, in groups or as a whole—so I am merely speaking the truth. UE is a great institution precisely because it molded all of you from youthful innocents into accomplished professionals, from would-be achievers into exceptional performers. In a manner of speaking, you are not just role models for the present and future generations of UE students; moreover, you are UE’s torchbearers. The Lualhati statue may not be everywhere, yet you are all Lualhati’s representatives everywhere you go, the living embodiments of her mission and vision, her goals and objectives, her ideals and aspirations. As you may all know, UE’s history is a rich one, filled with ups and downs, highs and lows, dramas and hurrahs. In the late ’40s to the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s, the University was marked by unprecedented growth and astonishing results in the different licensure board examinations. When I was new, I asked Office of Research Coordination Director Olivia Caoili to write an article summarizing UE’s achievements; this

is now published… The ’80s generally saw a steep decline that put UE on the verge of extinction. The ’90s witnessed the University’s marvelous resurgence, proving its naysayers wrong. And the 2000s have seen a red-and-white UE successfully make its way into greater public consciousness. Generally speaking, your University has grown by leaps and bounds and is institutionally sound—and I am proud to have been involved in some of its recent milestones, including the granting by CHED of the much-coveted Autonomous Status for UE Manila. Let me give you an idea what it means. In the past, only UP was Autonomous, and it was a public university, that’s why it’s autonomous. For a private institution to become autonomous, you have to be accredited many times over. But of course, the story of UE has not concluded. I, for one, am genuinely looking forward to even greater things for the University in the near and distant future. With the help and support of UE alumni such as yourselves, UE’s story will never end, and will be marked by even more strides and triumphs. Through you, men and women who are Lualhati’s eternal sons and daughters, UE’s legacy can and will endure and be everlasting. Through you, UE alumni, the University of the East can achieve even more and can all the more prove to the world that Tomorrow Begins in the East. Mabuhay ang mga UE alumni!

evelry raised to the third power: that’s Day 3 in a nutshell. The morning was a delight for golf lovers, who putted away ’til early afternoon. (The tournament’s winners are listed below; the golfing photos here are courtesy of Mr. Santos Capistrano Jr.) As the sun went down, the festivities got headier and glitzier via the gala night, with hundreds of alumni and their companions coming out dressed to the nines—as sparkling as the night sky’s own stars. This was the Global Reunion in full bloom—from the full meal via the sit-down dinner to the full program brimming with vigorous dancing, vital awards, significant speeches, more dancing, exciting raffling and more dancing. The merriment, the elation, the camaraderie and the fondness for Lualhati were in the air, on our faces and in our hearts. The day’s conclusion was unmistakable: The 1st UE Alumni Global Reunion was a runaway success.

ne year ago when Mr. Tanchanco mentioned about the global reunion, I accepted the task of being the overall chairman. And when my wife learned about it, she said, “Are you crazy?!” I said maybe not, but I accepted this big task because I love UE and I want to do something for UE. And the second reason is because of the challenge I would not have accepted it if it was not challenging. I put up at least 12 companies in the last 30 years because of the challenges of putting up companies. I will make my speech short because I want you to dance all night. I would just take this opportunity to thank the different groups that helped me put up this global reunion. I would like to acknowledge Jun Capistrano, the President of UEAA. Over the year he has become my close friend and my partner in this endeavor. I would like to thank the members of the UE core group. There are 25 of us—different personalities, very challenging personalities, but I guess, we made it. I would also like to thank my cheering squads. I have a CPA group in here. Where are you? I also have an ALSG Group. And of course my fraternity/sorority Bear Geraldez. Let us give them a big hand. And we have PICPA. And a lot of different groups including the Zeta Rho fraternity, the Phi Omega fraternity, and guess what? I have my friends from La Union! And also, I would like to recognize the mayor of San

Fernando, La Union, Mayor Pablo Ortega. I met him several times in La Union, but I didn’t know he was from UE too, like me. I would also like to take this opportunity to talk about Andrew Tan. Andrew Tan is the head of Megaworld Corporation. He was supposed to be awarded Most Outstanding Alumnus of UE tonight but he declined and said just say a few words about your brad. He’s my brother in the fraternity. He was my classmate. A lot of people don’t know that the fourth richest Filipino in the Philippines is a UE alumnus, Andrew Tan. Megaworld has been supporting the activities of the UE Association of America. Let me tell you a few words about him. We used to share sandwiches when we were in College. We could not afford a whole sandwich. Andrew was poor, like me. He was very ambitious and went on to put up Megaworld Corporation. His projects are Eastwood City, Newport City, McKinley Hill and a lot of projects in the Philippines. And let us support our major sponsors because they paid a lot of money for our activities and including my friend, Nelson Terrible. He’s a developer and he’s also an achiever and also he’s a major sponsor. Lucio Tan also. And last but not the least, I would like to thank Awee Abayari for accepting to be our emcee. She is the Executive Vice President of my Trimedia Group of Companies. And also, I’d like to thank my wife for being supportive. Thank you and have a nice time!

ack home in the Philippines, UE—in its marketing strategy—uses the phrase “UE No. 1!” And we strive to live up to that claim—and the latest proof is this first ever Global Reunion here in Las Vegas, USA. There is no doubt that other schools’ alumni associations back home will follow suit. They will duplicate what we at UE have started. But the point is, we did it first, and nothing beats the original. We feel grateful to the UE Alumni Association of America for initiating this gargantuan task. We in the Philippines took up the challenge—that is, to bring a great number of Philippines-based alumni and friends to this first ever global reunion. From day one of this undertaking in the Philippines, the road to Las Vegas was never smooth and easy. But no regrets; although there were some ummms and ohhhs along the way, all in all it was a triumph and a success. Proof of this is your presence here which affirms that UE alumni, wherever they are, will rally together at any designated peace anywhere in the world so they can show their love and commitment to our Alma Mater, the University of the East.

Let me take this opportunity to thank some people: Oscar and Gilda Jornacion, Victor and Marissa Sy, Jun Capistrano, and the rest of their group. We appreciate your generosity and hospitality, and your giving us the opportunity to showcase the strength of the Philippinebased alumni. And of course, for their support, to my secretariat—Josie Malanum, Maline Zamudio, Joymely Cua, Jojo Rubio, Meanne Mercado, Joseph Mercado, Edith Romero and the rest of my friends who brought with them huge balikbayan boxes containing the trophies and coffeetable books and other materials and souvenirs, so you can feel and have a taste of what we have in the Philippines: Thank you so much, for being with me every step of the way. We did good and we made an impressive impact on this affair. And to Cezar Quiambao, thank you very much. To all of us making this Global Reunion an affair to remember, the night is still young. riends, ladies and gentlemen. Allow me to convey the personal greetings of our Chairman Dr. Lucio C. Tan to all the UE alumni who have converged here in Las Vegas for the first UE Global Reunion. Mr. Tan would have loved to join us, but he has to be in Manila to celebrate his golden wedding anniversary today. Without further ado, allow me to read the text of Dr. Tan’s message: Greetings and congratulations to all the UE alumni for this first-ever UE Global Reunion. I wish to thank all of you for ensuring that the bond among UE graduates remains strong. I’m happy and proud that years after finishing your studies and earning your diploma, the ties that bind you with the University have not been broken. Actually, when I first heard about this reunion, I never imagined it was possible to gather UE graduates

under one roof, and in a foreign land at that. The event’s name itself—global reunion—goes beyond the traditional grand homecomings we regularly stage in the Philippines. But true to the passion of UE alumni, nothing is impossible if you put your heart into it. Here you are, successfully holding a reunion that brought together graduates of the University from different parts of the globe. Your presence here reaffirms the vision of the University’s Alumni Association to foster close ties among the graduates and promote a brotherhood that is based on mutual benefit and support. I believe some of you are now based here in the United States, or work somewhere in the Middle East, Europe or in some other countries where Filipino workers are known by the acronym OFWs. I’m glad you were able to make it here and bond with your former schoolmates. The life of an OFW, as

we all know, is not easy and the next three days of fun and laughter this affair offers would hopefully be more than enough to relieve the pressure of working abroad. Of course, we also have here the UE alumni from the Philippines who flew thousands of miles just for this occasion. I dare not ask if you miss Manila. The memories of the CM Recto, Caloocan, UERM campuses, I’m certain, remain vivid in your minds: the happy faces you wore when the UE Red Warriors emerged victorious in the UAAP; and who can forget the chorus of “No classes” whenever our team wins the UAAP title? Or the pride one felt when graduates from our Alma Mater figure prominently in the board exams? As the adage goes, ‘there’s no place like home.’ Find time to visit our country and always be proud of your land of birth just as you are proud of your University. This event promises to be fun-filled and unforgettable. This is one event that I find compelling because of the excitement it brings to participants. For instance, it gives professors an opportunity to know what happened to their students years after graduation. In the same vein, reunions give a glimpse of how far one’s contemporaries have gone up the corporate ladder.

At this point, allow me to take this occasion to make a very important announcement that I’m sure will change the course of UE’s history. For the first time, I’m making public my plan to convert UE and UERM into a full-fledged foundation. This is in keeping with my vision of providing quality education, especially for the Filipino masses. In the next few months, I will set this plan into motion. And to ensure that UE will be a truly global university, I am also planning to create a special Board of Advisers composed of global Filipinos like you. I hope to hear from no less than the best and the brightest UE graduates who, I hope, would selflessly share their knowledge, expertise and resources in making sure that our dream for UE will come to fruition. Once this Board of Advisers is created, I will call regular meetings to seek advice and guidance from our global “consultants” on how best to proceed with UE’s conversion into a truly global institution. You will hear more about this plan in the coming days. On this note, allow me to thank you once more for keeping your faith in UE and for showing to us—the faculty, the administrative and executive officers—that your loyalty with the University of the East did not end on Graduation Day. apping this unprecedented UE alumni affair was an exhibition game that pitted the UE Red Warriors Men’s Basketball Team against the 3G’s Sports Proam. The latter is a Chino Hills, Los Angeles-based team composed of mainly Filipino-American college and semi-pro players. “We’re a 10-year-old traveling team,” adds its coach, Geno Queoche. Comprising the Warriors lineup were Paul Lee (jersey no. 20), Kenneth Acibar (18), Sam Razon (21), Kit Rosopa (19), Garrick Ayala (13), Biboy Enguio (15), Jhon Rey Sumido (8) and Adrian Santos (9), mentored by Head Coach Lawrence Chongson. Lualhati’s squad, still fresh from a memorable “14-0” UAAP season, dominated the fast-paced game all the way. Sweet shots, power rebounds, even the occasional slam dunk typified the Warriors’ game, with our boys leading every quarter: 18-16, 35-30, 44-41 and, finally, running away with a 69-61 win. The top scorers included S. Razon, who notched 14 points, and K. Acibar and B. Enguio, who scored 13 points each; key man Paul Lee racked up six points while during point guard duty. This Warriors contingent had been training in LA a week before joining their UE elders in Las Vegas; five of the boys stayed for a few more days to train at Impact in preparation for UAAP 73. The entire UE population of this game, both on- and off-court, were treated to a buffet of Filipino food.

he time has come for the next gigantic gathering of Lualhati’s alumni from around the world. And this time, the gig will be right where it all began for each of them: the Philippines. But its theme is still intercontinental: UE Go Global! The dates are set: May 25 to 27, 2012—Friday to Sunday. The main venue will be the Marriott Hotel in Pasay City, Metro Manila, with visits to the UE Campuses and various spots across the islands. There will be folksy fun, superb sightseeing, refreshing remembrances and massive memories to be gained by one and all! To wit… On Day 1, in keeping with May as the Philippines’ fiesta month, a native and festive series of activities will be had. A Filipiniana-themed opening salvo will unfold at the Marriott’s Ballroom, replete with décor, entertainment and delicacies that should make all guests feel all the more at home. The afternoon will feature a chockfull of enriching interactive seminars to espouse looking and feeling great—via beauty, health and wellness seminars that will make all participants laugh their aches away, dance their blues away, have such beaming smiles and be more health-conscious all in all. The fiesta mode resumes in the evening with visual and gustatory delights that are unmistakably Filipino. Day 2 will kick off with a succession of nostalgiainducing tours of the UE Campuses, namely UE Manila in C. M. Recto Avenue, the UE Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center Inc. along Aurora Boulevard in Quezon City, and UE Caloocan along Samson Road in Caloocan City. After a restful pause in the afternoon, it will be glitz and glamour time at the Gala Night

back at the Marriott Ballroom, where everyone will be dressed to the nines while dining, dancing, chatting, laughing and having a jolly great time! Don’t forget the suntan lotion on Day 3: It will be grand sightseeing day, with a variety of tourist spots to choose from: the Wack Wack Golf and Country Club in Mandaluyong City, Metro Manila, as well as a city tour of “Mega-Manila,” or trips to the Bicol Region, Bohol, Cebu, Davao, Palawan or Boracay. (Networld Travel and Tours, located at Networld Hotel along Roxas Boulevard’s Pasay City stretch, is the official travel agency.) UE alumnus Cezar T. Quiambao, who headed the Philippine delegation for the UE Alumni Global Reunion’s 2010 debut in Las Vegas, is in charge of the whole affair this time; as such, he is now fondly called “Hermano Mayor.” Señor CTQ’s counterparts for attendees from the USA and Canada are the same as the first time around: Mr. Oscar Jornacion (Overall Chairman for the US-Canada delegation), Mr. Santos Capistrano Jr. (University of the East Association of America President) and Mr. Cirilo Pinlac (UEAA Vice President). This is open to anyone and everyone who has been a part of UE’s 65-year history—whether of UE Manila, UE Caloocan or the UE Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Center Inc. (UERMMMCI), and whether as graduates or former students, incumbent or former administrators, past or present professors or instructors, or employees then or now. That means…YOU!
