From Friday Flights to the Annual PIER PARTY

The Monterey Chapter has had an eventful six months. Our Friday Night tasting included gatherings at Scheid and De Tierra Tasting rooms. Both of these venues are located in Carmel-by-the-Sea along with another dozen or so tasting rooms all located within walking distance of each other. Galante, Windy Oaks and Dawn’s Dream, our other winery members are all within a stone’s throw.

We have emulated the Lodi chapter and organized a Friday Knights’ Flights program that includes a flight of wines coupled with cheese and crackers. Wines are offered at wine club prices and the members bring their purchased bottles to local restaurants for an evening of food and wine extraordinaire.

On September 1st we had the honor of hosting long time member Master Knight Eric Wente at the home of Ernie and Candy Scalberg. The stunning array of Wente wines were personally presented by Eric. A multitude of offerings included Wente’s premiere label Nth Degree. Wente also offers an Artist Series of wines in addition to their flagship Wente label. Close to a dozen wines were offered and the membership was duly impressed with the breadth and quality of the wines.

To complement the wine was the magic of Master Lady, Chef Wendy Brodie. Chef Brodie engaged a number of volunteers to offer a mozzarella bar, a risotto station, bouillabaisse and smoked brisket. The food was exceptional. We were honored with

the presence of Grand Commander Buddy Hagner and Master Lady Trish Hagner. All this was amplified by the 180 degree views of the Carmel Highland’s Pacific Coast made possible by our hosts Ernie and Candy Scalberg.

October is the month of exceptional weather on the California coast. We have enjoyed the sunshine for over thirty years with our Pier Party at Stillwater Cove in Pebble Beach. Over 100 members and guests enjoyed the confluence of the Pebble Beach Golf course with the rugged outline of Point Lobos. All this while perched on a pier over the Pacific calm of Stillwater Cove. Winemakers from De Tierra and Talbott offered their current releases, while member wineries Dawn’s Dream, Galante, Scheid, Wente and Windy Oaks all provided assorted bottles of yumminess. Grilled sausage, pate, shrimp, escargot and cheese were provided by grill masters Scott Scheid and Jack Galante, Chef Didier Dutertre of Bistro Moulin, and Chef Wendy Brodie from the Art of Food. A sit down meal followed with offerings of ribeye steak, salmon, and salads. The jazz of Scotty Wright provided a mellow backdrop for this day of decadence.
