The filly classes that start off the show are always the biggest, especially the yearlings, which are still divided into three sections (in the past, there have even been up to five), and also the strongest. It was the winner of the huge junior section who emerged as the overall yearling filly winner, Cullinghurst Stud’s homebred Wirajjaa, by World Champion Marajj out of the black Polish mare Wipera. This is a superb filly that reflects the best of Polish breeding, with excellent conformation including (something not often seen these days) really well-shaped knees and hocks. Unknown to everyone, this was to be the beginning of an unprecedented streak of success for Cullinghurst at this show, which we will get back to shortly. They also had a hand in the reserve best yearling filly, as they own her sire, Psadisho Ibn Esstashan, former German National Champion bred by Reinhard Sax. The filly is Shams Al Thahabiyya, and she is bred and owned by the Mattocks family, not only genuine small breeders, but also basically Crabbet breeders, and she is actually out of a Crabbet dam — the first, but by no means the last Crabbet-related success at this show. She was the winner of the intermediate section, and the second-placed filly of that section placed third in the final lineup: ROE Layaal, an elegant liver chestnut daughter of Marwan Al Shaqab out of ROE Lahab by the Fame VF son Essteem, so largely of American breeding, who looked as if she owned the ring as she trotted in. The winner of the senior section also deserves mention, even if she didn’t get among the final three; this was Makisa Rosabella, by the U.S.-bred Versace son Vervaldee, who also sired the second-placed filly in the senior section. I have never seen this horse himself, but he is certainly emerging as a successful sire and is putting very pretty heads on his get. The two-year-old fillies came in two sections, and the overall winner was again the junior winner, and again bred and owned by Cullinghurst Stud: Crystal Fadishaa, another daughter of Psadisho Ibn Esstashan who is really doing well with his first two foal crops. On her dam’s side, Fadishaa traces back to the Cullinghurst foundation mare Sheer Magic, who was British National Champion Mare back in 1974. The stud was established in the early 1970s by Nadia Howard-Price, who still runs it today, together
