Local boxers spotlight fight night Your hometown newspaper since 1909

By Gregg Sanford Two young professional boxers that train at the 2nd Chance Boxing Gym in Aransas Pass will be in the spotlight at the “War on the Shore” sevenfight card at the Aransas Pass Civic Center Friday, March 30. 22-year-old Enrique “Pretty Boy Assassin” Rodriguez and 20-year-old Ramsey Luna will be fighting in the super featherweight division. Rodriguez will face Henry Hernandez with whom he used to spar with as an amateur. Luna will be fighting for the Texas Super Featherweight title against Julio Valadez. Rodriguez and Luna fought at the Civic Center as amateurs in January 2010. Rodriguez has called Aransas Pass home for several years after moving around the country as a youth. In October of 2005, he was stabbed nine times in the chest, back and side. He spent a week in the hospital with a collapsed lung. It was during his stay at the hospital that Rodriguez decided it was time to change his lifestyle before he ended up another statistic. After being released, Rodriguez started spending more time at church seeking answers to what he describes as his troubled youth. While he never did drugs or drank alcohol, he was “on the ropes” and his life could have swung either way. His father and brother have had their own troubles along the way; in fact both are serving prison terms currently. But Rodriguez remembers them both as positive influences on his life. “They are my motivation,” Rodriguez said.

“They have always told me I could be something. I have seen what has happened to them and I know I don’t want to end up that way.” It was at church where his current boxing

Council invests in harbor boat show

Aransas Pass city council members took over all the operation of the Aransas Pass Aquatic Center on Monday, March 19, ending the Municipal Development District’s involvement with the center. The MDD had been funding part of the aquatic center’s operations after financing its construction, but an amendment to the interlocal agreement between the city and the district would mean “the City of Aransas Pass shall be responsible for and pay, without reimbursement from the district … any and all costs incurred by the Aransas Pass Aquatic Center, be they for renovation, maintenance, operations, repairs or upgrades to the Aquatic Center.” The amendment is effective

retroactive to Oct. 1. Council members also agreed to commit up to $17,500 in hotel-motel tax money to help put on a boat show proposed for Conn Brown Harbor. The show, called “Rock the Dock,” is scheduled for April 20, 21 and 22, and is expected to draw as many as seven area marine dealers, said Mike Moore of Redfish Bay Boat House, which is sponsoring the event. Other vendors totaling 14 have committed to attending the show, Moore said. Moore told the council the boat show could eventually bring in $1 million or more in revenue to the city. “I envision pairing the civic I

junior olympic boxer said. “After hearing his story and many others, something told me we needed to start a boxing club in this town to help kids stay off the streets.“ With help from the church and the city of Aransas Pass, the 2nd Chance Boxing Club was formed. On the first day of training, Gilden knew that his premonitions about Rodriguez were correct. It was not long before people in the boxing world also took notice. Over his four-year tenure as an amateur, Rodriguez had a record of 46 wins and 14 losses, capturing four regional titles and three state titles in Golden Gloves competition. After having controversial losses two years in a row at the National Golden Gloves, Rodriguez decided it was time to pursue the same path as fellow hometown boxer, Ramsey Luna and enter the professional ranks. Since turning professional on July 10, 2010, Rodriguez is 4-0 with three knockouts. Luna, a resident of Corpus Christi has been training with Gilden at the 2nd Chance Gym since 2008. As an amateur from October 2007 until May of 2010 his record was only 12-12, but he did have a win at regionals in Golden Gloves. Luna made his pro debut in May of 2010 on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights. His first professional fight was up as a candidate for fight of the year. He has quickly run his record to 8 wins, two by I

These javelinas were spotted last week in a recently cleared lot on Avenue A about 40 yards from McMullen Lane, across from Aransas Pass High School. Javelinas are indigenous to Texas and have poor eyesight. According to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s website, food sources such as garbage, pet food, some flowering plants, bird seed, and fruit from trees attract javelina. They rarely are known to have “aggressive” encounters with humans but they can be very dangerous to pets. Photo by Gregg Sanford.

Stolen political signs District waives End-of-Course exam policy a concern with police

By John Morgan The Aransas Pass police department has received numerous complaints in regards to political signs being stolen from locations throughout the city and police officials are warning those that are responsible that charges of theft will be pressed if caught. According to Assistant Police Chief Bill Haines, “I believe everybody has the right to choose a side in a issue but it does not give you the right to infringe on others rights. “To deface or steal signs is criminal, and if you are caught you will be charged with a crime.” Haines continued, “In this country we all have the right to participate in a public issue or a

candidate up for re-election and no one has the right to interfere with our constitutional rights. They are protected in our country.” Haines wanted to remind people to be mindful of others rights and if anyone in the community would like to participate in the voting process by displaying signs to do it legally. “Make sure your signs are posted properly inside the community and that you follow the guidelines governing the posting of signs in Texas,” stated Haines. For information in regards to the proper posting of political signs in your community please call the Texas Department of Transportation at 512-4162905.

By Amanda Torres In light of recent recommendations from the Texas Education Agency (TEA), Aransas Pass ISD administrators recommended to the school board Monday night that the district waive a policy that would value end-ofcourse exams taken by current high school freshmen at 15% of their entire grade for the year. The policy was initially enacted during the summer of 2011 under the guidance of the TEA and revised again later in the school year once more information about its implementation was received from the agency. “The night we adopted the [revised] policy, TEA came out with new recommendation saying that for this school year only, the 15% rule could be waived,” APISD assistant superintendent Dr. Cynthia Hernandez explained. End-of-course exams will still be required of high school freshmen for this year. “This year we will not make it count. We’ll have the kids take the test, see how they do and see what we need change in terms of curriculum,” Hernandez said.

APISD school board president Victor Galvan also read a memorandum from the TEA that further explained that more changes concerning the End-of-Course exam policy are possible once the Texas Legislature convenes in its 83rd legislative session. “That’s how it’s been all year long, but we have to make sure our policy falls in line with TEA guidelines,” APISD superintendent Dr. Royce Avery said. Also during the meeting, Avery gave an

information report on the district’s dress code policy. “It was a very positive move. We took a parent and staff survey a couple of weeks before Spring Break, and we had an overwhelming report on changes,” Avery explained. “It’s important that you look at that each year if you want to continue being successful.”

By John Morgan A 21-year-old Aransas Pass man is in a Corpus Christi hospital after being struck by a bullet, while he was sleeping in his home. Capt. Roberto Gonzales stated that at approximately 3 a.m. Monday morning several shots were fired at a residence off the 800 block of South Rife in Aransas Pass. Gonzales said that the victim was struck in the lower back while he slept. They believe the weapon used was a rifle, but the

caliber is not known. The mother of the victim was home at the time of the incident and was not injured. Until the investigation is complete it will not be known what may have prompted the shooting. There are no suspects at this time and investigators encourage anyone who may have any information to call Crime Stoppers at 361-758-TIPS or the Aransas Pass Police Department at 361-758-5224.

Out to Pastor

It’s my body; I’ll exercise it if I have to Lately, I have noticed a lot of news regarding all aspects of the body. According to one report I read, this is a multibillion dollar-a-year business. I never knew my body was worth so much money. I’m tempted to sell it, or at least rent it out on a part-time basis. I did not know how big of a deal this was until one night this past week I had a little trouble sleeping. One reason I have trouble falling asleep is my deep fear of falling. Actually, it’s not the fall that worries me so much as that sudden stop. For some inexplicable reason I always stop three inches past the floor. I would not worry so much about falling asleep if I knew I was going to fall on my pillow instead of the floor. However, I can’t count on anything these days. Not even my fingers. I once woke up in the middle of the night engaged in a vicious life or death pillow fight. Unfortunately, the pillow won and I cannot find anyone to take my case. I did find one lawyer but he was three-sheets-to-the-wind and my case was no breeze. One fear I have in the middle of the night is falling into the hands of some vicious nightmare because of my horsing around the day before. My wife keeps nagging me about my

Habitat for Humanity San Patricio County will be building home #5 on Avenue B in Ingleside. We thank Ingleside City Council for their generosity. Applications for this home are available at the Value Bank in Aransas Pass. All requested material in the application is critical and there is a deadline for mailing them in to Habitat. WOW! Jackie Smithey hit a hole-in-1 Saturday on hole 17 at Live Oak Golf Course, 176 yards. Needless to say Jackie is rather proud. So glad his walking that 18 holes three to four times a week paid off in a royal way. Congratulations Jackie. Happy Birthdays go out to Jerry Wellman last week, Shelby Polasek and Jim McDonald Monday, March 19. Jerry is another avid golfer. With all the gadgets he got for that game at his birthday we may soon have a pro in our midst. ket myself as the “Cooked Goose Gourmet.” All this hype made me hungry, so I raided the refrigerator and kidnapped a tasty snack and immediately put it out of its misery and into my middle-age spread. I say enough is enough. I am tired of other people telling me how to take care of my body. It takes all the strength and energy I have to drag my body from one place to another, let alone adding exercise to my daily schedule. For a person my age I get plenty of exercise, more than I really need. A typical day for me always includes a rigid exercise regime; jumping to conclusions, running my mouth even when I’m told to be quiet from You Know Who and throwing my weight around every chance I get. After a full day of this, I am thoroughly exhausted. For my money, it’s my body and I’ll exercise it if I have to, thank you. However, right now, I have more important things to do. Places to go. People do see. Experiences to enjoy. I can’t think of any right now, but any-

thing is better than some artificial exercise program. Who do you think I am? Jack LaLane? With all this emphasis on exercise, I wish some of these people would exercise the right to keep their viewpoint to themselves. In my opinion, the apostle Paul had the right attitude about all of this. I like what he writes to a young man by the name of Timothy. “For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come” (1 Timothy 4:8 KJV). The body exercised is no substitute for the daily exercise of godliness. To exercise godliness is to make the best possible use of each day. The Rev. James L. Others attending from Aransas Pass were Texas Federation President Dorothy Roberts, Cammie Hyatt, Hanna Coultar, Lonnie Matthew and Sharon Douglas. Cammie Hyatt presented a program on the UT Marine Science Institute of Port Aransas and all it has to offer our area. Our UT Marine Science Institute covers over 145,000 acres of water and over 40,000 acres of land in our area. 2012 San Patricio County Cultural Arts Fair held in January our own Nancy Redmond’s entry received first place honors and will be advanced to state competition. San Patricio EEA Spring Tour is Friday, March 23. Traveling to the High Lonesome Ranch out of Tilden for lunch, village and ranch tour. Members of the AP EEC club will be attending. Exciting times in the family as our granddaughter gets her silk screening business all set up for action. She has been most of a year trying to have the time to dedicate to no avail with a house full of children and full time job. You’re on a roll now Andy, make it work. Congratulations. members Darlene Boehnke and (myself) Irene Irey. Years of all around achievement in the Texas Federation Woman’s Club organization warrant this honor. In Aransas Pass two others, Patti Gilden and Sami Shirley, hold the title. Its wooly worm time. Tassels are beginning to fall from the oaks which means those crawly things will soon be everywhere making their cocoons and eating plants (not to mention how many adults and children are allergic to the fuzz they carry). The Pink Event is April 20 at San Pat County Fairgrounds Civic Center from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. The Friend-toFriend Party is for women to join with their friends to support and encourage each other to get screened for breast and cervical cancers. Early detection is the key to survival. There will be a luncheon, goody bags, door prizes and more. This event is hosted by the San Pat EEA, Texas Ag Extension Service, San Pat County WIC and San Pat County Dept of Public Health.

Interesting how our teachers counted down the days on facebook how much time till Spring Break. Then following parents were counting down till school started again. Now all are back in their environment till we have another school day off for Easter. Relay for Life is selling luminaries to honor or in memory of cancer patients. Cost is $5. Curves will gladly sell to you. These lit bags will be such an awesome site on the walkway at the Relay on April 27. All proceeds are for the American Cancer Society. Conn Brown Harbor is showing more clean-up. The clearing of pilings and falling down buildings continues and is a good site to see. Rockport Rotary is hosting the Taste of Rockport once again on Thursday, March 22. Believe me this is a feast for a $40 donation. If you haven’t gotten your tickets for the Woman’s Club Style Show to be held Saturday, April 14 at the Civic Center it’s time. Local beauties sporting the latest fashions, the CC Dance Team for entertainment, the silent auction, all tie into a New York theme. Patti Gilden and Barbara Kain along, with their committee are working very hard for this to be an unforgettable occasion. Any Woman’s Club member has tickets to sell at $40 each or $375 per reserved table or at the Merle Norman Studio downtown next to the Bakery Café.

surfed for probably 20 minutes and found nothing but people demonstrating exercise equipment and taunting me that I need to begin an exercise regimen if I am going to live a healthy life. One man’s healthy life is another man’s pain in the back, the knees and the elbows. After all this exercise, I only end up with a tennis elbow and athletes foot. Not only exercise equipment, but also a good portion of these infomercials touts on the latest fad diet. According to one commercial I can lose all the weight I want to lose in a six-month period for only six easy payments of $99 which they would gladly charge to my credit card account. “Call right now,” they invite through the television screen, “for this special onetime offer.” This “special one-time offer” is conveniently offered every night. The only weight being lost is from my checking account. If anyone ever had a gander at my checkbook, they would readily see that my goose is cooked. Perhaps I could start a new fad diet: Cooked Goose. I could mar-

daytime activities but I have a hard time harnessing these erratic urges. Often when I have trouble going to sleep or when I wake up in the middle of the night and can’t get back to sleep I simply get up quietly so as not to disturb the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage and turn on the television. I once disturbed her; when I came to, I vowed never to repeat that offense. You would think with so many channels on television there would be something interesting to watch in the middle of the night. Something that would make the time spent profitably. Unfortunately, the nighttime airwaves are devoted to things holding no interest for anybody still clutching to a slim strand of sanity. You do not have to be crazy to watch nighttime TV; it is just a consequence of watching nighttime TV. What I do not understand is why they run so many infomercials for exercise equipment at two o’clock in the morning. Who in their right mind is up that time of night? I know I’m not. Using my remote, I channel

Washington rejects Texas' voter ID bill Ed Sterling Texas Press Association

AUSTIN — Texas’ new law supporters say is meant to prevent voter fraud got a thumbsdown from the U.S. Department of Justice on March 12. If the federal government had allowed the law to take effect in its present form, voters would have been required to present a state-approved identification card in addition to their voter registration card at the polls in order to cast a ballot. In a March 12 news release that came out the day the Justice Department made its decision public, the Brennan Center for Justice in Washington, D.C., stated “Texas’ photo ID law could prevent hundreds of thousands of eligible voters from casting a ballot, including a disproportionate number of minorities.” Although passed by the Texas Legislature as Senate Bill 14 and signed into law in 2011, the law is subject to a higher level of scrutiny by Section 5 of the U.S. Voting Rights Act of 1965. The Lone Star State, because of its history of racial discrimination in elections, under Section 5

must receive preclearance for any changes in voting qualifications, standards, practices or procedures prior to their implementation. Preclearance can be given by the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia or the U.S. Department of Justice headed by U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder. Texas’ chief elections officer, Secretary of State Hope Andrade, expressed disappointment in the Justice Department’s decision but state Attorney General Greg Abbott said the action was “no surprise, given the Obama Administration’s denial of a similar law in South Carolina.” Gov. Rick Perry, in a March 12 statement, said the Justice Department “has no valid reason for rejecting this important law, which requires nothing more extensive than the type of photo identification necessary to receive a library card or board an airplane.” On the other hand, Section 5 is in place to hold certain states and other jurisdictions where inequality has been a problem, to more stringent requirements to uphold the 15th Amendment’s guarantee that no citizen shall be denied the right to vote on account of race or color. Several organizations came forward

in support of the Justice Department’s decision to deny preclearance, including the League of Women Voters, the Mexican American Legislative Caucus, the NAACP and the Texas Democratic Party. State Sen. Royce West, D-Dallas, said, “What the Justice Department said in its ruling was that Texas failed to prove that the changes in law would not have a retrogressive effect on minority voters. In other words, the new law would make it harder for minority citizens to vote than the existing requirements already set in state law.” Secretary of State Andrade, in a March 12 press release said, “My office will continue working with the Texas Attorney General’s Office in seeking to implement the will of the citizens of Texas, as enacted by our duly elected representatives in the Texas Legislature.” On March 14, Abbott filed a motion to revise the state’s pending complaint seeking preclearance. The revised motion challenges the constitutionality of Section 5 itself. After filing the motion Abbott explained, “As recently as two months ago, (U.S. Supreme Court) Justice (Anthony) Kennedy stated from the bench that Section 5 places Texas at a disadvantage com-

pared to other states. The Department of Justice is using Section 5 to deny Texas the right to enforce a law that is allowed under the U.S. Constitution. Section 5 cannot trump the Constitution.” Combs touts transparency rating Texas has received the top ranking for government spending transparency in an annual report on all states issued by the consumer watchdog U.S. Public

Interest Research Group, Texas Comptroller Susan Combs announced March 14. Combs’ office’s texastransparency.org <http://texastransparency.org> website provides a way for citizens to keep tabs on state and local governmental finances and spending. Apple to beef up operations here Gov. Rick Perry on March 9 announced Cupertino, Calif.based Apple Inc. “will expand its

presence in Texas with a $304 million investment in a new campus in Austin that will create more than 3,600 new jobs.” In exchange for Apple’s commitment to create these new jobs in Texas, the state has offered Apple an investment of $21 million over 10 years through the Texas Enterprise Fund managed by the governor’s office.

Speaker appoints joint interim committees (human trafficking) Todd Hunter

State Representative

During the 81st Texas Legislature, I Chaired the Judiciary and Civil Jurisprudence Committee. It is while serving as Chairman of that committee that I learned how serious a problem human trafficking is in the State of Texas. It is for this reason that during the 82nd Texas Regular Legislative Session, I filed and the legislature passed House Concurrent Resolution (HCR) 68, which was signed on June 17, 2011, by Governor Rick Perry. HCR 68 officially requested that the Lieutenant Governor and the Speaker of the House create a joint interim study committee. At the beginning of 2012, Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst and Texas House Speaker Joe Straus appointed the members of the Joint Committee on Human Trafficking. The committee is comprised of seven Texas House members

It seems that some of the proponents of the $28 million school bond issue are not confident. That is the only reason I see for the theft and vandalism of signs of the opponents of the bond issue. It is really sad to know that people will stoop to stealing and destroying signs that disagree with their opinion. I do not think the core group of proponents of the bond issue would condone this criminal behavior. I do hope they will use their influence on these thieves and vandals to get them to stop. I oppose the bond issue, not because I oppose offering our children the best possible education, but the items on the list as done are not things that will improve the curriculum. A tax increase will hurt everyone and cause families to not be

and seven Texas Senate members. The committee is tasked with analyzing ways to combat the human trafficking trade within the State of Texas, as well as identifying services that may be available to victims of human trafficking and the best practices that can be utilized by public-private partnerships. It is extremely important that the State of Texas take a lead role in combating human trafficking due to the state's large geographical size and busy ports. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, human trafficking is defined as the recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, or obtaining of a person for one of three purposes: • Labor or services, through the use of force, fraud or coercion for the purposes of subjection to involuntary servitude, peonage, debt bondage, or slavery. •A commercial sex act through the use of force, fraud, or coercion. •Any commercial sex act, if the person is under 18 years of age, regardless of whether any

form of coercion is involved. Between 2008-2010, data was collected through the Human Trafficking Reporting System. During that time period Federally funded task forces opened more than 2500 cases of suspected human trafficking. Out of those 2500 cases approximately 82% were classified as sex trafficking, with about 1,000 of those incidents involving allegations of prostitution or sexual exploitation of a child. The remaining cases were connected to trafficking for labor purposes and other unknown reasons. It is important to know that human trafficking is not exclusive to one segment of society. Human trafficking involves victims of all races, age groups, both males and females and United States Citizens, as well as non-citizens. Individuals seeking to force people in to human trafficking do not discriminate amongst their victims and often prey upon those who are most vulnerable. At the end of March, I am

able to offer their children enrichment opportunities offered in our community. The school district does not support the fine arts or the performing arts, which is a shame. I do not see anything on the long list of district improvements that comes close to establishing any kind of fine arts enrichment for our students. Even the stage in the proposed gym, does not meet UIL competition requirements. If this bond issue passes you will be paying higher cost for food, clothes, rent and property taxes. Landlords and business owners will not absorb the increased taxes; they will pass them on to tenants and customers. Can you afford the added tax burden for the next 30 years? Before you fall for the “Vote for Bond” go on the school web

site. The list of things does not pertain to a better education. This bond issue is too long and poorly timed. Ann P. Melton Aransas Pass

Police News Explorer helps net drug arrest Rockport police seek help in

By John Morgan A local woman was arrested last Wednesday after a police explorer witnessed seeing her and another female purportedly being involved in a drug deal off the 100 block of Misty Lane in Aransas Pass. Police explorers are 14 to 21 year olds that receive handson police training in preparation for a future career in law enforcement. According to Capt. Roberto Gonzales, 46-year-old Christine L. cers walking from a residence, with another female, towards a red Ford that was parked in the roadway. As officers arrived and checked the women for warrants Mayo “pulled out something from her right front pocket and dropped it on the sidewalk,” according to Gonzales. Mayo was charged with possession of a controlled substance, a felony, and was transported to the San Patricio County Jail.

Copper thieves arrested after chase

By John Morgan Two men who were caught attempting to steal copper wiring from an electrical power line pole were arrested last week, but only after officers had to pursue the two as they fled on foot. Aransas Pass Capt. Roberto Gonzales explained that at approximately 1 a.m. last Wednesday officers were dispatched to a residence off the corner of Whitney and West Maddox Street for a burglary in progress.

As officers arrived, two men who were later identified as Aransas Pass residents Ralph Galvan and Raul Davila ran from the scene and were witnessed throwing items into a bush as they made their way past the intersection of Lamont and Whitney. Officers quickly detained the two suspects and, after a brief search of the area, located a pair of wire cutters and a hacksaw. Gonzales explained that a resident who lived nearby heard

the two suspects “sawing on something,” which investigators determined to be a power line behind a residence in the area. As officers checked the area where the power line was located they discovered a blue backpack, a camouflage jacket, a flashlight and a shopping cart. Both Galvan and Davila were charged with unlawful use of a criminal instrument, evading on foot and attempted theft of copper, and were transported to the San Patricio County Jail.

Goliad fugitive apprehended in AP By John Morgan A wanted fugitive was arrested Thursday night after the Aransas Pass police department responded to a call about a man causing a disturbance at a bar located at the 200 block of East Wheeler. According to Capt. Roberto Gonzales, when officers arrived on scene they could not locate the suspect and proceeded to search the area for a person that fit his description. During the search Aransas Pass dispatchers notified officers that the suspect was reported to have been seen at a local motel off the 100 block of Commercial and that he

“pushed a female and was causing problems in the office,” according to Gonzales. As officers responded they witnessed a man fitting the description of their suspect and attempted to make contact with him, only to have him flee which forced officers to physically detain him, explained Gonzales. The suspect was transported to the Aransas Pass city jail and identified as 54-year-old Paul Gonzalez, who was discovered to have an active warrant out of Goliad County for engaging in organized crime. Gonzalez was charged with evading arrest with a previous conviction, resisting arrest and

“A painter paints pictures on canvas. But musicians paint their pictures on silence,” Leopold Stokowski said. Stokowski conducted orchestras for sixty years and most people know him as the conductor who led the music for Disney’s “Fantasia” animated feature. He lived until the ripe old age of ninety-five in 1977. Imagine all the music he brought to folks to enjoy over the years! He led and formed many orchestras but is best known for the “Philadelphia Sound” due to his innovative approach. He completely changed the traditional seating of the Philadelphia Orchestra; experimenting with violins on one side, cellos on the other, bass strings in the back, etc. I’m sure he was quite the scandal to the traditionalists; if

After taking a 3-1 lead into the fifth inning, Aransas Pass saw Goliad score twice in the fifth to tie the game and then allowed four unearned runs in the sixth to drop its opener 7-3. error and Trini Barrera singled. Goliad tied the game in the second after a base on balls, a bunt single and an error by pitcher Journey Cole. Cole then struck out the next three batters to end the threat. In the third, Oliver reached on another error and Muñoz and Cole followed with singles. Oliver was cut down trying to score, but Muñoz scored to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead. Dana Thompson led off the fourth with a single and after reaching third base, scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by Kayla Sullinger. A double, walk and a single produced two runs in the Tiger half of the fifth to tie the score 33 before a walk, single, double and two errors plated four more runs in the sixth for Goliad. Oliver and Muñoz reached base with singles in the Panther seventh, but Oliver was again tagged out on the base path and Muñoz was forced out on a fielder’s choice by Cole who was in turn forced out on a ground ball to short by Barrera to end the Panther’s comeback bid. The Panthers racked up eight hits in the loss but committed four errors while Cole struck out 9 and walked 5. Ingleside visited the Panthers on Thursday and Aransas Pass got their first district win against the defending district champion Mustangs 4-1. Ingleside scored its lone run in the top of the first inning after Taylor Snyder walked and Breanna Esquivel doubled to bring Snyder home. Mustang batters were only able to touch Panther pitcher Journey Cole for four hits while striking out 12 times, 9 of those coming in the first three innings. The Panthers tied the game at one in the third inning when Oliver reached on an error by shortstop Michelle Jolly after two outs. Tora Hart and Muñoz followed with singles to plate Oliver. In the Panther fourth, Cole walked, Barrera singled and Mariana Cantu was hit by a pitch to open the inning. All three players would score. Thompson followed with a walk, Clarissa Flores reached on an error and Oliver singled to give the momentum to Aransas Pass. Aransas Pass touched Ingleside pitching for five hits and struck out six times. Panther Head Coach Chris Spalek said afterward, “The district race is going to be close. Goliad is a solid team and Ingleside can hit. Most of the teams are going to be solid but I like our chances.” The Lady Panthers were slated to play Mathis last night while Ingleside travelled to Goliad. The Lady Panthers are now 68 on the season, 1-1 in district play. The Mustangs are 6-6, 0-2 in district. Box score: Aransas Pass Goliad Box score: Ingleside Aransas Pass

Inexpensive ways to decorate easter eggs OK, so the kids noticed on the calendar that Easter is approaching and they want to make a huge production of dying eggs. In the past, the little stickers you bought at the store sufficed, but now they want the real thing. Here are some old standards with a few new ideas for you from www.LivingOnADime.com. Before you decorate Easter eggs, cover the entire table with newspaper. Keep a huge roll of paper towels or rags handy for messes. Have each kid wear one of dad’s old (now disposable) tee shirts. To make egg stands, cut toilet paper roll cores into one-inch cylinders and use for egg stands. Decorate with stickers or paint.

Decorating eggs: The traditional method. Hard boil eggs. Fill several mugs with boiling water and add 1-2 tsp. vinegar. Place a few drops of desired food coloring in each mug. Place eggs in mugs for several minutes until the eggs reach the desired shades. Remove with a spoon. Place on a paper towel to dry. When dry, polish with a small amount of shortening on a paper towel. Buff until glossy. You can draw or write on the eggs with a light colored or white crayon before dipping. The drawing will remain white after the egg is dipped. To clean out the mugs, put a little bleach water in the cups and soak for a few minutes.
