The reserve championship went to the senior mare winner, Red House Zinderella, who has done very well under saddle. She has a more unusual pedigree and is not entirely Crabbet/OE, carrying 12.5 percent Egyptian/Marbach blood through her great-grandsire Melchior. The gelding winner was the tall bright chestnut Zinjari, another veteran of, ridden competition, who beat the smaller and typier Astrologer; at 16.1 hh Zinjadi is big, but a beautiful horse nonetheless.

There was also a mixed youngstock class made up of colts and fillies between one and three years of age; while not large, it was a real quality class. The winner was the tall chestnut yearling colt Dhay, who is by the rare Courthouse stallion Spearmint out of Daleela, a full sister to Daas, winning over the tiny black chestnut yearling Autumn Dew, an Imad daughter. Imad was very much present as a sire at this show, and, what is even better, at the regular British Nationals as well. His daughter Sunlights Imadge won the National Futurity for three-year-old fillies, and, the crowning glory, his daughter Maiad was not only purebred, ridden champion, but overall, ridden champion of the show as well. A fitting tribute to the late, great Imad, and a reminder that contrary to what some might think, Crabbet Arabians are still very much present. Hopefully they will also be back at Malvern next year with their own championship classes. While watching these classes was a bit like traveling back in time, they are more than just an exercise in nostalgia. It should rather be a pointer “back to the future,” as there are a lot of things in modern halter showing that would benefit from a little old-style makeover. As usual, the ideal is probably somewhere in the middle; meanwhile, it is good to show that Arabians can be shown differently. The horses certainly benefit from the change of pace, and that should really be what counts. 12 b ARABIAN HORSE WORLD b SEPTEMBER 2009
